STOP THE FIGHTING!

We investigate why girls are becoming more bitchy to each other and who is to blame ... Laura Johnson reports

WOMEN have always been bitchy. It’s in our nature but it seems these days that women have become even more evil to each other, usu-ally related to clothes or men, or probably both.I don’t need a psychology degree to tell you that this is borne partly of insecurity from the fear that we are failing in some way to be beautiful, successful, to buy the right dress with the gorgeous shoes.

Getting ‘high’ of the fumes of otherwomen’s misfortune seems to be a cheap buzz, and if feels like we are all getting drunk off it these days.“This is not a new trend.” Says Jessica Elliott, fashion student at Norwich University. “Girls have always been evil to each other but as you get older competition with women in relation to men and fash-ion becomes more exaggerated and girls get nastier.” Why are we all so eager to be the best?“Every woman wants to look good,

With a rise in cyber bullying, La Moda decid-ed to investigate the re-ports that it is in fact the female species who are to blame. We spoke to two girls from Norwich University who gave their own views on this not so brand new phenomenon of ‘the bitch wars’.

and in a group of friends the pretti-est, trendiest girl gets the mostattention. I’m a fashion student and I like to think I wear clothes well. A few years ago, I was attacked at college by a group of girls. They pinned me to the ground, cut my hair off and burnt a cigarette out on my cheek. They told me I didn’t deserve to be pretty and popular. Luckily, it didn’t knock my con-fidence as much as it could have but, incidents like this could ruin someone’s whole life.”Why do girls feel like they have to make someone else’s life a misery to make them feel better? Do they really feel better about themselves by making others feel awful?Who do we blame for this? Real-ity TV? British soaps? American TV shows? These television pro-grammes appear to display no im-ages of solid female friendships.Media student Amy Rix explains,

“Lauren and Sam fighting over one man on The Only Way is Essex, sister’s Kylie and Becky throwing punches at each other in Corona-tion Street, Blair and Serena shout-ing and screaming at each other over men and clothes on Gossip Girl. It’s all we ever see. I don’t think I can pinpoint any one show that portrays a calm, friendly fe-male relationship.”It’s hard not to mourn the better days of Buffy and Xena, shows that portrayed inspiring female relation-ships.Now, we have traded the plucky sisterhood of Gilmore Girls for the slick villainy and sexiness of Gos-sip Girl. When all you see on television shows and in magazines that wom-

en are fighting with each other itdoesn’t make you feel great about your own friendships. I have guilty of judging my own friends, mainly about the way they look. Jokingly telling your friend her hair looks bad, or that her shoes are awful. I don’t think people always realise just how hurtful those comments can be,” explains Jess.“It’s not even just television shows that are to blame, look at the music industry these days, women are writing songs and being derogatory about other women. What hap-pened to the sisterhood?” says Amy.Me, I am not innocent. If my best friend turns up at my house before a night out looking gorgeous, of course I feel that twinge of jeal-ousy. I would never tell her I was jealous of her, or tell her she looked awful. I’d tell her she looked stun-ning. Why would you want to make someone feel bad to make yourself

feel better? It is not just young girls that this problem is aimed at; the older generation seems to be even worse. If anyone has watched even one episode of Real Housewives of Orange County you will have seen the fighting and bitching from older woman, wives and mothers. Is that really a great example to set to the younger generation? If a young girl see’s her mother behaving in that way to her friends then, she is without a doubt going to think it is the right thing to do.Girls, be nice to each other. Instead of telling your mate she looks fat or her hair looks rubbish, tell her she looks gorgeous. It’ll make you feel better about yourself too. I promise you.

‘What happened to the sisterhood?’

We asked Jess and Amy their tips on how to be the ‘perfect’ woman.

1. If one of your friends looks good, tell her. It won’t only make her feel good about herself, it’ll make YOU feel great.

2. If you ever find your-self doing the ‘looking the stranger up and down’, stop. Smile at them instead.

3.Don’t ever let your friends be derogatory to others, eplain to them how hurt-ful their comments can be and ask them how they would feel if some-one said those things about them.

4. Never, ever, EVER fall out with a friend over a man, deep down they’re really not worth ruining a friendship over.

borrowing money from friends can end in

disaster.

5 Minutes With ...KATHRYN BEWICK-YOSTwe speak to New Look manager Kathryn Bewick-Yost and get the low-down on her fashionista lifestyle ...

Name: Kathryn Janette Bewick-YostAge: 24Job: Manager at New Look, Norwich.Likes: Maxi dresses, aviators and wooden wedges.Dislikes: Leather shorts, kitten heels and sequins.Cups of tea drank: 3Cream horns eaten: 2Amount of times La Moda tried to get free clothes: 4

LJ: Morning Kat, how are you?KB: Hi, I’m great. Although, I shouldn’t be eat-ing this cream horn.LJ: Don’t be silly, everyone loves a cream horn. So, you’ve worked in retail for years now, how do you find it?KB: I love it. Who wouldn’t love it. What girl would hate being surrounded by gorgeous clothes all day, every day.LJ: That is very true. What does a typical day for a retail manager involve?KB: I go into work, I make sure all my staff know what they’re doing and then we’re off. I manage 8 girls and 2 guys at the Norwich branch. They’re all fabulous.LJ: What perks does your job bring?KB: Obviously being surrounded by clothes and the discount but, I really enjoy going off to regional meetings and sometimes I get to go with the New Look buyer to pick what clothes we’re going to sell in New Look.LJ: I am so jealous. So before we finish, you must tell me what you cannot wait to wear this summer.KB: I love maxi dresses, they hide a multitude of

sins. Heels, every girl should wear heels as much as they can. Sunglasses, especially aviators, they suit most face shapes and they’re so vintage. I also can’t wait to rock the festival look. Dresses with long socks and wellies.LJ: And finally, what trends will you not be ‘rock-ing’ this summer.KB: Leather shorts. Why on earth would you want to wear leather shorts. Leather sticks to you, yuk! Also, kitten heels. Heels are all about massive platform or wedge, none of this little heel business. [laughs]LJ: Well I’m now off to take my leather shorts and kitten heels back. Thanks Kat, see you soon.KB: Thanks Laura, thanks La Moda mag.
