Dear Parents/Carers and Students, Our curriculum offer has been further refined this year. This reinforces last year’s developments and is in line with the Government’s new proposals to condense Key Stage 3 to two years, and extend Key Stage 4 to three years, for all schools and academies nationally. Students are again given the opportunity, where appropriate, to commence GCSE studies in Year 9, although there is also the opportunity to study non-accredited GCSE Access courses for progression to full GCSE the following year. Some GCSEs/BTECs will be delivered in five hours per week and completed in one academic year. This brings added flexibility and choice, plus the opportunity to benefit from additional English and Maths support if required. This also means that our vision for ‘Stage not Age’ education and accreditation can become a reality, with students able to study accredited courses when they are ready. It is important that you take time to read our Learning Pathways offer carefully and view the Learning Pathways information film, which is available on the website. The film illustrates the relevant content and assessment details for each course. It is also extremely important to think through future progression routes to further education, training or employment, before making choices and returning your forms.

This year’s Learning Pathways offer provides a variety of routes by which students can gain qualifications. Below you will find some general guidance; more detailed information regarding courses is available in the individual course entries: MEASURING STUDENT PERFORMANCE (GENERAL INFORMATION) Student achievement is measured through their ability to gain combinations of Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications:

Most students are expected to achieve at level 2 qualifications including both English and Maths by the time they leave secondary school. The second key performance measure is a student’s eight best Level 2 qualifications. Student performance is also measured in the EBACC suite of qualifications (please see EBACC paragraph below for further details). GCSEs are the most common form of LEVEL 2 qualification and are assessed through a combination of examination and controlled assessment. Level 2 success at GCSE is measured by grade, ranging from A*-C. BTECs are also popular Level 2 qualifications and have equivalence with GCSE. BTECs take a more practical approach: there is greater focus on evidence gathering through portfolio work and less emphasis is placed on external (examination assessment). BTEC results are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. It is the recommendation that most students choose a maximum of two BTEC or non-GCSE courses over three years, within the Pathways. Some qualifications are available at Level 1 ((please see individual course entries for details). This is broadly equivalent to Grade E at GCSE. ACCESS COURSES Access courses can be used in a variety of ways and are an ideal starting point within a subject area. Access courses are strongly recommended for Year 9 students; perhaps in combination with one accredited course. Access courses are designed as a route into GCSE and other Level 2 qualifications. Some Access courses lead to specific qualifications (please see individual course entries for details). Most Access courses are single discipline. However, some do combine subjects to offer variety, that can then lead to specialisation at a later point (please see individual course entries for details). It is important that students wishing to take Business Studies at GCSE take Access Business and Technology first.

RETAKING A COURSE One of the benefits of our three year Key Stage Four is that students have more choice. This also provides the flexibility to retake a course where necessary. Students may consider retaking a course when: They studied a subject which is important to their future career and education plans in

Year 9. Their achievement in a subject area falls significantly below their target grade. They achieved below grade C in a subject. THE EBACC PATHWAY The EBACC (English Baccalaureate) is a package of subjects that are used as a performance measure. It is not a qualification in itself. The EBACC subjects are English, Maths, Science, MFL and History or Geography. Achieving the EBACC signifies academic breadth, in a range of traditional subjects. We, therefore, strongly recommend students consider the Pathway. The EBACC Pathway has been designed to ensure that students achieve in the two areas of the EBACC which are not compulsory (core provision) for all students. The Pathway has been designed to operate over a two, or even three year cycle (examination entry will depend on progress). EBACC Pathway 1 is the first phase and should be selected by present Year 8 students. The Pathway will comprise three hours of Modern Foreign Language study and two hours of Humanities (choice between History and Geography). EBACC Pathway 2 is for Year 10 students who have studied German this year. The Pathway will build on the German skills acquired this year and begin the introductory phase of Humanities study. FOUNDATION LEARNING A number of courses have been specifically designed for Foundation Learners and, as a result, operate at Level 1. Students are selected for these courses; however, if you do have an interest, please speak to Mrs Hughes, Director of Inclusion, or Mrs Robinson, Director of Student Engagement and Achievement.

