CAR MAINTENANCE MISTAKES AND
HOW NOT TO MAKE THEM
IGNORING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT
There are a number of reasons the check engine light can come on in your vehicle. It could be a minor problem or it
could be major. Either way, DO NOT wait to get it checked out. Even if it is something minor, if not looked at it could turn
into a major problem. Get the vehicle looked at by a mechanic as soon as the light comes on (some mechanics will do it
for free or add the cost to any work they end up having to do) to save yourself a possible hefty bill in the future.
NOT CHECKING YOUR TIRE PRESSURE
Tire pressure can be something that is easy to forget about until it’s too late. On average, tires lose 1 to 2 pounds of
pressure for every 10 degree drop in temperature. Low air pressure could lead to bad fuel economy or a blowout. Even if
the tires do not look low they still could be. Check your tires air pressure regularly. Check your vehicles owners manual
for correct tire pressure (If you don’t have an owners manual you can easily find the information online).
OIL CHANGES
Motor oil and car engine technology has changed a lot over the years, so changing your oil every 3,000 miles is no long-
er necessary (unless you have an older vehicle, then more frequent oil changes may be necessary). The average oil
change interval on todays cars is around 7,800 miles. Still, DO NOT SKIP OIL CHANGES. Old motor oil breaks down in
your engine and can damage parts. It is also important to use the correct motor oil for your vehicle. All of this information
can be found in your owners manual or online.
NEGLECTING FLUID CHECKS
Oil is not the only fluid that needs to be replaced in your vehicle. Other fluids that should regularly be checked, topped
off, or replaced are: Brake fluid, transmission fluid, engine coolant, and power steering fluid. For specifications on when
these fluids should be serviced consult your owners manual.
NOT INSPECTING YOUR BRAKES
Don’t ignore any squealing or grinding noises coming from your brakes. Worn out brakes can be extremely dangerous as
they increase stopping distance or could lead to brake failure. So if you hear a squealing or grinding noise when you ap-
ply your brakes have it evaluated by a mechanic as soon as possible.
QUESTION 1:
True or False, you need to get your oil changed every 3,000 miles?
QUESTION 2:

QUESTION 3:
On average, how many pounds of pressure do your tires lose for every 10 degree temperature drop?
QUESTION 4:
True or False, it’s ok to ignore your check engine light as long as your car feels like it’s running fine?
QUESTION 5:
What should you do if you hear squealing or grinding sounds while brak-ing?
