Vice President for Instruction University of Georgia (September 2010- February 2015; Interim, January 2010- August 2010)

Supported teaching, advising and student learning on the University of Georgia’s main and extended campuses as well as online. Led fifteen administrative units to ensure student success from start to finish at UGA (http://ovpi.uga.edu/). Provided strategic direction for initiatives to advance UGA in collaboration with campus and community partners. Responsible for enrollment management including student recruitment, retention and financial aid. Led over 300 employees and managed expenditures of $22M.

Instructional Innovation

Successfully implemented the UGA Quality Enhancement Plan, the First-Year Odyssey Seminar

Program (FYOS) now in its fourth year. The FYOS received the University System of Georgia’s

2014 Regent’s Award for Excellence in the program category.

Launched the UGA Office of Online Learning in 2012.

Provided campus-wide instructional funds to support student credit hour production through a

summer supplemental funding program ($1.2M per year) and the supplemental graduate teaching

assistant program ($500K per year).

Launched the year-round Intensive English Program (IEP) in the Division of Academic

Enhancement in 2014.

Created the Summer Innovative Instructional Grants program in 2012, 65 faculty funded to date.

Implemented the Online Learning Fellows and the Fellows for Innovative Teaching to encourage

experimentation with and adoption of new teaching models and strategies.

Supported the campus-wide transition from the Blackboard Vista learning management system to

Desire2Learn (now Brightspace).

Supported improvements in classroom instructional technology in over 170 classrooms campus-

wide and development of SCALE-UP and TEAL classrooms in the sciences.

Supported a National speaker’s series in the Center for Teaching and Learning focused on STEM

education, emerging learning technologies and learner-centered pedagogy.

Implemented the e-rate tuition differential program to support schools and colleges and

incentivize the development of online programs.

Retention, Graduation and Enrollment Management

Increased access to graduate education through the extended campuses with a 35% increase in

the number of graduate programs offered on the extended campuses since 2010.

Admitted the strongest undergraduate class in UGA history in fall 2014 (GPA and SAT)

Created an enrollment management group to project student enrollment for each term.

Developed and led the implementation of the UGA Complete College Georgia plan with positive

results. Four-year graduation rate reached 62.4% and the six-year graduation rate 84.5%.

Expanded the Collaborative Academic and Retention Effort (CARE) to nine schools and colleges.

Implemented Degree Works, a comprehensive advising and degree audit system, campus-wide.

Implemented a new student information system to replace an aging legacy system 2010-2014.

Launched during the 2013-2014 academic year starting with new student admissions followed by

registration, financial aid and student accounts.

Outreach and Engagement

Experience UGA launched in 2013 to bring K-12 students to campus for annual academic

experiences for all Clarke County School District (CCSD) students at each grade level.

Increased participation in service learning courses in partnership with the schools and colleges.

During 2013-14, more than 7,300 students enrolled in 377 service-learning course sections.

Supported achievement of the Carnegie Community Engagement Recognition in 2010.

Increased outreach activities to share student financial aid information with historically

underrepresented groups. Nearly 2000 individuals were reached at Georgia Probe Fairs.

Development and Marketing

Launched the Gateway to Georgia Scholarship initiative in collaboration with Central

Development to increase funds for need-based scholarships (nearly $1.9M raised to date).

Successfully renewed the Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship program ($1M).

Created the OVPI Advisory Council and the Vice President’s Fund for Instructional Excellence.

Created an external team to position OVPI for the UGA comprehensive capital campaign and to

enhance OVPI external relations capacity. Developed strategic priorities for fundraising.

Represented OVPI with multiple constituencies including students, alumni, industry, state

government, and community partners.

Developed a summer school marketing campaign to increase enrollment in summer courses.

Developed the Instruction Updates newsletter, six new websites across OVPI units, and social

media outlets to enhance communication.

Dean, College of Family and Consumer Sciences University of Georgia (August 2007 – August 2010)

The College advances the well-being of individuals and families and strengthens communities through the generation and dissemination of knowledge, education of professionals, and provision of research-based programs. The College includes four academic departments with approximately 1,700 students and cooperative extension programs throughout the state. Over 360 employees including approximately 100 faculty and 90 graduate students. Expenditures of $19.5M.

Instructional Excellence

Completed four accreditation initiatives resulting in successful re-accreditation of programs.

Enhanced existing degree programs by adding areas of emphasis in Marriage and FamilyTherapy, Family Financial Planning, and International Merchandising.

Increased opportunities for FACS students and faculty to gain experiences in different cultures viastudy abroad programs in Cambodia, Ghana, Mexico, China, Japan, and London.

Increased service learning opportunities for students to interact with a range of diversepopulations (VITA tax assistance program, obesity education with Latino children, povertysimulations).

Led the Child and Family Policy Initiative to improve governance and public policy that impacts

the well-being of children and their families through university-based interdisciplinary research,

policy analysis, training, and technical assistance.

