The year 2013 promises to be highly signifi cant for Laureus as we stage the Laureus World Sports Awards in the Southern Hemisphere for the fi rst time.
Rio de Janeiro will be at the centre of the sporting world over the next few years as it builds up to the 2014 FIFA World CupTM and the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games and it is fitting that we are able to take the Awards Ceremony there for the next two years.
Rio is an important development, but our plans for 2013 and beyond will touch every continent as we also intend to accelerate the pace of growth of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation worldwide. The number of sports-based community projects that Laureus supports passed 100 last year and we are not going to allow our expansion to slow down.
One of the highlights of the year was the relaunch of the Laureus Foundation in the United States and its tie-up with the Coach Across America programme, which aims to help 40,000 young people over the next few years.
In this edition of the Laureus Magazine you can read about an emotional visit we made to New Orleans, seven years on from Hurricane Katrina, as part of this initiative.
For me the Laureus Global Summit at FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium in November was also memorable. Staged with the help of the Laureus Foundation in Spain, project leaders from around the world joined together with Academy Members to take part in workshops and share their experiences and expertise. Yet another example of the Laureus network flourishing.
As you turn these pages, I hope, like me, you will be amazed at the sheer breadth of the work of Laureus, which now reaches 34 countries. These are impressive numbers, but we never lose sight of the fact that every child we help is an individual.
None of this would be possible without the work of our project leaders and volunteers around the world and without the support of our Founding Patrons, Richemont and Daimler, and Global Partners, Mercedes-Benz and IWC Schaffhausen. I thank them all most sincerely.

On an official Government visit to Brazil in September, Mr Cameron presented a special edition Laureus Statuette to Sérgio Cabral, Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro, at the Palacio da Cidade, as Rio geared up to stage the Laureus Awards Ceremony in 2013 and 2014. Mr Cameron said: “Hosting the Laureus World Sports Awards in London was the perfect way to kick off an unforgettable year of sport for Britain. Now it’s Rio’s turn.
“These Awards celebrate the very best in sporting achievement but behind that, and even more importantly, is Laureus’ commitment to use sport to leave a lasting legacy for young people around the world. I am delighted to now be handing over the baton to Rio, as it looks forward to what promises to be an incredible few years of sport.”
Later, with Laureus World Sports Academy Chairman Edwin Moses and fellow Academy Member Emerson Fittipaldi, he visited the long-established Laureus-supported Luta Pela Paz (Fight for Peace) project in the favela of Complexo da Maré.

Hosting an event like this, which also has social projects involving sports, will help us create a social legacy we will leave for our population.
Accompanied by four British Olympic athletes - gold medal-winning boxers Anthony Joshua and Nicola Adams and judokas Euan Barton and Gemma Gibbons – Mr Cameron arrived at Luta Pela Paz following a short tour through the streets of the local community. At the project he attended training sessions and presentations of boxing, capoeira, judo, taekwondo, luta livre (wrestling) and jiu-jitsu and met pupils from the Luta Pela Paz education classes.
Founder and project leader Luke Dowdney said: “Mr Cameron was very open to listen to our young people telling him of the challenges that they face on a daily basis as well as learningabout how Fight for Peace has been working here for the last 12 years, helping and offering opportunities to children and young people.”
Mr Cameron actively supported the Laureus World Sports Awards in London in 2012 and hosted a welcome reception at No 10 Downing Street just hours before the Awards Ceremony began at Central Hall, Westminster.

At the reception, Mr Cameron also announced the launch of the ‘This is GREAT Britain’ Facebook campaign which emphasised all the good things about the country today. Throughout 2012, partners of the campaign were guest editors of the Facebook Hub, a role which Laureus undertook for a week.
Before he became Prime Minister, in 2009 Mr Cameron teamed up with Laureus World Sports Academy
Member Daley Thompson for the final day of the Laureus Manchester-London cycle ride which drew attention to the growing problems of gun and knife crime in the United Kingdom.
A keen cyclist, Mr Cameron joined Daley on his visit to the London Active Communities Urban Stars project at Lillian Bayliss Old School in Kennington along with Laureus Academy Members Boris Becker, Gary Player, Hugo Porta and Steve Waugh.

