Chapter-2

Thought Provoking Speechby Shri Azim Premji at IIM, Ahmedabad

Chairman, Wipro Corporation

PRELUDE

A very inspiring,“While change and uncertainty have always been a part of life,

what has been shocking over the last year has been both the quantum and suddenness of change. For many people who were cruising along on placid waters, the wind was knocked out of their sails. The entire logic of doing business was turned on its head. Not only business, but also every aspect of human life has been impacted by the change. What lies ahead is even more dynamic and uncertain. I would like to use this opportunity to share with you some of our own guiding principles of staying afloat in a changing world. This is based on our experience in Wipro. I hope you find them useful.”

LESSON 1

“Be alert for the first signs of change.”Change descends on every One equally; it is just that some realize

it faster. Some changes are sudden but many others are gradual. While sudden changes get attention because they are dramatic, it is the gradual changes that are ignored till it is too late. You must have all heard of story of the frog in boiling water. If the temperature of the water is suddenly increased, the frog realizes it and jumps out of the water. But if the temperature is very slowly increased, one degree at a time, the frog does not realize it till it boils to death. You must develop your

own early warning system, which warns you of changes and calls your attention to it. In the case of change, being forewarned is being forearmed.

LESSON 2

“Anticipate change even when things are going right.”Most people wait for something to go wrong before they think

of change. It is like going to the doctor for a check up only when you are seriously sick or thinking of maintaining your vehicle only when it breaks down. The biggest enemy of future success is past success. When you succeed, you feel that you must be doing something right for it to happen. But when the parameters for success change, doing the same things may or may not continue to lead to success. Guard against complacency all the time. Complacency makes you blind to the early signals from the environment that something is going wrong.

LESSON 3

“Always look at the opportunities that change represents.”Managing change has a lot to go with our own attitude towards

it. It is proverbial half-full or half empty glass approach. For every problem that change represents, there is an opportunity lurking in disguise somewhere. It is up to you to spot it before someone else does.

LESSON 4

“Do not allow routines to become chains.”For many of us the routine. We have got accustomed to obstructs

change. Routines represent our own zones of comfort. There is a sense of predictability about them. They have structured our time and even our thought in a certain way. While routines are useful, do not let them enslave you. Deliberately break out of them from time to time.

LESSON 5

“Realize that fear of the unknown is natural.”With change comes a feeling of insecurity. Many people believe

that brave people are not afflicted by this malady. The truth is different. Every one feels the fear of unknown. Courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to manage fear without getting paralyzed. Feel the fear, but move on regardless.

Page 16: Leadership - al-habeeb teachers' training college

20 Leadership Thought Provoking Speech 21♦ ♦

LESSON 6

“Keep renewing yourself.”This prepares you to anticipate change and be ready for it when

it comes. Constantly ask yourself what new skills and competencies will be needed. Begin working on them before it becomes necessary and you will have a natural advantage. The greatest benefit of your education lies not only in what you have learnt, but in working how to learn. Formal education is the beginning of the journey of learning. Yet I do meet youngsters who feel that they have already learnt all there is to learn. You have to constantly learn about people and how to interact effectively with them. In the world of tomorrow, only those individuals and organizations will succeed who have mastered the art of rapid and on-going learning.

LESSON 7

“Surround yourself with people who are open to change.”If you are always in the company of cynics, you will soon find

yourself becoming like them. A cynic knows all the reasons why something cannot be done. Instead, spend time with people who have a “can-do” approach. Choose your advisors and mentors correctly. Pessimism is contagious, but then so is enthusiasm. In fact, reasonable optimism can be an amazing force multiplier.

LESSON 8

“Play to win..!!”I have said this many times in the past. Playing to win is not the

same as cutting corners. When you play to win, you stretch yourself to your maximum and use all your potential. It also helps you to concentrate your energy on what you can influence instead of getting bogged down with the worry of what you cannot change. Do your best and leave the rest.

LESSON 9

“Respect yourself. The world will reward you on your successes.”Success requires no explanation and failure permits none. But you

need to respect yourself enough so that your self-confidence remains intact whether you succeed or fail. If you succeed 90 per cent of the time, you are doing fine. If you are succeeding all the time, you should

ask yourself if you are taking enough risks. If you do not take enough risks, you may also be losing out on many opportunities. Think through but take the plunge. If some things do go wrong, learn from them. I came across this interesting story some time ago:

Story

“One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and begin to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and

was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that fell on his back, the donkey was doing some thing amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and totted off ! Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick is too not to get bogged down by it. We can get out of the deepest wells by not stopping. And by never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up !”

LESSON 10

“Never change: your core values.”In spite of all the change around you, decide upon what you will

never change: your core values. Take your time to decide what they are but once you do, do not compromise on them for any reason. Integrity is one such value.

LESSON 11

“We must remember that succeeding in a changing world is beyond just surviving.”

It is our responsibility to create and contribute something to the world that has given us so much. We must remember that many have contributed to our success, including our parents and others from our

Page 17: Leadership - al-habeeb teachers' training college

23

society. All of us have a responsibility to utilize our potential for making our nation a better place for others, who may not be as well endowed as us, or as fortunate in having the opportunities that we have got. Let us do our bit, because doing one good deed can have multiple benefits not only for us but also for many others. Let me end my talk with a small story I came across some time back, which illustrates this very well.

Story

“This is a story of a poor Scottish farmer whose name was Fleming. One day, while trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby dog. He dropped his tools and ran to the dog. There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the boy from what could have been a slow and terrifying death. The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman’s sparse surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved. “I want to repay you“ said the nobleman. “ Yes,” the farmer replied proudly. “I’ll make you a deal. Let me take your son and give him a good education. If he’s anything like his father, he’ll grow to a man you can be proud of you.” And that he did. In time, Farmer Fleming’s son graduated from St.Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known through-out the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin. Years afterward, the Nobleman’s son was stricken with pneumonia. What saved him? Penicillin. This is not the end. The nobleman’s son also made a great contribution to society. For the nobleman was non other than Lord Randolph Churchill. and his son’s name was Winston Churchill. Let us use all our talent, competence and energy for creating peace and happiness for the nation.”

“Change is the Only thing that will Never change. So better adapt to it.”

“Change is Universal…Change is Permanent….Be ever willing to Change…..For, change alone leads you to success and happiness!!!”

“If one desires a change, one must be that change before that change can take place”

Golden Thoughts of Thirukkural (A Tamil Poet/Writer)

Tirukkural has written more than 5000 yrs ago. It’s one of the ancient science on Human behavior, which has not changed in-spite of modern education & technology ! . 1. If your child lies to you often, it is because you over-react too

harshly to their inappropriate behavior. 2. If your child is not taught to confide in you about their mistakes,

you’ve lost them. 3. If your child had poor self-esteem, it is because you advice them

more than you encourage them. 4. If your child does not stand up for themselves, it is because from

a young age you have disciplined them regularly in public. 5. If your child takes things that do not belong to them, it is because

when you buy them things, you don’t let them chose what they want.

6. If your child is cowardly, it is because you help them too quickly. 7. If your child does not respect other people’s feelings, it is because

instead of speaking to your child, you order and command them. 8. If your child is too quick to anger, it is because you give too

much attention to misbehavior and you give little attention to good behavior.

9. If your child is excessively jealous, it is because you only congratulate them when they successfully complete something and not when they improve at something even if they don’t successfully complete it.

10. If your child intentionally disturbs you, it is because you are not physically affectionate enough.

12. If your child is secretive, it is because they don’t trust that you won’t blow things out of proportion.

13. If your child talks back to you, it is because they watch you do it to others and think its normal behavior.

14. If your child doesn’t listen to you but listens to others, it is because you are too quick to make decisions.

15. If your child rebels it is because they know you care more about what others think than what is rightYou are the architect of your child, give him your TIME, when

he needs it most. 1. Put away your phone in their presence. 2. Pay attention to what they are saying. 3. Accept their opinions and point of view. 4. Engage in their conversations. 5. Look at them with respect. 6. Always praise them. 7. Share good news with them. 8. Speak well of their friends and loved ones to them. 9. Keep in remembrance the good things they did. 10. Choose your words carefully when speaking with them. 26. Call them by names they like. 27. Make them your priority above anything n everything...

9/11/2001 Worst attack on America soil.Effect of Black Thursday / American economy was worst hit. To come over this one of the solution found those days was hire purchase. This was people could purchase with a commitment to pay in longer duration, EMI’s were designed, where people were able to full their needs and could buy what they wanted or needed.

This need gave opportunity to industry to manufacture, manufacturing gave rise to the raw material demand, requirement of manpower, requirement of all the industrial needs, electricity, water, transport, logistics, activities for the production people, marketing people, management people so and so, These economic activities gave a kick start to the economy. Banks extended advances to the industry. This was the belief of John Maynard Keynes, “If people were spending, then people had to be employed to make things. They get paid, spent their money and so the cycle continued”.

Do you know Lee Iacocca who was vice President at Ford and was forced to leave, saved Chrysler Corporation by winning support from Congress and the American people for the biggest corporation bailout in history Here’s how he explained his success:

I’ve seen a lot of guys who are smarter than I am and a lot who know more about cars. And yet I’ve lost them in the smoke. Why? Because I’m tough? No…. You’ve got to know how to talk to them, plain and simple.

The “plain and simple” talk to which he referred was using words to express, not impress. How do you know if a word is pompous? If you wouldn’t use it at a cock:tail party, chances are it’s pompous. Using buzzwords, bytes, and bits with an audience that may not be as tech savvy as you will also keep you from breaking through.

“My high school speech teacher cautioned our class that talks can be fatal if they aren’t plain and simple”. His proof? President William Henry Harrison stood outside in the rain for nearly two hours delivering his inaugural address. He died a month later from pneumonia. This is the commitment of the person in his statement.

Indian Boy Who Invented Email 95♦

94

Chapter-9

Indian Boy Who Invented Email

Even the best brains in computer and software engineering may not be able to answer if you ask them who invented email. This was illustrated on Sunday when this writer checked the same with Prof. Achuthsankar S. Nair, Director, State Inter-University Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics, Government of Kerala and Dr. Iyemperumal, Executive Director, Tamil Nadu State Science and Technology Centre.