APPRENTICESHIP PATHWAY EAL Engineering Level 1 WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? You must be on course to achieve at least five other qualifications You must be in Year 11 You must want to pursue a skilled apprenticeship with BAEsystems, or similar engineering

based industry. Have a desire to move onto the EAL Level 2 Engineering course at college You must have an interest in working with your hands and be prepared to spend time in a

workshop learning practical skills along with paper based activities to develop your portfolio and knowledge of working in Engineering

WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? This course offers you the opportunity to gain an understanding of the world of Engineering in industry. You will be given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the skills you need to be successful in pursuing a career in engineering. This course has been designed in liaison with our sponsor Furness College and BAE Systems. Successful completion of this course will guarantee students a placement at Furness College on the EAL Level 2 Engineering course. This is an identified selection area for BAE Apprenticeships. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? The course is both workshop and computer based (CAD/CAM) Students will need to study 5 Units, Unit 1—Working in Engineering is compulsory . The other

4 Units will be selected by the course Assessor Each Unit has a controlled assessment element to it—which is completed in the classroom or

workshop under examination conditions Students can gain a Pass/Merit/Distinction for individual Units, students will gain an overall

Pass of Fail for the course based on achievement of the 5 Units Each Unit is Assessed and Internally Verified before External verification Students will produce a professional portfolio, designed to be taken to college/interview, to

show potential colleges/employers the skills they have learned

ACCESS ART (non-accredited) WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? An interest in art Willingness to work in new and exciting ways WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? The focus of this course is about learning new skills and techniques, art for fun and enjoyment plus developing working in an independent and personally directed manner. You will explore working with different materials in both two and three dimensional forms, having the opportunity to experiment with mediums such as paint, clay, print, computer generated art, photography etc. You will be able to research and investigate artists and art forms of your choice along with creating art work to your own personalised design briefs. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? The course is 100% course work. You will create a body of work which will be presented as a portfolio and final outcome pieces. The work completed on this course may be used towards entry for GCSE or BTEC if opted for at a later stage.

BTEC ART & DESIGN (Edexcel) WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? Enthusiastic about learning new techniques and working with different materials Interested in commercial art WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? The course is divided into compulsory and specialist units including: 2D and 3D visual communication, contextual references in Art & Design, explore and develop Art & Design ideas, produce an Art & Design outcome, photography, fashion, textiles and the media. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? The course will be assessed through a mixture of portfolio work and controlled assessment.

FINE ART GCSE (AQA) WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? Ability to work in a variety of media Willingness to maintain a folder and sketchbook containing evidence of personal research,

observations, ideas, analysis and final outcome WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? You will work to your personal strengths and ideas in the following areas Developing and exploring ideas through investigation using a variety of media Analysing and evaluating images and artefacts Recording observations, experiences and ideas Reviewing, modifying and refining your work as it progresses Presenting a personal informed outcome, realising intentions and making informed

connections with the work of others HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? You are required to present a selected portfolio of coursework plus a ten hour controlled test. The Coursework assessment carries 60% marks and the controlled test 40% marks.

ACCESS BUSINESS & COMPUTING (non-accredited)

WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? An interest in business enterprise The desire to take Computer Science or Business Studies at GCSE Inquisitive – want to know more about Computer Science The ability to work with others as part of a team Motivated and enthusiastic learner Interest in how businesses work and what makes them successful WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? This course will help develop business knowledge and show you how to spot a successful business opportunity. You will learn why customer needs are central to starting a business, what the different types of market research are and how the data can be collected and understood. Throughout the course you will be expected to work in groups collaborating with others, and often presenting your findings in the style of Dragon’s Den. You will be given the opportunity to take part in an Enterprise Project, where you will be able to put into practice the skills you are learning, with further information from local entrepreneurs who will be invited into school to share their experiences and ideas with you. Computer Science will be introduced and key concepts involved in software and applications design will be addressed. Simple programming language developed in lessons to enable you to create a simple program using a variety of techniques. You will mix these new skills with your business knowledge to create a promotional package to market your final programs. This course will encourage you to develop your business and computer technology knowledge, work with others to build your confidence and enable you to present your ideas in a creative and inventive way. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? The course will be divided up into projects. There is no final examination but the course is excellent preparation for both GCSE Business Studies and GCSE Computer Science, helping you to develop vital skills for success.

BUSINESS STUDIES GCSE (Edexcel)

We advise students to take Access Business and computing in Year 9 before taking GCSE Business Studies. WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? Enthusiastic and motivated with good communication skills Good organisational skills, mature attitude, flexible thinking The ability to work as part of a team WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? While studying this course you are likely to learn a lot of new things. You will be introduced to the world of small businesses and will look at what makes someone a successful business person. You will find out how to develop an idea and spot an opportunity, and turn that into a successful business. You will discover how businesses promote themselves and keep their customers happy. You will also learn how businesses manage both their finances and the people who work for them. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? Unit 1: Introduction to Small Businesses - Examination worth 25% Unit 2: Controlled Assessment worth 25% Unit 3: Building a business - Examination worth 50%

ACCESS CATERING BTEC Level 1/2 Jamie’s Home Cooking skills

This course is hugely engaging for learners of all cooking abilities. For some, it may be the start of

a career in catering; for others, it will help them to learn the basic skills and recipes that will stand

them in good stead throughout their lives.

WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? Enthusiastic about food and food related issues Able to access ingredients for practical work on a regular basis WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? To study home cooking skills is to learn how to cook great food that tastes amazing, how to save money and, in the long run, how to lead a happier, healthier life. The course develops the student's ability to plan and prepare a series of nutritious home-cooked meals for breakfast, snacks, lunch and dinner, and helps them understand how to cook economically. This is a practical based course developing confidence, practical cooking skills and competency using a variety of ingredients, equipment and following Health, Safety and Hygiene standards. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? The course consists of over 80 recipes, all divided into manageable sections and covering key topics from eggs and baking to vegetables and quick-cook meats. This is all supported by a range of fact sheets dealing with other basics and essentials such as: kitchen basics: what equipment you need and the best way to stock your store cupboard,

fridge and freezer food safety and hygiene: knife safety, fridge management and rotation how to shop cleverly: shopping lists, seasonal food, planning ahead preparing ingredients and how to understand confusing food labels The course is split into three hour and two hour sessions. Practical work will take place during the three hour session. The two hour session will be given to discussion work, demonstrations, planning, reviewing developed skills and recipe building. There is no formal examination with this course but internal assessments will take place through practical work, discussion and a final portfolio of evidence. A sample of internally assessed work will be submitted to the examination board for verification of marks.

CATERING GCSE (WJEC) WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? Enthusiastic about food and food related issues Able to access ingredients for practical work on a regular basis WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? You will study four areas of work: food and nutrition, meal planning and food production, technological development and the catering industry. You will complete practical tasks on a regular basis relevant to each of the areas of work. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? Examination: 40% Controlled assessment 40% + 20%

CoPE CERTIFICATE OF PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS (ASDAN) QUALIFICATION: Level 1 – 25 points (equivalent to GCSE grade E/F) Level 2 – 46 points (equivalent to GCSE grade B) Wider Skills – Level 1/Level 2 WHAT IS CoPE? The Certificate of Personal Effectiveness is a qualification that offers imaginative ways of accrediting young people’s activities. It promotes a wide range of personal qualities, abilities and achievements for young people, as well as introducing them to new activities and challenges. WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? Be able to work independently and make connections over different areas of learning Self-motivation and good organisational skills are essential for this course WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? You will gain credits by completing different challenges. You must produce a portfolio of evidence, demonstrating the skills you have acquired throughout the course. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? There is no examination and the course is assessed continually through the portfolio.

