Remark: The use of a calculator with no programs is allowed.
First exercise.
A- Theoretical study
I- A horizontal mechanical oscillator is formed of a solid (S) of masse M = 0.760 kg fixed to a
spring (R) of force constant K = 8.3 N/m and of negligible mass.
(S) can slide without friction on a horizontal axis x'x. When
(S) is in equilibrium, its center of inertia G is situated at the
point O considered as the origin of abscissa. (S) is shifted by
X0 = 3.7 cm in the positive direction, and then released from rest at the instant to = 0. .
At the instant t, G being at a point of abscissa x has the velocity iVV
, (V = xdt
dx ).
The horizontal plane containing x'x is chosen as the reference level for the gravitational potential
energy.
1. Give, at the instant t, the expression of the mechanical energy of this oscillator in terms of x
and x , and deduce the differential equation that describes the motion of G.
2. Determine the values of the characteristic quantities 0 and T0 of this oscillator.
3. Determine the time equation of the motion of G.
II- (S) is attached to two springs identical to (R) each of natural
length 0. The length of the spring at equilibrium is ( > 0). We consider the same preceding
conditions (x0 = 3.7 cm and V0 = 0)
The two springs are always stretched and (S) oscillates
without friction along AB.
1. Calculate, in terms of 0, and x the elongation of each
spring at any instant t and give the expression of the elastic
potential energy of each spring.
2. a) Write the mechanical energy of this new oscillator at any instant t, and then deduce the
differential equation that describes the motion of G.
b) Deduce that the value of the proper pied '
0T of this oscillator is '
0T = To/ 2 .

B- Experimental study:
I- Free oscillations.
We consider the oscillator where (S) is attached to the two springs identical to (R).
An appropriate apparatus allows to record the motion of the center of inertia G of (S) as a
function of time. The recording of the different positions of G gives the adjacent curve.
1. Does the mechanical energy of this oscillator remain conserved
during oscillations? Justify.
2. Measure, using this curve, a characteristic quantity of this
oscillator and compare it to that calculated in the theoretical
study.
II- Forced oscillations.
The oscillator is in its equilibrium position.
The end A is no more fixed; it is connected to an exciter of adjustable frequency.
A is then performing a sinusoidal motion of frequency f. The oscillator [(S), springs, support] is
the resonator which performs oscillations of amplitude Xm depending on f. Give the shape of the
curve representing the variations of Xm as a function of f specifying the value of the frequency at
amplitude resonance.
Second exercise.
A circuit is formed of the components placed in series, a switch(K),
a resistor (R) of resistance R and a capacitor (C) of capacitance C .
This circuit is fed by a low frequency generator delivering across its
terminals a square wave.
u. = U for 0 t T/2;
u = 0 for T/2 t T.
(K) is closed at the instant t0 = 0
1. a) Derive the differential equation that describes the evolution of uC as a function of time t for
0 t T/2.
b) Give the expression of the time constant of this circuit.
c) Give the shape of the curve uC as a function of time supposing that T/2 » and specify the
value of uC at the instant T/2.
2. a) What will happen starting from the instant T/2?
b) Write, then, the differential equation that describes the evolution of uC as a function of time
t for T/2 t T.
c) Give the shape of the curve showing the evolution of uC and that of uR as a function of time
t for T/2 t T.

Binding energy per nucleon for: U235
92 : EA(U) = 7.7 MeV
Binding energy per nucleon for Xe139
54 : EA(Xe) = 8.4 MeV
Binding energy per nucleon for Sr95
38 : EA(Sr) = 8.7 MeV.
A. 1. Give the expression of the mass of a nucleus in terms of c, the mass mn of a neutron, the
mass mp of a proton and the binding energy EB of this nucleus.