Both of them expressed their helplessness even though both of them handle hundreds of email messages per day.

It is a 14-year-old boy from India and that, too, with roots in Tamil Nadu who invented email as well as the five-letter word which has become synonymous with communication.

V A Shiva Ayyadurai, hardly out of school in New Jersey, ushered in the paperless era into this world. It was in response to a challenge thrown at him by Dr. Leslie P Michelson, Director, High Performance Computing Lab, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), in Newark, New Jersey, which made little Shiva create the world’s first email system in November 1978.

“The UMDNJ was a big campus connected by a wide area computer network. The computer was in its initial stages of being used in the office environment. Dr. Michelson wanted me to create an electronic version of the interoffice mail system so that the entire staff of doctors secretaries, students and staff could communicate faster.

At that time, secretaries and staff were performing drafting, typing, copying, hand delivering of the entire paper-based mail. By observing the interoffice mail system, I created a parts list: Inbox, Outbox, Memo,

Folders, Address Book, Attachments, and then created a computer programme of nearly 50,000 lines of computer code which replicated this entire system.

I called my innovation ‘email,’ a term that had never been used before. The world’s first email I sent was to Dr. Michelson in November 1978,” Dr. Ayyadurai told The Pioneer on Sunday. Dr. Ayyadurai developed email as a software program me.

“Software itself was a new concept then. In 1978, it was not even covered under the Intellectual Property Rights. The US Copyright Law of 1976 was amended, however, in 1980, to allow for the protection of software.

In 1982, I was awarded the first US Copyright for ‘Email,’ recognizing me as the inventor of email by the US Government,” said Dr. Ayyadurai, who holds four different Post Graduate degrees including a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“What you see in any email system today, the Inbox, Outbox, Address Book, the Memo (From, To, Date, Subject, Body, CC and BCC), Attachments, etc are based on my observations to replicate the interoffice mail system.

In November 1978, as a 14-year-old school boy, I addressed the doctors of the University on what I invented and demonstrated the use of the entire system,” reminiscences Dr. Ayyadurai, son of Vellayappa Ayyadurai, a chemical engineer hailing from Rajapalayam in Tamil Nadu and Meenakshi, a mathematics teacher who went on to become the head of the elite Don Bosco Public School in Mumbai.

The Ayyadurais migrated to the USA in 1970 in search of greater challenges so that little Shiva could get better education and exposure. He did not let his parents down.

By the age of 13 he had mastered all known computer programming languages in vogue and went on to create email, which revolutionized the world of communication.

Dr Ayyadurai has come out with a book ‘The Email Revolution: Unleashing The Power of Connect’ which has foreword by Dr. Leslie Michelson and an introduction by none other than Prof. Noam Chomsky. He is in India as part of his mission to identify more “Shivas” who have much better innovations to offer to the world.

“Young people of all colors, hungry to make this world a better place, are going to innovate things we’ve never imagined. We have to provide more global images to young people. In India, for example, with icons, beyond just white skinned and white haired, bearded scientists,” said Dr Ayyadurai.

And how many of us is aware of the fact that radio was invented by Prof. Jagdish Chandra Bose! It was his failure to get it patented that cos Dr. Bose the title.

Marconi, who had seen Dr. Bose’ public demonstration of the radio, had approached him with an irresistible offer to market the same. But, Dr. Bose wanted the radio to be used for the welfare of the humanity.

The night he held the public demonstration, his equipment was robbed from his hotel room. The rest is history,” Prof Ranjit Nair, leading physicist, had told this writer.

So, today we all think Marconi, an Italian, invented Radio.

How to Live & Die, Khushwant Singh (96) 99♦

98

Chapter-11

How to Live & Die, Khushwant Singh (96)

I’ve often thought about what it is that makes people happy—what one has to do in order to achieve happiness.

First and foremost is good health. If you do not enjoy good health, you can never be happy. Any ailment, however trivial, will deduct something from your happiness.

Second, a healthy bank balance. It need not run into crores, but it should be enough to provide for comforts, and there should be something spare for recreation— eating out, going to the movies, travel and holidays in the hills or by the sea. Shortage of money can be demoralizing Living on credit or borrowing is demeaning and lowers one in one’s own eyes.

Third, your own home. Rented places can never give you the comfort or security of a home that is yours for keeps. If it has garden space, all the better. Plant your own trees and flowers, see them grow and blossom, and cultivate a sense of kinship with them.

Fourth, an understanding companion, be it your spouse or a friend. If you have too many misunderstandings, it robs you of your peace of mind. It is better to be divorced than to be quarrelling all the time.

Fifth, stop envying those who have done better than you in life—risen higher, made more money, or earned more fame. Envy can be corroding; avoid comparing yourself with others.

Sixth, do not allow people to descend on you for gup-shup. By the time you get rid of them, you will feel exhausted and poisoned by their gossip-mongering.

Seventh, cultivate a hobby or two that will fulfill you—gardening, reading, writing, painting, playing or listening to music. Going to clubs

o parties to get free drinks, or to meet celebrities, is a criminal waste of time. It’s important to concentrate on something that keeps you occupied meaningfully.

Eighth every morning and evening devote 15 minutes to introspection. In the mornings, 10 minutes should be spent in keeping the mind absolutely still, and five listing the things you have to do that day. In the evenings, five minutes should be set aside to keep the mind still an. 10 to go over the tasks you had intended to do.

Ninth, don’t lose your temper. Try not to be short-tempered, or vengeful. Even when a friend has been rude, just move on.

Above all, when the time comes to go, one should go like a man without any regret or grievance against anyone. Iqbal said it beautifully in couplet in Persian: “You ask me about the signs of a man of faith? When death comes to him, he has a smile on his lips.

I don’t fear death. What I dread is the day I go blind or am incapacitated because of old age—that’s what I fear—I’d rather die than live in that condition. I’m a burden enough on my daughter Mala and don’t want to be an extra burden on her.

All that I hope for is that when death comes to me, it comes swiftly, without much pain, like fading away in sound.. Till then I’ll keep working and living each day as it comes.

- Khushwant Singh (96) in 2011

‘Hawker to hacker - cracker, Haryana boy’s tech dreams soar highMicrosoft offers Virender Raika, son of a labourer, Rs 4.85-crore

annual package for his extraordinary anti-hacking skills

Hina Rohtaki Tribune News Service, Panchkula, May 13.

He is a golden boy who never had a silver spoon in his mouth. He had dreams, but no wings. Yet he flies high.

Twenty - one - years - old Virender Raika, who worked as a hawker to fund his studies, has developed an extraordinary anti hacking software which has earned him a plum job at Microsoft.

The whoppoing Rs 4.85 crore annual package offered by the software giant comes as an add-on for a lad who couldn’t goto the IIT — despite getting through the entrance — as he had no money.

Born in Prhowa village in Kurukshetra, Virender says the going was always tough for him. “After my father who works as a labourer fell sick, I had to take up the job of a hawker. I soon realised that the money won’t suffice. So, I started giving Physics tuitions,” says the boy who was in Panchkula to interact with students.

A class X topper, Virender did part-time jobs to fund his Class 12 education. He qualified a scholarship entrance to study further and even got through the IIT, but couldn’t pursue it due to lack of funds.

Quiz him on his anti-hacking project and his eyes light up. “The idea to develop an anti-hacking system struck me while I was watching a movie. I saw a girl hacking into a system and then I thought why not

develop a system that has a foolproof security. There are ways to hack into a system but no permanent way to secure it. So by working on various cyber theories, I made an anti-hacking system,” says the tech-wizard.

Virender gave a demo of his project through video-conferencing to a group of expert hackers at Microsoft’s office in Hyderabad. The Chief Financial officer of the Microsoft, Peter Klein, who was keenly observing the demo online, was so impressed by Virender’s skills that he offered him a job straightaway. The Haryana boy, who is pursing his BTech from IGNOU, has been told to join in November.

On his future plans, Virender says he wants to open his own company in India. “I want to do something for my country. We are so dependent US for technology I want to turn the tide,” he says. Virender’s father Gyan Chand and nother Shinder still don’t know what exactly their son has developed. “We both are illiterate. We just know that Virender has got a job 4.5 crore and companies from China and Japan are persuing him,” says Gyan Chand.

Virender Raika is ‘Most wanted’ by Delhi copsThe Delhi police depend on Virender’s technical assistance in almost

every cyber crime case.

Virender Raika studied in Candle light. In a one-room house, devoid of basic amenities and

practically no power.

ANOTHER CASE STUDY

He is Srikanth Bolla, a 24 year old blind entrepreneur from Hyderabad. When he was born, his parents, who were earning Rs 20,000 a year, were advised to get rid of him, but somehow he survived.

Despite getting 90% in class 10th, he was not allowed to chose Science stream for 12th; he sued the State Govt., fought for 6 months, and won the case. He scored 98% with Science in 12th.

When NTs and NITs didn’t give him hall ticket for writing competitive exams, he applied overseas, and got selected 4 of the best colleges ever created on Earth: MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon. He chose Massachusett Institute of Technology, received a scholarship, and was MIT’s first International blind student.

After returning from US in 2012, he launched Bollant Industries, where 60% of employees are poor, physically challenged. This 450 employees company is now worth Rs 50 crore, and recently, Ratan Tata invested in his venture

As per him, “I was made blind by the perception of people..” When the world said to him that you can’t do anything Bolla said, “But I look up at the world and say I can do anything.”

SRINIVASA AIYANGAR RAMANUJAN

A great Mathematician, He was a fellow of Royal Society of London in 1918. He died at the age of 32 yrs months. He was born on 22nd December 1887 and died on 26th April 1820. Born in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, Indi His father in Kumbakonam as a clerk in cloth merchant’s shop. In 1889 he contracted smallpox. He passed Mathmatics, but failed in all other subjects, hence declared failed and could not get admission in Madras Universit He used to solve the mathematics Problems and publish them in Journal of Indian Mathematical Society, develope elliptic modular equations in 1910. He had gained recognition for his work and was well known in Madras area as Mathematical Genius. On March 1, 1912, he joined as clerk at Madras Port Trust.

