I. Research
My continuing interest lies in developing a critical,
questioning analysis of diverse aspects of human resource
management, in a corporate social responsibility perspective. With
the interdisciplinary nature of my research orientation, I have
engaged in joint work with a number of academics, nationally and
internationally, who work in a variety of specialisms, including
strategic management, organisation studies, industrial relations
and sociology. My main research interests fall into three major
areas:
Flexibility and new forms of work organisation
Knowledge management and the issues of knowledge sharing and
organizational learning
Critical management studies and corporate social responsibility
Flexibility and new forms of work organisation. This work has
examined, through empirical research, the transformation of work
and its consequences on human resource management (e.g. C1; C3; C4;
B5; B4). I have focused upon the management of control within
organisations, especially in the changing context of the
introduction of new working arrangements such as teleworking (e.g.
A5; A1; B11; B7). This interest has two aspects. First, an
examination of the dynamic of organisational and human resource
controls in such environments (e.g. A3; B16; B15); Second, the
process of emergence and production of new management norms through
the exploration of social regulation and convention theories (e.g.
B14; B13; E18; E17; E16). Knowledge management and the issues of
knowledge sharing and organizational learning. This has taken the
form of a developing critique of established studies of knowledge
management, undermining the strategic role of actors and
institutions, especially in terms of power and control in an
interpretive perspective (e.g. B13; E19; E12), as well as in the
specific context of public administrations devoted to the
regulation of societal risks (e.g. A9; A10; B23; B19). It is
informed by an interest in social regulationist,
neo-institutionalist and conventionalist theories. It has been
pursued through more extensive case-study based research funded by
FSRIU (Fonds Spcial de la Recherche Interuniversitaire) and ARC
(Action de Recherche Concerte). Critical management studies and
corporate social responsibility. This work addresses the relevance
of developing a reflexive dimension in (and on) management
research, in a social responsibility tradition, through questioning
the consequences of contemporary mainstream management theory and
practice and calling for interdisciplinary theoretical background
(e.g. A11; A12; A6; A4; B8; B9; C6). It led me to consider issues
like disciplinarization (B20); work degradation (B25) when
investigating new forms of work organization and knowledge
management.

II. Education I teach Organisation and Human Resource Studies to
undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students, in French and in
English. Given the status of the field of HRM for students in
management sciences, more familiar with quantitative courses and
modeling, I am particularly aware to connect the field to practice
(a.o. by inviting HR professionals to share their experiences, by
bringing students to analyse a companys hr strategy, by achieving
case studies, by making connections with the socio-economic news).
HR classes then become a real opportunity to understand and learn
about the functioning of an organization. I also try to position
the different courses in the program by giving them a specific
identity. Human Resource Management classes (see Table 2) introduce
the area of HRM: HR main functions (staffing, training and
development, career management, etc.) are contextualized with the
transformation of work and organisations, as well as with the
development of the human relations school. The study of this
socio-economic context helps to understand the emerging and the
development of the HR function; it introduces to the strategic
dimension of HRM, in relation with the corporate strategy and the
position of the HR function and leader, within the organisation. HR
functions are then introduced with some key elements of
organizational behavior theories. Two testimonials usually take
place in these classes: alumni acting in non-hr positions (like
finance or production) share their views on the need to take the
human factor into account ; three HR managers share their
experience in managing people and the HR function and strategy.
Finally, an empirical work (case study) leads students to analyse
an HR policy within a company. Advanced HRM classes (see Table 2)
consist in seminars aiming at developing students ability in human
resource management research methods as well as in the development
of a critical reflection which articulates HRM with CSR
considerations (and that would be more exemplified in the future
and in the context of this position). Every year, a different
topical issue in HR is selected and studied; students focus on an
HR policy that is related to this general issue (e.g. talent
management; age/succession management; responsible human resource
management, linking CSR and HRM). From 2010-2011, I also teach
knowledge management in a similar pedagogical approach. One
specificity I introduced lies in the commitment of HR directors who
mentor students in their empirical work; they also take part to the
students work presentations and discussions, at the end of the
term. Organisation Management class (see Table 2) aims at
developing the students organizational diagnosis abilities. The
main objective is to provide empirical and theoretical background
helpful for the understanding of management practices, work
organisation, and workplace issues. Through taking a theoretically
informed analysis, the course aims at stimulating the intellectual
curiosity of students, so they might be better prepared to assess
companies practices. This class draws heavily on case studies in a
problem-solving approach. The continuous assessment is based on
discussions and presentations of readings and cases; tutoring
sessions support students until the presentation of their final
case. In the past, I also teach an introductory course of Economy
and Management to graduate students in Law (CPFB, 40h, from 2003
till 2007) as well as a seminar on comparative labour studies
(Institut des Sciences du Travail, UCL, 30h, 2003-04).

III. Service I consider the involvement into the university and
the corporate lives as part of the social responsibility of any
academic. I will briefly present here my commitment within some
professional networks, as well as some activities I had the
opportunity to conduct the past few years.
1 Projects, networks and positions 2007 - now LSM HR Network
(head of) The objective of this network is to put together
Academics and Professionals from the HR field.
The access to this network is limited to no.1 HR responsible
persons. Having started with 60 influent HR Directors in early
2008, we now count more than 200 members, without advertising or
communicating externally. Research projects are presented and
discussed during LSM HR Days (once a year), international guest
speakers are invited (once a year) and the final goal is to develop
long-term collaboration and knowledge sharing between University
and Companys actors. This network facilitates our access to
empirical data (cases, e.g.) within companies, but also the access
of our students to internships in the HR field. This also position
our HR expertise on the corporate scene.
2004 - 2012 Belgian Teleworking Association (president, with
Prof. M. Walrave, UAntwerpen)
As a result of my publications on the managerial issues
associated to e-Working, BTA proposed me to integrate the
organisation as Chairman in December 2004. The mission of the BTA
is to inform, assist and sustain all the stakeholders interested in
and/or involved in new forms of work organization's (NFWO)
projects. BTA is a large platform reassembling an important network
of companies and institutions in Belgium and contributing to the
exchange of information and experiences on NFWO (conferences,
workshops). BTA also organizes the e-Working Awards since 2007.
2004 - 2008 Journes de l'Innovation Sociale (academic
coordinator, with Prof. F.Pichault, ULg)
This event is organized by RH Tribune, UWE (Union wallonne des
entreprises), LSM and HEC-ULg. The goal is to bring together again
employers, RH responsible persons and academics around social
innovations (i.e. HR practices). More than hundred participants
took part to this one-day event in 2006. The organisation of such
event is consequent and implies a lot of meetings with corporate
members (coming from private and public organisations) and
academics.
Other positions include:
President and Member of selection committees for HR functions,
in the public sector
Invited Member of the ADP (Association des Dirigeants du
Personnel, Belgium)
Member of the editorial board of the Belgian professional
journal PeopleSphere
