OUR GRATITUDE
Sindh Board of Investment (SBI) have an objective to develop and promote an investment friendly environment to boost economic activity, bring value addition to all sectors of economy and encourage public private partnership for socio-economic development of Pakistan in general and Sindh in particular. It also aims to focus on ignored but high potential sectors of economy.
In pursuance of above mentioned objectives, SBI organized a mega event Livestock, Dairy, Fisheries & Poultry Seminar & Exhibition on 7th & 8th Feb, 2011. The objective was to promote these highly potential sectors of economy such as Livestock, Dairy, Fisheries and Poultry. It is pertinent to mention here that LDF 2011 was a profound success whereby more than 40, 000 visitors attended the event, around 200 exhibitors’ participated and business deals worth Rs 400 million were materialized.
Strengthened by the overwhelming success of LDF 2011, Sindh Board of Investment in collaboration with Livestock & Fisheries Department and Agriculture Department, Government of Sindh had taken a step forward to present sequel of LDF 2011 making it a popular event for the people of Sindh. This year edition includes Agriculture sector and its upstream/downstream projects as well. It is pertinent to mention that Rs. 1 billion deals materialized at LDFA 2012. Exhibition consists of 340 stalls whereby more than 142 local and foreign companies participated. Delegates from China, Japan, Switzerland, Srilanka, United States of America (USA), United Kingdom and Italy were also participated in Seminar & Exhibition.
Tremendous cooperation and support from Livestock & Fisheries Department, Agriculture Department, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and whole Team of SBI is highly appreciable for organizing this event successfully.

LDFA 2012- AT A GLANCEOVERVIEW
Sindh, the most resourceful province of Pakistan, is blessed with a host of attractive business and investment opportunities. Sindh’s agri-economy contributes 23% to the country’s GDP. Keeping in view global food security concerns, its vast agricultural expanse has the capacity to become region’s food basket. Introduction of technology, efficient irrigation systems, hybrid seeds, quality pesticides and modern implements can help attain its true potential.
Local and foreign investors have shown keen interest in this sector. The huge gap between Sindh’s aquaculture, livestock, dairy and agriculture production and the capacity to processthe same provide opportunities for various types of investments in value addition.
The Government of Sindh have taken various initiatives in terms of subsidized financing, technological support, research & development and capacity building of farmers. The Livestock sector contributed 11.4% to GDP in 2009-10. Pakistan earned USD 717 million from leather exports in CY09 and a meager $96 Million from meat exports.
There is a huge potential in the Livestock, Dairy, Fisheries and Agriculture sectors and province of Sindh with abundance of these resources, have the tendency & capacity to produce more and generate more income from these sectors.
After the success of Livestock, Dairy and Fisheries Exhibition & Seminar 2011, Sindh Board of Investment have organized its second edition in Karachi on 28th & 29th January 2012 to highlight investment opportunities and promote the potential of these sectors.

PRESENTATION ON SEMINAR OBJECTIVES BY MR. MOHAMMAD YOUNUS DAGHA, SECRETARY TO GOVT OF SINDH, INVESTMENT & COAL & ENERGY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT:
The Seminar started with the Welcome Address and presentation on Seminar Objectives by Mr. Mohammad Younus Dagha, Secretary Investment DepartmentGovernment of Sindh. Mr. Dagha welcomed the distinguish guests and general Public to this mega event, LDFA 2012 on behalf of Government of Sindh and Sindh Board of Investment.
In his presentation, Mr. Dagha gave a brief review of progress since LDF 2011. He informed participants that in LDF 2011, SBI pledged to promote Halal sector in Sindh and hold International Halal Conference, to activate SEDF (Sindh Enterprise Development Fund) and to facilitate access to finance and to make LDF a regular annual feature.
Secretary Investment highlighted that SBI has successfully fulfilled its commitments and LDFA 2012 is a sequel of LDF 2011 with much wider scope of activities. He added that this year’s event was stretched over double the space that was used for last year’s event. Last year, LDF exhibition was restricted to only two Halls but this year, LDFA 2012 was spread over the entire area of Karachi Expo with multiple activities simultaneously going on in inner and outer areas of Expo centre. Strengthened by the overwhelming success of LDF 2011, this year edition also includes Agriculture sector and its upstream/downstream projects.

Mr. Dagha said that SBI successfully organised International Halal Conference (IHC)2011 in March with Halal Development Council (HDC) Malaysia and then in Oct 2011 with Thai Halal Agency. It has also established SEDF under Investment department in March 2011.