ACCESS DRAMA (non-accredited)

WHAT IS ACCESS DRAMA? By opting into Access Drama you will become part of a working, small scale Theatre Company to develop the skills and experience needed to perform in a range of different styles of drama. The aim of Access Drama is to create quality performances for a range of audiences in school and outside of the Academy. You will develop your own performance skills with many chances to perform and gain feedback in a supportive atmosphere. WHAT SORT OF PROJECTS COULD I DO ON THE COURSE? Create pieces for Years 7 and 8 students that will be shown in an assembly Work with other school groups Create work for the school Christmas show Visit venues for workshops Work with different practitioners Go on trips to see live productions Work on the school show Performance opportunities may include the Shakespeare Schools Festival and the Furness

Academy Christmas Concert sketches/pantomime OPPORTUNITIES TO DEVELOP OTHER SKILLS SUCH AS: Set design Lighting Directing Costume/make-up design Dance Music Script writing Advertising/marketing WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE? ACCESS DRAMA will help you if you require more time to develop the skills which are vital for both GCSE Drama and BTEC Performing Arts.

BTEC PERFORMING ARTS LEVEL 1/LEVEL 2 FIRST AWARD (DANCE OR ACTING) The BTEC first award in Performing Arts is equivalent to one GCSE at grade A*-C. You will choose to specialise in one of the following pathways: Acting Dance WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? Have an interest in performing arts and associated activities Want to develop your knowledge and skills in drama and dance Enjoy researching and investigating rather than just being taught Want a chance of practical experience Have an interest in practical performance (drama or dance) Be able to meet deadlines WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? You will be treated as a professional performer and understand how to work well within the performing arts industry. The course is highly independent and you will regularly be asked to prepare your own work. It is a very practical course in which you will hone your skills as an actor or dancer. Opportunities to view professional productions Create and rehearse for a number of performances Make presentations on different aspects of your research Develop presentation skills using displays, audio-visual and computer-aided materials Solo, paired and small group work Research new topics using the internet, relevant textbooks, journals and industry produced publications Tutor-led discussions Develop strategies to plan and evaluate your work effectively HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? The course will be assessed through a mixture of portfolio work and controlled assessment. There are 2 units which are assessed by your teacher: Dance or Acting Skills Preparation, Performance and Production And one unit that is recorded and sent away to be assessed.

DRAMA GCSE (Edexcel) WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? Expressing yourself in an active and exciting way Working in a group Contributing your ideas and taking on board those of others Exploring ideas by putting yourself in other people’s shoes Playing many parts in different imaginary situations Creating your own drama work Looking at plays written by other people WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? You will develop your improvisation and acting skills to a higher level. You will also look at plays in more detail and at different ways of bringing a script to life on stage. There will be more opportunities to explore themes and issues using a range of drama techniques. If you are more interested in the technical aspects of drama (for example set design or lighting) you could focus on these for part of the course. You will learn how drama is created, including all the acting and staging skills that are needed to put a piece of drama on to the stage. You will obtain many skills that are highly valued in any walk of life including teamwork and confidently presenting yourself in public. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? Two units of work are assessed under controlled conditions by your teacher and include both written and practical elements. You will explore themes, ideas and then a full play in a practical way supported by your written documentary response. These two units are marked by your teacher. For the final unit, you will perform a play with a visiting examiner in the audience. There are no written examinations but you will be required to perform in the play, as an actor or contribute a form of design to a production such as costume, lighting or sound.

