KICK-OFF MEETING

• User requirements report (1 March 09)

• Pedagogical framework report (1 April 09)

• LA@CERN Initial Missions (1 April 09)

• LA@CERN Final Missions (1 Sept 09)

WP2 finishes after one year

What has to be done -(when!)

Who has to do it?

• All of us … BUT

• University of Birmingham - leads WP2

• Special support from

• Heureka for ‘Science centres’

• EA and BMUKK for ‘Schools’

Where will we do it ?

• Schools in Greece and Austria (2 schools)

• Universities in Greece, Sweden, UK

• Science centres in Finland, Sweden

BUT with ‘extended validation exercises it is

expected to be presented in many countries’

How do we get started ?• Small workshops with existing scenarios

(involve small group of teachers)

Allow short time for initial tests

• User requirements workshops

Key input to our pedagogical frameworks and initial missions

Challenges – personal view

• Time to do the work – for us and teachers

• Defining specific user groups in our different countries

• Selection of initial scenarios/missions

Defining user groups• Schools clearest but …• What age? • Variation of topic in syllabus in countries• Variation in school time available, in class or outside?

• Universities• Target less clear to me.• New material for University courses or extra for students

to try on their own?

• Science Centres• Individual visitors. Would there be workshops ?

ATLAS Student Event Challenge

• Why do these experiments – big questions• What do we know now• How do the experiments work – LHC,

Particle detectors, Grid Computing• Interpreting the collisions – visualisation

Many interesting things to learn about

• Exercise needs to be varied and fun!

• Identifying events visually can be repetitive

• Web pages need lively style

• Topic is fascinating - but looking for new physics with event display is very tough!!

When students study collisions

My conclusions• Looking forward to this meeting. The

collaboration has lots of experience

• Make use of all our contacts eg CERN high school teachers programme

• Help from all of you will be needed in the first very short phase of WP2!

• Thanks to Sofoklis for his help with this session
