Running the show

Alison Ressler and Sharon Nelles aremembersofthesmallgroupofwomenwhorunmajorlawfirmsatthehighestlevels.FromtheirseatsonS&C’smanagementcommittee,theFirm’shighestgoverningbody,theyensuretheoverallhealthandsuccessoftheFirm.

Butyoudon’tgetthereovernight.LikealllawyersatS&C,AlisonandSharonhadgreatmentors,gotsupportandencouragement,andtookadvantageofeverylearningopportunity,fromthemomenttheywalkedthroughthedoor.Andtheytooksomerisks.

Alison’s30-yearM&Acareerhasbeenpunctuatedbysomeoftheworld’smosticonicdeals.Shesucceededbecause,astheLosAngelesoffice’sfirstjuniorassociate,sheputherselfoutthere.

“Youshouldn’tbeafraidtoparticipaterightoutofthegate,”shesays.“Evenasanassociate,Itriedtomakemypresenceknown,andthengotfeedbacktomakesurethatmycontributionswereaddingvalue.That’showyoulearntoparticipate,andalsohowtodoitinthemosteffectiveway.”

Sharonisoneofthetopcommerciallitigatorsintheworld.AsthelawyerMoody’s,JPMorganandVolkswagenhaveturnedtowithbet-the-companylitigation,shesays,“Becourageous.Itcanbehardtogiveyourselfpermissiontopursuesuccess.Butgoafterwhatyouwant—don’tbeafraidtoraiseyourhandforbigopportunitiesbecauseyou’reafraidtobetoldno.Sometimesyouwill,andthat’sOK.Butsometimesyoujustmightgetthatyes!”

Few women run major law firms at the highest levels. S&C has two.

Developing practice areas

Kathleen McArthur and Christine Trent Parker

Change came to the commodities, futures and deriva-tives practicein a big waywiththepassingoftheDodd-FrankWallStreetReformandConsumerProtectionAct.Historically,tradinginthesemarketswasalmostentirelyunregulated.Clientswhohadbeenconductingbusinessfordecadesorlongernowneededtocomplywiththeregula-tions,allofwhichhavechangedtheirbusinessesdramatically.

AndKathleenMcArthurandChristineTrentParkerarethego-toadvisersinthisnewfrontier.

“Everyoneislearningtheregulatoryrequire-mentsatthesametime,”saysChristine,aspecialcounselinourCommodities,FuturesandDe-rivativesGroup,“sonewlawyerscanhaveabigimpact.”

Commodities—thinkgold,sugar,electricityorevenBitcoin—areaglobalbusiness.Onecli-entmightbeextractingandsellingplatinuminCanada.AnothermightbetradingthatplatinumfromdesksinNewYork,LondonandTokyo—makingthetradingrisksglobaltoo.

“Formanyoftheseproducts,themarketsaregloballyintegrated,andourclientsrunglobaltradingdesks.AtraderinNewYorkorHoustonmanagesriskduringtheU.S.tradingday,thenpassesresponsibilitytoTokyoorSingapore,andthetradingriskmovesaroundtheworldwiththesun,”saysKathleenMcArthur,alitigationpartnerinthegroup.“Ourworkisintellectuallyrewardingbecauseweneedtounderstandthetechnicalnatureofthesebusinessesinordertoadvocateeffectivelyforourclientsbeforeregula-torsaroundtheworld.”

Thepracticeistrulycross-disciplinary,withliti-gatorsandgeneralpracticelawyersworkingsidebysideoneverythingfromregulatoryenforce-menttointernalinvestigationstostrategicadviceoninnovativetradingsystems.It’soneoftheareaswhereS&C’sgeneralistethosismostvividlyondisplay.

“Forus,everydayisdifferent,”saysKathleen.“And,foralawyerwhowantsaconstantchal-lenge,thisisareallyexcitingplacetobe.”
