Kay TownAndrew Kay is struggling with the fact that his ownpast is now a history
SPONSORED BYBARDSLEY’S FISH & CHIPS
G rowing up as I did in the cold and barrenindustrial wastes of
the North West, I have strongmemories of a life gone by. It came home to me quiterecently on a visit to see myparents where they now livein Somerset, as far awayfrom the cobbles and backalleys of my childhood asyou could wish to get.
I had bought my mother a big photoalbum and all the appropriate bits andpieces required to put the family photosin some kind of order. I erroneouslythought that she might enjoycataloguing our past so that my brotherand I and his children might know andunderstand who our ancestors were.
Sadly the idea fell on fairly stonyground as my mother rather morbidlyassumed that this was me preparing herfor her oncoming demise. Frankly, theway she bounces back from all that besets her, she will live forever. That, ofcourse, is good news but the sad thing is that she still has drawers and boxesof pictures, most of them family members that I simply cannot put a name to.
I came away and started to put together a family tree on a well knownwebsite. It was pretty easy to start as I can name most of my family goingback to my grandparents’ generation. But as it went further back I started touncover all manner of family secrets and mysteries. Serial wedders, missing cousins, odd deaths, illegitimacy (very heavily disguised), childrenof one family member raised as the child of another... talk about a can ofworms, I had tears rolling down my face from laughing so much.
Whoever thinks that permissive society started in the 1960s is verysadly mistaken. My god, they were all at it! One ancestor, a parson’sdaughter, eloped with a French fisherman. I ask you, it puts most of myantics in the shade. It cheered Mum up too, raking over the past andrevealing the stories and scandals.
The photos as yet remain in boxes and drawers, an archive of history ofwhich I am now a part. What shocked me most though was not the scandal,no I can cope with that. No, the real shock was seeing that the familypictures of me as a child, once familiar and contemporary, are now archivematerial, historical documents mainly in black and white in which I amwearing clothes that look like museum items. How ageing that is.
Much as we love the minimal new builds of the day, here at Latest Homeswe are still pretty keen on a spot of tradition. And what is more traditionalthan a classic bit of timbered styling? This splendid house off Dyke Roadhas lashings of character on the outside and in but with all the luxuries ofa contemporary new building.
With five bedrooms, beautiful fixtures and fittings and a location with realcache, this stunning family home is certainly fit for a queen, it does after allhave a look of Anne of Cleves House in Lewes located just a few miles away.
And just a few minutes away at Theatre Royal Brighton there will be yetanother of Henry VIII’s brides when Anne Boleyn, a play about his notorioussecond wife by equally notorious Howard Brenton opens. news>NEW YEAR PROPERTYSALES ARE NOW ONInitial reports from various ‘thinktanks’ are predicting anothertough year ahead for smallbusinesses and more relevantly, the sales market. However themajority of Brightonians (andHove-ites) are taking a morepositive outlook on the year. With an abundance ofenthusiastic London buyerslooking to get their hands onsome of our diverse choice ofproperty to suit all along with a
continuingly flourishing lettingsmarket offering greatopportunities for investment,Brighton and Hove remainsstubborn in its reluctance tofollow the national trend into afurther declining market. Anincrease in lending wouldcertainly assist in allowing moremovement especially with firsttime buyers forced to rentinstead of buying.
Louise Brice of Brices SalesAnd Lettings commented:“Following on from a steady 2011
this year has started positively andI believe we can look forward toanother busy year and moreimportantly another step towards afully recovered and reliableproperty market.”www.brices.co.uk
>DOWN-LETTINGFLOURISHINGDownsizing has become commonpractice in freeing up capital, butselling off the family home may notbe the only way to subsidise hard-hit pensions.
“With many potential buyersstruggling to secure a mortgage, letting your family home rather thanselling offers a strong alternative,”
said ARLA’s President, Tim Hyatt. “Rental returns stand at an
average of 6.1 per-cent this year, according to research from KnightFrank. This substantially beats thereturns on many other currentinvestment opportunities.
