Received a grant to implement the use of Nintendo Wii in my physical education c lassroom to conduct research with my high school students to determine i f exercise using act iv ity-based games on the Nintendo Wii could be as effect ive cardiovascularly as tradit ional forms of exercise. Students in my school l ived in neighborhoods that were not always safe for chi ldren to play outside and students were looking for innovating ways for chi ldren to get the recommended amount of exercise indoors. Students wore heart rate monitors to gather heart rate data whi le performing both types of exercise over a 6-week period of t ime and then traveled to the state level conference to present the results in the fal l . The results showed that, in fact, act iv ity-based games on the Nintendo Wii could be as effect ive cardiovascularly as tradit ional forms of exercise and students bel ieved these devices could be great ways for chi ldren l iv ing in unsafe neighborhoods to get the recommended amount of exercise per week. Addit ional ly , students presented their results at our school health fair they organized where they demonstrated and al lowed parents to play act iv ity-based Nintendo Wii games while wearing heart rate monitors.

I was a key member of grant team and led and managed the planning, development, and implementation of the adaptive learning component of a Gates Foundation funded grant designed to increase the number of nurses who moved from the RN to BSN degree in an effort to provide better patient care in local hospitals in West Tennessee. In the f irst semester pi lot, we were able to show a $205,000 ROI on a $50,000 investment for a two-semester pi lot. The project consisted of the development of four courses in Healthcare Leadership in the School of Health Studies and four courses in the Col lege of Nursing as wel l as working with West Tennessee Healthcare to recruit nurses with RN degrees.

I secured an internal grant to work with a local developer to have a v irtual real ity project created to serve as a proof of concept for potential ly expanding lab experiences for students in our UM Global program. Faculty provided a l ist of ideas on how the use of v irtual real ity could be used in their courses ( face-to-face, hybrid, and onl ine) and our school is currently seeking large grants to support the development and implementation of future projects.
