LAUNCH OF
LENS Mexico/Central AmericaMexican/Central American Learning Network on Sustainability for curricula development on design for sustainability
LeNS is a 3 years project (Dec/2007 - Dec/2010) funded by the European Commission (Asia Link Programme, EuropAid), involving 7 design schools in Europe and Asia
promote a new generation of Asian and European designers capable of designing for sustainable Product-Service System innovation
(through a new generation of design educators)
LENS’ SCOPE
a web platform allowing interested teachers to download open source and copyleft tools and learning resources (slideshows, texts, audio-videos, etc.) that could be modified/remixed and reused, i.e. adapted according to each teacher’s specific didactic needs, institutional requirements and local context peculiarities
MAIN OUTPUT: Open Learning E-Package on DfS focused on PSS
OLEP: INTRO TO MAIN FUNCTIONALITIES
a quick tour1. download/view learning resources by teacher/course/year
2. download/view learning resources by content/type
3. uploading a course (learning resources collection)
4. Download and regenerate a LeNS based web site
e.g. a TEACHER wants to set-up/up-date a course on DfS and wants to search for appropriate learning resources to
DOWNLOAD, and modify/remix and REUSE in her/his course
e.g. a STUDENT wants to VIEW learning resources of any of the teacher of the network

A “REGENERATIVE”, OPEN AND COPYLEFT LEARNING-BY-SHARING WEB PLATFORM
THE SAME LENS WEB PLATFORM IS DOWNLOADABLE AS OPEN SOURCE AND COPYLEFT> any educational institution, teacher, sustainability-focused network, can generate a new LeNS-based web-platform: reconfiguring it by re-defining partners (the scientific board), the sustainability focus, the geographical representation
[tehy have to receive a permission]> any new generated web platform upload learning resources independently, thought any platform is linked with the others

LAUNCH OF MEXICO/CENTRAL AMERICA
MEXICO/CENTRAL AMERICAN LEARNING NETWORK ON SUSTAINABILITY FOR CURRICULA DEVELOPMENT ON DESIGN FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Sandra Molina Mata, Ramirez Lozano AlejandroLeNS Mexico/Central America promoters
LeNS MEXICO/CENTRAL AMERICA ON DfS: WIN-WIN OPPORTUNITY
FOR THE MEXICO/CENTRAL AMERICA DESIGN HEIs A LeNS-LIKE NETWORK:. is cost efficient: the web platform is free of charge. is time efficient: teachers need simply to up-load slideshows (eventually recorded), texts, etc. they prepare for their lectures. is knowledge-building efficient: focused copyleft resources speed-up learning-by-sharing-for teaching, i.e. remix/reuse others’ learning resources. is inclusive: DfS focus to be defined by Mexican/Central American partners. is imperative: sustainability must have a Mexican/Central American perspective. increases potential for public fundraising: with an established network it is easier to successfully apply for any public fund. increases potential for private fundraising: reputation and visibility to attract consultancy on design for sustainability
... THE RIGHT OPPORTUNITY
. imperative to have a Mexican/Central American perspective
. education is very much the base of every change
. support and mutual interest with the ongoing LeNS EU Asia-Link funded project
AT THE RIGHT MOMENT …
. sustainability is now being incorporated in the worldwide agenda and in all levels
. growing demand of design for sustainability
promote a new generation of mexican/central american design educators and designers capable of designing for sustainability
with a learning-by-sharing strategy, based on an open source a copyleft ethos supported by a regenerated LeNS web platform, to be fed with an articulated set of didactic materials (learning resources), being a disciplinary ground on Design for Sustainability in mexico/central america , free to use and adaptable by (any) teacher