“ARLA members also report that achievable rent levels areincreasing, while demand for goodquality rental properties remainshigh. While market conditionsremain so inclined, it could beprudent to let out the family home, and use the monthly rental incometo invest in renting a smallerretirement home.” **According to the ARLA Members’ Surveyof the Private Rented Sector, Q3 2011

A choice of three, brand new, energy efficient houses - one detached and twosemi-detached in the favoured New Church Road area close to the seafront and lagoon.
A building that wasrecently shown tome by Andy Winter,
chief executive of BHT,was the First Base DayCentre on MontpelierPlace in central Brighton.I thoroughly enjoyedwriting about thatwonderful facility whichserves as an open doorhaven for homeless andother vulnerable people. I met with Andy onceagain to see another BHTundertaking – the PhaseOne Project on Oriental Place.
Phase One consists of four Regencytown houses that were amalgamatedduring the 1930s. The combined structurewas run as The St Ives Hotel until theowners retired in 1964, at which point itbecame a YWCA that was known as TheRegency House Hotel.
The Regency Project, a photographicbook by Richard Rowland, gives all sortsof clues as to the dreadful conditionof the Grade II Listed buildings whenBHT took over in 2002. Olli Blair ofDRP Architects (now of ABIRArchitects, a firm that I oftenmention) was responsible forplanning the project.
Many residence stayed during theworks as the project was divided intotwo halves. Two of the four buildingswere vacated and transformed, followed by the other two once theiroccupants had been moved across. Lath and plaster partitions, woodchipwallpaper and orange-stained decorative pine boards were all consigned tothe skip. It is quite clear from Richard Rowland’s photographs, and from thefriendly and dedicated BHT team, that the buildings were in a terrible stateprior to the housing trust’s involvement.
Merging four townhouses into one gives rise to the inevitable problem ofthere being too many front doors and staircases, whilst original corridors runback-to-front, rather than across. In the case of Phase One, two of the frontdoors have been removed, but the extra staircases are really a blessing whenit comes to fire precautions. As for corridors, on the ground floor at least, space has been taken from the large front rooms to create a logicalthoroughfare between the buildings – it works.
BHT’s uncompromising drive to provide quality accommodation for thevulnerable, and Olli Blair’s architectural flair, proved a winning combination. ASussex Heritage Trust Award and a Green Apple Award were certainly deserved.Get in touch: [email protected] or www.buildingopinions.com
E ven though I’m nowvery much the less-youthful side of 40,
I have never succumbedto Internet dating. Thusfar, I’ve still been able tomeet people by going outto the pub in the normalway, although most ofthe people I’ve metrecently have beendeeply unsuitable orfundamentally flawed inone way or another.
I recently went on apost-Christmas shoppingtrip to New York with TheBig Daughter and, theweek before we went, hadthe hair-brained idea thatI would go onto anAmerican dating site andarrange a date with astranger for one of thenights I was there. Even ifit all went very badly, atleast I’d have somethingto write about.
With two days to spare,I cobbled together a‘profile’, and stated that Iwas a Brit who would bein New York in January. I stuck up a rather hazy picture taken of me at arecent Christmas party and waited for the offers to flood in. They trickledmore than flooded, but trickle they did in a slightly lacklustre way.
‘Your hot!’ proclaimed one man from Queens, with an enthusiasm which didnothing to detract from his appalling grasp of grammar. I was tempted tomessage back asking ‘My hot what? My hot water bottle? My hot dinner?’Several messages later, which included a dearth of ‘your sexy’, ‘your funny’and ‘your cute’ I surmised that Internet dating was definitely the way forwardas miss-spellers could be eliminated at the touch of a button. Having saidthis, I spent the best part of the last decade with a man whose first post-datetext to me read ‘apoligies for this late text’. Luckily for him, his cutenessoutweighed his lack of verbal dexterity. Besides, I later found out he was agreat speller, he just couldn’t see very well, which probably explains why hefell for me in the first place...
After more of this grammatical suicide, rather too much mention of ‘TheLord’ and a message from a 7’2” tall (I found this hard to believe) man inKuala Lumpur asking me to be his ‘fried’(a cannibal perhaps?), I decided thatI should perhaps choose someone, rather than let them choose me.