Ramanujan independently discovered results of Gauss, Kummer and other on hyper geometric series. Ramanujan own work on partial sums and products of hyper geometric series have led to major developmt.it in the topic. H most famous work was on the number p(n) of partitions of an integer n into summands, Mac Mahon had produce tables of the value of p(n) for small numbers n and Ramanujan some of the works like on elliptic functions ar other were only proved after his death.

Government of India issued a Postal Stamp to celebrate the 75th anniversary of his birth.

On the basis of his Birthdate he had developed an Magical Square each line digits are as follows:

22-12-18-87,88- 17-09-25,10-24-89 - 16,19-86-23-11

First line represents his day of birth December 22,1887. If we add any four blocks numbers the total will add to 139. It may b four corners, any row or any column, cross wise or only four central blocks. This is known as magical Square of Ramanujan.

INDIAN STUDENT AT USA

It was the first day of a school in USA and a new Indian student named Chandrasekhar Subramanian entered the fourth grade.

The teacher said, “Let’s begin by reviewing some American History. Who said ‘Give me Liberty, or give me Death’?”

She saw a sea of blank faces except for Chandrasekhar, who had his hand up: ‘Patrick Henry, 1775,’ he said.

‘Very good! Who said ‘Government of the People, by the People, for the People, shall not perish from the Earth?”

Again, no response except from Chandrasekhar. ‘Abraham Lincoln, 1863’ said Chandrasekhar.

The teacher snapped at the class, ‘Class, you should be ashamed. Chandrasekhar, who is new to our country, knows more about our history than you do.’

She heard a loud whisper: ‘F______ the Indians’‘Who said that?’ she demanded. Chandrasekhar put his hand up.

‘General Custer, 1862.’

At that point, a student in the back said, ‘I’m gonna puke.’The teacher glares around and asks ‘All right! Now, who said that?’

Again, Chandrasekhar says, ‘George Bush to the Japanese Prime Minister, 1991.’

Now furious, another student yells, ‘Oh yeah? Suck this!’Chandrasekhar jumps out of his chair waving his hand and shouts

to the teacher, ‘Bill Clinton, to Monica Lewinsky, 1997.’Now with almost mob hysteria someone said ‘You little shit. If

you say anything else, I’ll kill you.’ Chandrasekhar frantically yells at the top of his voice, ‘Michael Jackson to the child witnesses testifying against him, 2004.’

The teacher fainted. And as the class gathered around the teacher on the floor, someone said, ‘Oh shit, we’re screwed!’ And Chandrasekhar said quietly, ‘I think it was Lehmann Brothers, November 4th, 2008’.

Chapter-13

Inventions Contribution to the Economy and the Change in Quality of Life, World Over

INNOVATION OF CAR

Manufacturing of car, we remember the contribution of Henry Ford who introduced the production line in manufacturing sector that changed the normal working, and helped in increasing the production, high volume in production, helped industry to bring down the prices (T Model) was sold for $1200/= in 1909 and the same was sold for $295/= in 1928. Ford sold 17 million cars in 19 years that means 894736 a year, 2451 a day. This much sale changed the life style, as he priced the car at an affordable price, common individual bought the car, that developed the car culture in US, unemployment reduced to 5 – 7% in US, It brought a big flip to the entire economy during that period. The demand for the goods and services increased increase in production in all sextors, a total flip to the entire production sector including the car industry. The increase in production led to the increase in economy. Single car production increased the demand in the following manner:- A. Demand for petrol increased. B. Demand for good roads, was there for which lot of activities at the

state as well as at National level increased. People started driving and to go far of places by car only. While going for long drives, there was the need for hotels / inns enroot, need for restaurants’ and hotels increased which generated lot of economic activities in these fields.

C. Demand for steel increased as Car industry consumed 20% of steel.

D. Demand for Rubber production increased car industry itself consumed 80%,

E. 75% of Plate glass went to car industry.F. 65% of leather production went to car industry

G. Car garages came up all around as people used the cars the maintaince of those became a big business.

H. Demand for car spares and other as series increased. Such as car batteries, car radio’s etc etc.In this manner there were lot of economic activities which got

generated and all these activities generated job opportunities for the people. With more purchasing power with individual, led to more demand, more production.

More and more people in the job, prosperity flourished. Whole economy took a new shape, and this was only due to the innovation,

INNOVATION OF AIRCRAFT

Invention of Aircraft by Wilbur and Orville Write on Dec 10, 1903 their wisdom was questioned, but on Dec 16, 1903 they proved Aircraft can fly made it possible, that was the start of this invention and today it provides millions of jobs and billions of trade every day worldwide. You can imagine what a change it has brought into world economy in terms of direct employment and indirect employment. The concept of travel business totally changed: (a) A Infrastructure in terms of airport buildings. (b) Airport runways, (c) People into the travel business, like travel agents, Airlines Offices,

Airlines industry, Airlines logistics, (d) Airlines catering services, Hotels all around the country where

people could go and stay overnight. (e) Possibilities of attending business meetings at far off places. (f) Airlines contribution in the war industry, the difference could be

seen in the first world war and second world war, during the second world was aircrafts were used to target the enemy and even for the movement of the troops. Investment in the infrastructure, aircraft industry, Transport, Hotel industry and facilitated commercial world to make things possible across the globe, War industry has

Page 60: Leadership - al-habeeb teachers' training college

totally changed and all this economic growth and reshaping of the industry is only due to the innovation of the aircraft. You can today commit for any meeting or things to reach only based on the availability of the airlines services. Even the movement of mail was by the airlines, that is how we could expect the courier services to operate, otherwise who will use the courier if the delivery is not quick and immediate. Courier business itself is of hundreds of billions of dollars.Airlines is one of the back bone of the modern economy and its

contribution, is very difficult to count, think life without the airlines?

INNOVATION OF STEAM POWER”

This is another innovation which revolutionized the state of industry. The production depended on the use of water power. In 1800 there 4000 miles of canals were built in Great Brittan, as this was the only way to have the power by using the water to generate the energy. There were many shortcoming by depending on the water power, like in draught as the water level will go down the industry would not get required amount of water to generate the water power. In winter when rivers would freeze the situation would be forcibly the same. Location of the industry had to be by the side of the river only, with the result you could not choose the location of the industry, because the best for the industry is to be closer to the raw material or the market. But in this situation the entrepreneur could not do anything. Even the water power had limitations for using the heavy equipment and the production capacity was limited.

But with the invention of the steam power by Jams Watt the situation changed. People could setup the industry anywhere, where they felt it was most economical and cost effective. The location of the industry was selected nearer to the availability of the raw material, to make the things cost effective. The capacity of production got increased by installing bigger machines to have higher production, thus higher production helped in reducing the cost of the finished material and larger factories could be set up to have higher output out of the same infrastructure.

Arkwright, revolutionized the industry, he was born in 1732, was thirteenth child of a tailor, grew up in a family that was constantly on the brink of poverty, but latter on he was one of the five richest person

in Britain. He was into the spinning frame and used the power of gears for power transmission. He revolutionized the industry and made best use of the technology at that time. He made a position for himself in the industry. With the growth of industrial production the economy had a big advantage. Arkwright was highly innovative and would keep on looking for the innovative or the revolutionary changes those could be bought into the system.

You can imagine a person living in the extreme poverty to become one of the fifth richest person in Britain, this all was possible due to the application of innovation. Now imagine with this multifold progress how much industry would have progressed and how many would have been involved in this all must a better future for them selves, with cash in hand you are increasing the buying power and that has ripple effect on the economy.

James Watt – he watched the lit of a kettle rise and fall, that made him to think of the possibility of the innovation. Innovation of the Steam Power, this replaced the water power and now the industry could be established any where nearer to the raw material. Earlier it was only the water power and industry was put up nearer to the availability of water, to use the water power. With introduction of the Steam Power mass production was possible and natural clematises would not affect the production. Because of ease in production and mechanization, prices came down, demand increased, increase in demand more and more commercial activities increased. This all gave a boost to the economy.

George Stephenson – he invented the railways - With the introduction of Railway things changed. This was another great invention, the first train he made was named as ROCKET, this would reach a speed of 24 miles an hour at that time. Watching the ease and success of this, rail were laid all over not only in Britain but all over the Globe and this became a great success for ever one and people found the advantage of travelling by train, a great cost effective and could travel long distances in short time. Travelling by train became popular.

It was not only travel, think of movement of raw material, think of the movement of workforce to the work place. Industry could be any where, raw material or the manpower could be moved to increase the commercial activities. This was possible with the introduction of the railways. It proved a boom. It became a big trade.

Page 61: Leadership - al-habeeb teachers' training college

110 Leadership Inventions Contribution to the Economy and the Change in Quality of Life, World Over 111♦ ♦

It contributed to the economy by making it possible to move the raw material to the production units or the manpower to the production unit, generating the employment opportunity. Movement of finished goods to the market at a competitive price, Today we see how much our economy is interdependent on the railways, and how many commercial activities are interdependent on the railways. This also brought a dramatic change in our economy and made it possible what we are today, movement of people, raw material to the industry or the finished goods to the market, Petrol Fuel, army name any you will find how railways has contributed in every field thus brought a big change in our economy, Today there are bullet trains in the industry.

ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY

Our whole entertainment industry depends on the invention of light by Thomas A Edison, sound by Chev G Marconi and Motion by SFB Morse. It is these three inventions these together gave birth to the possibility of using them into entertainment industry. If we annualize the contribution of this industry worldwide billions of dollars get generated into the revenue, take case of Hollywood and Bollywood. The recent move “DANGAL” released has generated about Rs.300 crores in about 3 – 4 weeks. Immagine how many people are engaged right from the concept of this project (Move) and now how many are engaged in its process of reaching upto the common man. How much goes into advertising of these to reach to the viewers. All this is possible because of the invention of these three (Light, Sound & motion). Can you think what would have been life without these. We would not have been seeing the movies in the theater nor on the television. Can we imagine the number of people involved in these professions and how much do they contribute to the industry, to the engagement of the people, growth of infrastructure for directly or indirectly used by the industry. How much do they contribute to the exchequer in terms of taxes as entertainment tax, or the tax over the earnings of individuals.