ENGLISH GCSE (AQA) GCSE English Language GCSE English Literature WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? A desire to enhance written and oral communication skills: for example, to develop the

capacity to write effectively and read with insight Enthusiasm for various types of reading including novels, plays, poems and media texts WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? You will study for a GCSE English Language qualification. This will involve a range of literary texts, including writers like John Steinbeck. You will also study a variety of media texts ranging from moving image to magazines. You will have to produce your own writing in various styles aimed at different audiences with an array of purposes. For example, you will have to entertain as well as inform and advise. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? English Language Examinations: 40% of the overall mark based on responses to media texts Controlled assessments: 60% of the overall mark of which: 20% is based on speaking and listening tasks, plus 40% based on reading and writing skills These are formal assessments held within the Academy based on our study of: extended reading; the production of creative writing and a study of spoken language. English Literature Examinations: 75% of the overall mark is based on a range of poetry, plays and novels. These will be assessed in two formal externally marked examination papers. Controlled assessment: 25% of the overall mark is based on your study of Shakespeare and the literary heritage. As with all controlled assessments, this will be set formally within the Academy.

ACCESS HUMANITIES GEOGRAPHY (non-accredited)

History will be studied alongside Geography in the Access Humanities course, enabling students to specialise in Year 10.

If you have enjoyed Key Stage 3 Geography and want to have the opportunity to take your study further without the pressure of GCSE studies, this may be the course for you. Alternatively, you may want to take the Geography GCSE in the future but may not feel ready yet. In this case, the course will act as a solid foundation to further study. The course is designed so that there is much more time to devote to each topic enabling more active ‘hands on’ learning for example, model making and creative projects whilst still gaining the knowledge and skills that you would need if you wanted to continue to do the GCSE in the future. You will have the opportunity to discover Geography and the world around us in new ways through the media and arts using techniques such as photography, film making and role play. The course will also provide opportunities to work on practical elements outside of the classroom. WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE?

This course focuses on four main themes, two of which are Human and two Physical. There is also the opportunity to take part in fieldwork activities and practice other Geographical skills including the use of maps, ICT and GIS (Geographical Information Systems). The key themes of the course are: Coasts Ecosystems National Parks Population These themes have been chosen specifically to enable us to get out of the classroom as much as possible to practice our fieldwork skills and to experience geography outside of the classroom setting in our local environment. A Geography qualification can lead to further study and a range of jobs such as pollution control officer, geologist, countryside ranger, weather forecaster, property developer, work in tourism, conservation, environmental planning, regeneration, renewable energy, teaching, the media e.g. broadcasting. ASSESSMENT INFORMATION Two unit assessments are set by the examining board and two assessments are teacher set. You will be assessed four times in total and will produce a folder of work to provide additional evidence of your studies and understanding (teacher statements can be used as an alternative where necessary).

GEOGRAPHY GCSE Geography A (AQA)

This academic qualification should be taken through the EBACC Pathway 1 in Year 9; or studied in Year 10 or 11, to help maximise attainment levels. WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? Do you want to know how and why some human activities are damaging the environment? Do you want to know how decisions are made that will affect the future of the planet? Are you interested in the natural world and how it was formed? Do you want to know how actions that we take locally have global effects? If you like to question the world around you and want to develop skills in map reading, GIS and fieldwork techniques, this is the course for you. WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? This course will offer you the opportunity to study a broad range of subjects of geographical importance from local issues like off shore wind farms and tourism to global concerns such as climate change, deforestation and water shortage. To do this, the course combines both Human and Physical Geography to enable you to understand the impact that human activities have on the earth and the scientific principles that underpin the planet’s changing nature. The key themes of the course are: The restless earth The living world Water on the land Changing urban Environments The Coastal zone Population change Tourism Geography fieldwork will give you the opportunity to put the knowledge that you have learnt in the classroom into practice. You will need to plan your enquiry and carry out the practical investigations, record your findings and critically analyse them. You will gain a knowledge and understanding of our environment and will be able to discuss solutions that may protect it for future generations. A Geography qualification can lead to further study and a range of jobs such as pollution control officer, geologist, countryside ranger, weather forecaster, property developer, work in tourism, conservation, environmental planning, regeneration, renewable energy, teaching, the media e.g. broadcasting. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED ? Examination: Sit two written examination papers worth 75% of the total mark and practical fieldwork investigation that you will write up individually.

HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE GCSE SINGLE AWARD (OCR) WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED ? An interest in health and/or social care (maybe as a future career) An ability to contribute to active lessons - including discussions, presentations and team

challenges. Keen research skills and the ability to work independently are also very important WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE ? The focus of the course will be to develop your knowledge and understanding of the relevant professions as well as considering key issues relating to personal development. You will study two units of work: Understanding Personal Development and Relationships (examination unit) Health, Social Care and Early Years Provision (controlled assessment) HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED ? The assessment for this course is one controlled assessment (60%) and one examination (40%). The examination is taken in January and so it is important that students are committed. The controlled assessment is a lengthy piece of work which requires students to work independently on a number of key tasks.

ACCESS HUMANITIES HISTORY (non-accredited)

Geography will be studied alongside History in the Access Humanities course, enabling students to specialise in Year 10. WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? An interest in what happened in the past and a desire to broaden your knowledge, skills and understanding of Historical events.

WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? You will study a number of key skills and concepts which will develop your understanding of historical events. The topics you will cover are Crime and punishment through the ages; World War I; World War II; migration and a local history study.

HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? The History Upgrade is a non accredited course. However, enjoyment of the course and a demonstration of progression in the key skills may lead you towards the History GCSE in the future. One aim of the course is that your general literacy skills will improve.

HISTORY GCSE (Edexcel) This academic qualification should be taken through the EBACC Pathway 1 in Year 9; or studied in Year 10 or 11, to help maximise attainment levels.

WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? An ability to use evidence to study the lives and events of people in the past to reconstruct

what happened and why A desire to develop your thinking powers, your ability to construct reasoned arguments and

your ability to understand people’s actions and the way modern life has developed.

WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? You will undertake training in: solving problems, analysing evidence to reach a judgement, evaluating historical sources for reliability and usefulness, identifying cause of events and the consequences of them. You will develop your ability to evaluate how reliable the historic evidence is, decide how useful it is to your investigations and come to logical and reasoned conclusions based on what you have found out.

HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? You will take three examinations and conduct a coursework investigation spread through the year. At the end of each theme, there will be a celebration of learning in a creative activity. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? This course can be followed purely for interest and enjoyment or as a stepping stone towards GCSE. You can choose one language from French or German. In both cases, you will experience the most success if you have already studied your chosen language at Key Stage 3. The emphasis will be on communication and having fun learning a foreign language. There will be regular assessments following each theme which could be used towards an external qualification if you wish, although this is not a compulsory requirement of the course.

ACCESS MUSIC (non-accredited) This course does not lead to a formal qualification. However, you may be able to prepare for and take Rock School/ABRSM/Trinity College of Music graded instrument/vocal examinations during the year if you are of a suitable standard. WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? The Music Performing Skills enrichment course is designed to prepare/up-skill you for taking GCSE Music or BTEC Music the following year. It may also be taken as a stand alone course that serves to develop your personal desire to learn an instrument but not necessarily lead to a qualification. You will need to be enthusiastic and committed to developing your individual instrumental/vocal performing skills. WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? Instrumental/voice tuition You will spend the majority of your time learning/practising a chosen instrument or voice. You will be encouraged to receive paired tuition and ensemble skill coaching via the Rock n Pop Academy or Classix Academy tuition programmes that operate after school hours. Listening and Theory You will listen to relevant leading artists in your chosen instrument/genre and study their music and skills. MUSIC GCSE (EDEXCEL) WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? You will need to be enthusiastic and committed to music and willing to participate in at least one musical activity throughout the course. You are strongly advised to have studied an instrument at Key Stage 3 during years 7 and 8. If you have not received instrumental/vocal tuition in years 7 and 8 then you should consider taking the Access Music course first. WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? General You will learn about four 'Areas of Study'. These will form the basis through which your performing, composing and appraising/listening skills are developed. The four Areas of Study are: Western Classical Music; Music in the 20th Century; Popular Music in Context and World Music. You will explore these Areas of Study through a number of ‘Set Works’ . Composing You will compose two pieces of music during supervised time. You will record your compositions and produce a score /commentary for each of them. Performing You will perform two different pieces on an instrument/voice of your choice. One will be a solo performance and the other will be an ensemble performance. Instrumental/voice tuition You will be expected to learn an instrument /voice via the Rock n Pop Academy or Classix Academy tuition programmes. This course is designed to provide an introduction to the accredited courses the PE Department offers and develop skills, techniques and knowledge that will be needed to complete the BTEC and GCSE PE courses. future A willingness to work hard at both the theory and practical aspects of the course. You will

