This months recap of the Schmooze aPalooza

was contributed by Jack Duncan of RadianceRoad Marketing. Jack first wrote about the

event on his blog, which you can read atradianceroadmarketing.com.

Today, I attended my first Lakeland AreaChamber of Commerce SchmoozeaPalooza and I am so glad I did! Thispower networking event, held at FloridaSouthern College in the Eleanor SearleDrawing Room, brought together about50 of Lakelands shakers and movers topromote our businesses to sell the sizzle and enjoy lunchtogether.

We gathered in the elegant drawing room

on the architecturally-awesome FSCcampus about 11:30 this morning where abuffet of salad, grilled chicken, roast beef, pasta and steamed veggies awaited us. Istarted building my power for the eventwith some cheese and crackers whilemeeting some of my fellow LakelandChamber members and staff many forthe first time since I am a fairly newmember. Editors note: FSCs food serviceis provided by Guest Services, a fellowChamber member.

Jessica Gutowski, standing-in for All-Solars Dillon Daniels, joined me at mytable since we already knew each otherfrom another event. Sitting to my right

was Adam Baust of the Welborn Com-panies Administrative Service

Offerings, who is openinga new branch here

    in Lakeland

to help local businesses with theiraccounting, payroll and tax matters.KeiserUniversitys Director of StudentServices Ryan Reis joined us as well, andwe got to talk about helping students

develop practical business experiencethrough internship and portfoliodevelop-ment with Lakeland companies. I taughtat [then] Keiser College in Melbourne, FLand am reallyexcited about mentoringlocal students.

At the Schmooze a Palooza, eachattendee gets to stand up and give a 30-second elevator-pitch for their businessto the crowd. Its a great way to hone yourpresentation skills! I enjoyed watching myfellowChamber members give their

pitches. The event gave me a chance tohear local enterprises marketing messagesand get to know some of the people thatare active in the business community. Itsa real whirl to go through almost 50marketing pitches in less than an hour! Inthe marketing world, you are competingagainst so many messages for attention

and to gain interest in about half aminute. YOU GOTTA MAKE ITSIZZLE!

As a local internet marketing consultant, I

analyze marketing messages for a living. As a prospective consumer, I want toknow whats in it for me as quickly aspossible. This was a wonderful way to takea look at what I do and how I presentmy business to prospects. After all, my jobis to get your BEST prospects to visit yourwebsite and BUY your products andservices. I had better be able to deliver aclear, compelling message myself!

If youd like a few tips you can use todevelop or hone your 30-second elevator

pitch email me and Ill get those out toyou. It really is a vital skill for anyone whoneeds to explain what your business does.Ill be working on my elevator pitch tomake the best impression to makeit sizzle at ALL of the events andencounters here in Lakeland this year.
