Cpl Joshua Smith was promoted to Sgt Smith Dec. 1, 2006. Sgt Smith with-out any previous training or knowledge took the initiative to volunteer to operate a minesweeping flail unit (South African Mine Sweeping machine, not Marine Equipment) which required the constant supervision of an experienced operator to repair, that placed him in the direct view of the enemy and IED's to correct me-chanical problems.

When Sgt Smith was not volunteering for the critical missions he continued to lead from the front on missions that re-quired his Marines to be spread over a 1.5 kilometer area. He received Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his efforts.

Sgt Smith's abilities were sought out by the Marine Corps detachment Engineer Equipment Instructor Staff of Ft Leonard Wood, Missouri from May 2007 to June

2010. During his tenure as a Basic Engi-neer Equipment Instructor he instructed over 3500 hours of classroom curriculum to total teaching over 200 students while maintaining an equipment readiness greater than 95%. Sgt Smith also served as a faculty

development instructor. He received a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement for his efforts.

Sgt Smith and his wife Amanda could not stay the evening as guests of the Sheraton Cerritos Hotel because he had to report for duty at 4:30 a.m. the next day.

During Friday afternoon, they re-ceived a call from their son's school ad-vising that the boy was sick forcing them to leave before the CCPA performance Friday night.

The lodging and tickets are on hold until Sgt and Mrs. Smith can return to Cerritos, hopfullyin February.

Cerritos Elects to Serve as Successor Agency to Redevelopment AgencyBy Jerry Bernstein

The Cerritos City Council voted to serve as the “successor agency” to the Cerritos Redevelopment Agency that will be dissolved on Feb. 1 thanks to the new California Supreme Court decision ending more than 400 Redevelopment Agencies in the Golden State.

Cerritos, as the successor agency will oversee the responsibility of completing the CRA’s affairs and obligations, pre-pare various payment schedules and im-plement associated administrative tasks as required.

Assistant City Manager Kathy Mat-sumoto said this will allow the City to oversee the responsibility of completing the Agency’s affairs and obligations, pre-pare payment schedules, and implement administrative tasks associated with the dissolution of the Cerritos Redevelop-ment Agency.

At the same time the council ap-proved a resolution that Cerritos elects to retain the Agency’s housing assets and functions. These include, but are not limited to, the management of all resale transactions at Emerald Villas, Pioneer Villas, and Fountain Walk and will con-tinue monitoring the units to insure that they are sold to qualified low-income se-niors at affordable prices set forth by the State of California

In the meantime Cerritos, has filed a suit, in conjunction with 10 other cities, challenging the Supreme Court ruling in Superior Court in Sacramento. City Manager Art Gallucci said some 40 cit-ies have joined the lawsuit or filed simi-lar suits.

He said on Jan.4 the cities also filed a motion to stay the order dissolving the Redevelopment Agencies until such time as the new lawsuit is decided by the Su-perior Court.

Cerritos Mayor Carol Chen said, if the Supreme Court’s decision is not overturned, it will have a drastic effect on the city’s budget.

In other business the Council ap-proved the city’s agreement with the part-time bargaining unit., AFSCME Lo-cal 619, District Council 36 on Dec. 21. The agreement calls for a three-year pe-riod, covering July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2014. It provides for the re=opening of negotiations relative to wages only (to a maximum of three percent, if the lo-cal Consumer Price Index increases by a minimum of one percent as of Feb. 1, 2012 and 2013. New employees will pay the seven percent share of their pension plan, uniform allocations will increase from six to nine pieces for designated stage crew employees at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. and a payroll deduction will be made by em-ployees for a Union sponsored short-term disability policy.

The Council also approved a condi-tional use permit a chair massage ser-vices only in a center aisle common area in the Cerritos Center. Applying for the permit was spa owner Jie Jiang of Njoy Spa. Senior Planner Sandy Cisneros said that all massage therapists will be State of California Certified Massage Thera-pists, Owner Jie Jiang said she is hoping the small kiosk location will increase business in her regular massage location in the mall.

Halfway to their goal of a fund raising drive for the Department of Millers Children’s Hospital in Long Beach, Mary Button, owner-manager of It’s a Grind Coffee located. in the Ralph’s Shopping Center on the northwest corner of South Street and Carminita, said all the proceeds go directly to the Play Therapy Department at the hospital. She said 100 percent of the $5 purchase price for a plush toy goes to the department. Also, when a plush toy is purchased your name is entered into a drawing for a $25 It’s A Grind Gift Card. With her are helpers Krista Martinez and Levi Alikman.

To Achieve Great Accomplishments, We Must Have a Hardworking SpiritBy Jerry Bernstein

It had been s a quite morning when my Friend from Fruitcake, Florida . walked into the office. “How long are you going to be here?” I asked.

“Why do you want to know,? he re-sponded back. “

“No reason,” I said, knowing he had something on his mind.

“Tell me, “ he said, “what’s going on with all those shootings in Norwalk? It doesn’t bode well for the city.”

