What does it mean to be a community? From the early days of the LJCC, it
has meant finding a place of belonging, a place to be with those who share
the same values and history, a place to find camaraderie in coming together
with a shared vision. In our current society, community is o!en defined a
li"le differently, with so much of what we call community taking place in
front of a screen, with no real connec%on to the warmth of a voice speaking
our name, eyes gree%ng us in recogni%on, arms held out to offer an embrace.
Historically, membership in a Jewish community has demanded a sense of
shared responsibility for one another, the mitzvah of caring for those mem-
bers of the community who are in need, as well as coming together to cele-
brate life’s joys. This is the community that we strive for, yet it is not some-
thing that can be achieved by only a few.

of community. Come to Shabbat services and stay to visit with friends or get
to know someone new. Show up for the Blintz rolling on Oct. 7. Join in the
conversa%on at Adult Ed on Oct. 18. Celebrate a baby naming on October 20.

Dillons Rewards Program

way to benefit the LJCC at no cost to you! If you haven’t
yet done so, visit the Dillons website at

The LJCC leadership took a bold step this summer: they
dismantled the Religious School. No longer do our chil-
dren gather on Sunday mornings for school, no longer
do they sit at tables and desks in an otherwise near-
empty building. Nope. Now, we gather for Shabbat.
Children and parents together, along with all who seek
a Shabbos minyan, spend a morning celebra%ng the day
of rest. There’s not much about it that feels like
“school.” It’s a Shabbat experience – and all are wel-
come.
Families of children age three to seventh grade are par-
%cularly invited to a"end the Shabbat morning experi-
ence and worship the first Saturday morning of each
month.
9:15 a.m. Come early to grab coffee, cocoa, or a
morning snack!
9:30 a.m. The morning kicks off with music and stories
to set the tone and theme for the day.
9:50 a.m. Kids scamper off for age-appropriate, experi-
en%al programs on the chosen theme, while parents
refresh their coffee and se"le in for a relaxed discussion
of issues surrounding Jewish families and childhood.
10:20 a.m. Regroup!
10:30 a.m. Families join the whole community for
Shabbat morning worship. A!er the first aliyah, kids
gather for relevant and – again! – age-appropriate, ex-
perien%al programs.
11:45 a.m. Potluck Kiddush Luncheon
But this monthly Shabbat experience can hardly stand
alone. Rather, it should serve as a launch pad for fami-
lies as we exercise tradi%ons and create new rituals in
our own homes and as a community.
Weekly Hebrew tutoring for children 3rd
grade and
above, as well as b’nai mitzvah prepara%on are s%ll vital
components of the educa%on program at the LJCC with
more informa%on to follow in the coming weeks.
Shana Tova to all!

“Writing Jewish: Midrash, Myth and Miracles” is the second annual offering of the “Jews in the Mid-west” speaker series. This one-day writing workshop plus symposium celebrates Jewish literature and crea-tive writing in the heartland.
For a complete schedule, please visit: https://jewishstudies.ku.edu/2018symposium
The morning writing workshop from 10am-12pm is hosted by Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg (2009-13 Kansas Poet Laureate). Writing our own midrash – the Hebrew tradition of re-visioning traditional texts from the To-rah and beyond – allows us to get into the control room of cultural and religious dominant narratives to re-script how we live and re-vision who we are. Using innovative and short writing prompts based on poetic meanderings through midrash, you’ll find your way into unearthing and inventing individual and collective stories that can lead to greater freedom and resilience.
The afternoon symposium from 1:45pm – 5:00pm will feature talks by Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg (2009-13 Kansas Poet Laureate), Renee Perelmutter (Associate Professor of Jewish studies and Slavic languages and literatures at KU), and Rena Rossner (author, and literary agent based in Israel).
Both programs are free. The symposium is open to the public, but the writing workshop requires a reserva-tion. RSVP to the writing workshop here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/writing-workshop-with-caryn-
mirriam-goldberg-tickets-47568657134
Lunch is provided for participants in the writing workshop. If you need a Kosher lunch, please email [email protected] or call (785) 864-4664 before October 5.
