Running the show
Alison Ressler and Sharon Nelles aremembersofthesmallgroupofwomenwhorunmajorlawfirmsatthehighestlevels.FromtheirseatsonS&C’smanagementcommittee,theFirm’shighestgoverningbody,theyensuretheoverallhealthandsuccessoftheFirm.
Butyoudon’tgetthereovernight.LikealllawyersatS&C,AlisonandSharonhadgreatmentors,gotsupportandencouragement,andtookadvantageofeverylearningopportunity,fromthemomenttheywalkedthroughthedoor.Andtheytooksomerisks.
Alison’s30-yearM&Acareerhasbeenpunctuatedbysomeoftheworld’smosticonicdeals.Shesucceededbecause,astheLosAngelesoffice’sfirstjuniorassociate,sheputherselfoutthere.
“Youshouldn’tbeafraidtoparticipaterightoutofthegate,”shesays.“Evenasanassociate,Itriedtomakemypresenceknown,andthengotfeedbacktomakesurethatmycontributionswereaddingvalue.That’showyoulearntoparticipate,andalsohowtodoitinthemosteffectiveway.”

Change came to the commodities, futures and deriva-tives practicein a big waywiththepassingoftheDodd-FrankWallStreetReformandConsumerProtectionAct.Historically,tradinginthesemarketswasalmostentirelyunregulated.Clientswhohadbeenconductingbusinessfordecadesorlongernowneededtocomplywiththeregula-tions,allofwhichhavechangedtheirbusinessesdramatically.
