On behalf of my colleagues on the Laurel Town Council and our dedicated Town Staff and Police De-partment, I extend a hearty welcome to residents and visitors on this very special day in America. In just the past few months we have seen op-pressed people in places like Egypt, Libya, and Syria take to the streets in an effort to gain their liberty.

We Americans are so fortunate that we have been able to enjoy our freedom for over 200 years. Our Founding Fa-

thers did a great job creating a unique govern-mental system

which derives its power from the consent of the people and granting to us the right to pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Since those early formative years our na-tion on several occasions has faced challenges from those who would have liked to enslave freedom-loving people throughout the world. Ordi-nary citizens performing extraordi-nary acts of bravery sustained this great democracy; many paying the ultimate sacrifice. As you and your families have fun today remember our heritage, our fallen patriots and heroes, and that our independence and freedom comes at a high price.

The Independence Day Commit-tee has planned a wonderful, old fashioned, patriotic Independence Day Celebration. Treat yourself to some delicious foods, look for those treasures at the various craft vendors,

and enjoy the musical entertain-ment in Market Street Park. This year we have added a fantastic car show. Check it out. You just might find that old model Chevy or Ford that you cruised around in on Friday nights. If you find it, the price will be much higher than what you paid back then.

The carnival is back with its rides for children of all ages. At dusk the sky will be filled with colorful bursts and loud booms from one of best fireworks displays on Delmarva.

I encourage the visitors to take a good look at this community which 3,800 people affectionately call “home.” I believe you will like what you see.

Laurel is one of the finest small towns in America. I am proud and privileged to serve as mayor. Have a great fun-filled day!

that we have been able to enjoy our freedom for over 200 years. Our Founding Fa

Town of Laurel welcomes you

Department. Its theme is “United We Stand, Proudly We Serve.”

Applications to par-ticipate in the parade are available at town hall, said town operations manager Jamie Smith. Participation is free.

The parade will follow the same route it always has, through the heart of downtown along Central Avenue. Also along Central Avenue, as well as along Front Street, vendors will be set up to sell food and drink.

Following the parade, the Little Miss Laurel Inde-pendence Day pageant will be held in the Bandstand at Janosik Park in downtown Laurel. The pageant is for little girls, 5 to 7 years old, who live in the Laurel School District.

The pageant is being limited to the first 15 girls to sign up. Applications

are available at town hall. Entry fee is $5.

Sponsors of the pageant are Kitty’s Flowers and Peapod Photography, both in Laurel.

At 11:30, the annual mayors’ invitational com-petition will get underway along Front Street. While past competitions have been watermelon seed spitting contests, the game featured in this year’s competition is being kept secret, Smith said.

“We want them to be surprised when they get there,” she added.

At 1 p.m., a pie-eating contest will be held along Front Street. The kind of pie has yet to be deter-mined; “probably whatever I can get on sale,” Smith said.

A talent show will get underway at 2:30 on the bandstand. Prizes will be given in three categories,

12 and under, 13 to 18 and 19 and older. Applications for the contest are available at town hall, the chamber office and the Car Store in Laurel.

Entertainment will start up at 5 p.m., when

local band Not My Own takes the stage. The Bo Dickerson Band will play from 7 to 9 p.m., when the fireworks show is set to get underway.

For more information, call town hall, 875-2277.

The Hen House

By Tony E. Windsor

It would take very little time spent in Laurel to realize that this quaint community of just over 3,800 people is a Mecca for out-door recreational enthusiasts.

Whether it is simply the great outdoors and all of it natural splen-dor, access to historical landmarks,

or having access to two major flea markets within two miles of one another, there is definitely some-thing for everybody. The small town atmosphere is enhanced by the fact that the town is located on the banks of the Broad Creek, a tributary of the Nanticoke River off the Chesapeake Bay.

Just a few miles east of the

town is one of Delaware’s pris-tine parks, Trap Pond State Park, where visitors can walk, boat or drive around thousands of acres of wooded land that is home to a plethora of animals and birds.

Inside Laurel are creekside parks including Laurel River Park on the west side of the town. In this park are opportunities for

Another park that hugs the banks of the Broad Creek is

Janosik Park, along Delaware Av-enue. It was named for the couple that founded Janosik World of Furniture, Johnny and Mary Louise Janosik. The Janosiks have been a mainstay of support to the com-munity for over 60 years. Janosik Park provides a peaceful place to

relax on blankets, to sit in a lounge chair to read a book or just to take in the scenery.

Market Square Park, located on the corner of Market Street and Central Avenue, is a landmark for the downtown area of Laurel.

bricks paying tribute to all branch-es of the United States military, fronts Central Avenue.

Along Delaware Avenue at the rear of the park is a bandstand that often is host to local musical tal-ent. The park was a development project undertaken by the grass-roots organization, the Laurel Re-development Corporation (LRC).

The land, which is now Market Square Park, was once home to several major commercial opera-tions, including one of the original stores housing Janosik Television and Appliances.

In the 1990s, after many of the businesses had moved out of the downtown area, the buildings be-gan to fall into a state of disrepair. Local business people and private citizens came together and with financial investments, started the LRC.

The first project of the new or-ganization was to buy the land and tear down the deteriorating and unsafe buildings along the north

side of Market Street. The land was then made into park land and deeded over to the Town of Laurel.

Following this project, the LRC began aggressive revitaliza-tion projects which resulted in a complex of commercial enterprises along Delaware Avenue known as “Laureltowne.”

With a dozen commercial build-ings constructed, local entrepre-neurs moved into the structures and over the years Laureltowne has grown to include a creekside restaurant and a major medical of-fice building.

The revitalization has also been enhanced by the private construc-tion of new condominium town-houses along the Broad Creek known as the “Villas on the Broad Creek.”

Laurel is a town that is poised for great growth and expansion in coming years. A number of com-mercial and residential areas have been annexed. This growth shows little sign of slowing.