“It’s hard to tell,” I said. The city doesn’t appear to know what to make of it. It’s kind of like a case of the measles.

Once it starts it takes time to contain it and eventually eliminate it.”

“That’s fine,” he said. “Only this isn’t a case of the measles. People are being killed and not just on the street but in residential neighborhoods.”

“I’m sure Norwalk law enforcement officials are working to end it. They don’t like it anymore than the residents do..”

“Well, I guess your right,” he said. “we’ll see.” My Friend from Fruitcake, Florida paused. I could see he had anther subject he wanted to discuss. “How are things in Hawaiian Gardens?” he asked.

“”Right now everything is quiet.”“Is this the calm before a storm,” he

asked.“I don’t know. It could be. The next

council election isn’t until two years from now”

“Tell me, “ he asked. “What is the relationship between Hawaiian Gardens and say the city of Norwalk?”

“I’m not sure I understand.” I said.

“Well. Two candidates with question-able backgrounds were defeated in the recent city council race in Hawaiian Gar-dens. Councilmember Barry Bruce, pas-tor of the Way Out Ministries, and a dis-graced councilmember who hasn’t lived in Hawaiian Gardens since her recall ap-proximately 20 yeas ago, backed them..

“You’re talking about Kathy Nevejas. She clams she moved back to Hawaiian Gardens and is now a resident. She ap-parently bought a mobile home in the city.”

“And…”“All I’m saying is what she says is

her residence.”“My Friend from Fruitcake, Florida

looked at me. “Tell me, he said, “What’s her connection with Norwalk and its Chamber of Commerce?”

“That woman knows many people,” I answered. She’s affiliated in Norwalk at a local hospital. I’m sure she knows peo-ple connected with the Chamber. Why do you ask?”

“Just curious,” he replied.I’ve known my Friend from Fruit-

cake, Florida for a long time. He doesn’t make comment to make comment, but I could see he was done for now.

Who in Norwalk doesn’t like the cov-erage you gave the Hawaiian Gardens election? He asked.

“That’s a good question, but people have a right to their opinions,” I an-swered.

“Well I was just curious. I have t go. I’m meeting a friend for lunch in Los An-geles. He’s lived here a long time. We go back to the “Korean War.” With that he got up to leave. “See you soon,” he said,

“Wait a minute,” I said..” Why do you want to know about Hawaiian Gar-dens and Norwalk?”

He just looked at me and replied, Gotta be going.”

I Have A DreamCharlie Ara's article on Martin Luther

King's "I Have a Dream" speech was wonderful. To have been there during one of the most defining moments of the Civil Rights Movement is truly amazing. Our only problem with Charlie's article is the incorrect music reference. The song lyrics that were attributed to The Beatles were actually from the song "Get Together" by The Youngbloods. Sorry Charlie, as life long Beatle fans we just wanted to set the record straight (yes, pun intended).

'Obamacare' Discussed at Cerritos Optimist Meeting

Guest Speaker Dr. John Kim with Cerritos Optimist President Wayne Switzer at club’s breakfast meeting Jan. 12. Dr. Kim discussed medical care in the United States.

Dr. John Kim told members of the Cerritos Optimist Club said the United States spends more money for medical care than other countries.

He said benefits that have already kicked in under the law include children can remain on parents medical insurance to age 26, prohibits insurers from drop-ping policyholders who have preexisting conditions, no co-pay for office visits, and no lifetime limits on coverage. He said under current law Medicare stops covering the cost of prescriptions after

more than $2,830 has been spent. It starts paying again after individual out-of-pocket exceeds $4,500. Individuals af-fected by Part D [prescription] coverage, known as the Donut Hole. will receive $250 rebate per month with 50 percent of the gap having been eliminated in 2011. The entire gap will be closed by 2020. The Optimists meet the first, second and fourth Thursday at 7 a.m. and on the third Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Off Street Café across from Gahr High School.

I really need the “Better Than Great: A Plentitudinous Compendium of Wal-lopingly Fresh Superlatives” to do jus-tice to the dance performance of “River North Dance Chicago” at the Perform-ing Arts Center last weekend. There was a large crowd for the rather esoteric art of dance and they were treated to an eye-misting beautiful cast of 13 dancers who performed brilliant choreography, amidst astoundingly eclectic and memorable sounds with fall-to-your-knees lighting and costumes that lived up to all of that and more. Kudos are in order for artistic director Frank Chaves who must rehearse these young dancers into almost clari-fied perfection. Not only is the program packed with seven sensational pieces, it demands many extended segments involving the entire company moving in crisp harmony that takes your breath away but never seems to tire the young performers.

