Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) was a churchmusician fromanearlyage,asinger,organistandviol player, and was strongly influenced by theoperas composed in his day. He wrotemany fineoperas himself which were highly innovative fortheir time. Itwasduringhis tenure asmaestrodicappella at St. Mark’s beginning in 1613 that hisfamespread.Inhisearly70s,justafewyearsbeforehis death, Monteverdi published two largecompilationsof his vocalworkswritten inVenice,mostly forpresentation at SaintMark’s, called theSelva morale et spirituale (Moral and SpiritualForest).TodaywepresenttheMagnificatà8vocifromthatcollection.Itisextremelyexpressiveanddeclamatoryinstyle.Asinhisoperas,themusicisdramaticandcommunicative.TheMagnificattextwhichoriginatesintheGospelofLuke,hasbeenpartofliturgiesofCatholic,EasternOrthodoxandProtestantChristianchurchesforcenturiesandhasbeensettomusicbyinnumerablecomposers.LukeportraysMaryasthesingerofthissongofpraisetoGodandhumbleacceptanceofherpregnancy.

FrancescoCavalli(1602-1676)studiedunderMonteverdiandindeedworkedcloselywithhimfortherestofMonteverdi’slife.MonteverdiwasrebuildingtheneglectedmusicprogramatthebasilicaofSanMarcoinVeniceandhiredyoungCavalliasasinger,stillinhisearlyteens.CavallieventuallybecamemusicdirectoratSanMarco.WhileCavalliwasbestknownforhisoperasanddevelopmentofthatgenreinVenice(hewrote42!),healsowrotesacredmusic,bothvocalandinstrumental.Thisevening,weenjoyCavalli’sCanzonaà3,a canzona being a type of 16th&17th century Italian instrumentalmusic, often in three sections and inimitationofluteorkeyboardtranscriptionsofFrenchchansons.BiagioMarini(c.1587-1663)wasanorthernItalianvirtuosoviolinistandcomposerandheldpositionsinBelgium, Germany and Italy including playing under Monteverdi at San Marco in Venice. His music isconsideredinventiveandboldforthetime,usingavarietyofstringeffectsnotcommonlyused.ThisSonatasopralaMonicaisbasedonapopularfolktuneLaMonicawhichatthetimehadtextthattoldthestoryofayounggirlwhodidnotwanttobecomeanun.Interestingly,partsofthesamemelodywerethebasisofJeandeBrébeuf’s1642CanadianHuronCarol.Henry Purcell (1659-1695) is one of England’s most celebrated composers and arguably the mostcelebratedEnglishBaroquecomposernotwithstandingtheGerman-bornG.F.HandelwhomovedtoEnglandandbecameanaturalizedBritishsubjectafterPurcell’sdeath.Purcelldiedatage36,nevertraveledoutsidehiscountryandyetleavesavastandvariedoeuvrewrittenforCourt,Churchandprivatecommissioners.Hismusicdidn’ttraveloutsideEnglandmuchduringhislifeeitherbutofcourseisenjoyedeverywheretoday.PurcellwasorganistatWestminsterAbbeyaswellasoftheChapelRoyal.ItislikelythatBehold,IBringYouGladTidingswaswritten forChristmas1687 for theChapelRoyal service, surprisinglyhis only anthemwrittenspecificallyforChristmasDay.

DietrichBuxtehude’sbirthplacein1637isdisputed–eitherLübeckinGermanyorHelsingborg,nowinSwedenbutthenpartofDenmark.HisearliestknownmusicalworkwasforaboutadecadeinHelsingborgandtheninHelsingorbeforehebecameorganistofMarienkircheinLübeckwhereheworkedforcloseto40years.Hisreputationwasconsiderable;Handel,Telemann,andJSBachallvisitedandevenstudiedwithhim.Primarilyanorganistbutwithadefiniteinterestinvocalmusic,muchofhisoutputhasbeenlostanditisonlyoverthelastseveraldecadesthathisimportancehasbeenmadeclear.Hiscompositionalstylesvariedgreatly,influencedbybothGermanandItaliancomposersaswellashisowninventiveness.Itappearsthatmanyofhisvocalworkswerewrittenpurelyaspersonalartisticinspirationandonlyafewcommissionedorpartofhisofficialduties.

