Great build quality, but a tad too large

• The Iris 504Q+ is a well-built handset with a 7.9mm frame and a metal back panel

• However, its thick bezels and large display make it difficult for one-handed use

• It gives onscreen controls a miss and features a row of capacitive backlit Android keys at the bottom instead

Page 3: Lava Iris 504Q+ review

Brilliant, fluid display with punchy colours

• The device features a large 5-inch display with 720p resolution, and a layer of Asahi Dragontrail glass for protection

• The screen is vibrant, with punchy colours that make it ideal for viewing videos and playing games

• It’s fluid and responsive, with no lags while typing or scrolling

A capable duo of cameras

• The Iris 504Q+ features a 10MP primary camera with a Sony Exmor RS sensor and LED flash, and a 2MP shooter in the front

• A Voice Capture feature activates the shutter when you say ‘Cheese’ or ‘Capture’

• The camera app offers HDR, Panorama and various scene modes, and even includes a QR code scanner

Great images, but noise is an issue

• The primary camera captures great daylight shots, and is especially good for macros

• The front camera takes decent selfies, but they appear hazy in low light

• However, grain is an issue. Zooming in reveals a fair bit of noise and loss of detail, even in daylight shots.

Mostly stock Android with a few tweaks

• The Iris 504Q+ runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, a few added tweaks

• Air Shuffle lets you swipe your hand above the display to browse the gallery, app drawer, radio stations, and even capture photos

• The dialer app lets you record or take notes while on a call

• The music player and FM Radio have also been modified with visualisations and a new UI

Pre-loaded apps are few

• Among the pre-loaded apps, you’ll find WhatsApp, BBM, Sketch, OfficeSuite, and MyNotes.

• There’s also a Battery Saver app, which offers you a choice of different modes you can activate to conserve battery life

• Variety Theme offers a choice of three themes that alter the look and icons of stock Android

Chugs along without any freezes or lags

• The Iris 504Q+ is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6582 processor, paired with 1GB of RAM and a Mali 400 MP2 GPU

• The device is fast and responsive, with no noticeable lags or freezes• Graphics heavy games like Riptide GP2 play without a hitch• There’s 8GB of expandable internal memory, out of which about 5.4GB is

available to use for storage

You’ll need to carry your charger

• The smartphone is fuelled by a 2,000mAh battery

• The battery drains out before the end of the day with regular use, with video playback and 3G causing heavy impact

• Our standard video loop test gave us a below-average 7 hours of playback before the handset ran out of fuel

Pricing and verdict

“The Iris 504Q+ offers all the features you’d expect from a smartphone in its price range. The outdated operating system and disappointing battery life are the only areas where the handset needs improvement. However, if what you’re after is a reliable device with a great display and capable cameras, the Iris 504Q+ should be on your shortlist.
