During induction you will be issued
with a password for accessing an
interactive learning website called U
to Learn Hairdressing. The website
has lots of interesting information
which will help you to complete your
knowledge assessments and guidance
on hairdressing techniques. All are
well presented and easy to understand.
The Learner Voice Groups
Each year has a group called the ‘Learner Voice Group’ where
Learner representatives meet with MJTS staff for discussions to
improve the Training School / courses. If you are interested in
representing your year please speak to Gabby McCormack or a
member of the Recruitment & Retention team.
The Training Programme
You will be required to attend the Training School on a regular basis
as informed during induction. You must arrive on time. At the
Training School you will be trained and assessed to a standard
enabling you to achieve a City & Guilds of London level 2 Diploma in
Hairdressing NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) and Key Skills,
Application of number Level 1 / Communication Level 1.

GCSE A* - C before September 2012
GCSE A* - C with additional functionality after 2012
The life of a GCSE is 5 years. If you finish your framework 5 years
after the date of GCSE you will be required to take functional skills.

Sustainability and the Environment
Michaeljohn Training School has a commitment to working in an
environmentally friendly manner. We have worked alongside Manchester
City Council to achieve the Environmental Business Pledge ‘Bronze’
award. This initiative involved following a number of steps to show that
Michaeljohn is operating in a sustainable way to support the
environment. Posters like the two below are displayed around the
Training School to remind both staff and learners of their responsibility
towards the environment.

The minimum number of credits required for completion of this pathway is 68
credits (minimum of 58 for the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing plus 5

Level 2 Barbering
After completion of the Diploma L2 Hairdressing or L3 Hairdressing
Qualifications there is an opportunity to complete a second qualification in
Barbering. This Qualification is completed during a 15 week attendance
pattern. Units in the Barbering are cross mapped over from prior Ladies
Hairdressing
An additional 4 units are completed. Qualified working Barbers form part of
our delivery team ensuring a high skill level is achieved.
The barbering qualification consists of:

When you are being assessed you will be asked to complete the task
within the timescale given.
Any area of work that is assessed to City & Guilds standards will be
recorded in your City & Guilds record book.
Once you have successfully completed the level 2 certificate you
may be enrolled onto the level 3 certificate and become an Advanced

So what is my status?
At Michaeljohn we have many routes that allow young people to enter on to our
programmes.
Access to Apprenticeships Some learners are eligible for this
programme which means they will be
working towards City & Guilds of London
Level 2 or Level 3 Hairdressing
qualifications, Key Skills at level 1, 2 or
3, Employment Rights and
Responsibilities and Personal Learning
and Thinking Skills with enhancements
such as employability skills for a period
of 3 to 6 months.
You will spend a minimum of 30 hours per week at the Training School or
gaining work experience with a salon that engages with MJTS.
At the end of 3 to 6 months, Access to Apprentices should be enrolled to the
Intermediate Apprenticeship route or the Advanced Apprenticeship route and
be classed as ‘employed’ and have a contract of employment/employer
agreement.
Access to Apprentices enjoy the same opportunities as employed Apprentices
during their training and assessment.
A training allowance may be received.

employed. You are required to attend the Training School either fortnightly or

will work towards Key skills/Functional Skills at level 1 or 2, Employment Rights
and Responsibilities and Personal Learning and Thinking Skills with
enhancements such as employability skills.
You will be paid the Apprenticeship wage as a minimum.
Advanced Apprentices Advanced Apprentices are employed in a salon and have a contract of

Employment Rights and Responsibilities
In the hair sector evidence of delivery of Employee Rights and
Responsibilities (ERR) is a mandatory requirement for a framework
completion certificate.
The nine national outcomes of ERR are:
1. Knows and understands the range of employer and employee
statutory rights and responsibilities under Employment Law and
that employment rights can be affected by other legislation as
well. This should cover the Apprentice’s rights and responsibilities
under the Disability Discrimination Act/Equality Act, other
relevant equalities legislation and Health and Safety, together
with the responsibilities and duties of employers;
2. Knows and understands the procedures and documentation in their
organisation which recognises and protects their relationship with
their employer. Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity
training must be an integral part of the apprentice’s learning
programme;
3. Knows and understands the range of sources of information and
advice available to them on their employment rights and
responsibilities. Details of Access to Work and Additional
Learning Support must be included in the programme;
4. Understands the role played by their occupation with their
organisation and industry;
5. Has informed view of the types of career pathways that are open
to them;