3. Verify that this reaction is exoenergetic.
B. Knowing that the natural nuclides Xe132
54 and Sr88
38 are stable, the products of the fission are
radioactive; they are - emitter.
1. These products transform into other radioactive elements. The whole set of these products
constitutes radioactive waste. Among these waste, we find strontium 90Sr of period (half-life)
25 years and the cesium 137Cs of period 100/3 years.
a) Define the radioactive period of a radio-nuclide.
b) If N0 is the number of 90Sr nuclei at the instant t0 = 0 and N that of the remaining 90Sr nuclei
at the instant t1 = 100 years, determine the ratio N'/N0 where N' is the number of the
disintegrated 90Sr nuclei during these 100 years.

Answer the following two questions
I. Titration of ascorbic acid in a vitamin C tablet
The aim of this study is to determine, by titration, the mass of ascorbic acid, C6H8O6 (which
reacts as a monoacid) in a tablet of vitamin C.
We dissolve one tablet of vitamin C in 100 mL of distilled water. The obtained solution is
tittered by a sodium hydroxide solution having concentration of 0.32 mol.L-1.
The results of the pH measurements are given in the following table, where Vb is the volume of
sodium hydroxide solution.
Vb (mL) 0 1 3 4 5 6 7 8
pH 3,0 3,3 3,8 4,0 4,2 4,4 4,7 5,1
Vb (mL) 8,5 9 9,5 10 11 13 15
pH 5,6 9,6 10,2 10,5 10,8 11,0 11,2
1-Plot on the provided graph paper the curve that represents the variation of pH as function of
Vb , pH = f(Vb). Take the following scale: 1 cm for 1 mL on the abscissa and 1cm for
each pH unit on the ordinate.
2- From the graph, determine the coordinates of equivalence point.
3- Write the equation of the reaction between ascorbic acid and sodium hydroxide.

4- Determine the mass (in milligram) of ascorbic acid contained in one tablet of vitamin C. Is
this result compatible with the indication (500) of the manufacturer « vitamin C 500 »?
Given: M (ascorbic acid) = 176 g.mol-1 (18 points)
II- The complete combustion of 2,9 g of an organic compound (A), of formula CxHyO, gives
2,7g of water and 6,6 g of carbon dioxide.
1- Show that the molecular formula of (A) is C3H6O.
2- Compound (A) gives a white-crystallized solid with sodium bisulfite and a yellow
precipitate with DNPH. Identify the functional group of (A) and write the condensed
structural formulas of possible isomers of (A).
3- Compound (A) gives by heating, with Fehling solution, a red precipitate. Identify (A).
4- The catalytic hydrogenation of (A) gives a compound (B), whether, the mild oxidation of
(A) gives a compound (C). Identify (B) and (C) and write the two equations of the
reactions that lead (B) and (C) from (A).
5- We carry out a mixture of 20mL of (B) and 18.5 g of (C) added to 5mL of concentrated
sulfuric acid. This mixture is kept at 60 ºC temperature during a few days. The
experiment shows that the equilibrium is reached when 2/3 of a limiting reactant react.

graph, the coordinates of point (E) are: abscissa Vb = 8,8 mL and ordinate PH = 7,6
3- The chemical equation: NaOH is a strong base. The pH of the solution, at equivalence, is
slightly basic; ascorbic acid C6H8O6 is a weak acid.
The chemical reaction is complete and it is given by:
C6H8O6 + HO -

In the organization of industrial life the influence of the factory 1 the
physiological and mental state of the workers has been neglected. Modern industry is based 2
the conception of maximum production at lowest cost, in order that the owner may earn 3 much
money as possible. It has expanded without any idea of the true nature of the human beings 4

for us. The shape and dimensions of the skyscrapers depend entirely 6 the necessity of
obtaining the maximum income per square foot of ground, and of offering the tenants offices and
apartments that please them. This caused the construction of gigantic buildings where large
masses of humans are crowded together. While people enjoy the comfort and luxury of their
dwelling, they don’t realize that they are deprived of the necessities of life. Our cities consist 7
huge edifices and of dark, narrow streets full 8 fumes, dust, and toxic gasses, torn by the noise
of cars, lorries and busses, and thronged by large crowds. Obviously, it has not been planned for
