I’m very pleased to introduce the newest member of our Board of Directors, Deanna Lane. Deanna has
held senior leadership roles with a number of professional Institutes and her focus has always been on
member engagement, relevance, clear communication and delivering value to members through advocacy
and thought leadership.
“I am delighted to have joined the Board of the Safety Institute of Australia as an Independent Director,
particularly at this time of its evolution and I am keen to contribute to its work, both for and with health and
safety professionals in all spheres and industries.”– Deanna Lane.
It has been a busy year at the SIA and I’m looking forward to continuing our growth into the new year. On

Queensland’s Rockhampton Magistrates Court
recently fined a company $80,000 after it was
found that inadequate supervision and training
for a young inexperienced labourer led to an
incident in which a trenching machine
amputated his hand.
Timber company fined $60,000 afterworker loses thumb and fingers todocking saw
The Brisbane Magistrates Court recently fined
a timber company $60,000 for failing to protect
a young inexperienced worker who lost a
thumb and three fingers to a docking saw on 7
October 2015.

Building company fined $52,500 afterapprentices risked falling from height
An Ocean Grove building company in Victoria
has been fined $52,500 without conviction for
safety breaches that exposed workers,
including three apprentices, to the risk of
serious injury from falls from height.
Mining company fined $30,000 for failingto report dangerous roll-over incidents
NSW Quarry Services was recently fined
$30,000 by the NSW Local Court and ordered
to pay legal costs of $25,000 for failing to
report two dangerous roll-over incidents to the
NSW Department of Planning and
Environment’s Resources Regulator.

Safe Work Australia: new guidelines forchemical storage in workplace
Safe Work Australia recently announced new
guidelines for the safe identification,
positioning, storage and management of
chemicals in the workplace.
NSW: Safety blitz on falls from heightsin construction industry
A 12-month safety blitz to reduce falls from
heights in the construction industry was
recently launched by SafeWork NSW, with
inspectors visiting 1000 sites after nine
workers died in 2017 and many more were
injured in an alarming spike in the number of
reported falls from heights.
SA: Safety alert issued over working inthe heat
SafeWork SA recently issued a safety alert
reminding employers to take measures to
manage the risks associated with heat stress
and solar UV radiation as South Australia’s
summer takes hold with hot weather forecasts
the next two days.
NT: Safety alert issued over asbestos inbunsen burner gauze mats
WorkSafe NT recently issued a safety alert
regarding the possible presence of asbestos in
Bunsen burner gauze mats with ceramic
centres, commonly used in laboratories.