Mercedes-Benz has been proud to be a Global Partner of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation since it was created in 2000. Together we have made long-term improvements to the lives of more than one-and-a-half million young people – and the work goes on.
One of the highlights of 2012 came in September when Mercedes-Benz Germany and some of its dealers supported the very first Laureus Sport for Good Weekend in Munich, which included a sports camp, a celebrity golf tournament and a charity gala with auctions, donations and a raffle to help raise funds for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Germany and Austria.
The auction alone produced €240,000 from the sale of two restored Mercedes-Benz SL pagodas from the 1960’s, which contributed to an incredible €1.5 million raised for Laureus projects in Germany and Austria during the year.
The restoration of the SL pagodas is a project of Mercedes-Benz apprentices in two dealerships in Germany. They are buying old SL pagodas and with the help of an expert they are restoring them to their original style and specification.
In addition Mercedes-Benz donated more auction items which raised another €56,500 for the German Laureus Foundation, such as participation in the Mille Miglia (€30,000) and many more.
Harald Schuff, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Sales Germany and Chairman of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Germany, said: “We are very pleased that the first Laureus Sport for Good Weekend has received such a positive response. For me, I am so pleased about the donation success we’ve had.”
In November and December 2012 Mercedes-Benz initiated a Laureus Sport for Good campaign with the support of Laureus Ambassador Wladimir Klitschko and media partner RTL. In a pre-split TV spot a participant from the German Laureus-supported project ‘KICK im Boxring’ joined Wladimir to promote the mission of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation: using sport as a tool for social change.

In total 20 pre-split spots, presented by Mercedes-Benz, were shown on TV before and during the Wladimir Klischko v Manusz Wach fight, so that a very prominent environment was used to tell the public about the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and its work.
To get sustainability there has been an online follow-up on different RTL internet channels, such as RTLnow.de, sport.de and RTL.de until mid-December. On different internet channels, more detailed information about Laureus was available and especially Laureus Foundation Germany and the ‘KICK im Boxring’ project.
An impressive €31,000 was the final sum raised for Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Germany from the charity evening at the MercedesCup tennis event in July in Stuttgart. Laureus Academy Member Boris Becker and 300 guests attended the charity evening which included an auction and a raffle.

One of the real highlights of the Laureus calendar in recent years has been the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Global Summit.
In 2012, following a very successful event in London the previous year, the summit journeyed to Barcelona and the home of one of the world’s top football clubs: FC Barcelona.
The Summit is a testament to the Laureus goal of strengthening the network of supported projects and offering more than financial help alone. And by bringing leaders from worldwide projects together to learn about how they can use sport for social change, this priceless opportunity to learn from each other is doing just that.
At the event, Laureus took the opportunity to talk to leaders based as far apart as Nairobi to Zurich to learn what their main challenges, hopes and goals are by using sport for social change.
Answering the questions were Lewis from the Johannesburg Cubs project and Sneh from India’s IMAGE project,
SO WHAT IS YOUR PROjEcTALL ABOUT?
Lewis: Johannesburg Cubs is a cricket project, working in the townships of Jo’burg. We work with a lot of orphans: Aids orphans, children of murdered parents, and we try to better their lives.

Sneh: IMAGE brings able bodied kids and partners them with kids with disabilities allowing them to bond through sport,
WHY SPORT? WHY YOURPARTIcULAR SPORT?
Lewis: Our project is based on taking kids from the townships and integrating them with kids from more affluent areas through cricket. They spend the weekends together, and play together. Not all of them are the best cricketers, but through cricket they learn to better understand each other.
Sneh: Through sport these disabled kids learn that they do have strengths and capabilities within them, which helps make them confident and independent. We had kids come in for their first time with no self-esteem, no confidence, they were battered, broken children, but very soon, before anything else, what moves them on is new confidence, and that comes from sport.
WHAT cHALLENGES DO YOU FAcE?
Lewis: A main aim of ours is to help secure scholarships and bursaries for our participants from the townships.
But people who had tried to do this before us fell short. They gave the kids scholarships to top schools but these youngsters from the townships would find it difficult to integrate with the kids there and felt as though they stuck out.
What we do is help them socialise with kids from more affluent backgrounds and so when our kids get into top schools, they already understand other kids from different backgrounds.
Anybody who wants to get a snapshot of Laureus in action should have been with me at the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Global Summit in Barcelona. I guess we overuse words like ‘global’ and ‘great’ in our daily life, but that was what it was like at FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium in November.
GLOBAL SUMMIT 13
LAUREUS VICE CHAIR, SEAN FITZPATRICK AND ACADEMY MEMBER MARVELOUS MARVIN HAGLER AT THE SPORT FOR GOOD SUMMIT 2012 IN BARCELONA
There were project leaders from 34 countries, all bringing their own special stories of how Laureus works in their own part of the world. It was fascinating. And though I have had the pleasure of visiting Laureus projects on four continents, I still found it an eye-opener to see such a unique gathering of so many people who are so passionate about what sport can do in so many different kinds of communities. My most memorable moment, without doubt, was watching Rwanda’s Paralympic star Dominique Bizimana, who lost his legs in the civil war there, captivate a large group of these project leaders with a display of his sitting volleyball skills. At the time I was being dragged into a game of basketball along with Morné du Plessis and Hugo Porta, but we all had
to stop to watch this amazing man in action. Then he got some of the project leaders to try it and our admiration for what he could do increased by about one thousand per cent. The objective of the Summit was to strengthen the global network of Laureus projects by allowing them the chance to share ideas, knowledge and good practice with one another. And my goodness that worked.
Many of the project leaders told me how much they had received from the Summit and how it would make so much difference to their lives now. Well, believe me, I came away thinking exactly the same, with even more determination to work harder to support great enthusiasts like that.

