I had the awesome opportunity to walk and talk with “Mary”, or at least that is who I will call her in this story. As I walked and talked with Mary, I realized how fast the world moves by, and some people are not able to keep up. Our conversation led her to say, “Please go ahead of me, for I cannot walk any faster and I do not want to hold you up any longer than necessary”. My response to her was, “don’t worry, I am fine with slowing down and enjoy-ing the moment of conversation”. I continue, “Maybe that is one way through which I, as an American, could bet-ter myself!” Slow down and enjoy the moments we have with each other. This is a lesson we could all learn.
Why do we have to be in such a hurry? We wake up, hurry to get ready for work, or school, and rush out the door. We live in a fast-past world. Technology and advancements has made it much easier and faster to do our work. We travel on the interstate and the traffic zooms past us like we are sitting still, or maybe we are the ones zooming by others. We do not have time, or maybe we just do not invest the time to slow down and enjoy the mo-ments of getting to know others.
This month will zoom by as well. If we are not careful, we will breathe and it will be October. May I suggest we slow down and enjoy September? I mean, look at August – the month went by so fast, I am not sure I remember everything that took place. I pray we can enjoy Labor Day and all that weekend has to offer. I pray we can pause in our life and enjoy each day, for it will be a day created by God for us to enjoy as well as through which we can ex-perience God’s wonderful presence. I pray we do not get so caught up with life that we miss living and enjoying it. There will always be events and activities to attend and enjoy in life, but I believe we can enjoy them better.
I watched many hours of the Olympics. The games were so exciting and it was fun to watch the athletes com-pete with the best from around the world. It was also fascinating to watch the fans in the stands. Many cheered, some could not watch as their loved one participated, some was so anxious that it seemed they were more nervous than the athlete they watched. I can only imagine the many emotions that were experienced by the athletes and the fans. But, the most fascinating thing to me was how many people failed to watch the event live because they had their smart phones out recording the event. They could not just experience the moment. They had to record to “save the moment” forever. Now, don’t misunderstand me. I am not against recording. I often do the same thing. Yet, when someone ask me how I felt at the moment, my response is, “well, I don’t really know because I was re-cording.” You see, we often miss the enjoyment of the moment because we are doing something else, even if that is recording so we can relive the moment.
Slow down and enjoy the moment. That is one thing I pray we do as we talk about our current sermon series “Neighborhood Watch”. I pray we learn the importance of being a good neighbor and we learn how to be a good neighbor. There is a difference in those statements. My encounter with Mary the other day forced me to evaluate the moment. I could have easily moved ahead of her and put the bags in her car, said goodbye and moved on to the next thing. But, pausing long enough to walk with her, investing myself in the moment to talk with her, I was able to experience more of the fullness of God’s presence. Thank you, God for the brief moment that day that made me reflect on you and others. That’s part of being a good neighbor.
Join us this month as we continue to learn about and seek to be a good neighbor. By the way, why not invite your neighbor to join us for worship.
From The Director, It had been a difficult year for forty-year old Horatio Spafford. He and his wife were grieving the loss of their son
when the great Chicago fire struck and ruined them financially. That fall, he decided that the family needed to get
away, so he planned to take his wife and daughters to England. He booked passage on the SS Vile for the ladies
and he planned to follow a few days later.
While crossing the Atlantic, the SS Vile was struck be another ship and in 12 minutes, sank. More than 200 hun-
dred lives were lost, including Spafford’s four daughters. After making shore in Wales, Mrs. Spafford cabled her
husband these words, “Saved alone”.
Spafford booked passage on the next ship and nearing the spot where the ship had gone down, he penned the
words:
When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll,
Whatever my lot, thou has taught me to say. It is well, it is well with my soul.
We all have faced personal tragedy in our life. But I cannot fathom the loss of four daughters in one accident.
How could it be “well with my soul” for Spafford as he faced this grief? How could he write the words, “when
peace like a river attendeth my way”? Perhaps Horatio’s thoughts went to the writings of Paul, who reminded us in
Philippians 4: 6-7 where peace can be found. Paul says in verse 6, it can be found as we pray, believing that God
listens and answers. As M.R. Vincent puts it, “peace is the fruit of believing prayer.” By praying and trusting, the
burdens we carry, anxiety and grief, are replaced with “the peace of God” (verse 7). An inexplicable calmness of
our spirit that exceeds our ability to understand the circumstances, a peace that guards and protects us, engulfs us.
A peace that we cannot manufacture but it is only through God’s giving that it surround us. The result is that the
peace of God stands with us as a sentinel on guard of our hearts and we too can say as Horatio Spafford, “it is
well with my soul’.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication,
with thanksgiving let your request be made know to God.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension,
Will guard your hears and your minds in Christ Jesus” Philippians 4: 6-7

Our cup runneth over! How in the world can a mission field made up of 20 + rooms and 30 + volunteers and donations of
any and everything imaginable Bless so many in so many ways in so many places and in every walk of life?
Our God is Good !
Open Hearts exists to help others in our community and we do that in several ways. We sell items that have been donated
to our store for a very nominal price. That enables us to put the money right back into our community and organizations that
serve those in need. Every now and then we think we’ve gotten everything, but before we take even take a deep breath , here
comes another donation, another dollar and another opportunity to serve someone in need.
Since our last report we have marked our location with a beautiful banner across our front doors so anyone with a need can
find us! Bro. Daryl Brown prayed with us and asked the Lord to bless our efforts and allow our new sign to be a beacon in
our community. We work extremely hard to meet the needs that are brought before us.
A group from Cordele United Methodist Church are traveling to Cuba. We packed 8 large suitcases with clothes, shoes and
personal care kits for them to distribute.
Harmony Baptist Church called and needed shoes to take to Kentucky on their mission trip. We gathered, cleaned and paired
huge bins for children, men, and ladies. A sister church is also going to Kentucky and we packed coats and jackets for them.
This was a wonderful activity for our whole team, packing and being mindful of their needs.
Another church needed to replace their roof so they could continue to worship in their beloved little church. What a pleasure
for us to assist them. These folks are right here among us, our neighbors. We will celebrate with them when everything is
complete!
We gave over $200 to the Christian Learning Center in Wilcox County and helped a student with a $50 donation so she could
compete at a National level in FCCLA and she won!