Seven foot cannibals and poor-spellers were dispatched to the great E binin the ether and I quickly rushed through my suggested matches. Only one ofthem looked like the sort of person I’d usually date, so I sent him a messagesaying I’d be in his ‘hood from tomorrow, if he fancied meeting up’. I clickedsend and sat back awaiting a response... follow me on twitter @robert_nemeth

M y birthday is at theend of December. If Iget more than one
present and more than onefriend in town for a drink, then I am ecstatic. I guessin life the less you aregiven, the more appreciativeyou are when you doreceive. It sounds odd but Iwish my daughter had beengiven less presents forChristmas. Will she expectthat much every year now? Will Father Christmas be abaddie who shouldn't bebelieved in anymore if her2012 Christmas stockingconsists of five satsumas, atangerine and only that onebeautiful shiny red bike?
When I was little Iremember one mainpresent at Christmas. But because my daughter israised in a lone parentfamily she receives presents from not just Santa, but myself, Nana, myboyfriend and his family and then also the nan, gran, aunties, cousins etcfrom her other family on her dad’s side, not to mention her dad. That’s a lot ofthank you cards. That’s a lot for a five year old to truly appreciate. I don’t seehow she will hold any value in things if they come so easily. Is it mean of meto wish she got less? It’s because I want her to grow up with a sense of value. To want something for months and then feel the pleasure and excitement offinally getting what she desired. So she will look after that object, value it.
She has beautiful gifts but I’m sure she can hardly remember who gave herwhat. With my daughters’ family being far away they of course want to showtheir love in a gift, as they don't see her as often, so our tiny flat is full ofstuff this January. She now has six pairs of gloves, three new hats and twoSylvanian cars! Yes, we are a two car family! I need a wedding type gift listwith everything ticked off to avoid duplicates. 1. Red shiny bike 2. Tangerine3. Satsumas, (no clementines please...). You may think I'm being ungratefulbut it’s exactly ungratefulness I'm worried about. I do appreciate the cost andthought gone into all these beautiful presents, I just worry a small child won’tif that’s what they get used to. Perhaps because my birthday is so close toChristmas, I’m used to combined presents explaining why I am shocked bythe amount of gifts she has received. Maybe I’m being old fashioned. I justwonder that when things are easy to get, with no desire built for them, if it’spossible to be content, to be happy with what you’ve got. My boyfriend gaveme a gold watch for my birthday, I’d wanted one for ages! He remembered! Iwas very appreciative exclaiming; “Thank you! If I’d bought it myself I’d havebought one with a round shape face though.” Oh – it seems quantity of giftsas a child has no bearing on ungratefulness.

Aweek late here’s my main resolution: stop getting annoyed when mychildren are being, well, there’s no other word for it – childish.Sometimes it’s when they are doing those things that utterly sum up
childhood, that I’m either impatient or, and again there’s no other word forit – distracted. Often it’s the moments that you should later look on withparticular fondness that, in the present, I get particularly moany about.
For example, puddles. Recently, we went to Middle Farm, and Youngest™took massive delight in jumping inevery single puddle that he saw.Water rose up his trouser legs in acapillary action. It was bitterlycold, and I could hear my own Dad’svoice in my head saying he’d get achill. But while Youngest™ was loving itand passers by looked on with mistyeyes, I spent my whole time ineffectivelytelling him off.
Adults don’t normally jump in puddles. This is probably their loss. We don’t runnormally either, except as ‘exercise’ orwhen we’re about to miss a bus, or thatfunny little skip-run, when a car has letyou cross the road and you’re showingwilling. Kids run all the time. A child willsuddenly run from one side of theroom to the other just in order toget there quicker, or startrunning when going to the PostOffice simply for the hell –or heaven – of it. They’re noteven trying to lose weight.
Puddles and randomrunning are pure childhood, the favourite memories ofthe future. And there’s metelling them to ‘stop doingthat’ or ‘slow down’ whileit’s happening.