The course will introduce aspects of GCSE PE, BTEC Sport and BTEC Outdoor and Adventurous Activities for students who have an interest in taking an accredited course at a later date. The course will mainly be practically based but does include both theory and practical study with on-going assessment of individual performance. Students will be expected to take on a variety of roles and work to develop their knowledge and skills in these areas. There will be the opportunity to gain accreditation during this course which will be beneficial in following courses such as BTEC and GCSE. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? Students will have 5 lessons per week on the Access course; at least 3 lessons will be practically based and concentrate on improving performance and knowledge in a variety of activities. BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Public Services WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? This qualification aims to prepare you for entry into initial employment in the Public Service sector, or further study in Public Services at College. Throughout the course you will enhance your personal skills, build your individual confidence and the course will give you a broad introduction to the Public Service sector. The programme of study will develop your understanding of the relevant practical skills and, associated knowledge needed in this field of work. Good use of ICT and the ability to communicate effectively are essential skills for this course. You will also be required to research independently and work as part of a team. FIRST CERTIFICATE IN PRINCIPLES OF SCIENCE AND APPLICATION OF SCIENCE (BTEC EDEXCEL) WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? A sensible, safe and organised approach to work Interested in developing a range of work-related skills alongside Science theory and practical

The First Certificate in the Principles of Science is completed by the end of Year 10 and the sec-ond qualification, the First Certificate in the Application of Science is completed in Year 11. Both courses require students to pass an external examination. We are available to sit on November, March and June of each year. Students may re-sit the examinations, but must pass to gain the overall qualification. Each qualification also involves completing assignments that include practical investigations, presentations, field studies, research and essays in the three disciplines; Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Period 6 gives students the opportunity to complete additional work in an environment that is tailored to the course – with specialist staff on hand to assist. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? The four units are assessed through a mixture of examination, coursework and portfolio production. Assessment takes place both internally and externally.

GCSE LEISURE AND TOURISM DOUBLE AWARD (2 GCSEs) WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? Students will need to have the desire and enthusiasm to study and investigate the leisure and tourism industry eg; Sport and physical recreation, arts and entertainment, countryside recreation, travel agents and accommodation and catering. Candidates will need to investigate the facilities used for leisure purposes by people living within the chosen area as well as the facilities and attractions which appeal to people visiting the area as tourists. Proficient communication skills, both verbally and written Good numeracy skills are essential Competent use of ICT The ability and motivation to work independently Problem solving skills WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? Actively engage in the study of leisure and tourism to develop as effective and

society HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? To complete the double award (2 GCSEs) students are required to complete all four units; Leisure and Tourism Provision (60% controlled assessment) Leisure and Tourism Destinations (40% written paper) Leisure and Tourism Organisations (30% controlled assessment) Choice and Change in Leisure and Tourism (20% written paper) WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE: If you are interested in a career in the leisure or tourism industry this is the course for you. You

could also go on to study a GCSE in Travel and Tourism. The qualification can lead to

employment in call centres, travel agencies, hotels and restaurants, holiday companies, tourist

information and events management.