The dancers got the audience up on the edge of their seats at the starting gate of “Evolution of a Dream” with the lyri-cal introduction building into the driving beat of the Eurhythmics “Sweet Dreams” which seemed to inspire a high-energy synchronicity that just sent endorphin-impulses throughout the entire hall. The plain velour costumes were spot-on for a work focusing on a blend of dance clubs and modern dance. Dancer Ahmad Sim-mons provided a counter-point to the ensemble dominated first segment with “Beat.” His graceful and expressive solo was a lesson in graceful control and anat-omy. The lighting here as throughout the entire performance was essential in creat-ing a memorable scene. “Sentir em Nos” was something completely different with an operatic sounding Portuguese song danced by the couple whose precise part-ner work demanded that they never actu-ally separate from one another. Michael Gross was a standout here and through-out. Appropriately “Even for Us” was the most romantic piece on a program filled with passion and love. A four-part tribute to the music of Miles Davis finished the first half and it was nothing but a home run, touching all the bases with grace and classic style.

The second half broke in a different direction but once more with the indus-trial-techno pure percussion throb of “Le Tambours du Bronx” (a Cerritos show

Glen, I don’t know what you were watch-ing or listening to, but we saw no problem with any part of the Canadian Tenors Concert. You certainly blasted them in your review.

It seems the entire audience, including my 95-year old mother, Marie Rosenberg of Carols Gift Shop, was thrilled from start to finish. The tenors voices were all strong and blended beautifully. The idea to showcase each singer was terrific.

There were many standing ovations and cheers., more than any show we’ve attended in several seasons. Mom said she thought they even rivaled IL Divol, not to mention they are easy on the eyes and were very sweet and ap-proachable during the meet and greet period.

We gave them an A+ and can’t wait to see them again.

River North Dance Chicago a Discourse in Perfectiononce upon a time) in “The Train.” The performance moved toward absolutely explosive energy and joyous movement with a solo within the piece by Hanna Brictson that defied superlatives. When the drumming ceased there were more than a few open mouths in the audience whispering to no one in particular “wow.” This was followed by the sweetly lyrical and gentle duet of “Fixe” with its whim-

sical score and ingenious eco-camouflage costumes.

The grand finale was an absolute feast of grand classical Cuban dance music. With brilliantly colored and designed costumes the company moved with more of balletic style but with such sensual de-light that the entire six songs were an in-toxicating concoction of dance nectar.

The music was cleverly mixed be-

tween the vintage smoothness of Mor-ton Gould’s Orchestra and Percy Faith spiced by the passionately earthy vocals of Carlos Puebla and Omara Portuondo. The dancers superbly executed choreog-raphy to this “Habaneras, the Music of Cuba” was dreamy, evocative, bountiful and very beautiful. If the director Chavez dedicated this piece to his father he has done him a great honor.

Shooting on Thistle Avenue in Norwalk Leaves One Man Dead, Another InjuredBy Randy Economy

A Cypress man was shot and killed early Sunday morning in Norwalk in an incident that has also left one man injured. At around 1 a.m. gunshots rang out in the 13600 block of Thistle Avenue, according to law enforcement officials.

Lt. Bale with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office told Los Cerritos Com-munity News that the victim has been identified as Ernie Joseph Salgado, age 41. Salgado died from gunshot wounds at an area hospital.

After the shooting, the two were apparently inside a van and managed to drive away from the scene and stopped and flagged down a passing Sheriff’s pa-trol unit who was in the area at the time.

The location of the shooting took place less than six blocks from the Nor-walk Sheriff’s Station near Bloomfield Avenue and Foster Road.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.

To the surprise of many local observers, Cerritos City Council-man Joseph Cho has taken the

first step to be a candidate for the United States House of Representatives in the newly drawn 39th District.

Los Cerritos Community News can confirm that Cho, who is in the middle of his second four year term on the Cerritos City Council, was issued “sig-nature in lieu” of papers from the Los

Angeles County Registrar of Voters Of-fice in Norwalk on Tuesday afternoon.

The 39th Congressional District includes Hacienda Height, Rowland Heights, Diamond Bar, Chino Hills, Yorba Linda, Brea, Buena Park, Fuller-ton and Placentia. Cerritos is not in the newly drawn district, but Federal law allows for residents to run for Congress

in a district that they do not necessarily reside in.

Cho will be facing Jay Chen, a school board member from Hacienda Heights, who is also well connected in Democratic party politics.

Los Cerritos Community News will have additional details on our website at www.loscerritosnews.net.

Grant Program. In 2011 588 solar panels was in-

stalled by SunWize Technologies atop the second water reservoir generating approximately 203,000 kilowatt hours per year approximately the amount of energy consumed by 27 households an-nually. The $725,959 project was funded through a $280,600 grant from the De-partment of Energy with the balance paid by the City,

Congresswoman Linda Sanchez complimented Cerritos for being in the forefront of clean energy and its exten-sive and innovative green programs not only on the use of solar energy, but recy-cling programs and the use of alternative fuels. She said if more cities followed Cerritos lead the country could reduce its dependency on foreign oil. she would continue her help in funding future green programs by the city.. “I’m proud Cer-ritos has taken leadership in this area,” she stated.