HOPES & GOALSSneh: The adult mindset [in India] is that the disabled are just worthless and these perceptions need to change if we want kids to take part we need the support of the community and parents. But in the past we have had a number of schools pull out when parents discover their kids are spending time with disabled kids.
HOW DOES BEING PART OFTHE LAUREUS FAmILY HELP YOUR PROjEcT?
Lewis: I started Jo’burg Cubs by myself and it just grew and grew and it became too big for me to support alone.
With Laureus support, we have really managed to grow further in terms of trainers, coaches and the numbers we can now help, not to mention feed and clothe. We can also provide transport for the kids taking part in the project.
Sneh: IMAGE wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for Laureus support. When we initially started, some donors were upset we were running this kind of project [with kids with disabilities] and there was pressure to shut it down, so without Laureus, it wouldn’t have existed.
AND HOW HAS THE SUmmIT HELPED?
Lewis: I found it very interesting and I’ve been able to meet people with similar projects and find out we have a lot in common to share. But what I’ve learnt is that there are also different ways to do things, and hopefully I can share this with people back home.
Sneh: I think in particular the workshops are extremely useful. These have taken us through things to do and think about. This kind of information from experts is invaluable.
Seeing our combined efforts achieve lasting improvements to the lives of children in need is one of the most important ways in which we fulfil our philosophy of Corporate Social Responsibility.
In a tradition that goes back to 2006, IWC Schaffhausen has created for the seventh time a limited special edition watch for the benefit of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
In its characteristic shade of blue, the Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph Edition Laureus Sport for Good Foundation in stainless steel is limited to 1,000 watches.
The design engraved on the back of the watch results from a children’s drawing competition within the Laureus-supported projects around the world.
“We are proud to present another watch that mirrors the passion of Laureus and the powerful effect sport can add to all our lives”, said Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen. “The engraving is a reminder that a portion of the proceeds from sales will help disadvantaged children around the world.”
Supported by IWC Schaffhausen, and in the presence of Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Chairman Edwin Moses, Laureus Switzerland staged the sixth Laureus Charity Night in Zurich in November. Now a major social event, it was attended by 600 guests from sporting, business and political circles, all keen to show their solidarity with disadvantaged children in Switzerland.
The increasing and powerful impact of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is a source of pride for IWC Schaffhausen. As a Global Partner of this unique worldwide social force we not only provide fi nancial support but also advance the idea by means of our own activities.

With their generous commitment a record donation of CHF 444,000 (€360,000) was collected, which will go in full towards the Foundation’s projects.
Prizes at the benefit auction included a trip to the 2013 Laureus World Sports Awards in Rio de Janeiro, a sailing cruise with explorer and adventurer, Mike Horn and a unique IWC Pilot’s watch Spitfire Perpetual Calendar Laureus Charity Night in platinum.
The number of guests and the record donations speak for themselves and IWC Schaffhausen is very pleased that disadvantaged children in Switzerland are receiving the benefits.
Cycling for a good cause: IWC Schaffhausen sent three teams including CEO Georges Kern to compete in the fourth Tortour non-stop-bike-race in Switzerland, whose Charity Partner is Laureus Switzerland.
The team Laureus 1 ended up being victorious in the six-person team category. “This race which lasts several days provides not only an unbeatable platform to attract more attention to Laureus”, said CEO Georges Kern, “it also generates financial resources for the funding of our various projects.”

We are proud to present another watch that mirrors the passion of Laureus and the powerful effect sport can add to all our lives.
He was just 13 when his father was murdered. He had never imagined such a thing would happen to the man he loved so much. And amid thoughts of revenge, anger and hopelessness, he faced not only the end of his father’s life, but the possibility of throwing his own away as well.
“It was pretty much at the time my father was killed that I joined Fight for Peace (FFP). It was crucial in changing my way of thinking.”
This devastating event was 12 years ago now. But since that dark time, Roberto Custodio, a native of the Maré favelas in Rio de Janeiro, has emerged as one of his country’s most promising boxers, only missing out on a place at this year’s London Games by the slightest of margins.
One of the younger members of the Brazilian national boxing team, the fighter from Rio was overlooked in place of a more experienced pair of hands. “It was tricky and it would have been great,” he says, “but I look forward to doing a good job and fighting for a place in Rio 2016.”
It’s the kind of modest strength and ambition that has seen him triumph over far greater adversity to become the admired figure he is in his community today.
Roberto’s childhood home was the Maré favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Here, faced with growing up without his father, he battled with thoughts of seeking revenge against those who had murdered him. However, it turned out to be a boxing project, recentlyset up in Maré, which helped convince him otherwise.
Speaking to Laureus from the Rio base of the FFP project, Roberto says: “I was only thinking about vengeance, but the project was there to stop me. I came to realise that by taking revenge it would make it even worse. I would have had revenge, but life for my family, and any family I might have in the future, would be even worse. That’s why I threw myself into sport.”

