“Ill-met by moonlight proud
Titania”
My wife should be in love with me in this moonlight. Moonlight is for lovers. Yet she
refuses to do what I ask. It makes me angry to meet her here in the moonlight.
Shakespeare makes the first meeting between Oberon and Titania confrontational to show how strong their conflict and emotions are. In this scene, Oberon rides a horse to emphasise his stature and power. The fairies run away in fear as he approaches. Shakespeare makes Oberon’s first words angry and aggressive.