6. Knows the types of representative bodies and understands their
relevance to their industry and organisation, and their main roles
and responsibilities;
7. Knows where and how to get information and advice on their
industry, occupation, training and career;
8. Can describe and work within their organisation’s principles and
codes of practice;
9. Recognises and can form a view on issues of public concern that
affect their organisation and industry
The NVQ Diploma includes Health and Safety. The other
requirements will be covered primarily at induction, with the
remaining aspects delivered at appropriate times during the
Apprenticeship programme.
Personal Learning and Thinking Skills Assessment Personal learning and thinking skills will be delivered, demonstrated
and assessed through naturally occurring evidence from the level 2
and level 3 NVQ diplomas as part of the framework.

Scheme of Work
The syllabus is displayed at the Training School. You will be given a
training timetable, to help you to prepare for the background knowledge
sessions delivered at the Training School.
Induction into the workplace (salon)
During your induction, you will be required to complete a document
relating to your salon (place of work). All work place induction documents
must be completed and returned to the Training School, for marking and
evaluation.
Initial Assessment
Before you join the training programme or immediately after you will
undergo an assessment in literacy, numeracy, practical skills and learning
style. The results enable the Training School to plan your training
programme. You will be informed of the results of your initial assessment.
Before you are signed onto the programme, you will complete the ‘off
programme period’ which is a settling in period either as Access to
Apprenticeship, Intermediate Apprenticeship or Advanced Apprenticeship
Learning Agreement
The plan is individual to you. The Learning Agreement is constructed when
you are enrolled to the programme. A member of MJTS staff will have
discussions with you and your employer (if you are employed or as soon as
you gain employment status) to help decide the units you want to take and
set target dates for you to achieve them. Key/Functional skills and
support is also recorded on the Learning Agreement. You will have access
to your Learning Agreement and receive a contract of
employment/Apprenticeship agreement stating the first day your became
employed. If you don’t receive a contract/agreement you must inform
MJTS immediately.
Reviews
Reviews will monitor your performance at the Training School and in your
salon. Your review takes place every 10/12 week or more frequently. They
include comments from the Training School, your employer and yourself.

Targets for achievement of the qualification will be set and monitored at
the review. It is important that you achieve the targets set and agreed
within your Learning Agreement.
Progress
You will mark off any completed
areas of the qualification in your
City & Guilds log book or e-
learning Learning Assistant with
your Assessor. This will help you
to monitor where you are up to
and also help to plan further
training and assessment. Your
progress may also recorded onto
the Training School Management
Information Systems.
R.P.L (Recognition of Prior Learning)
Skills that you already have, before or upon joining the course, for
example shampooing, reception work, may be immediately recognised.
Your Assessor will inform you of what evidence is required.
Recognition of Prior Learning will be assessed during your induction.
R.P.L is included in your Learning Agreement.
Skills for Life
“Skills for Life” are designed to broaden your skills in a wide range
of subjects including literacy, numeracy and general life skills.
Sessions on skills for life will be included into your background
knowledge and practical sessions. This will ensure that your
Functional Skills using number, reading, writing and responding skills
are developed, assessed and supported. Literacy, numeracy and
Functional Skills sessions assist learners to develop and improve
Skills for Life. MJTS learning support teachers are here to help you

Citizenship and Every Child Matters
At regular intervals during your framework, the Training School will
deliver in-house citizenship training sessions, or invite specialists to
raise awareness of issues that can play a role in personal
development. Sessions will include information on ‘well being’ (health)
and culture issues. Culture and Citizenship materials are available.
The Training School is committed to Every Child Matters and we

Agreement are required, please contact a Company Director. (The
agreement is not a legally binding document).
National Insurance Number (NI Number)
This is a card issued by the DWP (Department for Work and
Pensions). It contains your own personal number which will, via
contributions that are made from your wage throughout your
working life, entitle you to various state benefits, e.g.
sick/maternity pay and pensions. Your NI number must be given to
a Manager, Director or the Recruitment team at the Training
School. You cannot be enrolled to courses at the Training School
as Access to Apprentice, an Intermediate Apprentice or
Advanced Apprentice without a National Insurance number. If
you do not have or you have lost your National Insurance card
please inform a Manager or Director. The Training School will
require evidence that the number is personalised to yourself.