Completed major renovations to improve instruction, research and student support space.

Implemented an online advising scheduling system.

Research Excellence

Developed and implemented a plan to provide faculty assistance, monitoring RFPs, andincreasing grant submissions. In 2008, new grants awarded totaled $15.8M.

Provided seed grants to faculty to initiate promising research projects and supported grantsdevelopment workshops.

Increased endowed professorships to recognize leadership in scholarship and research

College received external funding from a range of federal, state and private sources including theUS Department of Agriculture, National Institute of Mental Health, National Institutes of Health,National Science Foundation, National Institute on Drug Abuse, Center for Disease Control,Georgia Division of Aging Services, Department of Community Affairs, the Georgia Council onEconomic Education, Georgia Department of Human Resources, Georgia Department ofEducation, Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority, and the Governor’s Office of HighwaySafety.

Development and External Relations

Led fundraising efforts resulting in over $4 million in commitments to FACS as part of theCollege’s 100 Legacies in the Making planned giving campaign.

Developed and sustained relationships with business and industry groups in apparel and textilesmerchandising/manufacturing and housing (i.e., Georgia Soft Goods Industry EducationFoundation Board; Atlanta Residential Property Industry Foundation Board).

Expanded the Georgia Initiative for Community Housing (GICH) to 31 Georgia communities andhosted a state-wide retreat for GICH community leaders.

Created partnerships and collaborations to enhance programs and extend the reach of FACS.Examples include work with the American Cancer Society to offer Cancer Cooking Schools andScreening for African American Women, a Senior Care giving project with the Division of AgingServices and a suicide prevention program with the DHR Division of Public Health. Created anew alumni event concept, FACS Breaks (Small Bites… Big Connections) to share Collegeupdates. Increased alumni networking and connections to the college and university.

Created the Chilly Dawg 5K race held each January in collaboration with the FACS AlumniAssociation to promote health, wellness, and community.

Chair, Undergraduate Council (elected faculty leadership) University of Tennessee (2002-2006)

The Undergraduate Council concerns itself with standards for admission, retention, and graduation; with curricular matters in the undergraduate programs; with the development of interdisciplinary programs; with the approval of new programs and any other matters of educational policy pertaining to undergraduate programs.

Campus-wide undergraduate program leadership

Established a set of standing committees to facilitate the work of the Undergraduate Council(advising, student appeals, academic policy, curriculum, and general education). Increased theengagement of faculty serving on the Undergraduate Council (UGC).

Led the General Education curriculum revision effort at UTK working with faculty from across theuniversity to craft a revised General Education requirement approved by the Faculty Senate in2003.

Collaborated with the UGC Advising committee to plan a smooth transition to the newrequirement for students and advisors and facilitated the implementation of the GeneralEducation requirement.

Established a process for reviewing new General Education courses for inclusion on the courselists, reviewing current courses for continuation, and reflecting on future opportunities for theGeneral Education program at UTK. Implemented an assessment process for the GeneralEducation program.

Served on the Task Force that researched, benchmarked, and designed the initial proposals andplans for the Student Success Center (SSC).

Department Chair, Interior Design, Merchandising and Textiles University of Kentucky (July 1995 – July 2001)

Department of 12-13 faculty offering undergraduate and graduate programs and cooperative extension programs throughout the state. Two staff and six graduate assistants and a budget of over $800K. One of three departments in the College of Human Environmental Sciences.

Department Leadership and Management

Provided leadership for instruction, research, public service, and Cooperative Extensionprograms.

Prepared budget and managed resources to meet department and program goals. Successful ingarnering resources from the university and external sources to upgrade department facilities andmeet program, faculty, and student needs.

Led Department program evaluation efforts and prepared department outcomes assessment forSACS reaffirmation review.

Created a department strategic plan in collaboration with faculty, a vision for 1999-2003, andgoals to support the plan.

Implemented recruitment and retention strategies including student engagement, mentoring andprogression requirements.

Improved instructional space by creating smart classrooms with technology connections, alighting lab and a design gallery. Funded by industry partners and university resources.

Supported faculty development opportunities. All faculty eligible for a sabbatical leave received aleave (eight faculty in six years).

Curriculum and Program Innovation

Led faculty development of a major curriculum revision and implementation of a newmerchandising program. Increased undergraduate enrollment in the merchandising program by36%. Proposed and received a new tenure track faculty line.

Implemented innovative educational program, Design on the Edge, hosting renowned designerssuch as Michael Graves and William McDonough in collaboration with industry partners fromBittners and Brown-Forman. Included a student furniture design competition with production ofthe winning design by Bittners.

Implemented study tours to Italy and France.

Director, Center for Apparel Marketing and Merchandising Oklahoma State University (1991-1993)

Delivered seminars and workshops for small apparel retailers to promote economic growth anddevelopment. Collaborated with state and local retail associations including the Oklahoma MainStreet program.
