The importance of updating and ensuring all changes are approved by the Master prior to departure is underlined. PART 4 - Bridge Watchkeeping The responsibilities of the deck watchkeeping officer as defined by the STCW Convention are examined in detail in this part of the training package.

PART 5 - Engine Room WatchkeepingOn ships running UMS, the responsibilities of thewatchkeeping officer, as defined in the STCWConvention, will generally fall to the Duty Engineer. It isthis job that is the subject of this video. The importanceof knowing the engine room machinery and performingregular rounds of the engine room is emphasised.

PART 6 - Working with PilotsThis video examines how the Master and deck watch-keeping officers can obtain the best from a pilot andcomply with their obligations under the STCWConvention. Pilots should be treated with professionalism and respect but their actions need tobe monitored. The importance of carrying out a complete and thorough Master-Pilot Exchange is under-lined.

PART 7 - Accident Prevention - The Human FactorThis video looks at some of the ways that incidentsdevelop and how good resource management can helpprevent them. There is a section on the importance ofcarrying out emergency drills and the lessons learntfrom them.

PART 8 - Five Case StudiesFive incidents are re-created where the bridge team failedto keep the ship out of danger. All of these are examplesof poor resource management. The incidents are re-created using actors and showing the data available tothe bridge team. The audience are invited to view eachincident and then to stop and analyse what went wrongand discuss how things could have been done better.
