Reading Partnerships

Most of you are familiar with having a reading

partner. Your reading partner is who you will

turn-and-talk to about your book or discuss the skill

we are learning in mini-lesson.

Today we are going to review what is expected from

your reading partnerships. It will be a good idea for

you to take notes on what we are looking for when

you are with your partner.

Page 16: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

The Purpose of Reading Partners...Reading partners are important because we all have ideas to share and we all want to participate in our lesson. However, we don't have enough time for everyone to share as a whole class every day. Having a reading partner will allow everyone to share their understanding. Partnerships also hold everyone accountable for paying attention and for reading.

Assigning of Reading Partners...Before you ask, NO, you do not get to choose your reading partner. Your partnerships will be assigned by your teacher. These partnerships may change throughout the year. It is important for you to work with your partner in a cooperative manner so you will be a successful team!

Page 17: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

What Partners look like….

~ Partners sit BESIDE each other in group. ~ Partners make EYE CONTACT with each other. They LOOK AT each other.~ Partners' BODY LANGUAGE shows they are INTERESTED and LISTENING.~ Partners' HANDS, EYES, and MINDS are VISIBLY FOCUSED on the TASK and TOPIC.~ Partners' FACES ACKNOWLEDGE what each other are saying by SMILING, FROWNING, NODDING, etc.

Page 18: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

What Partners Sound Like...

~ Only 1 person talking at a time! Take turns!

~ I agree with you because...

~ I disagree with you because...

~ I understand why you think that...

~ That makes sense. I was also thinking...

~ What in the text makes you think that...

~ So I think I hear you saying...

Page 19: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

What partners do...

~ Say something when the other person finishes talking.

~ Stay on TOPIC... talk about and respond to what your partner just

said.

~ Push each other's questions by asking clarifying questions, leading

each other back to the text evidence, and adding to each other's ideas.

~ Hold each other accountable by setting goals, analyzing your

progress, and encouraging your partner to be GOOD READERS and

THINKERS!

Homework

1 week will be letter writing

1 week will be Reading Comprehension Passages

Page 22: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

Why do we write letters every other week?

We will be writing letters to get to know each other. I will be able to learn about you and you can learn about me! We will also be practicing our writing skills in a more fun and interesting way!

Page 23: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

How can you do your very best in the letter?

Make sure you are always reading through the entire letter I write to you. Read this letter a few times before you begin to write your response to me. You can jot down notes while you read to help you begin to brainstorm.

Make sure you include the 5 parts of a letter in your response. Be sure to indent the first line of every new paragraph. Needs to have a heading, greeting, body, closing and signature.

Always respond to all of my questions or topics, you may highlight them in my letter to you so you know what they are.

Page 24: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

How can you do your very best in the letter?

Make sure you are using excellent vocabulary. You can even include the words that you will be learning each morning!

Let your voice shine in your letter! I want to get to know the real you!

When you read your letter ask yourself, “Will my teacher be able to know this is MY letter? “Will my teacher be able to make a mental picture of what I am talking about?

Please make sure you proofread your final letter BEFORE turning it in.

Read Aloud: Wonder

Page 27: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

An introduction to Wonder by R. J. Palacio

August Pullman was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school - until now. He is about to enter fifth grade at Beecher Prep, and if you've ever been the new kid, then you know how hard that can be. The thing is Auggie's just an ordinary kid, with an extraordinary face. But can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, despite appearances?

Classroom Connect Corners

Page 44: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

Purpose: Connect Corners will allow you a space to relax, refocus, and reset your emotions so that you can rejoin the whole group with a thinking brain that is online and ready to go! If we are not using our thinking brain we cannot reach our full potential.

What: All classrooms in the building and specials will have a Connect Corner for students to access.

Classroom Format:● Connect Corner has a number of tools in the toolbox for you to use to get back on track.● Let’s look at some.●

Non-Negotiables:➔ The Connect Corner is not a Time Out Corner.

◆ This as an empowering place where you can connect with your thinking brain in order to rejoin us.➔ The Connect Corner is NOT a Place that is used as a Punishment.

◆ You are not required to spend time in the Connect Corner but it is available for you to use if you feel off task, overwhelmed, or just need a minute to gather your thoughts.

Page 47: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

Real v. Fake Reading...While it is true that teachers do NOT have eyes in the back of their heads, it is also TRUE that we always know when someone is REALLY reading and when someone is FAKE reading! So, what 's the difference?

Page 48: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning
Page 49: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

Who is being hurt by FAKE reading? The teacher or you? When you are not really reading and thinking about the text, you are not getting the most out of your books. Don't think of reading time as a punishment or as boring. Think of it as your 30 minutes that you have to explore a whole new world.

Page 50: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

Building StaminaWhen you are reading a book, article, passage, excerpt, etc. it can be hard to stay focused; especially if you are not the most interested in the topic.

This is a skill we are going to be working on all year. You are going to be working towards a stamina goal each week. This means you will have to train yourself to stay focused on reading and being invested (submarine) in what you are reading. Actively responding and making notes about what you read.

Essential Agreements!

Page 53: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

Essential Question

* What makes a classroom environment successful?

Page 54: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

Essential Agreements are a set of goals that will create a better learning environment. Students will collaborate to create these. Students will also sign their name to display their commitment to those classroom goals. These are not rules!

Page 55: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

Before we begin I want you to answer these questions:

*What helps you do your best at school?

*How would students act in a productive and positive classroom?

*How would students interact with each other?

Share with your neighbor your responses to these questions. What are some key words you noticed from your responses?

Page 56: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

With your partner, think of one essential agreement to add to our list.An example is: "Treat others with respect by using kind words and actions."

Page 57: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

To determine what is going to be apart of our essential agreements. We will do this by giving a thumbs up, if the majority agrees it will be apart of our classroom Essential Agreements

After we are all finished, we will all sign it displaying our commitment to these goals.

Choosing "Just Right" BooksToday, we are going to discuss the importance of choosing "Just Right" books. We will talk about how to describe books, and learn about 2 new strategies to help us select the "Just Right" book for each of you! It is so important not to just give up and abandon books continuously. If you are choosing "Just Right" books, it will be easier for you to finish them!

Page 66: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

Reading is more than just picking up a book and looking at the words on the pages. When selecting a book, it is important that we choose one that "fits" us!

How do we know a book fits us?

There are several different questions we need to think about.

Plot Mountain helps the reader to visualize and understand the beginning, middle, and end of a story.

Page 85: Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations · Launching Reader’s Workshop & Expectations Day 1 . Soft Starts . Purpose: Creating a positive classroom environment -- from the beginning

Exposition is the beginning of the story. We are introduced to the characters and the setting of the story.

Rising Action is when the tension builds up before it reaches its most exciting part in the story.

Climax is the BOOM in the story. Something drastic happens and the story reaches a turning point and changes.

Falling Action is the consequence of the climax. The conflict is about to be resolved, but we don’t know the ending yet. It’s the action after the climax.

Resolution is the end of the story. The conflict or problem is resolved and the story comes to an end.