SUCCESS STORY 17
SUccESS STORY
I was only thinking about vengeance, but the Fight for Peace project was there to stop me.
I love coaching. For me, it is passing on what you have learnt and that is a great joy, especially passing on to the young people in the maré community here.
The Laureus-supported Fight for Peace project in Rio uses boxing and martial arts training to help vulnerable young people, as Roberto once was, to find new direction and purpose in life. The project has a sister initiative in east London with the same goals.
Now aged 25, Roberto has traveled from country to country with the Brazilian national team. And, though based with them in Sao Paulo, it is of testament to his character and love for his community that he remains a coach to those in Maré looking for someone to rely on, as he once needed himself.
He says: “I love coaching. For me, it is passing on what you have learnt and that is a great joy, especially passing on to the young people in the Maré community here.”
And he sees first-hand that despite the problems Rio still faces, the work of FFP is making a remarkable difference to lives here in Maré.
In September 2012, Laureus and strategic partner PeacePlayers International (PPI) began a new three-year project to help deliver training services to projects from throughout the Laureus Global network.
PEACEPLAYERS INTERNATIONAL AND LAUREUS HAVE BEEN WORKING TOGETHER IN CREATING A CURRICULUM THAT PROJECTS AROUND THE WORLD CAN BENEFIT FROM
LUTA PELA PAZ OPERATES IN BOTH RIO AND EAST LONDON, WHERE IT IS KNOWN IN ITS ENGLISH TRANSLATION AS FIGHT FOR PEACE
The first area to benefit from the new peace and leadership curriculum was Latin America and it will be delivered in collaboration with the Laureus Foundation Argentina.
Benefitting from this first rollout of training services were a mix of Laureus projects in Argentina and Brazil. In Argentina these were: Virreyes Hockey, Unión y Armistad de San Isidro, A Ganar and Club Atletico Platense, while in Brazil the Instituto Passe de Magico was also taking part.
Using the curriculum previously developed by PPI and Laureus, the
projects were helped to develop their own so that it was particularly suited to their individual areas and work.
Over five days, the projects were offered support conducting needs assessments regarding their work, training in using sport to promote peace and leadership, and development advice in how the projects can use this new knowledge in practice with young people. The work being done here is a perfect example of how being a member of the Laureus network means being a part of a true global family of learning.
PEACEPLAYERSINTERNATIONALARGENTINA TRAINING PROGRAmmE
“I have seen so many young people in this community totally lost, without any idea of what to do. Now FFP is an option for them, people are getting better access to jobs where once only trafficking was an option for them. In Maré now, I see a big difference since FFP arrived, young people’s perspectives are being changed through sport.”
As Roberto says these words, a young voice interrupts him and another reason as to why he feels so passionately about the young people of his community becomes clear. It is his daughter. She is named Rillary (pronounced Hillary) and he reveals she will be celebrating her fourth birthday in just a few days.
“She is like me when I was a kid, always running around. I see myself in her and that’s cool.”
With a little girl of his own, the product of a marriage that is now in its eighth year, it is hard not to reflect back to the decision Roberto made 12 years ago. The decision to fight for peace, not revenge.
“I’m so glad I took that decision …
“Now I can say ‘I won’. I can say‘I’m the winner’.”

A tour of every project in Spain which has been awarded a ‘For Our Heroes’ grant, gave the Foundation the opportunity to travel throughout the country and meet some incredible people who are using sport to improve the lives of young people.
For Our Heroes is a project devised by Fundación Alex, by which Laureus looks at the best sports for development programmes across Spain and, with the help of an independent jury of sports players and personalities, decides which to award funds to.
Another highlight came in May, when Laureus Spain teamed up with the Madrid Tennis Federation to unveil the ‘Cross the Net’ project at the Mutua Madrid Masters with Laureus Academy Members Nadia Comaneci and Miguel Indurain and Spanish tennis legends Carlos Moya and Miguel Santana. The programme gives training to boys and girls from deprived areas of Madrid to help them become instructors. Once qualified, they then move to tennis clubs and associations where they become coaches.

Fundación Laureus España also supports ‘Young Athletes’, a Special Olympics project, through which three to four-year-old disabled children are introduced to sport and physical exercise, and ‘I Have a Dream’ where Laureus supports four Spanish athletes with everything necessary to continue their personal training, sports and academic development at an American university.
Gabriel Masfurroll, Chairman of Fundación Laureus España, said: “We are proud to have developed four projects in our country, through which we are promoting social change through sport.
Due to the economic situation in Spain, a lot of good programmes are disappearing and a lot of good people are being neglected. We are trying to find the support to make sure this does not happen.”