Seb Wallace with Martifer Solar said he was glad to see Cerritos take advan-tage of the government program. He said the money the city saves by not having to purchase energy from the public utilities can be used for other programs.

Brian Kaltsas with Sun Wize agreed with his colleague and said he was proud to be part of Cerritos march to green en-ergy.

The Cerritos High School Band who is slated to go to London, England to play in the Summer Olympics provided enter-tainment. The Mayor urged the commu-nity to support the band’s efforts to meet the trip’s expenses.

Presiding over his last meeting as President of the Artesia Chamber

of Commerce, James Kang told the 150 members and guests attending the Chambers Second Annual Installation of Officers held at the Portuguese Hall in Artesia the past two and a half years of his term of office have gone by so rapidly that he didn’t know where to begin.

“When we started, the economic climate was dark. We planted a seed, and then watered it to make a sprout. It grew a root and a stem. The seed is now a fine tree with lots of branches. The Chamber officers and board members have worked together so wholeheartedly that our Chamber can provide business people with hopes and dreams that we can do better in the future. “

said, “Although the Chamber is relatively young and small we were able to host a Business EXPO along with our partners and sponsors to deliver a strong message to the business community that we are here to serve you. “

He concluded by saying he appreciated the support of all the sponsors who made holding the Business EXPO a success and the support of the City of Artesia, Artesia City Council members, and the City Manager in helping the growth of the Artesia Chamber of Commerce.

Supervisor Don Knabe thanked Kang and the outgoing Board of Directors for their service to the community, describing Artesia as really being a family community He said 75 percent of all new jobs in Los Angeles County are provided by small business. “Your [chamber] members play an important

role in our economy.”Newly sworn in President Manu Patel

said, “Last year was a big milestone for the Chamber. We hosted luncheons and mixers on a monthly basis plus held the Business Expo that was a big success. “ He said in 2012 the Chamber will be publishing a monthly news letter and work to promote “our” small businesses. He thanked everyone for their support and looked forward to the coming year.

Artesia Mayor Pro Tem Sally Flowers said, “We are so happy the Chamber is well and thriving. Keep up the good work.”

Certificates of Recognition from Assemblyman Tony Mendoza, State Senator Alan Lowenthal, Congresswoman Linda Sanchez and the City of Artesia were also presented to the Chamber.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe gave the oath of office to the 2012-13 officers at the Artesia Chamber of Commerce Sec-ond Annual Installation Dinner. They are: President, Manu Patel; Vice President Elizabeth Makabali; Treasurer Don Brown; Secretary Lou Trerotola and Boardmembers Felix Lopez, Immediate Past President James Kang, Dinesh Gandhi, Parimal Shah. Lana Leazer, Bill Lee and Dr. Doo Youn Hwang.

ARTESIA CHAMBER HOLDS ANNUAL INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS

Supervisor Don Knabe presents outgo-ing President James Kang a Certificate of Recognition on behalf of the Los Angeles Country Board of Supervisors in recogni-tion of his 18 months service as Artesia Chamber President. “You should be very proud of what you and your Board of Di-rectors have accomplished,” Knabe stated.

of the Planning Commission that would have transformed a previously used vet-eran’s hall as well as two other dilapi-dated parcels into a new multiuse facility that would have been able to accommo-date over 300 patrons during any one performance.

The project was slated for the corner of Funston Avenue and Front Street, an area that was once considered the “fo-cal point” of Norwalk dating back in the late 1800’s. Since then, Front Street has withered into a virtual ghost town with some businesses being left vacant and unmaintained for years. It is currently being used by several Hollywood enter-tainment production facilities in different “period-era” pieces.

Norwalk City Councilmen Leon-ard Shyock and Marcel Rodarte led the charge to overturn the planning commis-sion decision made this past December by both claiming the project would “literally transform Front Street” into a “thriving entertainment” and “destination loca-tion” that would have translated into the creation of more than 35 new jobs, and produced at least $60,000 to $100,000 in new revenue for the cities coffers.

A recent California State Supreme Court ruling eliminated all municipal redevelopment agencies beginning on Feb. 1, and many cities are scrambling for private investors and developers that can provide the resources to boost the areas sagging economy. Many financial experts believe that the current recession could continue to grip California for at least the next two to three years, if not longer.

Hernandez told Los Cerritos Commu-nity News that he purchased the three “di-lapidated” parcels at a recent foreclosure auction at a nearby superior courthouse. “This property was the perfect location for a project of this magnitude,” he said. “When I first saw and visited Front Street, all I could think about was potential, and how our development could transform this entire area,” Hernandez said.

The proposed establishment would have been opened to the public five days a week (closed Monday’s and Tuesday’s) and feature Hacienda style motif.

The sticking point of the develop-ment rested on available parking spaces, and not about the type of business.

Hernandez formally requested the Norwalk City Council provide a “vari-ance” that specifically dealt with parking space requirements. Hernandez said that his proposal would provide for 86 park-ing spaces, but the city required that at

least another hundred additional spaces be found around Funston and Front Street.

