Many decades ago, it was May 1980, I graduated from high

school. Instead of continuing my education at a university of

applied sciences - business administration would have been

the obvious choice - I looked for a job and I started my career

in the financial world. Today, almost 40 years later and still

a long way to go before my retirement, I’m surrounded with

young professionals that all did graduate from college or

university. When listening to their stories about how schools

operate these days, I know for sure that I too would have

continued my education instead of joining the workforce.

I my days at school, classroom education at a single pace

was all there was. I remember the drumming of English verbs

and the obligation to remain silent during math lessons,

because my way of solving the math exercises didn’t match

the teacher’s method from his math book. It was easier for

me to understand and faster to solve, but that didn’t matter.

The lack of a tailored approach made me decide to continue

my education at home after workhours. It didn’t stop me

from reaching my bachelor’s degree. And more importantly,

it didn’t stop me from learning. In fact, I never have or will

stop learning.

Whatever job I had, what I do today or what I will do until I die,

I have to maintain an up-to-date skillset. It makes that I’m still

relevant today. It keeps me younger than my age suggests.

With the means that are available today, continuous learning

is easy to do. Remember the Martini commercial? Any time,

any place, anywhere. That’s how I learn today. Not with the

drink but at work, at home, during a holiday. In the evening or

the weekend. On a plane to wherever I’m going.

In some cases, learning for a job and learning for leisure

activities even blend: look at LinkedIn Learning for instance.

More often, access to education is provided in the context
