The Necessity of Collaboration

• Human Service Organizations are part of a larger ecosystem of actors

• They need to engage many different stakeholders if they hope to address today’s pressing social and environmental challenges.

• Strong peripheral vision—seeing and developing a shared understanding of the system in which they operate

• The Collective whole: systems mapping, data visualization, and network mapping tools now makes it easier to see a collective whole that was previously only visible in pieces.

Kaldor-Hicks• Kaldor-Hicks efficiency (named for

Nicholas Kaldor and John Hicks is a measure of economic efficiency . An outcome is considered more efficient if a Pareto optimal outcome can be reached by providing sufficient compensation for those that are made better off to those that are made worse off.

• What does this mean in the context of human services decision making?

PARETO• Pareto efficiency requires making

every party involved better off (or at least no worse off).

• A more efficient outcome can in fact leave some people worse off

KALDOR-HICKS

Pareto efficiency vs Kaldor-Hicks

• John Farmer•Has 10 acres of land where he grows apples, peaches , pears and vegetables. He uses pesticides.

• Mary Organic•Has 3 acres of land where she grows blueberries, corn and tomatoes 100% organically.

John Farmer and Mary Organic

• John now has 9 acres of land.

•Mary now has 20 acres of land

Is this Pareto Efficient?

• Rays in St. Petersburg.• Low income families displaced.