Hernandez pointed out that many businesses have been vacant on Front Street “for decades” and was looking to the city council to provide “a solution” and to “meet him half way” in being able to resolve the parking space require-ment.

Robert Kuzman, a parking consultant on behalf of Hernandez, said that the im-mediate area around the proposed facil-ity currently uses “only 23%” of the total amount of parking spaces. “Would Front Street be better off having this new facil-ity, or should it just remain the same?” Hernandez asked the city council.

Jerry Ori, long time Norwalk City Council critic, asked the council to “work with” and to “help get the additional parking spaces.” “Can the city council work with this developer?”

Councilman Rodarte, who cam-paigned on a platform of bringing new development to Front Street, said that “in this current environment, we need some-thing and someone who has both the in-terest and resources to help us transform Front Street, once and for all.”

Vice Mayor Cherrie Kelley, a long time realtor in the area said that Front Street was “not the right location” for a project of this magnitude. She said she would be glad to show Hernandez around Norwalk for other “possible locations” that would be more “appropriate.” This is in direct conflict to Hernandez statement to LCCN that the Vice Mayor was “unap-proachable, lacked interest, and showed no interest in discussing or reviewing the matter prior to the meeting.

Rodarte even asked his city council colleagues to do an “annual parking re-view” as part of the terms of the condi-tions in order for the project to “move forward.” He even went as far as telling Kelley and Mendez that “no one could open a business on Front Street with the current type of parking restrictions we have in place, period.”

City Manager Mike Egan agreed with Rodarte that the parking requirements could be revisited and “looked into.”

“We need life on Front Street,” Shy-ock plead. “Without redevelopment, we need projects like this and when business-men want to do business, and we need to grab a hold of these opportunities.”

Rodarte said he believed this “partic-ular business would be a magnet.” “This

will bring jobs, and be a source of pride to our community. I look at it as a God-send,” said Shyock.

Rodarte questioned Planning Direc-tor Kurt Anderson when the last time a project was built on Front Street and it was five years ago. Rodarte even tried to get the project approved without the use of a dance floor, and to look for ad-ditional parking for the future. Shyock supported Rodarte, the motion failed and the project was denied.

Councilman Luigi Vernola, could not participate in the discussion since he owns property within 500 feet of the pro-posed project on Front Street.

“I have done business all over the world, and I have never been treated so poorly,” Hernandez told LCCN. “I listened about the importance of bring-ing new businesses to Norwalk, and it is obvious that they really don’t mean what they say,” Hernandez said. Mayor Mendez, this is going to be a big plus to Norwalk, “but parking is my biggest concern. Nothing else like it here in the entire area. The hard part is if we support this, if anyone else wants to come into Front Street and we will have to tell them that there is no parking available for their business.”

Mendez ended up siding with Kelley and voted to uphold the planning com-mission denial of the project. Kelley said this “is a great idea, but the wrong location.” “If we give a variance to you, then we won’t have any parking spaces left for future businesses. It isn’t fair that we give all the parking today to just one business development.”

Kelley also said that she “wished that they had this conversation before” Her-nandez purchased the property. “It sad-dens me, but as they say in real estate, location, location, location, and this is just the wrong location,” Kelley stated. In reviewing the area, LCCN found two viable parking areas within a quarter mile of the venue. Both could be leased out and used for valet service, much like other premier restaurant locations offer.

After the vote, a dejected Hernandez told LCCN that “Norwalk isn’t about bringing new business to the commu-nity, it is about job killing. I will never do business in Norwalk, and am going to let my feelings be known to everyone I come in contact with.”

Hernandez said he was “dismayed” by the vote and singled out Kelley’s vote. “She (Kelley) isn’t here to create jobs, she is only here to create rules and be a job cremator.” When asked what he plans to do with the property he purchased for the project he said “for the time being noth-ing.”

“I will probably just let the land sit vacant,” he said.

The city attorney answered the over-sight board will have the authority to transfer property to the agency that is using it. In Those properties that were built with Housing Funds, would be transferred to the city.

The city attorney said the bonds sold to finance the various projects built by the Agency and which will be paid off by tax increment.”

Councilmember Reynaldo Rodri-guez inquired who would make up the oversight board of seven individuals. Sandoval replied one member would be appointed by the Los Angeles County Supervisors, one member appointed by the Mayor, one member by the largest special district within the area served by the former redevelopment agency.

He said this could include the ABC Unified School District or the Los An-geles County Fire Department plus a member appointed by the Chancellor of the California Community Colleges, one named by the County Board of Su-pervisors, and one member representing the employees of the successor agency appointed by the mayor from the largest

recognized employee organization. He stated by staying in the role of the Suc-cessor Agency would provide a greater level of control over the transactions un-der city jurisdiction.

