COLONIZATION OF SOUTH AMERICA BY SPAIN & PORTUGAL

• The two European powers reached an agreement to divide South America. In the resulting Treaty of Tordesillas (1494), Portugal gained control over the land that became present-day Brazil.

Latin America - Physical Geography

• Andes Mountains – runs along the western side of South America; starts in Venezuela to the north, then passes through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile

• Atacama Desert – a desert plateau located on the Pacific coast of South America, west of the Andes mountains

• Amazon Rainforest – covers much of northwestern Brazil and extends into Colombia, Peru and other South American countries; it is the world’s largest tropical rainforest

• Amazon River – it is the largest river in the world river by discharge volume of water in (and by some definitions it is the longest)
