The Layers of Earth’s Atmosphere

The Troposphere

The lowest layer of Earth’s Atmosphere…. The TROPOSPHERE-The Troposphere is the lowest layer of the atmosphere, and makes up about 75-80% of Earth’s atmosphere.- The Troposphere is where all of Earth’s weather occurs.- The higher you go up the Troposphere, the colder it gets. The air also gets thinner as you travel upward of the Troposphere.

-Most clouds are at the Troposphere because nearly all of the water vapor and dust particles in the atmosphere are in the Troposphere.- At the top of the Troposphere, there is a place called the Tropopause, where temperature starts rising again.

The Stratosphere

The layer containing the ozone layer….The STRATOSPHERE

-The Stratosphere is the layer in Earth’s atmosphere, which contains the Ozone Layer.- The Stratosphere’s Ozone Layer absorbs ultraviolet light from the sun.- The Stratosphere is located beneath the Mesosphere, but on top of the Troposphere.

-As you move up the Stratosphere, temperature increases, which is the exact opposite of what happens in the Troposphere. - The Stratosphere is the second lowest layer out of all of Earth’s atmospheric layers.- Without the Stratosphere’s Ozone Layer, harmful radiation from the sun would reach Earth.

The Mesosphere

The layer where meteorites burn up…. The MESOSPHERE - The Mesosphere is the third lowest layer in Earth’s atmosphere, and this is where meteorites burn up, before they reach Earth.-As you go higher up the Mesosphere, the temperature decreases.

-At the top of the Mesosphere, temperatures may go as low as -100° C.-The Mesosphere is located on top of the Stratosphere, but below the Thermosphere.- The orbits of satellites are above the Mesosphere, but weather balloons and jet planes cannot reach high enough to enter the Mesosphere.- There are air waves in the Mesosphere, and most of the air in the Mesosphere is caused by those waves.- The Mesosphere starts at about 31 miles above Earth, and goes up to 53 miles high.

The Thermosphere

The layer above the Mesosphere… The THERMOSPHERE-The Thermosphere is one of the upper layer s of the atmosphere. It also includes the exosphere, and ionosphere. The exosphere is above it, and the ionosphere is below.- Aurora Borealis occurs in the Thermosphere, charged particles emit photons of light which forms the aurora. - Temperatures climb sharply in the lower portion of the Thermosphere. Temperatures in the upper Thermosphere can range from about 932 °F- 3,652 °F or even higher! Even so, you would not feel the heat.

-The Thermosphere has no definite outer limit, but it gradually blends into space. Since, it is the outermost layer in all of Earth’s atmosphere.- Some satellites orbit from within the Thermosphere.- In the Thermosphere, the main components of air are: Atomic oxygen, atomic nitrogen, and helium.