Global Summit at FC Barcelona which included major interviews with Academy Members Mark Spitz, Miguel Indurain and Tanni Grey-Thompson as well as Sandro Rosell, President of FC Barcelona, on the pitch at the famous Camp Nou stadium in which he talked about the co-operation between the football club and Laureus in Spain.
The 30-minute show, which had its first airing in August 2010, is currently
broadcast on ESPN Star Sports, NBC Universal Sports, Supersport, Trace Sports, NTV and Dubai Sports Channel among many others.
The highly successful Laureus Global Summit at Camp Nou was made possible by the work of Laureus Spain and particularly Gabriel Masfurroll in his position as Vice-Chairman of the FC Barcelona Foundation.
He said: “It was very important for me personally to see how these two institutions that I know so well and have a lot in common, worked together and shared their values.
We were proud and honoured to have hosted the Laureus Summit, since we had the opportunity to show what this amazing city and country can offer. At the same time, having people from all over the world sharing their knowledge was an unbelievable experience for us. After the Summit, we could all see the value of being part of such an amazing organisation like Laureus.”

Ten years on she became a coach at PPI and was selected as one of 11 young people to be enrolled in the first intake of the ground-breaking Laureus YES programme, which trains young people to become role models within their communities.
Andile took courses in sports management, radio journalism and IT as well as taking part in team-building adventure activities and in November 2012 became one of the very first to graduate from the programme.
Now 22, Andile said: “I knew this was a once in a life time opportunity. I cancelled all my plans, which were to represent my school at the South African National University basketball tournament, to take part. I learnt so much from so many amazing people. It means a lot that PPI saw my potential and decided that I deserved the opportunity to be selected for this programme.”
YES stands for Youth Empowerment through Sports which aims to fill the dearth in young skilled sports leaders by offering life-changing training delivered by high quality coaches in sport for development. The programme takes place in inspiring adventure contexts which challenges the young people’s leadership skills.
Andile said: “The experience is irreplaceable. It was everything I hoped it would be and everything I needed. Participating in the activities and just being part of the YES group stimulated a whole lot of emotions: I feared, I cried, I rejoiced, I cared, I laughed, I sympathised and empathised, I admired and I even got a glimpse of parts of me that I never thought I’d ever reach. I even got a chance to overcome my greatest fears - fear of height and deep water.”
The Laureus YES programme exists for young people like Andile to gain knowledge and skills that they can share with their communities. It epitomises the essence of Laureus today – the belief that through investing in young people by offering them high quality training we can impact positively on many more communities through the use of sport.

‘YES’ is the word that has changed the life of Andile Msomi. From the uncertainties of life in the township of Umlazi near Durban, Andile was given a helping hand when she joined the Laureus-supported PeacePlayers International project as a grade six pupil at Saphinda Primary School.
As Andile says: “I hope the programme will continue to touch lives and to develop young people for the betterment of themselves and the people around them.”
Dr Catherine Draper from the Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine from the University of Cape Town/Medical Research Council carried out an independent review of the Laureus YES programme and reported:
“YES achieved its intended outcomes. It is evident that this programme impacted participants on both a personal and professional level and the findings of this evaluation indicate the likelihood of positive social change within the projects and communities in which these individuals are based. The overall feedback about the impact of the Laureus YES programme from participants was positive.”

Giants from the world of sport, past, present and future, turned up at the Sports Science Institute at Newlands, Cape Town, to celebrate the first decade of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation South Africa.
With Springbok legend Morné du Plessis as Chairman of Laureus South Africa, it was no surprise that a scrum of rugby personalities, including current players Schalk Burger and Bryan Habana, turned up to show their support.
A highlight was the announcement that Cecil Afrika, one of the most exciting rugby sevens players in the world, is to become a Laureus Ambassador. Cecil said: “My participation in sport has allowed me to experience many different things that I normally would only have dreamed about. I am therefore grateful for this opportunity and I am looking forward to assisting Laureus in their many community development projects.”
Also present with Du Plessis was another Laureus World Sports Academy Member, explorer-adventurer Mike Horn, plus Ambassadors Ernst van Dyk, Baby Jake Matlala, Ryan Sandes, Shaun Pollock, Lucas Radebe, John Robbie and Natalie du Toit.
Since its creation, Laureus South Africa, with the support of their Country Patron Discovery Health, has funded sports-based community projects around the country which have helped to improve the lives of more than 11,000 children.
While enjoying the moment, rugby legend Du Plessis was not complacent. He said: “Yes, it has been a fantastic achievement. We can allow ourselves a few moments to celebrate, but we are already looking forward to the next decade. There is still so much work to do.”