SPEECH BY HONOURABLE NISAR KHUHRO, SPEAKER, PROVINCIAL ASSEMBLY SINDH:
Speaker Sindh Assembly and Chief Guest of the Seminar, Honourable Nisar Ahmed Khuhro appreciated SBI efforts to bring investors (local and foreign), buyers & consumers under one roof to discuss and share ideas to promote Livestock, Dairy, Poultry, Fisheries and Agriculture sectors.
He said that investors should come forward and invest in Sindh which will be of immense benefit, especially at a time when we have ushered in to a new era of democracy with a renewed pledge of bringing economic progress in the country.
He further shared that we are here to serve people of Sindh and no commercial entity can bring this kind of festivity, exposure and true depiction of investment opportunities in Sindh as you have witnessed here in LDFA 2012.
Honourable Chief Guest further stated that government has created an atmosphere conducive for investment and investors should take advantage of this opportunity to its optimum level.

PRESENTATION BY MR. JAMI MOIZ, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, INSTITUTE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (IBA) ON “HALAL MEAT EXPORT PROVISIONS IN PAKISTAN”
Mr. Jami Moiz briefed the audience about investment opportunities in global Halal sector. He emphasized that certification authorities were essential for promotion of Halal meat export from Pakistan.
Mr. Jami informed participants that annual Halal market size is 2.1 trillion dollars. If Pakistan targets 10% of this market, huge revenues could be earned.
He further added that it’s essential to develop Halal certification, standards and logo.
Mr. Jami added that entrepreneurial mindset is essential for industrial development and economic activity. He further informed that Institute of Business Administration (IBA) has an Enterprise Development Centre and offer to develop business plans for investors.
PRESENTATION BY MR. AKHLAQ ABIDI, PAKISTAN FISHERIES EXPORTERS ASSOCIATION ON “SEA FOOD EXPORT IN PAKISTAN: ISSUES AND WAY FORWARD”:
Mr. Akhlaq Abidi briefed about the Fisheries & Seafood export issues in Pakistan. He highlighted the issues and suggest remedial measures and way forward to resolve these issues.
He informed the audiences that 90% of exported products are unprocessed frozen products. Pakistan is exporting raw material at an average export price of USD 2 whereas similar commodities could earn an average price of USD 24 if processed for value addition.
He highlighted that Fish Harbour situation was adverse due to the fact that it had a maximum capacity to handle 500 boats but currently, 4000 boats were working on it.

Mr. Abidi further added that Mangroves were the natural hatcheries and they should be protected.
He suggested that sustainable fishing policy is essential. Government need to develop branding, packaging and exposure to change the thought process of potential buyers and industry players.
PRESENTATION BY DR. GLEYN BLEDSOE, PROFESSOR, UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO, USA ON “FUTURE OF AQUA CULTURE & FISHERIES IN PAKISTAN”:
Dr. Gleynn Bledsoe enforce that Shrimp is the major product that needs to be developed. He conducted SWOT ANALYSES of Marine Aqua Culture in Pakistan.
He informed that Pakistan possesses nutrient rich water, abundant labour and adequate climatic conditions. Mr. Bledsoe further added that excellent market opportunities are very close to Pakistan. He instilled that Pakistan is the country in the region with no GREEN AQUA CULTURE.
He identified various species inhabited closer to Pakistani shores marketable in global industry mainly European market but unable to advocate good rates when exportedfrom Pakistan due to size, hygiene, standardization and sanitation issues.
Mr. Bledsoe emphasized that Government alone cannot CURE the problem. Direct initiatives are required from private sector and consumers as well.
He suggested that Consumer awareness is needed essentially. They should not buy illegal products. Value addition and development of upstream/downstream industries such as Fishing Boat Industry is essential for the development of Fishing sector. Technologically equipped methods need to be installed. Overfishing is a technique that needs to be replicated with technologically advanced methods. He further emphasized that Government of Sindh needs to develop Aqua Culture Centre to develop critical elements and test cases.