MEDICAL SCIENCE

Invention’s contribution in today’s medical science, how many industries are engaged in the R & D of Medicines and manufacturing of medicines. How much specialization has gone in to the medical

industry it Is only because of the high tech machines and technology has entered into this industry and on humanitarian angle is doing a lot of good job to help the sick and needy to come out of the pain.

Invention of simple X-Ray, ultrasound, Scanner, MRI, or the advanced labs for conducting various tests have grown so much that millions of people are engaged with these professions.

Advancement in this filed is only possible because of advancement in the medical science.

A Graham Bell – Telephone has been invented by him and In the modern times, he made communication possible, This invention has dynamically changed the life style, every one irrespective of place and location can be contacted. It has totally changed the present day living. Now with the introduction of mobile phones the market has further expanded and employment opportunities multiplied. There are various avenues for the people to get involved in this industry, people doing R & D, manufacturing, marketing, providing connectivity, advertising, providing services to their customers, and so on many more added advantages, people engaged in billing, engaged in retail outlets, all these are generating the economy and boosting the job opportunities,

There are countless opportunities created by this industry and all due to innovation of telephone.

Mobile Phones / Cell Phones have revolutionized the concept of telephone. Internet would have been impossible without the communication infrastructure.

COMPUTER

In the modern times the invention of computers & internet, e-mail, web, on the line marketing on like banking, on line ticketing, booking for flight or for rail, all can be done over the internet, well these all are based on technology for which number less people have worked to develop these. Even today there are millions of people who are engaged in ensuring that customers use these services on line.

Possibility of off shore working or call centers is possible over the internet. What a change these brought in the host country, how many jobs could be generated over these, without moving men or money out of the country. All these people work in the host country and people engaged here are paid, by the overseas country, this way we aer able to Globalize the resources.

Page 62: Leadership - al-habeeb teachers' training college

112 Leadership Inventions Contribution to the Economy and the Change in Quality of Life, World Over 113♦ ♦

It is this innovation that made Global Village possible. There has been a big contribution of infrastructure industry to

provide the facilities for the commercial activities, The infrastructure came in terms of multistory buildings and this could only be possible due to contribution of few inventions.

ELEVATOR

Innovation of Elevator. Designed in 1903 and that was with a counter weight.

Elevators first time made by Elisha Otis in 1853,

START OF MULTISTORY BUILDINGS

In 1904 Ritz Hotel was constructed with lights, lights and telephone – this was considered state of art luxury

The Home Insurance Building In Chicago was the first “Skyscraper.” The construction of skyscrapers was possible because of steel, innovation of steel made it possible to construct the multistory buildings. Chicago building was erected in 1885 with 12 floors. Light bulb was invented in 1879, Telephone invented by Graham Bell in 1876, Flush Toilets developed on comprehensive sewer system in 1888 design in Chicago. Now imagine without these to work in “Skyscraper” would not have been possible. Who would climb to reach all the floors? Without the help of elevator. “Skyscrapers,” would ot have been possible if we not all these facilities.

Just to share with all the readers I may list down few tallest buildings of the world.

Empire State Building, New York completed in 1931, height 1350 ft / 381 mts

Ostanking Tower, Moscow completed in 1967, height 1,772 ft / 540 mts.

C N Tower, Toronto, completed in 1975, height 1,815 ft / 553 mts.Makkah Royal Clock Tower Hotel, Mecca completed in 2012,

height 1,972 ft / 601 mts.Shanghai Tower, Shanghai, completed in 2015, height 2,073 ft,

/ 632 mts.Signature Tower, Jakarta, completion 2020, height 2,093 ft / 638 mts.Burj Khalifa, Dubai, Completed in 2010, height 2,717 ft / 828 mts.

Kingdom Tower, Jeddah, completion in 2018, height 3,281 ft / 1,000 mts.

With the growing need of land and land being limited there is only sky what is free to raise the height. The futuristic structure provides a vision of how growing urban populations worldwide might someday live.

Just to share the normal height of the clouds is 600mts and now the buildings over 600 mts that is few floors may be above the clouds. in case of 1000 mts height 400 mts of the building will be above the clouds.

Now imagine with the construction of the more and more flats there will be requirements of all the house furnishing and residential Lighting was a revelation by itself. With the invent of power, many white goods were invented, like Room Heaters in 1912, Water Heaters in 1930, Electric Bed warmer in 1949, Fridge in 1921, Food Mixers in 1918, Pop up Pride toaster in 1951, Vacuum Cleaner in 1901, Washing Machine 1906, white goods requirement, which generates the demand of all these requirements and generates industrial activities, leads to more and more employment.

New York Skyscraper boom got created after the 1st world war. In 1930 team added 10 stories of a building in 10 days time that was the need and the speed to meet need.

Today There are various building at middle east which have more than 600 mts and even 1000 mts. Now is it possible to operate these heights if we do not have means to access freely these heights.

INNOVATION OF POWER AND LIGHT

Revolution to the life style

MICHAEL FARADAY 1791 – 1867

When we closely peep into the life of Michael Faraday we get inspired, what is possible for a man to achieve

When one has the will and he turns that into commitment. Michael Faraday, comes from a very poor family had no proper schooling, became one of the greatest scientists in history. His achievement was remarkable in at time when science was the subject of privileged families.

EDUCATION AND EARLY LIFE - Michael Faraday was born on September 22, 1791 in London, England. He was the third child of James and Mararet Faraday. His father was a blacksmith who had poor

health. Before marriage, his mother had been a servant. The family lived in a degree of poverty. Michael Faraday, attended a local school until he was 13 where he received a basic education. To earn money for the family he started working as a delivery boy for a bookshop. He worked hard and impressed his employer. After a year, he was promoted to become an apprentice bookbinder.

BOOKBINDING AND DISCOVERING SCIENCE - Michael Faraday was eager to learn more about the world, he did not restrict himself to binding the shop’s book. After working hard each day, he spent his free time reading the books he had bound. Gradually he found he was reading more and more about science. Two books in particular captivated him;

The encyclopedia Britannica – his source for electrical knowledge and much more and the 600 page Conversations on Chemistry by Jane Marker – his source for chemistry knowledge.

Faraday also worked as personal assistant to Sir Humphrey Davy where he was personal servant to Davy and Davy’s wife, which he did not enjoy. But he did attend.

MICHAEL FARADAY’S CAREER AT THE ROYAL INSTITUTION – Faraday began work at the Royal institution of Great Britain at the age of 21 on March 1, 1813. He was given a room in the Royal institution’s attic to live in.

Faraday when he joined his job was to prepare apparatus, but he ended up as a Professor of chemistry.

In 1825, aged 33, he became Fullerene Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institution of Great Britain. He held this position for the rest of his life. In 1848, aged 54 and again in 1858 he was offered the Presidency of the Royal Society, but he turned it down.

MICHAEL FARADAY’S SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS AND DISCOVERIES; - It would be easy fill a book with details of all of Faraday’s discoveries – in both chemistry and Physics. It is not an accident that Albert Einstein used to keep photo of three scientists inhisoffice:IsaacNewton,JamesClerkMaxwellandMichaelFaraday.

Leader (CEO) is the Dealer of Hopes…… 123♦

Chapter-14

Leader (CEO) is the Dealer of Hopes……

The Book of Proverbs says that, ” Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

Every one at the organization looks forward to their future. They join a progressive organization with a hope to make brilliant carrier. But the future of the corporation lies in the hands of the management and CEO. Growth of the organization is the skill of its CEO / Leader. Organization’s management / Board can appoint a CEO But the organization in real terms need a true Leader to lead, its people to achieve the desired results. It is an individual who takes the top decision in the interest of the organization.

A leader must take quick decisions in the interest of the organization, with each decision he understands, the responsibility of taking the decision, but in that position one has to take the decision in the interest of the organization. Ross Perot once said,” If you see a snake just kill it – don’t form a committee on snake.” Another such an incident happened on 10 August 1981, when a Concorde aircraft taking off from John F. Kennedy airport burst a tyre. The captain took the decision to abandon the flight in a second. This aircraft had already reached the speed of 180 miles per hour he would have taken off in one further second. The broken tire had badly damaged the undercarriage. Pilot decided to abandon the flight, the decision he took in a fraction of a second. All the passengers presented captain Brister with a petition thanking him for saving their lives. “We practice such an emergency stop on the Concorde simulator every six months he explained afterwards” Quickness of decision is essential for success. Concorde flight was known for its speed, it would fly faster than the sound, very high speed, now flying of this high speed aircraft has been stopped, to avoid such high risk.

It is seen in practice most of the corporate form committee to take decisions. When do you form a committee, it is when you do not want to carry decision because with the decision you are responsible for the consequences, to be away from the consequences, you form a committee and shift the responsibility to the committee. When you take a decision some time it might be wrong, that fare should not stop you from taking the decision. No one is always right, It is said, “ if you are always right the right place for you is the Wall Street”, there have been many right decision those have turned the world overnight.

When the Piper Alpa oil rig exploded, number of people jumped 150 ft into flame red stormy sea, because staying where they were was more dangerous than jumping in to the sea, so a quick action was taken. The jumping had danger but had chances of survivor. They took the decision instantaneously and executed the action, as it was the best in that situation.

Most of the men from defense services are considered having better leadership qualities, they are used to take instantaneous decisions on spot. With their decisions they own the responsibility too.

While performing your job as a leader you are developing people to be leaders. While delegating it will spare the Leader / CEO to think on the other vital issues related to the organization. The top man has to think in terms of heading the unit rather than just managing the unit. Has to think how to take the unit to the next stage.

Leader has Various important and statutory function for the unit, right from ensuring free flow of raw material, to enchasing of the finished material and converting that into cash. Inventory management, recruitment of desired people assessing the requirement. Man management, logistics, statuary obligations, like ESI, PF, Labour laws, compliance of corporate laws, Income tax rules, employees welfare, distribution of wages / salaries, Sales & Marketing etc etc, of course there will be different dep’t. heads, but still the responsibility lies with the top man to see all work is managed within their time slot. It is important to build all round skills among the people.