There was an especially joyous moment when the first graduates were presented from the Laureus YES programme, which is training young people to become role models within their communities. Eleven possible leaders were selected from South African projects and have taken part in courses in sports management, radio journalism and IT. Each of the graduates received certificates from Achmat Hassiem, the South African swimmer who was injured in a shark attack and then competed at the 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games.
Morné said: “What happens to a kid once he’s gone through one of our projects, where does he go?
The Laureus YES programme is an opportunity to be accredited as a coach and as a social sports educator and it’s been tremendously effective. I had the opportunity to see two of the graduates in this programme actually present to the Laureus Global Summit meeting in Barcelona about the effectiveness of the programme to a standing ovation.”
During the event, Chairman Du Plessis thanked Discovery Health for their stalwart support over the years. He said: “In the early days Discovery Health came to us saying ‘we think this is a fantastic idea and we would like to support you in putting up a local Foundation.’ And so we formed ten years ago and now we are looking towards our next decade.”

The main feature of the expedition has been the Young Explorers Programme, in which groups of young people from around the world have joined Pangaea on various stages of the mission.
Using his knowledge of 15 years of exploration, Horn’s aim has been to create environmental awareness amongst the young and to give them the chance to experience the beauties of the planet.
It was fitting then that the final leg of the programme took place in the dramatic Amazon Basin in Brazil, the country which will stage the Laureus World Sports Awards in Rio de Janeiro in 2013 and 2014.
Horn said: “This has been an unbelievable few years. By working together with young people in unique environments such as the Amazon,
I hope we have helped to open their eyes to the world so that they will go back to their homes with changed attitudes. My goal all along has been to tap the world’s most powerful energy source – the younger generation – to work for the planet.”
Ten Young Explorers from Australia, Brazil, France, Israel, Monaco, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States spent three weeks on Pangaea travelling through one of South America’s many threatened and fascinating regions. Following the motto ‘explore – learn – act’, the young adults experienced and investigated the local environment and took measures to protect it.

Since May 2008, Laureus World Sports Academy Member Mike Horn has been piloting Pangaea, a revolutionary 35-metre environmentally-friendly ocean-going yacht, on one of the most remarkable voyages of exploration ever undertaken – a four-year trans-navigation of the globe by sea and land.

The group used dugout canoes to navigate the narrow rivers and streams of the Rio Negro tributary, they trekked through the rain forest, swam with pink river dolphins and planted rare guarana trees. “What a beautiful experience, to feel the roots in my hand and to know that these delicate little seedlings will soon grow into powerful trees,” said 20-year-old Shruthi Vijayakumar from New Zealand.
Subsequent investigations of the water using sonar equipment indicated that water levels in some locations were high enough to ultimately threaten indigenous tribes.
In a workshop the locals showed the Young Explorers how to use natural materials – to make jewellery for instance. To show their gratitude, Mike’s team distributed first-aid kits, water filter systems, school supplies and toys. Then, back in the wilderness, survival training was on the agenda with Mike showing how to fish piranhas.
Horn is one of the greatest modern-day explorers. Among his exploits have been Latitude Zero, an 18-month circumnavigation of the Earth around the Equator, the Arktos Expedition, a solo circumnavigation of the Arctic Circle lasting 27 months and the
North Pole Winter Expedition, the first ever night expedition to the North Pole, starting from the northern most point of Russia and ending two months later at the North Pole. His Latitude Zero expedition won him the 2001 Laureus World Sports Award for best Action Sportsperson.
During the expedition, which was supported by Mercedes-Benz as main sponsor, Horn has implemented ecological and social projects at 12 locations around the globe. Each one of the projects was joined by an international group of young adults between the ages of 15 and 20.
In 2005, the New Orleans Superdome was a haven for the people of the city as Hurricane Katrina battered their homes.
Seven years later it became a symbol of hope of a different kind as a group of young people visited the stadium to mark the arrival in the city of the Coach Across America programme, supported by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
Coach Across America trains coaches to work in sports-based youth development projects in disadvantaged areas of United States cities. It is hoped ultimately the coaches will provide mentorship to as many as 40,000 young people across 125 communities.
Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Chairman Edwin Moses and Laureus Academy Members Marcus Allen, Robby Naish and Monica Seles were in New Orleans to see the concept in action,
meet the coaches and spend time with some of the young people who will benefit. The New Orleans initiative will start with training and placing 26 coaches in 11 local after-school sports programmes to combat youth crime.
Moses explained: “Today’s coaches go beyond the traditional sense of the term ‘coach’. These coaches are also mentors, community organisers and mediators. Investing in proper training and offering support for these coaches is vital to sports-based youth development. It’s important for an area such as New Orleans, especially post-Katrina, to have quality coaches helping kids here.”

Recent research has suggested that budget cuts in after-school sports programmes have left young Americans three times more at risk of getting involved in unlawful activities. Coach Across America, with the support of Laureus, can help to fill this gap and offer young people a viable alternative through sport to joining a gang, doing drugs or simply staying at home.
The initiative has been established with the support of Laureus Global Partner Mercedes-Benz USA, which is committing US$1.3 million (€990,000) to the Laureus National Foundation in the United States for the project.

