Books for Kids Do you or your family have children’s books that are no longer needed? Burnie-based Library Aid International Inc. (LAI) collects used books and educational resources for children aged 3-16 years, sorts and then ships them to needy schools in developing countries.

DeBruyn’s Transport generously transports the books for free from any of their depots to Burnie and the sorting is assisted by Work for the Dole placements and MyPathways job training agencies. So far, LAI has been able to send 180,000 books to over 200 schools! Needed

Picture books, easy chapter books, fiction and non-fiction, classics, stories on audio tape or CD, atlases and encyclopaedias (post 1991), thesauruses, textbooks, biographies for children, National Geographic and other educational magazines, crossword and puzzle books, bibles and teacher resources. Not needed

Books that are: damaged or scribbled in, clearly out of date or are Australia-specific (e.g. Australian history, atlases, etc.) Why not help this small but worthy organisation if you can? Books can be left at the office.

Community Rapid Response Service (ComRRS) This service was launched by the Tasmanian State Government in June 2016 and provides quality care for people with chronic and complex illnesses, within the community. Treating patients out of hospitals frees up beds so that hospitals can provide more medical and surgical services for more patients. The patient’s care is shared between their GP, community nursing and other health professionals either in the patient’s home or in the community at a health centre or residential aged care facility. Examples of health issues that can be addressed by this service are: assistance with medications, wound dressings, personal care, nutrition advice and referrals to ongoing services. If you think this service could help you or a person you know, contact the Community Rapid Response service Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 4.30pm seven days a week on 6777 3021, or at other times on 0438 395 023. If you require assistance between 9.30pm and 8.30am your call will be redirected to GP Assist. For more information go to: Community Rapid Response Service.

School Magazine and Calendars The Launceston School for Seniors Inc. 2018 Annual is now

available for sale. As always, the magazine showcases many of the school’s activities throughout the year including bus trips, class activities, our writers and some special occasions. Be sure to pick up your copy for only $3.00. 2019 Calendars featuring our members’

wonderful photographs, are also available for sale for $5.00 (small) and $10.00 (large). Be sure to pick up your copies from the office, or at our End of Year Luncheon. The safety of all members is our priority! Any accident or incident involving injury – no matter whether it is seen as trivial or serious – must be reported on the Accident/Incident Report Form.

Forms can be found in the first aid boxes in the foyer, in Room 1 just outside the Office and also in the Office. Tutors should complete the form for the relevant member and then forward it to the Office so we have a record of all injuries occurring in School for Seniors programs. Thank you.

To make the most of our limited parking, could all members please park within the white lines and ensure their vehicles do not encroach on the carpark. Please remember too that the carpark is one way anti-clockwise!

Members are issued with a name tag each term, and your emergency contact details should be written on the back. This ensures that in the event of an illness, injury or accident, emergency services personnel can easily contact your loved ones. And should they be required, a defibrillator and sick bags are located in the foyer of the main building.

We have secure Wi-Fi at the school and encourage our members to use it whilst in the buildings. Log-ins are Telstra 272644 for the main building and Telstra 086F for the office building. Please contact Vicki for the relevant password.

(departs Glenara Lakes at 8.15am for 8.30am) There are more to chickens than eggs and feathers! Today Rob Nichols founder of Nichols Chickens will join us on the coach. He

will share the story of his successful business and what makes their products different. We are sure to learn a few new facts about chickens.

Lunch today will be at the Thai Imperial Restaurant at the Axeman’s Hall of Fame in Latrobe. Afterwards we’ll have time to browse through the many market stalls before we continue along the Frankford Highway to Exeter. The Beehive is a relatively new venture owned and operated by Rebecca and Tristan Campbell. They started with just one hive and now offer a large variety of honey as well as honey alcohol and other products. You will be intrigued to hear their story. Moores Hill is a family owned and operated winery on the West Tamar and we will have time for a visit and tasting before heading back. $77 per person includes morning tea, tours and lunch. This newsletter, in living colour, is emailed to everyone able to receive it (with paper copies still available at the school). If you haven’t given us your email address and would like to be included on the listing, please email Vicki at: Secretary. And each time you register, please ensure your email address is clearly written on the registration form (even if you have provided it previously), along with your street address and telephone number. Did you know that website links in the newsletter (blue and underlined) are ‘live’?
