4. Memory Refresh: Subject
Learning 2.0
Web 2.0: Enables collaboration & interaction
Learning environment
Special needs
Aimed at mental disability
On the iPad
4
5. Memory Refresh: Research conclusions
Digital divide
Private network makes them feel different
Need of adapted Text-to-speech (too complicated now)
Can do more than most think!
Touchscreens take away the thinking of bringing the mouse to a button to do an action
5
6. Memory Refresh: Application Idea
Part I: Facebook application
Accessibility to social technologies
Text-to-Speech + gathering data
Pictograms
Protect from abuse, bad social behavior,
Part II: Visualization application
2nd priority: If goals part I achieved!
Clustering similar students
Focus on certain words
Avoiding certain texts
COMBINED: A support learning application without the users even knowing it!
6
7. New Work
7
8. Varia
Contacted organizations
Facebook -> Couldnt answer research related questions
Amichai -> Not working on something like it
Tested existing Facebook applications
Tabs without pictograms -> More guessing
Could not understand statuses
Panicked when saw unknown friend request
Paper
Brainstorm Visualization application
Better to drop visualization application
Can import CSV file in existing apps (ex. Excel)
8
9. Iteration II
Mockup since problems paper prototype
iOS Interface Builder
Biggest resemblance
Avoids double work
Needs controller view classes
Goal: Testing usability
Think aloud test
9
10. Iteration II - Evaluation
Scenarios for person with mental disability:
Who was the last one that posted something on your wall?
Let something to be read out loud (for example a wallpost).
Update your status (again with a popup to see their reaction).
Whose birthday is it today?
When is event X?
Can you read out loud what person Y said to person Z?
Start a new Facebook chat.
Can you check who your friends are?
Of which groups are you a member?
10
11. Iteration II - Evaluation
Some questions afterwards:
Have you ever used Facebook?
Do you have a Facebook account yourself? If not, interested in one?
Any experience with a touchscreen? Could be a smartphone,
Any with the iPad?
11
12. Iteration II - Evaluation
1 person with mental disability
Most scenarios successfully
Scenario 2 other way than intended
Problem with scenario 4
Trouble with imagining something unreal
Expert feedback
Really positive reaction
Dilemma selection -> Consistency with existing
Buttons: Always speak out loud + navigate
Other suggestions: Hierarchy for status updates, changeable font
12
13. Iteration II - Demo
13
14. Iteration III
Implementation of application
Facebook SDK
Text-to-Speech SDK (Nuance Dragon Mobile)
Progress:
Facebook connection: OK
Text-to-Speech: OK
Full functionality Facebook: +/-
Selection gesture: NOT OK
Sclera pictograms to update status: +/-
14
15. Iteration III - Evaluation
First week after Easter holidays
At least 5 persons with mental disability
Goal: Usability & Usefulness (will they reuse it?)
Same scenarios + questions Iteration II
15
16. Iteration III - Demo
16
17. Problems
17
18. Problems
Selection gesture adaption in iOS
Losing a lot of time with it -> Postponed evaluation moment
Memory management iPad
Coverflowcrashes
If friends > 200
18
19. The road ahead
19
20. Future Iterations
20
21. Iteration IV
Implementation
Adaptions after Iteration III
Add settings for guardians
Evaluation
Test settings if usable by persons without iPad and/or social network experience
Focus on:
Effectiveness: Success rates
Efficiency: Time to complete task
User satisfaction: Opinion about application
21
22. Iteration V
Implementation
Adaptions iteration IV
Translation functionality
Google Translate for statuses
Auto language detection
Already have trouble with 1 language
Friends without disability
Evaluate adaptions
10 persons with mental disability
Split up in 2 groups
1 my app1 existing text-to-speech app + FB website
Time difference & success rates
Questions checking feeling about app
If allowed enough time
Switch groups: Avoid biased result
Every person different level & experiences
22