Another important responsibility of the CEO or the head of the organization is to spot the strengths of individual and plan their best utilization. Utilization will be linked to his growth plan, which will lead to the growth of the organization. There is a limit for the pay hike, that the pay of the individual can be enhanced if the work profile remain the

Page 68: Leadership - al-habeeb teachers' training college

124 Leadership Leader (CEO) is the Dealer of Hopes…… 125♦ ♦

same. But when we move up the individual on an promotion, his work profile and position changes, there his position automatically command higher remuneration as he holds higher responsibility. That will work as a win-win situation for both, The individuals use there strengths and organization gets a known person to handle the responsibility. This act sets a trend of promoting the performers, that will motivate the rest to perform better and better.

Trust the individuals use their strengths that will not only benefit the organization but will benefit the people too to build their confidence to handle beyond what they are handling day to day. Initially there might be some mistakes, some resistance but always remember to take the onus of any one’s mistake is the roll of CEO / Leader to prove his leadership. Jim Collins writes, “a good leader takes a little more than his / her share of the blame and little less his / her share of the credit.”

BillGateshassaid,“Aswelookaheadintothenextcentury,Leaders will be those who empower others.”

And the last not the least, leaders core values are building factors for the organization his clarity on the values, to develop the organizational culture in the organization (not individual). Must treat others with dignity and respect.

“The secret of SONY Corporation is simply the way they treat their employees”, The SONY company could make profits only on his work, talent, creativity and drive.. Our values are the glue that holds employees to the organization, and values are exhibited in our dealings. Do not underestimate any employee at any level within the organization, All are important In their respective roll, and we need each and every one to achieve our objective.

“There is nothing so unequal as the equal treatment of unequal’s.” Keeping this in mind we have to ensure we take care of the staff who are below us and look forward on us for their future.

It very important to keep interest of the customers, It is said,” if the going is easy you are going down the hill”

What ever we are sending to the market it is sold and life is smooth. That should not end there itself. It should give us a opening to take care of the system and we should look for, if we can improve upon the quality in the same price, or reduce the price to give a benefit to our customers of our being in the business as leaders. This will ensure

it will help us to retain our position in the market, otherwise some competitor will enter into the market and might creep in.

There is a live example of Henry Ford, manufacturer of FORD motor Car. When he started the manufacture of the T model car in 1908 it was sold for $825/= Between 1908 and 1927 he sold 17 million T model cars. In mid 1920s the price of the new T Model had fallen to $275/= This was a recipe with which other motor car companies could not compare. T Models could now be assembled from stock of finished parts in a hour and a half. H Ford introduced the assembly line production and others latter on followed the assembly line, Shoemaker Tomas Bat’a was so impressed that he introduced this in his own factory.

That is the real roll of a leader. During his time he was way ahead. In any commercial establishment a leader must keep in mind the

interest of customers. It is our customers who keep us together, if customers turn their face, an organization how big it may be will extinct.

What happened to Ambassador, Fait, Weston TV, Standard TV, Alwen Fridge, HMT Watches, Rajdoot Motor Cycle and many more can be added to the list. During the eighties 46% of the top 500 companies disappeared because they failed to deliver customers expectation. There were alternate companies who filled the gap and became market leaders. As is said above, “If the going seems easy, you are going down the hill.” Here in India government controlled policies in such a way were controlled that is why these existing industries never thought of upgrading, for them going was smooth as there was no alternative product. For four (4) wheelers it was only Ambassador or Fiat, In case of Airlines it was only Indian Airlines or Air India, no option. For Highways there was no alternative, now we have many players to offer us these services a part from Govt controlled companies who are handling these tasks. Success should not be taken for granted. One must work for to be a leader in their field, and after that work for retaining that lead. Be innovative and progressive. Take the case of NIRMA – washing powder entered into the market and gave a tough time to a Multinational “Hindustan Levers”, NIRMA came as alternative.

One’s business card is of no value if he cannot add value to the clients. Customers will always remember one who has been a solution manager.

In case of Henry Ford even today, when it is more than 70 years of his death he is still remembered and respected. He introduced CAR

Page 69: Leadership - al-habeeb teachers' training college

126 Leadership Leader (CEO) is the Dealer of Hopes…… 127♦ ♦

Culture in America. Take the case of Alfred Nobel, he established the “NOBEL Prize Trust”. Eisek-Nutom, Words Worth, they live beyond the geographical boundaries and are international asset. All over the world their contribution is remembered and appreciated.

A leader must think for both sides, his team and his customers. He delivers to his customers through his team. Here lies the art of his leadership to keep both in top performance. How he interacts with the team and keeps customers in mind. He must share the importance of customers to each and every one and infuse the message of delivering the customer’s satisfaction to them. That is the prime goal of any organization.

It has been seen most of the corporate holding regular meetings with the respective staff to discuss the attrition, how many hold meetings with the staff to review the “Lost Customers”. To find the reason to improve situation, it must be taken very seriously, it is our customers who keep us in the business and we earn out of them.

I would suggest this subject of Lost Customers should be handled by one of the senior responsible executive to analyze and discuss the “Lost Customers”. Organizations must regularly conduct exit interview of lost customers. In accruing a customer there is lot of investment, in terms of marketing, advertisement and educating customers about the company its product its features all this costs the organization. How the markets get developed, I remember when the cooking gas in early 60’s was introduced people had to be convinced to use it. But in 90’s people are ready to buy the same at a premium. The same is the story of pressure cooker, and many other daily need appliance. When the tea was introduced in India, tea was distributed free so that people get used to its taste and get used to it. Today people go to the market and willingly buy tea. Companies during those times not only sold the product but developed the market, take example of car concept and market got developed, The main players was City Bank who provided easy loan to buy the automobiles and it was, mostly Maruti that got sold. Latter on many companies jumped into the commercial activities they had not to bear the initial market development price. So the going was easy for them and they could afford a lower price.

A proper analysis on the “Lost Customers” could ensure the attrition of the customers, and the reason of attrition that will help the company to take the corrective steps if not all but few corrections can be carried

out. If an industry is able to retain and widen its customers base they will be able to give benefit of mass production to their clients. Higher volume will take care of profitability as well as price benefit to clients.

A live Case Study will give you how it works. India Today in 1999 – 2000 came up with an offer “Pay Rs2,500/= and get India Today for 10 years and after 10 years they would refund Rs2,500/=” This was a attractive offer, I opted for this and got India Today for 10 yrs and after that they sent “India Today for 5 yrs will cost Rs.4,900/= for 5 years” I wrote back about the 2500/= refund they just charged the difference of Rs.2,400/= and continued for another 5 years. That means just for Rs. 4,900/= I got India Today for 15 years. But this increased the client base and they got high value advertisement since they had multiplied the circulation and blown the client base, they earned through the advertisement revenue. This is the way to earn high profit through the high volume, not merely by increasing the price. Hence retention of customers does help in increasing the volume of the company.

Leaders core values are building factors for the organization his clarity on the values, to develop the organization culture in the organization (not individual). Must treat others with dignity and respect. Our values are the glue that holds employee to the organization and values are exhibited in our dealings. Do not underestimate any employee at any level within the organization, everyone is CEO of his individual unit within his social network where he spends 2/3 rd of the time out of 24 hrs of each working day.

One cannot call himself a leader, it is only his people who accept and decide if one is a leader or not. It is his people who accept an individual as a leader, depending on the individuals qualities.

Many great people have given different different definition of Leadership:

John Maxwell a great motivator defines as, “the first and perhaps the final test of leadership is your ability to attract and keep followers”.

“The final test of a leader is that he leaves behind in other people the conviction and the will to carry on”

“Test your leadership: Turn around and see if anyone is following you”

Field Marshall Montgomery, Military chief, Word War II, “The final test of a leader is the feeling you have when you leave his presence after a conference……. Have you a feeling of uplift and confidence?.

Page 70: Leadership - al-habeeb teachers' training college

128 Leadership Leader (CEO) is the Dealer of Hopes…… 129♦ ♦

D Eisenhower, “Leadership is similar of a piece of string: pull it, and it will follow anywhere you wish. Push it, it will go nowhere at all.”

Winston Churchill, “The price of greatness is responsibility”.In business and in life, one will get the behavior one deserves. We need our heart-count to match our headcount.A leader needs a compass more than a watch that will always

guide him to his goal.“Do not confuse motion with progress – a rocking horse keeps

moving but makes no progress.”“The more busier you are the more average you will become”Communication with the people is another thing that keeps the

glue intact, communicate with your people even if you have nothing special or new to share with them, I have lot to know from each one of you” this is the way to keep communication alive.

Charles Darwin said,”It is not the largest or strongest species that survive, not the most intelligent, it is the one most responsive to change.” Be open to change.

A leader develops a sense of assessment, what is called the “sixth sense.”

Take case of Abraham Lincoln. Gettysburg address was less than 300 words and was just fort 2 minutes but even today it carries its impact. People still quote and respect Abraham Lincoln who has died one and a half century back. His life is an example how he started and what were his circumstances. His father used to take all type of jobs. Someone questioned him “what was your Grandfather, he said I know what his Grand Son is.”

Leader must lead his people not compete with them.Leadership is an honor and has to be earned. To be a leader you need preparation and plan. You cannot blame

anyone other than yourself. Take learning from these people they have established their leadership by their actions:KiranMazumdar: Started the Biocon India Group. Any business that cannot value its employees

cannot endure. Any business that does not deliver value to its

customers cannot endure. Any business that cannot create value for its

stakeholders cannot endure

Any business that does not value its suppliers cannot endure.

Any business that does not have value cannot endure.

AzimPremji: He was doing his engineering at Stanford University when he heard about the death of his father ad he was just 20 years, he rushed to Mumbai to take charge of his business, his other share holders wanted the company to be sold to highest bidder, total turn over of the company was just Rs. 4 crores. And producing sunflower Brand of vanaspati. Today the sale of the group is over 46000/= crores. He established his leadership and earned the respect, When he took over the company’s turn over was 4 crores and he bought this to 46000 crores. Admirable!