Like so many of Europe’s great capitals, the tale of Berlin is one of two cities. Though some parts boast great beauty and affl uence, other parts suffer from high levels of crime, lack of opportunity and, perhaps most destructively, inter-community tension.
Neukoelln, in the old East Berlin, is one such area. Based here, offering young people of the area boxing opportunities, is the Laureus-supported KICK im Boxring project. The project, along with several other KICK sports projects in the German capital, brings teachers, social workers and police together to help young people stay away from crime.
And it was here, following a visit from Laureus Ambassador and boxing great Axel Schulz in October 2012, that a man who has dedicated so much time and passion into the project spoke about his work and how important the project is to him and, even, his family.
Eckhard Lazai is a Berlin police officer and holds the distinction of being Head of Behavioural Training for the Berlin police force.
But what makes his connection to the project so special is not just how he has frequently worked with it since its inception, but that his own father was the man who founded it.
He told Laureus at the project base in Neukoelln: “My father was a police officer in Berlin. He was a good sportsman, a boxer, and having thought about how much he had learnt through sport, he wanted to help kids do the same.”

But he suspected that sport alone would never be enough. “He had this idea that there should be cooperation between sports, social work and the police. There was no cooperation back then. And he realised only this could solve these major problems. I was a young police officer than, and I followed in his footsteps.”
And his work now, 20 years on from the start of his father’s with KICK, perfectly reflects a new, more considered way of tackling crime.
He explains: “In the past the focus was on repression. I would try to get the criminal and put him in jail. But that’s not enough. It’s important, but not enough.
“When you have young people committing crimes you have to ask ‘what can I do to prevent you doing it again? How can I show you that you’re important as a person.’

With Laureus World Sports Academy Member and French football legend Marcel Desailly as Patron, the Fraternity Cup, held in Paris, brings children from around the world together to play football and to learn about each other and their different countries.
The 2012 Fraternity Cup proved a great success, offering the chance to youngsters from countries as distant as Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, France, India, Israel, Madagascar, Morocco, Nepal, Palestine, Romania and Rwanda to take part.
Though football was very much at the heart of the action, the youngsters also enjoyed cultural and artistic workshops where they learned first-hand about what life is like in other countries from their new football friends. At the end they celebrated with a party, alive with traditional song and dance from the various countries taking part. Each participant received a medal to commemorate their visit to Paris.
The closing of the 2012 Fraternity Cup was made particularly special this year by the presence of Stephane Hessel, who fought in the French Resistance during the Second World War. He was an editor of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and celebrated his 95th birthday at the event, chatting to the youngsters who had the rare opportunity to hear his experiences.
Hessel said: “Being here is a wonderful birthday gift. These children come from all across the globe. They are all different from each other and yet they are now connected though personal friendship. I have witnessed a profound fellowship between all these children. This Fraternity Cup is a beautiful sign for the future of humanity.”

The kids aren’t here to learn about fi ghting for themselves, they are learning about what it means to be a team.
“But that’s not the work of a police officer. That’s why we forged a network with social workers, school teachers. That is what we do at KICK.
“It’s a little family story. And it was very special to work with him.”
While at the project visit, a young trainer, just 21 years old, gave us his thoughts on the work at KICK too.
The young man, named Philip, gave a great explanation as to why boxing was such a great tool for bringing young people together with a common purpose at the project.
The final word will go to him.
“The kids aren’t here to learn about fighting for themselves, they are learning about what it means to be a team. They are learning about people from different cultures, different nations so they can learn integration. It works because, here, everyone has one language…
“And that language is boxing.”
THE FOCUS OF THE PROJECT IS ON MUCH MORE THAN JUST WINNING, AND HELPS DEVELOP THE YOUNG PARTICIPANTS’ SOCIAL SKILLS
First Laureus World Sports Academy Member Mark Spitz, who famously won seven Olympic swimming gold medals in Munich in 1972, joined Italian star Filippo Magnini, two-time 100 metres freestyle world champion, and up-and-coming swimmer Luca Dotti.
The new swimming project, which is called A-Roma, will primarily work with a group of ten young people and will not only offer swimming facilities, but instruction from the coaches of the famous Italian swimming club LarusNuoto.
A-Roma is a new branch of Laureus Polisportiva, a wide-reaching network of projects that operates across Italy.
As well as offering sports facilities, participants at the projects have access to qualified teachers, who promote educational opportunities, and psychologists who ensure the mental well-being of the young people as they progress.
Later in the year it was the turn of Laureus Academy Member and French football legend Marcel Desailly, who marked Universal Children’s Day with a visit to the Network in Naples project, which is helping some of the country’s most vulnerable young people through sport. It is currently working with 250 of the city’s most needy children, aged from six to 17. Marcel said: “Our task at Laureus is not only to support projects that deal with young people directly, but to build a worldwide network of projects who believe in the same thing and can support each other.