PRESENTATION BY DR. NAZIR HUSSAIN KALHORO, DIRECTOR, SINDH POULTRY VACCINE CENTRE ON “ISSUES IN POULTRY SECTOR & INITIATIVES OF SINDH POULTRY VACCINE CENTRE”:
Dr. Nazir Ahmed Khulhoro initially highlighted growth statistics of Poultry sector and discuss poultry issues and remedies initiatives by Sindh Poultry Vaccine Centre (SPVC).
He elaborated SPVC initiatives to introduce economical feed ingredients to reduce cost of feed. He informed that SPVC is conducting Bio Security Plan and Awareness Program as well.
Mr. Kalhoro informed the participants about the role of live birds markets in dissemination of diseases. He added that foreign vaccines are bringing up diseases therefore SPVC has taken initiative for disease diagnosis and introduction of locally manufactured vaccines.
PRESENTATION BY DR. LAIQ AHMED MEMON, SECRETARY, LIVESTOCK AND FISHERIES DEPARTMENT, GOVERNMENT OF SINDH ON“MODERNIZATION OF LIVESTOCK AND FISHERIES DEPARTMENT”:
Dr. Laiq Ahmed Memon briefed participants regarding available investment projects initiated by Livestock & Fisheries Department, Government of Sindh to promote quality and production in Livestock & Fisheries sectors of Sindh.
He explained that as part of the Government’s pro-investment strategy,Livestock Department has conceived a mega project for Public Private Partnership in the Livestock Sector.The Project is aimed at Establishment of a Dairy Village and Processing Zone for Meat Animals near the port city of Karachi. The site is to be established over 1300 acres with a provision of 1200 acres reserved for expansion.

He also gave a brief introduction about demand supply analyses of dairy and meat industry both globally and locally. Mr. Memon further added that with an animal population of over 50 million, Pakistan suffers from low productivity compared to global players. Pakistan has three times the quantity of animals than Germany butyields one fifth of Germany's and one third of New Zealand’s animals representing a significant loss in potential economic and social values.
PRESENTATION BY MR. SHAHABUDDIN SIDDIQUI, DIRECTOR GENERAL, AGRICULTURE EXTENSION, DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, GOVERNMENT OF SINDH ON “AGRICULTURE EXTENSION ACTIVITIES”:
Mr. Shahabuddin sensitized the audience that training of farmers at grass root levelis conducted by Agriculture department. He added that Agriculture Extension is providing season long trainings to farmers through Farmer Field Schools approach for adoption of Integrated Pest Management methodology and to minimize the use of chemicals in order to lower the cost of production, protection of environment, contamination of water, reduce the pesticide poisoning case. He informed that Agriculture Extension has strong workforce spread over the province covering all agriculture areas.
He further briefed about initiative of establishment of a strong media centre at Hyderabad, which plays a key role for efficient dissemination of improved agriculture knowledge through print, electronic, mobile films show and agriculture exhibitions, etc.
He further said that a network of agriculture markets provide opportunity to farmers to sell their produce to traders, processing units, which facilitate value addition.Accordingly he explained that Establishment of Agriculture Export processing zonesat 8 locations i.e. Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Khairpur, Naushehro Feroze, Shaheed Benazirabad, Khairpur and Ghotki are in progress. Mr. Siddiqui instilled that extension based services of human resource and infrastructure will certainly be helpful towards achievement of SBI in promoting investment in agriculture sector.

PRESENTATION BY MR. HIDAYATULLAH CHAJJERO, DIRECTOR GENERAL RESEARCH, DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, GOVERNMENT OF SINDH ON “AGRICULTURE RESEARCH: ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS”:
Mr. Chajjero said that Directorate of Agriculture Research is aimed to evolve improved and high yielding new varieties of different crops, fruit and vegetables. He added that our aim is to develop appropriate and improved production and protection technologies for fruits & vegetable crops to increase yield and production.
He further explained that Agriculture Research is taking major initiatives to produce pre-basic, basic, certified and approved seeds of different crops forfurther multiplication. He added that Quality seed is also produced under public-private partnership with grower seed companies. To strengthen grower seed companies, they are given related machinery on subsidized rate (70 %).
Government is also providing facilities to the farmers for testing soil, water and fertilizer samples at district level. He further instilled that research activities are being taken to suggest measures for reclamation of saline soils.
PRESENTATION BY MR. MAHMOOD NAWAZ SHAH, GENERALSECRETARY, ABADGAR BOARD ON “SCOPE OF AGRO PROCESSING IN SINDH”:
Mr. Mehmood Nawaz Shah is a known agriculturist and member Board of Directors, SBI. During his presentation he briefed audiences about Agricultural Products, its Current Scenario, conduct Opportunity Analysis and suggestedWay Forward.
He stresses on making efforts for value addition and processing and to make Pulp/purees, drying, Jams,