NarayanaMurthy: He qualified for the admission to IIT, but his father said, family can not afford. Finally he did his Graduation in electric from NIE, Mysore and post graduation in electric from IIT Kanpur in 1969. He got offers from Telco, ECIL, Air India. But he joined IIM Ahmadabad as they were installing a Hewlett-Packard minicomputer and received a salary of Rs.800/= a month. After this he took up a job at Patni Computers System (PCS). Here six friends joined. One from Roorki University, one from NGEF, one from Union Carbide and one from BEST Mumbai and Mr Murthy all pooled Rs.10,000/= (which they borrowed from their better – halves. Murthy had 2 bed room flat at Pune, he spared one bed room. Times were so tough, it took them one year to get the telephone, 2 years to get the licence to import a computer.

President J F Kennedy had said, “If a society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot

save the few who are rich” Keeping this in view they offered, ESOP to their employes. In 1992 IBM came to Bangalore, there was a big threat we might loose our people, but they handled the situation Today, Infosys Campus are in almost all the major cities in India and at Bangalore itself it is spread over 50 acres.

Deepak S Parekh HDFC capitalized on “Roti (Bread) Kapda (clothing) and Makaan (Housing). Among these Makaan is the most expensive, this is a dream of most of the human beings all around the world.. HDFC till now has given housing loan to more than 2 million families. Deepak joined in 1978 there were hardly any one in housing finance in such a big way.Deepak believes in “Leadership is not a one person phenomenon. It is not restricted to the t op of the organization. There must be formal and informal leaders at all levels of the organization.

Investment in the housing is more than Rupees. 65,000/= crores. A part from housing they also started HDFC Bank, standard Life Insurance Company, HDFC Mutual fund all have taken well, HDFC is now listed on the New York stock Exchange. This is the difference what Deepak as a leader did. Before joining he wa serving as Chartered Accountant over seas and earned a handsome salary but accepted to move back to India and joined his uncle at HDFC.

Some one put a question,” what is your management style internally in HDFC as a group his answer was, “ The style is accessibility – openness.”

Some one enquired from Deepak, as who are your Hero’s, he said Keshub Mahindra, Dhirubhai, Kumara Mangalam Birla, Narayan

Marthy, Success and Money has not gone to their Head, neither recognition.

Dr. Verghese Kurien Founder Chairman of NDDB & Founder of “Utterly butterly delicious” AMUL (Anand Milk Union Limited).

He was awarded Padma Vibhushan, Receipient of Krishi Ratna and Ramaon Magsaysay award for community leadership. The World Food Prize, International Person of the year award from the US. The Waterler Peace Prize from the Netherlands and the Rochdale Pioneers Trust Prize. Glasgow University conferred D.Sc (honors cause) degree besides 17 other honorary doctorate degreed. He has been a Member of Planning Commission, Vice Chancellor.

Once The High Commissioner of New Zealand who was on a visit to Anand said,” It is alright if you make powder and sell it here. But you have started exporting it. That is our market.” Kurien replid, Madam, I frankly did not know that the world market is your private property and that I should not encroach upon it. She said, “You are making fun of me, “ To which he said,” Madam, would you like to get out of my office? “He then added,”You must understand, if all of us Indians decided to spit together your country will be drowned in our spit. So, she went to Delhi and tells all the ambassadors, “Kurien threatened to spit on our country. He is a mad man.”

These are some people who made a difference in the life of a common man. Think of Rattan Tata he established a factory in United Kingdom, how many people are directly employed in TATA’s and how many are indirectly engaged. Just imagine how many people are directly employed with TATA

Page 72: Leadership - al-habeeb teachers' training college

Group and how many are indirectly engaged. They are the people where the leadership is built in them. What a difference they made for the human beings.

India used to depend upon the import of food grain, it was mostly the US who used to come to the help, and this package used to be called “ PL 480” India was at the receiving end as there was shortage of food grains in India, but thanks to our great Agricultural Scientists

Prof. Swaminathan, who is known for Green revolution, the yield per acre of land got multiplied and we as on today with the added population are self sufficient in food supplies. Shreedharan, who is known for developing Metro. This really will address the commuting problem in India, once the net work of metro develops fully, travel will become easy and economical. People will save lot of commuting time, and that time can be better utilized.

Sam Pitto da he improved the communication In India, this was a known fact that to get a telephone connection was a dream in India. People had to use approach for getting a priority connection, that too one had to wait for number of months to get the connection. Narayan Murti the founder of Infosys that he had to wait for one year to get the telephone connection. Thanks to the leader ship of Sam Pittoda he solved this communication and today almost each member of the family has his individual number and every one is connected and can be contacted. The present digsital revolution would not have been possible if the revolution in communication had not come.

These are the clear example of great Leadership of all these people who really brought in the difference in the lives of the human beings. Shree dharan and Sam Pittoda, one solved the commutation and other communication.

Leaders do not blame the time. Business is the sign of mediocrity. Pt Nehru had said, it is only the busy man who has time to attend everything. Abdul Kalam while working as scientist wanted to see Dr. Sara Bai, Dr Sara Bai said he can meet him at 3:30 AM. This he has mentioned this in his book (Wings on fire, page 49). This clearly shows how the people handle / manage the time. In your daily life you will find people blaming time,

A part from the few listed above there are numerous people who have contributed in shaping our today, just think of Elisha Graves Otis, demonstrated the safety elevator with counter weight in 1903 which made the tall building practical and possible. Earlier the walls of the building used to be thick so that the weight of the building will be on the walls, but invention of steel buildings made it possible4 to have multistory buildings. The first skyscraper was constructed in New York in 1913 and it was 55 storey, its name was Woolworth building, and its height was 791 ft

In 1930 New York skyscraper the team just added 10 floors in 10 days a record time and this was a steel building.

In Piccadilly, London, Ritz Hotel was completed in 1904 with all the Luxuries like electric lights, lifts and telephones.

These all are the acts of leadership in their respective fields, they thought beyond what was present during that time. This all starts

can it be like this and they keep working on their thought till they reach to it’s conclusion.

Invention of Electricity was no more than a vision at the dawn of century, and novelist Emile Zola wrote in 1901, it should be merely be supplied, but lavished, that men may use it at their will, as the air they breathe. And we practically see this, Just press the switch and it is there, at any hour of the day.

Room heater, electric water heater, hot water bottle, electric cooker, dishwasher, first Frigidaire, Food mixers, Dust Buster vacuum cleaner, and many more utility items these all were for the comfort of the human being almost all these were invented in early 1900’s.

Introduction of Steam engine, Electricity, Telephone, Dynamo, Camera, Automobiles, Aircraft, Railway, Computer, All these people who invented these were real Hero’s and leaders in their field and their contribution to change the life for modern life can not be measured in any yardstick. They did their best in their roll. And left their foot mark for the years to come.

Their contribution changed day to day life and brought a big difference to the economy. Unemployment just dropped to the minimum and there was a lot of cash flow in the economy.

Another land mark Leader ship by our scientist who worked in the field of Medicine and invented many new methods to bring the difference in the life of Human Beings.

Break through In the 20th century, as medical science entered inMedicine: in age of achievement, Did research into the root

causes of disease lead to better understanding; And new machines allowed doctors to

record what was happening inside the body. X-Ray, discovered by Wilhelm Roentgen in 1901, Basic Experiments in renal dialysis were done in 1914, Microscope in 1921, Electrocardiograph by Willen Einthoven in 1924, Werner Forssmann invented Cardian Cathrter in 1929, EEG by Hans Berger in 1929, First heart catheterization in 1940, Willem Kolff invented dialysis machine in 1943, Charles Hufnagel implanted artificialheart valve in 1952, Ultrasound in 1952, First heart operation using John Gibbon’s lung heart machine in 1953. And many more and it is an on going process now, further research is being carried out to find new and to find improvement or advancement on the earlier findings.

Energy was another thing required for the improvement of Human beings, need of energy is required in Industrial as well as domestic need.

Thermal Cracking was developed in 1913, Turbo – drilling was developed in Russia, First offshore platform strikes oil in the Gulf of Mexico in 1947, Oil was discovered in the North Sea in 1969, Oil from North Sea starts to flow into Britain in 1975. First Nuclear Power station started operating at Obninsk, Russia in 1954,

French build a plant to collect solar heat from the sea, off the coast of Cuba in 1929, Bell telephone scientists notice silicon’s ability to convert sunlight into electricity in 1954, US launched a satellite with silicon solar panel in 1958, First World Solar Challenge for solar powered cars were made in 1987 at Australia,

Water Power was used as early as in 1st century BC to turn grindstones in mills. Water was important source of energy, most of the mills used the water power and as such location of industries was closer to a river.

With the advancement wind power was explored, First wind farm were in Altamont and Tehachapi, California, USA was set up in 1981, First wave-power device, was set up at Scotland in 1988.

Agriculture was another field, food grains are produced out of agriculture produce and all the population is dependent on the agriculture produce. Scientists worked keenly to find tools for high yield and how to mechanize the agriculture work. Slowly and slowely some break through was found.

Work to improve the farm yield picked up, First lightweight tractor invented in Biggle swade, Beds, UK., The first model U tractor with the rubber tyres got developed in 1929, combine harvester was tested in 1937, these tools helped in farming and the output was increased many folds. This was so much appreciated by the users that the number of Tractors exceeded the number of horses and mules. High yield led to pests and now work for fighting the pests started, Airsprey and spaying on the ground of chemical power wasusedtofightagainstthepests

Need for transportation was felt and great men started working on the finding of these breakthrough as is said Breakdown will lead to Breakthrough, same happened:

Next came the Horseless carriage to Dream Machine, Daimler introduced the Mercedes in 1901, Model T from FORD was introduced in 1908, Since they were started with a handle, externally, The electric self starter was developed and introduced in 1912, In the interest of the speed up production assembly line production was introduced in 1913 by Ford, Volkswagen introduced Beetle in 1934, To take care of safety Airbags were fitted to some Mercedes in 1981,

In 1918 a 22 year Chicago car salesman Walter Jacob thought people would like to rent a car ratherthanuseTaxiHe started a fleet of 12 Cars and bought models T Fords. This was a new concept and appreciated, in 1923 he sold his company to Mr HERTZ. Now this is a world wide name for car rentals. Today car industry all over the world has picked up and some time for some models one has to book an order and wait for the delivery. Automobiles is a big Industry all over the world, there are numerous car models in the market.

