Learning Outcomes
Mindanao University of Science and TechnologyC.M. Recto, Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao, Philippineshttp://www.must.edu.ph
• Human beings produce or construct meaning, understanding and knowledge based on their own experiences (Sternberg & Zhang, 2001)
• Learner-centered teaching serves as an approach to make students become engaged in their own learning process (Weinberger & McCombs, 2003)
• Students shall become active participants in the learning process for them to become responsible learners equipped school work, in their future careers and undertakings in life

Primary research aim: To investigate and analyze the effects of learner-centered teaching in English classes on students’ learning outcomes particularly on their learning skills and strategies in relation to the extent of implementation of learner-centered teaching in the classroom
Introduction
Mindanao University of Science and TechnologyC.M. Recto, Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao, Philippineshttp://www.must.edu.ph
• Classroom observationsconducted 30 classroom observations to all ten English teachers with the use of a modified researcher-made questionnaire (Bekele & Melesse, 2010) observed by the researcher and the Assistant Principal for Academics
• Survey Questionnaires1) learner-centered teaching questionnaire2) learning skills and strategies questionnaire (Pintrich et al., 1991) *completed by 900 high school students
Methodology
Mindanao University of Science and TechnologyC.M. Recto, Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao, Philippineshttp://www.must.edu.ph
• The effect of learner-centered teaching on the students’ learning outcomes was highly significant
• The more learner-centered the teacher is in the delivery of curriculum and instruction the more learning skills and strategies will be developed on the students
• The learner-centered learning environment is that teachers serve as the facilitators of learning (Weinberger & McCombs, 2003)
• The use of a variety of instructional materials, strategies and technology helps in making the teaching-learning more effective
Discussion Points
Mindanao University of Science and TechnologyC.M. Recto, Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao, Philippineshttp://www.must.edu.ph
• The way teachers teach creates impact on the development of child’s learning; in one way or another, the teaching approaches and strategies of the teachers influence the students’ learning skills and strategies
• Making the students master their learning skills and strategies can be taught to learn on their own; when teachers use more of learner-centered teaching in class, the learning skills and strategies of students develop or increase significantly because teachers can provide more opportunities for the enhancement of the learning skills and strategies of the students
Conclusion
Mindanao University of Science and TechnologyC.M. Recto, Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao, Philippineshttp://www.must.edu.ph
• It is very important that students are engaged and involved in their learning process so that they can adapt the skills and strategies for them to become responsible learners
