National Resources Centre for Supplementary Education (NRCSE)The NRCSE is now a registered charity, committed to supporting complementary schools to gain recognition andimprove quality so that complementary schools’ crucial role in supporting the educational attainment and well-being of children is valued and encouraged. They are currently re-writing How to Develop and Manage yourSupplementary Schools guides into a comprehensive handbook that will take you through the Quality Frameworkstep-by-step. This book will be given free to all complementary schools that become a member of NRCSE.

What can LCST do for your complementary school?Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks (previously CRB checks)The LCST arranges support for complementary schools to comply with the legislation and guidance for thecriminal disclosure of its staff and volunteers. These arrangements are competitively priced and, if possible, provided without charge.

InsuranceIt is essential that every complementary school has adequate insurance for their activities and accommodation. The LCST has arranged competitive cover for complementary schools that are members of the Trust.

Language teaching schoolsSome complementary schools exist specifically to help children and young people to learn communitylanguages. Leicester City Council is especially interested in helping these complementary schools and linkingthem with maintained schools so that the children and young people can obtain recognition for that learning.Currently, some complementary schools enter their students for GCSE exams in Gujarati, Polish, Arabic, etc inorder to support this.

The Leicester Complementary Schools Co-ordinator is the first point of contact for all the above aspects of theLCST.

Complementary Schools Mentoring

Complementary schools can access mentoring support for their management, teaching and learning, andgovernance.

Quality Framework Mentoring Programme

The Quality Framework is a voluntary quality recognition scheme which is independent, peer-assessed andself-regulated. It is run for and by complementary schools and those who support them. Complementary Schools should become a member of the National Resources Centre for Supplementary Education (NRCSE)which oversees the quality framework. Complementary schools can gain a Quality Framework Award atbronze, silver or gold level. These levels cover teaching and learning, governance and communityengagement.

The LCST can provide support to complementary schools which are interested in applying for a Bronze Levelaward in the form of mentoring and peer support.

Complementary Schools Development Hub

In order to improve the quality of complementary schools in and around Leicester, the LCST can also supportcomplementary schools in linking with maintained schools and accessing support for their teachers. Themaintained school (the ‘hub’ school) provides support to members of the hub such as shadowingopportunities, resource sharing, lesson planning, governance and policies and behaviour management. Thissupport is provided based on the individual complementary school’s needs. Currently there are four hubs andwe are aiming to create another four in the next academic year.

To access either type of mentoring or hub support please contact the Leicester Complementary Schools Co-ordinator or submit an online Request for Support Form via www.lcst.org.uk.