Stop Signs ApprovedIn other business the council ap-

proved the installation of stop signs on Wardham Avenue and 22nd Street and the painting of 15 feet of red curb approaching the intersection and 10 ft. of red curb leaving the intersection of Wardham Avenue and 22nd Street. The initial proposal was to put in speed bumps, but that was dropped because of possible liability issues.

Councilman Bruce asked what was the status of his request for a cross-walk on Centralia on the west side and the signal light on Norwalk and 223rd Street Community Development Direc-tor Joe Colombo said the Norwalk and 223rd St would be on the council’s next agenda.

Trash pickup in the Hawaiian Gar-dens Mobile Estates on Carson Avenue was questioned by a member of the au-dience who said residents in the park did not have trash bins like everyone else in the city. She said seniors living in the park have to drag plastic bags to the street and drag broken trash cans down their driveways, They should have the same trash cans and or bins as everyone

else living in the city.Rodriguez suggest a survey be made

of other mobile home parks to see how they handle trash pickups. Mayor Mike Gomez said he had met with represen-tative of the trash company two weeks prior to the council meeting and was told one of the issues was their trucks are to large for the park’s streets. He said they would be looking at smaller vehicles to pick up the trash and would work with the city to resolve the problem. Turning to the complaint about the food service for senior lunches, he said to his knowl-edge no complaints have been made. “I never heard about this. I think we have to investigate it.”

Bruce also expressed surprise and said this was the first time he has heard complaints about the senior lunches. We should look into it. He also said he would like staff to look into the lack of cable television at the mobile home park and t not having Internet access.

Mayor pro tem Victor Farfan thanked those community members who spoke up at the meeting for bringing their con-cerns to the council’s attention. “We need to hear from people so we can take action on your concerns.” He said he believes a survey should be done with the seniors who participate in the senior lunches and get their comments about the food and program.

John Glenn’s boys basketball team was four minutes away from posting one of its biggest wins in

school history last Friday evening against Artesia. But the Pioneers ended the game on a 10-4 run and rallied to escape with a 73-69 victory.

The Eagles, who have now lost at least 29 straight games to the Pioneers, held a two-point lead after three quarters. But minus senior Santiago Fajardo, the team’s second leading scorer, the Pioneers got balanced scoring from four of their starters including career-highs from senior Eddie Lindsey (18 points) and junior Alex Hart

(16 points).Despite the loss, the Eagles set a couple

of scoring milestones that is not synony-mous with Glenn boys basketball. The fi-nal scoring total marked just the fifth time in the past 29 meetings that the Eagles have scored at least 60 points against Arte-sia. Also, senior Daryl Almirol recorded a career-high 31 points, only the fourth time in the past 15 seasons that a Glenn boys player had scored at least 30 points. The last time came on Dec. 16, 2003 when Lui-gi Pardini scored 30 against Whitney.

“Daryl is what’s going to make this team go,” said Glenn first-year head coach Barry Migliorini. “Not just from the scor-ing, but setting up other players. I don’t think we’ve seen the best from Daryl. I know he had a good game and I think as he gets in better shape, he’s going to hit his stride.”

After a 19-19 first quarter, the Pioneers (6-12 overall, 2-3 in the Suburban League) went on a tear and scored 24 second quar-ter points. Artesia was eight of 20 from the field and the team had 14 rebounds in the second quarter. At the half, the visitors held a 14-point lead.

“We really didn’t get scoring out of our half-court,” said Artesia head coach Greg Taylor. “There really wasn’t any type of rhythm. It was just hustle. We had to em-phasize for them to hustle, get the offen-sive rebounds, get some touches, get some steals, get up the floor and get some lay-ups. They all just kind of did that, not con-sistent, but enough to pull off the win.”

But Glenn (3-17, 1-5) returned the fa-vor in the third quarter thanks to Almirol and some long range shooting from other players. Almirol scored nine points in the

stanza while sophomore Ardale Encabo sank a pair of three-pointers and senior Jo-mar Purisima and sophomore Erich Webb each added one. A free throw from Webb with 20 seconds left in the quarter tied the game and a basket from Almirol early in the fourth gave Glenn its first lead since it was 17-9.

“We realized that every single one of their points came in the paint,” Migliorini said. “So we switched from a man [defense] to a real tight zone. We decided we would give up the outside shot to them and just not let them score anymore in the paint.”

The Eagles extended their lead on a basket from senior Robert King (nine points, nine rebounds) before Artesia tied the game with 5:31 on a free throw from ju-nior Jeremy Tablada. Artesia went to a 2-3 defense in the fourth quarter and limited Glenn to only four field goals, half of them coming within the first 91 seconds of the stanza. The Pioneers would take the lead for good with 3:10 remaining on a Lindsay basket and iced the game 31 seconds later when Lindsay scored off a turnover.

“I think that got them out of their rhythm a little bit,” Taylor said. “We didn’t allow their guards to get looks.”

The key to both teams in the fourth quarter was the free throw shooting-Arte-sia was eight of 20 while Glenn was three of nine.