FranzTunder(1614-1667)wastheorganistatMarienkircheinhishomecityofLübeck,Germanyfor26yearsuntilhisdeath.Buxtehudewashissuccessorand,aswasnotunusualthen,marriedTunder’sdaughterAnnaMargarethe.TunderbeganatraditionofAbendmusiken(eveningmusic)whichwerefreeweeklypublicconcertsgivenatMarienkirche,primarilyforbusinessmen.Atfirst,onlyorganmusicwasincludedbutintime,Tunderaddedotherinstrumentalistsandvoices.Themusicwassacredbutusuallynotappropriateforchurchservices.OftherathermodestamountofTunder’scompositionaloutputstillsurviving,thegenreofvocalconcertoswrittenforAbendmusikcomprisethebulk.ItislikelythattheAdvent-themedHosiannademSohneDavidwascomposedbyTunderforoneoftheseconcerts.

Laudatemeanspraise,andforLaudateSingers,everyconcertisajoyfulcelebration.Nowcelebratingits27thseason,currentartisticdirectorLarsKaariofoundedLaudateSingersin1995.Thischamberchoircontinuestoskillfullyandpassionatelypresentrepertoire thatspanscenturies,culturesandgenres.Thechoiralsostrivestofosterthedevelopmentofprofessionalmusiciansandenrichtheculturalfabricofourcommunity.

LaudateSingers isacommittedchampionofCanadianchoralmusic, commissioningandperformingnewCanadianworkseveryseasoninadditiontomentoringandnurturingyoungcomposersthroughacomposer-in-residence programme. Over the years, almost 70 pieces have been added to Canadian choral artsrepertoire. This season, we are pleased to have an accomplished film, television, games and concertcomposerwhowillbelearningtheartofchoralwritingasourcomposer-in-residence.AndréLuizMachadowillwritetwopiecesforus.

LaudateSingershasbeenpleasedtoundertakestimulatingandinnovativepartnershipswithhighcaliberlocal performers and ensembles such as the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra, theNorth Shore CelticEnsemble, Tangissimo, Denis Bédard, Ariel Barnes, Heidi Krutzen and many fine period baroqueinstrumentalists.ThechoirwashonouredtorepresentNorthVancouverataChiba(Japan)CulturalFestival.

The choir has recorded seven CDs,with the latest release,Mystics&Lovers, being a collaborationwithVancouverInter-CulturalOrchestrafeaturingtwomajorworksbyMosheDenburgandFarshidSamandari.

LARSKAARIOisfounderandartisticdirectorofLaudateSingers.Hehasbuiltanimpressivereputationasaconductor,singerandeducatorinhisnativeVancouver.Larshasforgedvaluableand lastingrelationshipswithleadingmusiciansandorganizations inBC’sartsscene. He is keenly interested in commissioning and performing Canadian music. Mr.Kaarioretiredin2021aftera35-yearcareeratCapilanoUniversitywherehewasDirectorofChoralStudiesintheDiplomaofMusicProgram,leadingCapilanoUniversitySingersandCapilanoUniversityFestivalChorus.Hewasalso thehead instructor intheUniversity’sConductingCertificateProgram.LarshasappearedasconductorwithsuchnotablelocalensemblesasthePacificBaroqueOrchestra,VancouverPhilharmonicOrchestra,Theatre

Under the Stars and others. He has also appeared as soloist in Bach’s BMinorMass, Handel’sMessiah,Mozart’sRequiemandmorewithmanyofBC’smajorchoirsandorchestras.

PARAGONSINGERSisamixed intermediate-levelchoir formed inSeptember2021.PartofLaudateSingersSociety,ParagonSingersplanstofocusonmajorchoral/orchestralworksalongwithshorterchoralgemsbotholdandnew.LarsKaarioisdirector.OnDecember6,itsinauguralconcertwasgiventoinvitedguests.

Our 2021-2022 season plans are expecting a gradual return to the "good ol' days". While the following are all currently in the works, more detail will be announced as each event gets closer, knowing that some things just might change!

• Free Family Christmas Concert, December 19, 3pm at West Vancouver United Church. This is a lively concert for young families.

• Cap Classics Concert, March 4, BlueShore Theatre, Capilano University. A short varied noon hour concert for students and open to the public.

• Main series concert, program TBA, March 5 at Pyatt Hall Vancouver, and March 12 at Highlands United Church, North Vancouver.

• Fundraiser gala, April 2 - Hopeful plans are for a return to our traditional extravaganza dinner, concert and auction at Seymour Golf & Country Club. Hurray!

• Guest appearance at Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra's 20th Anniversary concert, April 30, Norman Rothstein Theatre, Vancouver.

• Carmina Burana and Mozart's Requiem, May 13 & 14 at BlueShore Theatre, Capilano University. Laudate Singers, Paragon Singers and the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra.
