LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAM FOR 2014
PLD
BUILDING
GLOBAL LEADERS
Most successful companies are investing in the next generation of leaders to ensure long-term
competitiveness in today’s evolving economy. To achieve their corporate agenda, leaders must
have a broad perspective of management, a deep understanding of the global marketplace, and
a solid foundation in the core business functions that drive the organization.
While on-the-job experience and internal training help to shape future leaders, the Program
for Leadership Development (PLD) at Harvard Business School (HBS) Executive Education
accelerates this process by exposing functional managers to real-world business lessons.
HBS provides a truly global experience.
At PLD, you will work closely with elite industry peers from more than 40 countries. In addition,
you will interact with distinguished HBS faculty, who in 2012 collectively researched and wrote
nearly 300 case studies representing more than 60 countries. This is where world leaders convene.
You will emerge from PLD with the confidence and strategic skills to take on greater cross-
functional responsibilities and with an action plan tailored to your personal leadership goals
and the challenges facing your company. With a broader understanding of how to enhance
organizational performance and build competitive advantage, you will become the visionary
leader that tomorrow’s business world will demand.

SHAPING LEADERSHIP FOR SUccESSFocused on leadership, change, and innovation, PLD lets you step back from day-to-day responsibilities, reassess your value to the company, develop a broader perspective of your leadership capabilities, and create a personal action plan to implement in your company.
The curriculum is composed of four educational modules—two distance-learning and two on-campus—plus a fifth optional two-week session after which you achieve HBS alumni status.* The first module builds on foundational business skills; the second presents functional and cross-functional business approaches; the third hones strategy and leadership skills through business simulations; and the fourth sets the stage for leading innovation and change in a global business environment.
One of the key elements of PLD is the dynamic exchange that takes place in your living group. Each group is carefully composed of eight accomplished executives who span industries and countries. By sharing diverse perspectives, you will explore business cases from new angles as you build a global support network.
PLD inspires you to look within and beyond as you explore personal goals and advance your company’s objectives. Through professional coaching and facilitated peer feedback, you will develop your leadership style and create an action plan that is unique to you and your organization.
*HBS alumni status also may be earned through 10 additional days (two credit weeks) of our open-enrollment or custom programs.

“ PLD was an important life experience—I only wish I had done it 10 years earlier. The cases were highly effective in demonstrating principles, and the fourth module really opened my eyes to the essence of leadership. I found the self-reflections insightful and the positive feedback powerful, something that I will definitely carry forward in my teams.” adam Cox, CommerCial exeCutive MBD Credit Solutions (Pty) Ltd., South Africa
ADMISSIONS INFORMATIONThe Admissions committee begins reviewing applications four months prior to the start of each program. Once the review process has begun, qualified candidates are admitted on a rolling, space-available basis.

AcHIEVING ALUMNI STATUS
Visit www.exed.hbs.edu/programs/pld/ for complete admissions requirements and to apply online. You also can print the application and mail it, or fax it to +1-617-496-1731. Applications are due four weeks before the program start date. Early application is recommended.
Each participant must be nominated and supported by a company sponsor—an executive who is involved in the participant’s development and who is committed to remaining engaged with the participant throughout the learning process. This indicates that the participant is considered to be an outstanding prospect for company leadership within the organization. Eligible candidates are full-time employees of their sponsoring organizations who agree to return to full-time managerial roles within their companies upon completion of the program.
Selective enrollment of the most qualified and diverse group from the pool of candidates enhances the learning experience and the takeaway value for supporting organizations. In seeking senior executives with demonstrated leadership ability and promise, the Admissions Committee takes into account a candidate’s organizational level; management experience, particularly in senior management; and future responsibilities. With a focus on professional achievement, the Admissions Committee assembles qualified individuals who are senior-level decision makers and represent a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds. Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential for the completion of course assignments and active engagement in fast-moving discussions. If English is the applicant’s second language or if he or she has less than one year’s experience working in an English-speaking environment, a brief statement documenting proficiency in English is required. The Admissions Committee also may require a telephone or personal interview as part of the admissions process.
PLD offers a path to HBS alumni status. This significant achievement provides access to a vast global network of executives, Alumni Club and Association members, and Baker Library resources; a 30 percent discount on open-enrollment Executive Education programs; and more. After completing all four core modules of PLD, you can earn HBS alumni status by completing Module 5 or by completing an additional 10 days (two credit weeks) of our open-enrollment or custom programs within five years of finishing either PLD or the first qualifying program. Qualifying programs include those completed within two years prior to your PLD start date. Learn more at: www.exed.hbs.edu/programs/pld/Pages/alumni.aspx