confectionary etc. He also highlighted the importance of Branding for International Marketing of local products.
PRESENTATION BY MR. MEHBOOB UL HAQ, CEO, SINDH ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT FUND (SEDF) ON “SINDH ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT FUND AND SUCCESS CASES”:
Mr. Mehboob ul Haq highlighted thatincome earned from Agriculture and Fisheries is mostly invested in Petrol Pumps, CNG Stations and Floor Mills.
He informed that SEDF is envisioned to support entrepreneurship development based on Sindh's competitive advantage. He briefed about Financial and technical assistance provided by SEDF to investors including payment of 100% of KIBOR on Capital Cost.
Mr. Haq shared success stories of SEDF initiated and materialised in short span of time of less than a year. He highlighted that up to 14.4 Billion Rupees market potential is available if we are able to export parboiled Rice instead of semi processed Rice to international markets.
PRESENTATION BY MR. AGHA ZAFARULLAH DURANI, DIRECTOR GENERAL, AGRICULTURE ENGINEERING, DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, GOVERNMENT OF SINDH ON “MODERN FARMING PRACTICES: DRIP IRRIGATION, SPRINKLE FARMING, TUNNEL FARMING”:
Mr. Agha reinforces that economic development of Sindh is largely dependant on the progress and growth of Agriculture Sector. He added that the Province of Sindh contributes significantly towards overall national agriculture production in majorcrops.
Mr. Agha brief that Major thrust of the Agriculture Department is towards Modernization of agriculture research, Advancement of mechanized agriculture, development of strong market information system, improved agriculture extension service and efficient Water Management.

He also sensitized audiences regarding various types of Tunnels and their uses. Mr. Agha briefed about Hydroponic farming and suggests it as a very useful method to help overcome food shortages. He further added that Hydroponics can be a futuristic technology for Pakistan to ensure proper supply of vegetable and fruits crops in the country.

DOG & PET SHOW
On the first day of LDFA-2012, Dog & Pet Show was organised. The event was attended by wide audience and gathered interest of general public.
The Show was followed by Prize distribution ceremony whereby shields and certificates were distributed among best of the breed animals for their appreciation and recognition of
the efforts.

HORSE & CATTLE SHOW AND PARADE
The major highlight and point of attraction at LDFA-2012 was Horse and Cattle Show. The major purpose of the Horse and Cattle Show was to provide a medium to showcase beautiful and rare species of Cattle and Horses available in Sindh.
More than 300 animals were brought into the event from various parts of the Province of Sindh.
The Horses and Cattles gathered huge attention from the visitors especially Families with Children.

BIRD SHOW
Another important component of LDFA-2012 was successful organization and execution of the Bird Show. Many rare species were displayed at the bird show that fascinated visitors and managed to become a major point of attraction.

FOOD COURT
Food Court was also organised at LDFA 2012 for providing healthy food facilities for visitors of the event. It was consist of stalls from major food vendors in Karachi at affordable prices.

CERTIFICATE & PRIZE DISTRIBUTION CEREMONY
LDFA 2012 ended with a graceful ceremony whereby Shields and Certificates along with cash prizes were distributed among stall exhibitors and participants of Cattle Show, Bird Show, Flower Exhibition, Dog & Pet Show etc.
The Chief Guest of the Certificate & Prize Distribution Ceremony was Honourable Mr. Zubair Motiwala, Chairman, Sindh Board of Investment. It was also attended by Mr. Younus Dagha, Secretary Investment & Coal & Energy Development Department. A wide number of people also attended the ceremony.
The ceremony started with projection of culture of Sindh through folk dance and Camel Dance followed by distribution of Prizes among following categories:

During the Address, Honourable Mr. Motiwala said that Globally, Agriculture, Livestock, Dairy, Poultry and Fisheries sectors are highly dynamic and evolving in response to rapidly increasing demand with unlimited potential for export and value addition.

He added that countries like United States, France, Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Italy, Belgium and Spain are major players/exporters of products in Agriculture and its sub sectors. He instilled that although Pakistan is an agriculture based economy but a wide gap lies between yield, productivity and export earning of Pakistan compare with other countries. Mr. Chairman told that there is a gap for Technological advancement, adaptation of efficient and effective methods of production, value addition and establishment of cold chains. He assure that he believe if technologically advanced methods for production and preservation will be adapted and replicated in Sindh than we would be able to earn our due share.
Mr. Motiwala appreciated the efforts of the Sindh Board of Investment and its team for making this event a profound success with huge turn over of visitors. He thanked participants, visitors and partners for their contribution and valuable input in the organization and execution of LDFA 2012.