Our task at Laureus is not only to support projects that deal with young people directly, but to build a worldwide network of projects who believe in the same thing and can support each other.
EDUCATIONALOPPORTUNITIESNetwork in Naples is an example of the excellent work done by Laureus Italy and a good example for the rest of the world.”
Ruggero Magnoni, President of Laureus Italy says: “Our goal for 2013 is to calculate the return on investment of the Network in Naples project. Monitoring and evaluating the economic impact for Laureus projects is a substantial element of our work.
The most recent analysis, carried out using methods validated by Milan’s Bocconi University, has shown that our Midnight Basketball project in Milan, for example, offers a return of €5.02 from every single euro invested, in terms of reducing crime, school drop-out rates and problems with health.”
As Laureus moves further into its second decade, it has never been clearer that evidence of the success being made at Laureus Sport for Good Foundation projects must be documented.
Over the past 12 years, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation has helped community projects achieve remarkable things across the globe. Young people are making great strides towards better Aids awareness, communities are engaging in defined conflict resolution work and crime prevention initiatives are making incredible progress through sport to name just a few.
Learning about these successes on project visits and from the stories that are told from throughout the Laureus global network is a source of great joy, but also inspiration for the work that remains to be done. By conducting research aimed at documenting this evidence on paper in concrete terms and figures, further support is being garnered for the sport for good movement from potential partners, governments and other bodies with the power to secure further support for this on-going work.
The Sports Scores report, co-financed by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and the Ecorys Research programme, was released in October 2012 and is an extension of the 2011 Laureus Teenage Kicks report. Like its predecessor, the report paints a compelling picture as to how financial investment in sports-based crime prevention projects can actually save government money.
Moving on from just the UK focus the Teenage Kicks report maintained, Sport Scores looked at the Sport and Thought and Fight for Peace projects in London, the KICK Im Boxring project in Berlin and the Midnight Basketball project in Milan.
40
The past year has seen Laureus produce a range of ground-breaking new research that is changing the face of sport for development across the world. And in doing so, Laureus efforts are actively securing the future of the sport for good movement itself.
RESEARCH 41
Findings show that every €1 invested in these sports projects can reduce costs to society by an average €5.02. These savings come from reducing costs to victims of crime, police and the courts.
Following this report was research conducted in partnership with Laureus strategic partner, Active Communities Network. The Urban Stars Research report looked at the effect of three Urban Stars sports projects from across the UK: a football project in London, a boxing project in the West Midlands and a multi-sports programme at the South Gloucestershire/Ashfield Young Offenders institute.
The findings were remarkable, and document the great psychological and social benefits the young people experience at these projects.
For example, the London project found 78% of participants had improved confidence. At the West Midlands project, 88% believed they were more likely to help others and at the South Gloucestershire project, 67% were more optimistic about life.
Furthermore, across the projects, participants were over 80% more likely to stay away from gangs.
The final report of the year was The Impact of Indigenous Community Sports Programs: The Case of Surfing. The report looked at the positive effect surfing can have on young people in the Indigenous communities of Australia.

But there aren’t many managers who would use that spare time selflessly raising money for life-enhancing youth sports projects such as those Laureus support. But that is precisely what current Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy did last July for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation with St. James’s Place Foundation.
Mick joined an intrepid group of cyclists, including Laureus Ambassador Michael Vaughan, as they made the 526km journey from London to Champagne in France.
Starting off from the outskirts of London, the group enjoyed some beautiful conditions as they ventured through English countryside before hitting the white cliffs of Dover.
And after three days of taking in the French countryside, not to mention a significant number of tea breaks, they arrived at their destination in Reims, the historic home of champagne.
Telling Laureus about how he got involved, Mick said: “I was at Sir Alex Ferguson’s [25th anniversary at Manchester United] dinner and I met [Michael] Vaughan. He told me more about Laureus, I thought it was brilliant and now I’m here and it’s been great, particularly the camaraderie amongst everyone.”
And having completed his first charity fundraiser for Laureus, Mick explained how deeply he shares the same Sport for Good beliefs.
“There’s no doubt [sport] has a huge effect. We’re all impressed by athletes and this can help. It doesn’t surprise me one bit to see people constantly inspired by sport and sportspeople.”

Sub-optimal weather conditions for September made for some soggy participants, but fortunately the advantage of a sport that begins with a dip in a tepid lake - wetsuits optional - is that a few drops of rain cannot put any more of a dampener on things.
Laureus World Sports Academy Member Daley Thompson, the double Olympic triathlon champion, was on hand for motivation and encouragement and inspired the PruHealth team to put in impressive performances at a range of triathlon distances.
Carly Tyler took first place in the women’s Olympic race in a very speedy 2 hrs 43.16 mins, Andrew Gunn finished 12th in the men’s Olympic race and Nick Read came an impressive seventh in the Novice race.
Nick Read, Director of Vitality at PruHealth, said: “A superb event. The weather was not ideal, but we had a blast. As a team we did really well in the various races but the most important thing was that we were able to raise some funds for Laureus.”
“The relationship we have with Laureus is a win-win situation for both organisations and we look forward to many more successful fund-raising events.”