Relax – that’s the key.Enjoy these moments. I actually said the phrase, ‘play something lessexciting’ to The Boy the other day. It was bath time which meant that it wasnearing night-time and I was desperate for Youngest™ to go to sleep. TheBoy was actually doing a good job of keeping Youngest™ amused, but I wasbusy interjecting.
At the other end of the day I can get impatient when The Boy is asking meto choose which Ben10 character to draw. I’m sometimes a bit short with himand won’t even pick from a choice of two. Yes, this is mainly because it’s 6:25and when I find it hard enough to do quite simple tasks (e.g. breathe in,breathe out) but it’s not really his fault, I’ve had a bad night’s sleep.
So that’s my resolution, I’ve decided to stop being Grumpy. As we near theend of the pantomime season, answers on a postcard as to which of theother six I should try and become.
“A child will suddenly runfrom one end of a room tothe other just in order toget there quicker”
K itchens are getting slicker, sleeker andaltogether cleverer. If yours is looking alittle tired, it might be time to drag it into
the 21st century. You could opt for a total kitchenmakeover, but think before you splash all thecash – new units, lights or worktops could be allthe sprucing up you need to inject some sense ofcolour. From simple makeover to full facelift, allowLatest Interiors to help you cook something up.
The full montyThis year, we want open spaces and no clutter.Although quirky, free-standing farmhouse-stylekitchens remain popular, more and more of us areopting for a modern, sleek look that makes themost of available space. Open-plan kitchen andliving remains the contemporary ideal – many newbuilds incorporate an open-plan cook/eat/livingarea. If you’re stuck with a bad design or need atotal rebuild, then the choice of kitchen styles andforms is yours. In older properties, the trend is tocombine kitchen and dining areas or knockthrough between front and back rooms to createspace. If you’re going for a totally new kitchen, wewouldn’t be surprised if you chose gloss-finishedunits in a single, bold colour (red, black, ivory, purple and grey are all popular), with compositestone chunky worktops, a glass splashback, andsleek back-lighting.
Unit valuesIf you don’t need a full re-model, then simplyreplacing tired and broken old units with new, smart storage – and some shiny new doors – will
give your kitchen a much needed face and space-lift. Modern units don’t just expand your storagecapacity – they can provide you with some prettyspecialist functions, too. Simple pull-out cornerand larder units could double your space. But ifyou’re prepared to spend a bit, you could addsome pretty cool functionality to your kitchen:Integrated waste and recycling units, built-insteam oven, cooling and warming drawers, watersofteners (very handy round here, wheresediment from hard water will mark darker graniteand stone worktops), integrated weighing scalesand wine coolers. It’s all pretty cool stuff, actuallyand new doors will make it all look great.
Wonderful work topsTatty worktops are easy to replace, and there’s ahuge range of finishes. Chunky natural stone, concrete and Corian (composite stone) worktopsin simple black, grey or white look great, andremain a key trend. Corian and stone are also
INTERIORS 17
hard-wearing, and should give many long years ofservice. Corian and other composites can bemoulded to seamless, custom shapes, includingintegrated sink bowls and drainers. Cast concretealso combines good looks and versatility. Glass, stainless steel and laminate worktops give a cool, modern finish. K ay and Norman Rose are not your average British couple. The location oftheir home has been determined by Mrs Rose’s profession. When, inJanuary 2011, Kay’s teaching job was to take the couple from Suffolk to
Brighton, the pair decided to rent first, buy later, to acquaint themselves withtheir new location. They chose Explore Living’s newly restored 1930s Art Decodevelopment in Saltdean as their first foray into the Brighton market and withinsix months decided they had found their dream Sussex home.
Having not moved for a while and this potentially being their last suchventure, the Roses felt under no obligation to buy before they relocated. “We hadlived in Suffolk for almost 20 years,” said Mr Rose. “We had never been based inBrighton, but my job in Government Relations has meant a two week stay in thiscosmopolitan city for many years during the annual party political conferencesand so I know the centre well, but our unfamiliarity with the surrounding areameant we weren’t prepared to rush our buying decision.
