Instructions for taking Cornell Notes
• Starting on pg 3, use a ruler to put a Cornell Line on the next 2 Note pages (odd pages) in your INB– Put the line 1/3 of the way in from the book fold
• Write Blue colored words to the left of the line
• Write Black colored words to the right of the line
• You do not need to write Red or Orange colored words
• Underline words that are underlined for emphasis
Metric Notes – An introduction to Scientific Measurement
• What are the 5 Areas of Scientific Measurement and what do they measure?
• Amount of matter in an object • Weight is a function of gravity (Mass isn’t)• Would your weight change if you were on the moon?• Would your mass change if you were on the moon?
• SI unit - Gram • kg > hg > Dg > g > dg > cg > mg• gram has approx. mass to 1 paper clip
• Equipment - • Triple Beam Balance or digital scale
Weight -
• Amount of heaviness of something• Changes with gravity
• SI Unit – Newton• Equipment - same as Mass
Density -• measurement of how tightly matter is crammed together (mass per
unit volume)
• SI Unit - cgs unit of grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm 3 ). • One of most common uses of density is in how different materials interact when mixed
together• Wood floats in water because it has a lower density than H2O• Anchor sinks because the metal has a higher density than H2O• Helium balloons float because the density of the helium is lower than the density of the
air
• Remember, grams is a mass and cubic centimeters is a volume (the same volume as 1 milliliter).