Radar – gun was invented to check the speeding cars. This was developed by Sir Robert Watson-Watt. In 1954 he was speeding for a speaking engagement and was spotted by the speed-gun, Watson-Watt, identified himself and pleaded for the mercy, but he wasmadetopayhisfineon the spot. He only had invented this device and he was spotted by this device and paid the fine.

Next came the problem of traffic jams followed by parking problem. Zebra crossing was invented in 1951 to facilitate the pedestrians to cross over, InChicagoAutomatedtrafficsystem was in vented in 1965, parking meters were developed and in 1930’s – Parking meters had become a familiar sight on London streets.

These are some of the step where great people contributed for change in for day to day life.

A leader needs a compass more than a watch that will always guide him to his goal.

Leader must not consider with the motion, he has to keep progressing towards the goal, – a rocking horse keeps moving but makes no progress”

Leader has to take care of three P’s. People, Product and the Profit.Selection of People and building of the people should be the first

and foremost responsibility of the CEO or the head of the organization. This is one of the most important assignment of the CEO / leader.

Try to use six honest questions while planning your requirement. A leader can achieve his objective only through his Team. Hence selection is very important

What What is the requirement, and for what position the person is being considered?

Where Where do I need the individual, what is present strength, can anyone within be considered.

When When the person is required, does he need training before we look for output from the individual – consider that lead time. Do find the right time before placing him.

If individual requires training, the training manual should be prepared in advance so that he can be given without loss of time. (different manuals should be ready for different positions).

Why Why to cons ider the individual, what are his strengths and what can be his weaknesses, do consider all those. SWOT analysis of individual will help to assess all these. Keep Org chart and see where does the candidate fits in and how he will advance in his carrier.

Which Which is the best time to hire him, do my people have sufficient time to train him, do I have material in line for him to understand what will be company’s expectation from him. What are the expectations of the individual, what are his goals.

Who Who is the best person to take him to the job or give him training on job. Availability of that person is also important, he may be on tour, maybe he is tied up with some other commitment) It should not happen he is still idle for want of the individual. This will give a poor impression to the new comer.

Do consider all the 6 X W’s before you proceed for selection.Always remember : “ Light travels faster then sound, that is

why some people seem brighter unless you hear them speak.” – Do not make a quick judgment, you must evaluate the individual before reaching a conclusion. .

“Many things like exit interview done at the time of firing, should have been done at the time of hiring” Do not rush on hiring, firing plays adverse effect not only on the individual but on total team. It need’s very mature approach, otherwise may prove expensive. I remember a case study where employees convinced the client to directly deal with them. In this situation CEO of the unit not only lost the employee but business too as the customer chooses to be with the performer (employee) rather than with the company they were dealing with.

Hence hiring and firing should never be done without proper and diligent study of the each individual case by case.

Any wrong decision can turn to be too expensive for the organization. Organizations invest good amount and time in training a person for their required job. No one is productive till he undergoes that training and if the person leaves the organization, all that investment turns not only a wasteful investment, but an experienced executive can be operative right from day one. One is never sure if the replacement will be perfect match to the need of the organization.

Submission of evaluation report periodically can take care to such situations and corrective steps can be taken to caution the individual well in advance to improve on the weakness. Submission of evaluation report has a big gain, report also serves in evaluating the evaluators. It is said “you are assessed while you ass” This evaluation should

Page 76: Leadership - al-habeeb teachers' training college

not be taken to find faults but to plug in the required strengths. This is a time tested method to grow the corporate. If we can not retain the experience staff, we are on a Greece pool, we keep on training and training, which will convert the organization to a bench office where each will join to find a new opportunity as the organization would have lost the reputation.

LEADERS TO LEAD

Any organization will need a leader to lead we have done some study on the roll of a top man to build the organization such as,

Leaders can’t wait or look upon others, but simply they have to lead, find solutions lead others by example, give vision, provide direction, motivate people with positive energy.

Leader ship has no geographical boundaries. It can start from your home, neighborhood, society, school, college or work place. It helps you to build your identity.

Leaders are optimistic. They take all type of challenges small or big. They turn problems in to solutions, (inventions) every situation they turn in to Gold (Win –Win)

Trust and trust are the basic and fundamentals qualities for a leadership. Trust and transparency is what strengthens one’s leadership. It builds the organization / institution, creates safe environment to work at.

Leader should not get wallow in the aura of power. Should empower, teach and encourage others to make decisions.

A True leader must not pretend and mislead people that will tarnish his image very soon.

To know his people, should be leader’s concern. A pat from the Leader does magic and that magic is reflected in the output of the people.

Leader is one who has commitment to accomplish the task.A leader must lead his people not compete with them.Leaders work from intuition i.e., sixth sense, this sixth sense gets

developed as you keep on working with sincerity and commitment.Leadership is an honor and has to be earned. One may have been appointed as CEO, he is not appointed as

leader. People will decide if he is accepted as their Leader. You cannot impose a Leader over the people.

CEOs should spend more time with the people and win over that they accept him as their Leader, they should spend more time in winning

the hearts of the people, where they will work for passion centre rather than a profit centre.

To be a leader you need preparation and plan. You cannot blame anyone other than yourself. Take case of Kiran Mazumdar, Azim Premji, N. R. Narayana Murthy, Deepak Parekh or Dr. Verghese Kurien. People who have made it, had determination. The man, who established the Starbuck, The man, who started the Fed EX, What was Brain Tracy at the start he even cleaned the dishes in a Restaurant. Today Brain Tracy is invited as the top motivator by 500 fortune companies. , Akshai Kumar, Bollyword star even at the start of his carrier he worked at a waiter but to day he is one of the leading start in the film Industry. Johey Walker, started his carrier as a bus conductor, not only these few, there have been many more people who had a humble start and latter on the sky was the limit for them. Take case of our ex president Abdul Kalam, at the star t of his carrier he even did the News Paper by selling News Paper. Do those people look back ?, No, They are clear with their aim and focus. But they have the commitment to progress. They all work on a plan and put their heart and soul to full fill their mission. As said, “ Planning leads to achievement”, “well planned is half done”.

Let us see what Bhagavad Gita teaches us regarding obtaining the results. “ Yatra Yogeshvarah Krsno Yatra Partho Dhanur Dharah, Tatra Srir Vijayo Bhutir Dhruva Nitir Matir Mama.”

Where ever is Krishna, (truth and sacred approach) the Lord of Yoga, wherever is Partha ( one who is famous for concentrating on the target) the great archer, there all virtues such as prosperity, victory,glory,righteousnessandfirmpolicyprevail.(whereyoufindtheseyoursuccessisassured)Suchismyfirmbelief.

This is our advice to the upcoming youths who are aspiring for the future, they must think of the above and make this as a part of their life.

Leader has to be smart and intelligent. It is not just about knowing the right answers for him, it is about knowing the right questions. When one ask a question, his intellect is assessed by the level of question he puts forward.

Leader is looked as a dealer in hope. The Leaders words today do create, world of tomorrow for the team, Your position holds responsibility for many.

Page 77: Leadership - al-habeeb teachers' training college

Great Leaders do SWOT analysis, they look at their strengths, look at their weaknesses, they look at the opportunities what they provided to their people, keep track of the threats.

Leader must know the key area questions like Situation, Strategy, Structure, Systems and Staff.

Leader must have vision and be visionary.A Leader must ensure good and effective process run across the

organization without any discrimination, as water of the rivers flow across, does not see the border, water is focused to its aim to reach to the sea.

A progressive Leader must be open to new Idea’s, do not blindly follow the traditions or what was happening years before. A Leader must be swift. Chinese proverb says,“afishrotsfromthehead”. A Leader must keep on exploring the innovative methods. Innovation will ensure a bright future. Do not be worried about the breakdown, every breakdown will lead to Break through if they try to look for solution.

The more a leader will make you sweat in practice, the less you will bleed in battle, and are bound to come with high achievements.

Leaders should be like thunder and storm then only you can have rainbow. Not occasional storm or few clouds.

Field Marshall Slim said, “There are no such thing as a bad regiment–justbadofficers.Agoodleadermakesallthatdifference.

Boss and Leader are two different rolls,Character is the key to leadership.Action of a leader speaks louder than his words.A business where leadership has stopped has little chance of survival.

Some of the different qualities are mentioned here under

Leaders prefer empowerment and prefer to win people over through respect.

Boss think that people need controlling tightly but leaders set their people free.

Boss drives his employees, a leader coaches his employees.Boss sees themselves as commanders but leaders see themselves

as coaches.Boss inspires fear among his people, a leader generates enthusiasm

among his people.

Boss makes decisions autocratically, Leader implements decisions democratically

Boss believe in confrontation, Leader prefer collaboration.Boss says “GO”, but a leader will say “let us go,” a Leader acts

as a part of the team.Boss like cornering people, leader prefers getting people in their

corner.Boss places blame for the breakdown on the people, a leader fixes

the breakdown, from breakdown he finds breakthrough..Boss like giving their people heat, a good leader prefer to give

their people light.Boss treat their staff harshly but leaders understand that the way

you treat the staff they will treat customers same way.Boss says I, leader believes in the power of his people and will

address as we,Boss sees information as source of power, leaders do not withhold,

filter or retain information – they see information as enlightenment.Boss like to take centre stage, Leader see themselves as directors of

a corporate play, and work in wings, allow others to take the applause.Boss likes to make decisions themselves, leaders delegate as much

as they can.Boss often stops people coming through the ranks because they

feel threatened; Leader encourages the next generation not just to follow them but to overtake.

Boss tends to cling on to their job, but leader lead as long as they keep on going ahead.

Bosses are builders and administrators, Leaders are architects and innovators.

Bosses concentrate on techniques and leaders concentrate on principles.

Boss takes credit, a leader gives credit to his people.Leaders walk the way they talk or it is also “do as I say and as I do”Good leaders are great communicators.Good leaders are human gardenersGood leaders are remembered for their passion, compassion, they

are different, they have moral courage, they are risk taking. They have sense of fun and adventure. They have integrity, they are sharp in Judgment.

