Launching the

Common Core State Standards

We need to prepare our students for 21st Century

Learning in an information age with technology innovations that will be developed that we can not

yet even imagine!

Communication Collaboration

Critical Thinking Creativity

In order to prepare our students to become 21st Century Learners they need to master the skills needed for school and work known as the 4c’s.

Page 4: Launching the Common Core State Standards We need to prepare our students for 21 st Century Learning in an information age with technology innovations.

21st Century Skills and the 4c’s are infused in the

Career and College Ready Standards which are the end

goals of the Common Core Standards

Each grade level Common Core Standard spirals with increasing

difficulty from Kindergarten to

Career and College Ready

Career and College Ready Standard examples:

Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when reading or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.

Prepare and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.

Present information, findings, and supporting evidence such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization , development , and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

SMUSD will fully implement the Common Core State Standards

in 2014-2015

We will take the new national test with Common Core

Standards in Spring of 2015

We have two years to make the transition!

Where did the Common Core

standards come from?

• Council of Chief State School Officers and National Governors Association Center for Best Practices, teachers, school administrators, and experts worked together to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare students for college and workforce.

• Standards adopted by most states.

• Currently each state has its own set of standards; student expectations vary from state to state.

Focus-narrow and deepen the scope

Coherence connecting across grade levels

Fluency-speed and accuracy

K-12 Mathematical Practice Standards

Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

Model with mathematics. Use appropriate tools

strategically. Be precise. Look for and make use of

structure. Look for and express regularity

in repeating reasoning.

There are two sets of

Standards in math:

Math Practice Standards

andMath Domain

Standards

Math Domain Standards

Counting and Cardinality (K only)Operations in Algebraic Thinking(K-5)Number and Operations in Base Ten (K-5)Measurement and Data (K-5)Geometry (K-5)Number and Operations-Fractions (grades 3-5)

New Common Core Assessments

Who is creating them?SMARTER-Balanced Assessment Consortium

Who else is using these tests?Currently 29 states

What is the purpose? To develop a comprehensive and innovative assessment system for grades 3-8 and grade 11 in English Language Arts and Mathematics aligned to the Common Core Standards so that students leave high school prepared for post secondary success in college or a career.

Summative assessments aligned to College and Career Readiness Standards

Computer adaptive Administered during last 12 weeks of school year Results will show achievement and growth Question types:

1. Selected Response2. Constructed Response

3. Extended Response 4. Performance –Based Tasks 5. Technology-Enhanced 6. Technology-Enabled

How will the National Assessments be different

than the STAR?
