Learning by Design

Moving from illuminating learners to learning by design

– Moving from using a floodlight to illuminate the fact that all of us are learners…

– To using a spotlight to provide intense insight into what each child needs to maximize their learning

– Last year I ended my conversation by asking you “are you ready?” and are you willing to be “architects of the future?”

Page 5: Learning by design

Are You Ready?

To reinvent, redesign and reshape the learning experience for your students and teachers?

Page 6: Learning by design

The New Norm

• Fewer dollars• Fewer staff• New accountability• New collaborations

– North Texas Visioning Consortium– Western States Benchmarking Consortium

• Focus on learning in addition to teaching

• More virtual/digital access to resources

Leading change (again)

“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new modelthat makes theexisting model obsolete.” —R. Buckminster Fuller, American inventor and futurist

Learning by Design

• Learning by design implies paying attention to the little things that make learning personal for students or any of us as learners.

• Are you able to focus clearly enough to determine what each child needs to experience maximum learning?

Selective Attention

Do you really see the potential and needs of each student?

Accountability creep

None of these schools currently have enough students in the subgroup to “count”, but the middle school will aggregate enough within the next two years to affect their rating.

The middle school subgroup has enough students to count for ratings, but none of the elementary schools have large enough numbers to count yet.

Time of Transition

• From who we are to who we want to be

• We need to be poised tore-imagine the story

• What do we need to be paying attention to during the 2011-12 school year?

Page 20: Learning by design

Expectations

“Work the system”– Use the support of our academic and

technology, campus, and district services teams to help identify and design action plans to maximize the level ofachievement of all students

– Access, understand, and act on the information available for each student’s achievement to design meaningful, individual learning experiences

– Structure tutorial sessions to meet areas of targeted learning rather than broad areas and ensure each need is met

Page 21: Learning by design

Expectations

“Work the system”– Leverage the ability to work more directly

with schools of like characteristics in their learners without worry of geographic boundaries (clusters) through professional learning communities

– Continue the focus of building capacity within our principal cadre towards master principals with an emphasis on instructional leadership through our iLead meetings, 2nd Wednesday Virtual meetings, and other learning opportunities

Page 22: Learning by design

Expectations

“Work the system”– Continue and expand the use of student

owned devices to personalize, and make more relevant, learning opportunities for students

– Continue and expand collaborative learning experiences so students actively contribute to a broader effort of building knowledge

– Use the Plano Walk-Through process to ensure student engagement and ownership of learning is present in each classroom

Page 23: Learning by design

So here is the “system”

We have flattened the system to have all of the major support divisions working with fewer boundaries to support you and keep you “in the loop”

Learning by Design

Design is an ongoing process where we will often learn by failure, even with the best intentions and preparation