“We didn’t execute our free throws and we didn’t box-out,” Migliorini said. “It’s the fundamentals of basketball and it falls back on myself as the head coach because those are things that the coaching staff needs to make sure are being executed.”

Senior James Floyd added 17 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Pioneers while senior Cameron McGlothen scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Hart led everyone with 14 boards.

Despite its record, Glenn still feels it can reach the playoffs for the first time since 2000, the longest current playoff drought of the seven league teams. Enter-ing this past week, Glenn was a game and a half behind Artesia for the fourth and final automatic spot.

“This is a team that should and could get hot and still find its way into the play-offs,” Migliorini said. “That’s what we talked about tonight. We’re letting it slip away but if we grab a hold of this season, it’s still our season.”

Pioneers, sans Avila, vault into second place despite ugly win

Any Suburban League girls basketball head coach will tell you that the league is down this season, and the scores of some the games will back that up. Last Friday evening, Artesia scored only 34 points but it was good enough to beat Glenn by 10

points. It was the second lowest scoring league game this season, both involving Glenn. The Lady Eagles have been held to under 30 points in five of their last six games.

“It’s one of many [ugly games] that I’ve coached this season,” said John Glenn head coach Linda Parra. “Yes, it was an ugly game. There was no energy.”

Artesia (8-12 overall, 3-2 in league) struggled again at the line, connecting on 11 of 27 charity shots, and made only 11 field goals. But seniors Dana Arrington and Paige Culpepper stepped up and paced the Pioneers. Arrington had seven points, 13 rebounds and eight steals while Culpep-per led everyone with 14 points and nine rebounds.

“To be honest, I don’t know [how we won],” said Artesia head coach Lonnie Hinchen. “We were missing a lot of free throws but I just knew that our girls were stronger with Dana and Paige being active as they were. I thought we had the [re-bounding] edge. Our size and our experi-ence pulled us through.”

Glenn (8-12, 1-5) thought it would have a slight advantage because Artesia was missing its starting point guard, junior Angie Avila, who leads the team in scor-ing. But the Lady Eagles couldn’t capital-ize because they were turning the ball over almost every time down the court. When they weren’t, the Lady Eagles were shoot-ing 17 percent from the field.

“To lose by 10 when their starting point guard is out is unbelievable,” Parra said. “The girls could tell you the same thing. The same thing happened against Norwalk. They had their best two out and we still don’t capitalize.”

“Angie is a dynamic player but we need her every step of the way,” Hinchen said. “Glenn is sort of rebuilding right now, so we’re just fortunate. I can’t see us knocking off Norwalk and Mayfair without Angie, or even La Mirada and particularly Cerritos, which is a high pressure, full court team. Angie is a very, very essential part of our team.”

Glenn held a slim 7-3 lead after the first quarter but Artesia went into the halftime break up 12-11 as Culpepper scored off an offensive rebound with 48 seconds remain-ing. Artesia began to pull away early in the fourth quarter when sophomore Kaylah Vesi hit a three-pointer seven seconds in.

Glenn drew to within five points with 4:14 left in the game but managed only six shots the rest of the way, four of them com-ing from behind the three-point arc. Glenn was led by senior Moshannae Summerise (14 points, six rebounds, four steals). Sophomore Dominique Gomez, in just her

By Loren Kopff

It’s been nine seasons and six head coaches since the Gahr girls soc-cer team has been to the playoffs.

But after three San Gabriel Valley League games, the Gladiators are in a position to end that postseason drought.

Senior midfielder Alyssa Ruddle scored in the 55th minute and Gahr held on to de-feat Dominguez 1-0 this past Tuesday af-ternoon. The Gladiators improved to 5-9-2 overall and 1-1-1 in league action. Heading into today’s home game with Lynwood, the Gladiators are tied for third place with Warren and two points behind co-league leaders Downey and Lynwood.

Of the 14 games the team has played (two others were forfeit victories), Gahr has scored only five goals but been in-volved in eight 1-0 decisions. The team is still looking for its first multiple-goal game and has some incentive for that. First-year head coach Anna Steffen has promised the team In-N-Out if they score three goals in a game.

“I think it’s been one of our biggest challenges, just to put it in the net,” Stef-fen said. “It’s something we’ve been really focusing on in our practices. I was proud of the girls in this game. We had way more shots on net than in the beginning of the season. I’m hoping that this will be a trend; that we can continue to put it in the net bet-ter and better.”

Gahr’s win was the first on the field victory since Dec. 2 against Whitney and

from the way it played in the first half, it was looking more like a scoreless tie could happen. Gahr took only four shots on goal to two from the Dons. Three of those shots came within the first 13 minutes. In fact, the only excitement out of the first 40 min-utes came when two Gahr players were issued yellow cards in a four-minute span because of jewelry issues.

“In the first half, they were coming in not as hard as I’ve seen them play by far,” Steffen said. “I always tell them one of the most things I’m proud of them is their in-tensity and how hard they go to the ball and they’ll win those 50-50 balls, especially in the middle.”

