No Kid Hungry Share Our Strength

The No Kid Hungry National Outreach Program is a charity to help raise awareness and promote activism in helping to end child hunger. The organization started in 1984 and since that time has earned over $400 thousand to put toward the fight, including putting money toward school breakfasts and summer meals. Investors in the No Kid Hungry project range from private investors to government officials and work to break down the barriers that keep kids from healthy food.

Education and Awareness For our project specifically, we went to the Tonganoxie Elementary School to teach the kids about healthy after school snack choices. This consisted of teaching them how to read nutrition labels and giving them healthy recipes to try at home. We brought in the ingredients for trail mix and let them make their own using different combinations of each component. For kids with allergies, we brought in fresh fruit for an alternative. In addition we taught the kids some stretches and exercises just to extend the healthy lifestyle we were teaching.

Here we have Allie telling everyone how to make a well rounded fruit salad. Ours included apples, oranges, bananas, grapes, strawberries and blackberries – all full of healthy vitamins and minerals.

Community Service and Awareness

In addition to teaching the fourth grade about healthy choices we also did a trick-or-treat for canned goods in October. We went to three different neighborhoods throughout Tonganoxie, including both of ours. All the goods we received from our neighbors were turned into our local food pantry. In total we brought in about 125 canned goods and non perishables.

Funding Our funding came from various fundraisers throughout the Tonganoxie FCCLA program. We sold Tonganoxie t-shirts and trash bags. To the right we have the design of the shirt we sold.

We made a total of $6,321.00 during our t-shirt sale. Some of this money went to the chapter and some went to supplies for our project.

TRASHBAGS

Selling trash bags we made $2,526.00. Again, some of this money went to the chapter and then some for our project.