Abraham Lincoln, J F Kennedy, Pt. Nehru, Churchill, Gandhi they had the ability to motivate and inspire.

For a leader it is said, “ If you can’t bring change in your people you will have to change your people”.

Organizations must have right people on board and the wrong people off the board.

While climbing the ladder of success you have to observe that the ladder is leaning on the right wall.

The best strategy these times is “to develop people who are capable of operating as business partners, that is why you find progressive organizations give stock to its performing employees, they rope them as partners of the venture. Progressive leaders know that progress is a team effort and the prosperity to be shared with the team members to keep on making progress. This needs high relationship, management skills and high level of understanding of the customers business at all levels.

If people loose trust in the Leader, it may take years to regain. Your dealings build the Trust.

Trust is the glue that binds the people to their leader. The Leader should be a solution Manager, the day people stop

bringing their problems to the leader for solution, is the day he stops to be their leader.

“Good leaders have a vision; better leaders share a vision; the best leaders invite others to join them in spreading he vision.”

Leader can’t inspire unless he is inspired, it is only a lit candle that can light others.

Board Members formulate Strategy in the boardroom, but they are implemented on the ground that may be rain-soaked trenches of each department. it is the skill of the CEO / Leader to see that implementations of those strategies is done..

A truly effective leader is like the little spring that yields a mighty river.George Burns, political campaigner for JFKennedy, defined

leadership as “Transactional Leadership and Transformational Leadership” Transactional leadership is where there is give and take, like job for votes. And Transformational leadership is where a leader transforms his people.

Many think by throwing money, they can buy every one. It is not in case of a true Leader, A true Leader cannot be won over by money nor will money motivate him.

You Choose what you want to be…………………………

When you evaluate a Leader / C E O., you probe how wise or intelligent one is:-

Thoughtsoffewgreatmen,howtheythinkaboutLeadership:

Fred A. Manske, Jr, “The ultimate leader is one who is willing to develop people to the point that they eventually surpass him or her in knowledge and ability”.

Gilbert K. Chesterton, “There is a great man who makes every man feel small. But the real great man is the man who makes every man feel great.”.

Sandra Swinney, “It is amazing how much people can get done if they do not worry about who gets the credit.”

John Maxwell, “Leaders must be enough to relate to others, but far enough ahead to motivate them.”

Henry Miller, “The real leader has no need to lead- he is content to point the way.”

James Crook, “ The man who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his back on the crowd.

Thomas Fuller, “ If you command wisely, you’ll be obeyed cheerfully”.

Rosalynn Carter, “A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.”

David Gergen, “A leader’s role is to raise people’s aspirations for what they can become and to release their energies so they will try to get there.”

Warren G. Bennis, “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality”.

Winston Churchill, “The price of greatness is responsibility.”

John Maxwell, “The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails”

Robert Half, “There is something that is much more scarce, something rerer than ability. It is the ability to recognize ability.

Walter Lippmann, “The final test of a leader is that he leaves behind him in other men the conviction and will to carry on.”

Unknown, “A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the need of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the quality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.”

CEO Mr. Peter Bra beck, believed that the company should develop a sense of belonging in an employee.

A man is known by the company he keeps, an organization is known by the people it is composed of.

In fact every employee wants to make a positive contribution to work provided there is a friendly and positive environment.

H R Manager need to have a good understanding of finance, the companies are increasingly concerned with the bottom Line.

While selecting the employees, one has to have a through home work, Infosys visits the best institutions and have a “Wide angle approach.” To pick the best. At institutes they have a chance of wider choice to select the best. When excellent manager are performing employees are hired, they give much more to the company than what they receive from it. If the company hires people who are smaller, it will become of dwarfs. But when we hire people who are bigger we become a company of giants.”

Retention of Customers 149♦

148

Chapter-15

Retention of Customers

Retention of customers is as important as retention of staff. Each and every industrialist has to work for retention of clients. Client list must grow year after year.

Attached brief can clear its importance. It is our customers who keep us together, if customers turn their

face, an organization how big it may be will extinct by force. What happened to Ambassador, Fiat, Weston TV, Standard TV,

Alwayan Fridge, HMT Watches, Rajdoot Motor Cycle. During the eighties 46% of the top 500 companies disappeared because they failed to deliver customer’s expectations. The market had changed rapidly. Take the case of Telephone, Pager, Fax, Telegram, money order and many more.

To remain as market leader, industry must keep on changing with the market needs. Charles Darwin, “It is not the largest or strongest species that survive, not the most intelligent, - It is the one most responsive to change.” This only sends message to our leaders to be vigilant to the changes and make good as soon as it is spotted.

“Unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning” Bill Gates.

To give you a case study when a deaf ear was turned to the advice. Ford motor car was selling there T Model as 7:1 against other manufacturers. Sale was going great. Ford was advised to change the T mode, that was not liked by him and he started losing his prime men and one of them Mr. Knudsen who joined General Motors (GM) in 1920. At GM he made the Chevrolet and that drove the T Model from the market. The production was stopped for six months. But it could not regain to be the market leader what T Model was. One must change or the situation will change by itself. That happened with many who did not act to change and became a part of history.

With my experience I have seen most of the corporate holding regular meetings with the respective staff to discuss the attrition, how many hold meetings with the staff to review the “Lost Customers”, i.e. customers attrition?

Delegate this activity of “Lost Customers” to senior responsible persons. To conduct the exit interview. In accruing a customer companies make lot of investment, customers only know the benefit of the product, once they use it. Even for the first time, to convince them to use is the marketing depot’s skill.

Returns are long drawn. When the clients repeatedly keep on patronizing the product. Marketing staff works for the accusation of new clients, and old gets step motherly treatment and get lost. Companies must be serious to ensure retention of the previous customers, they are easy to retain and give better profitability. Large customer’s leads to large volume, large volume leads to higher profitability.

Examples of high volume are given below:When early the cooking gas in 60’s was introduced people had

to be convinced to use it. But in 90’s people are ready to buy the same and are ready even to pay higher price.

Maruti car, people were apprehensive about it. But today situation is different. Maruti has sold few lac cars. The car is well accepted by one and all. Company during that time not only sold the product but developed the car concept and the market got developed. It is said Henry Ford brought the car culture to America same way we notice the contribution of Maruti in developing the car culture in India.

A proper track of “Lost Customers” could ensure the attrition of the customers. I will call this exercise as R & D of the marketing division to expand the product market. Attrition can be reduced as much as possible by keeping a close track on the subject. Invite customer’s feedback. If an industry is able to retain and widen its customer base they will be able to give price benefit to the clients. High volume will help the industry.

Ford car in 1908 was sold for $ 825/- and the same because of high volume was sold for $ 275/= in 1920. Between 1908 to 1927 Ford sold 17 million “T” model cars. (17,000,000) in 19 years, average 2,500 cars a day. This is possible when your customers are with you. (See the Attached Page)

India Today in 1999 – 2000 came up with an offer of pay Rs.2,500/= and get the India today for 10 years and after 10 years get back Rs.2,500/=. Lac’s opted for the scheme. Increased client base and subscribers. High volume in circulation attracted high premium advertisements. (Money Back Certificate Attached).

Ihadoptedfor10yearsin2000.In2010,onexpiry,theysentnew rates for 5 years, Rs. 4,900/= against Rs2,500/= for 10 years. and that too with money back. I sent them the Money Back Certificate value Rs.2,500/= issued in year 2000 and the balance Rs.2,400/= both together made Rs. 4,900/-. And my subscription was renewed for 5 years till 20/4/2015. (Copy attached) For Rs. 4,900/= I got the India Today for 15 years. It was only possible by having high volume subscribers. base by retaining the old and adding the new customers.

It is the customer who keeps the companies in business. If customers change their loyalty to other brands, the companies’ future can be dark. Take the case of Ambassador, Fiat car and many more products.

Retention of customers is as important as retention of staff. Each and every industrialist has to work for this, and ensure, how the list of clients can be grown year after year.

This is only possible if we work on the analysis on the client’s pattern

Use the professional services to increase your clients year after year.

Speech is an Art

Speech is an Art. If one knows what, when and how to talk then such a person will be successful in life.

“Your Language is the Reflection of your intellect”Here is a story. ....with a good message and moral which we all, I think must emulate

and follow! As King Haroun and Queen Zubayda were sitting in their palace

one day, a fisherman who was selling fresh fish was brought in front of them. King Parveez decided to buy a fish and gave the fisherman 4000 dirham for it.

The fisherman was overjoyed. He thanked King Haroun and left.Queen Zubayda turned to her husband in anger and scolded him

for paying so much for a fish. King Haroun let her have her say but said that the fish was purchased and that there was nothing that could be done about it.

However, the Queen was adamant and insisted that the fisherman be brought back.

“We will ask the fisherman about the gender of the fish,” she said. “If he answers that it is female, we will say that we wanted a male fish and if his response is that it is male, we will say that we wanted a female fish! Either way, we will be able to return the fish and have our money back.”

So the poor fisherman was called back and was asked the question.Fortunately, he was clever enough not to be caught out.He replied, “The fish is neither male or female. It is eunuch (neutral).”King Haroun was so impressed by the ingenuity of the man that he

ordered a further 4000 dirham to be paid to him. The fisherman thanked

the King again but as he was about to leave with the heavy bag of money, one of the coins fell onto the floor. The fisherman immediately bent down to look for the coin. Queen Zubayda was already upset that the fisherman had been given 8000 dirham.

“Look how miserly this man is!” the Queen exclaimed. “One coin has fallen out of his bag full of money and he searches for it instead of leaving it for some other poor servant to find.”

The man heard this remark and said, “O Queen, it is not out of miserliness that I search for the coin but rather because it had the picture of generous King Haroun on it. I would not tolerate anyone to cause dishonor to the King by treading on the coin.”

The King was so happy with this response that he immediately called for another 4000 dirham to be given to the fisherman. When Queen Zubayda saw all this, she thought it was better to hold her tongue and let the man go with the 12000 dirham before the King decided to increase the amount again.