Gahr turned up the intensity immediate-ly in the second half when Ruddle lobbed a shot towards an open net two minutes in, but the ball barely went off to the left side. In the 47th minute, senior forward Leah Wilkins took advantage of a defensive mis-take but her shot went high above the net. A minute later, freshman midfielder Karin-na Gomez sent a pass to senior midfielder Araceli Ayala but her shot also sailed to the left. And in the 54th minute, a free kick from sophomore defender Nathaly Lopez went off to the left side.

A minute later, Ruddle ended the score-less tussle as she took a pass from Gomez and worked her way through the penalty box before squeaking the ball inside the left post. It was the first goal of the season for the transfer from Cerritos High.

“She’s been one that we’ve been dying for her to get a goal,” Steffen said. “One of

her challenges has been to play with that left. She did it today. She wants to transfer to her right and get that perfect shot. That’s been something that we’ve been hammer-ing into their heads; that they can’t always wait for that perfect right footed hammer shot. You have to take what you get and she put it in with her left today.”

A chance to move into second place is on the line for Gahr today with last place Dominguez hosting Downey. Gahr will then visit Warren on Tuesday to end the first round of league action.

third start this season, had 10 rebounds.“Number one, we’re not good shoot-

ers,” Parra said. “Number two, we turn the ball over way too much. Tonight we had 31 turnovers. We shot the ball 53 times and we shot 17 percent from the field. Our shoot-ing percentage is horrible, but then we turn the ball over 31 times. That comes from them being young and inexperienced. It’s hard playing this poorly when you’re used to playing at a level higher than this.”

Artesia is already off to its best start since the 2008-2009 season when it fin-ished 8-16. That was also the last time the Pioneers advanced to the playoffs. The sea-son before that was the last time the pro-gram posted double digit victories.

“One of my visions was to prepare our girls to go through some real, hard tough games,” Hinchen said. “Our strength is our toughness. I knew I was going to be in the middle of the pack and that’s where we’re trying to stay. But at the same time, I’m looking forward to next week with Nor-walk and then Mayfair.”

Both Artesia teams lost to host Nor-walk this past Wednesday and will be home to league leading Mayfair tonight. On Wednesday, Artesia will visit Bellflower to open the second round of league play.

“Most of the teams [in league] are pretty balanced,” Hinchen said. “I think on a given night, anyone can beat anyone. There are going to be ugly games but who-ever can grit it out is going to get the vic-tory.”

Both Glenn teams lost to visiting La Mirada this past Wednesday and will be home to Cerritos on Wednesday.

CERRITOS SHERIFF’S STATIONWeekly Crime SummaryJanuary 9-15, 2012

25 Part I felony investigations were

conducted by members of the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station last week, up ten cases from the last reporting period. Commercial burglaries, vehicle burglaries, and vehicle thefts increased while robberies remained the same. Residential burglaries declined. There were 270 calls for service handled by patrol deputies, up from 261 the week before. The 2012 weekly average in calls for service is 265.

There was one robbery. Two male suspects produced handguns and robbed a man working in his driveway in the 18800 block of Christina Avenue. This crime occurred on Sunday January 15 at 8:17 a.m. Cash was taken.

Residential burglaries dropped from six to four last week. Three of the recent crimes were made possible by open/doors or windows. In the fourth incident, a side garage door was kicked in. Property reported taken included jewelry and tools. The 2012 weekly average in residential burglaries is now 5.0

We always remind residents that conducting an “exit check” prior to leaving the home is an essential crime prevention tool. Make sure that all of the doors and windows are secured and make it more difficult for a burglar to victimize you.

Commercial/“other structure” burglaries increased from one to three last week. All of the crime scenes last week involved closed businesses. A lock was cut on one, and the entry point of two adjacent businesses could not be determined. Drills, stamps, cash, and vehicle parts were stolen. The new 2012 weekly average in commercial/“other structure” burglaries is 2.0.

Vehicle burglaries increased from four to eight last week. Five vehicles were in high-volume commercial parking lots, and five were SUVs. Coin trays, laptop computers, an ice-maker, miscellaneous paperwork, purses, cell phones, and a GPS unit were reported missing. The new 2012 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 6.0.

A quarter of an inch of glass is hardly the protection you need to avoid becoming a victim of a vehicle burglary. Protect your property by securing all items in the trunk or taking them with you. There is truth to the old saying “out of sight, out of mind”.

Vehicle thefts rose from one to eight last week. Seven were removed from high-volume commercial parking lots. Four were SUVs. Other vehicles stolen were an Acura, a Toyota, a VW, and a commercial trailer. The new 2012 weekly average in vehicle thefts is 4.5.

The best method to immediately display that your vehicle is protected from theft is the use of a visible deterrent such as a steering wheel lock. This inexpensive “insurance policy” can cost between $30-$50, and tells the commonly pressed for

time thief that another target would be more appealing. This is especially important if you own an 80’s or 90’s model Honda or Toyota.