“Explore Living offered the ideal solution and it took us less than six monthsto agree that Grand Ocean offered us the life we wanted to live.”
“We are delighted the Roses chose Grand Ocean as their home,” said JohnInglis, sales and marketing director for Explore Living. “The couple rented aproperty first and loved the development so much that they decided to buy.Purchasing a home is such an important and expensive undertaking and‘getting it wrong’ can cause untold heartache; Kay and Norman now have aproperty that they can genuinely call home.”
“We have the best of all worlds: living on the outskirts of a city, but on theborders of the countryside, in a stunning location, that is convenient for both ourjobs,” Mr Rose continued. “We have the amenities of Saltdean, while only being15 minutes from the centre of Brighton, with terrific transport links to the shopsand restaurants, and there are some beautiful walks. Most important for usthough has been Grand Ocean itself. We have spacious grounds, an extremelywell kitted out and professionally run gym and the interior standards of thebuilding are of an exceptional standard. The building has been restored to itsformer glory and we don’t hear a peep from our neighbours, which we haveattributed to the standard of the workmanship.”
Asked whether they had made the right decision to buy at Grand Ocean, MrRose was emphatic. “It would have been extremely difficult, if not impossible,to get a deal that suited us more. The buying process was pleasant andproductive and the company was extremely fair. We have always lived in adetached property, so moving to an apartment was a leap of faith for us, butwe couldn’t be happier.”
Grand Ocean is a collection of 180 one- and two-bedroom apartments, located on the doorstep of the rolling Sussex Downs, with breathtaking viewsof the South East Coast. Explore Living has completed the restoration of theoriginal hotel building, as well as the construction of four new wings, the finaltwo of which are now released for sale, providing an ideal coastal retreat, perfect for couples, downsizers and first time buyers alike.
Each home offers the very best in modern living with under-floor heating, a video-entry system, pre-wiring for Sky+ and provision for wall-mountedTVs. The stylish kitchens benefit from a thoughtful, ergonomic design thatmaximises storage space and integrated appliances including: oven, hob andextractor, dishwasher, fridge/freezer and freestanding washer/dryer.
These exceptional apartments are priced from £179,995. For moreinformation please call Explore Living on 0845 873 9054, [email protected] or visit www.exploreliving.co.uk

respect of those who are volunteeringand also in respect of those whowant time off to watch the Games. If you introduce a Policy, everybodywill know where they stand, whichshould avoid problems later. Perhapsa simple “first come first served”would work best to ensure that thereare enough staff at work to meet thebusiness’s needs during the Games.
Q. I have my suspicions that a fewstaff will “pull a sickie” to watcheither the Olympics or Euro 2012.What can I do to avoid this and whatcan I do if it happens?
A. This is a tricky question becauseproving someone wasn’t ill after theyhave taken a day’s absence is always
Q. A couple of my employees arevolunteer staff at the Olympics thissummer. Do I need to grant them timeoff and, if so, do I need to pay them?A. Your staff don’t have a legal rightto take time off for volunteering. Youcan decide to give them time off, paidor unpaid, or you can oblige them touse their holiday entitlement. Theycan’t insist on being paid, unless ofcourse they take annual leave. If theydon’t want to use holiday, you canagree to it being “special leave” andthen it will be up to you to decidewhether that will be paid or unpaid.
It might be a good idea to considerintroducing a Policy in advance of theOlympics and communicate it to staff. The Policy could cover your position in
difficult. Before the events you could have a meeting with staff andencourage them to be upfront andrequest a day’s holiday if they want towatch either event. You could say thatyou will consider flexible workingrequests but that you need to havethese requests in advance. You canalso make it clear that you will betaking a robust approach to those who have the odd day off here andthere during the events and thatdisciplinary action will be takenagainst those who are found to havetaken time off when they are notgenuinely ill. You should remind staffthat if they are ill they must telephoneyou (and not email or text) to adviseas to the reason for their absence andwhen they expect to return.

TIME FORCHANGEW e all love our homes at any time of the year and it’s hard to deny
that the heart of any home is the kitchen. There’s nothing better than coming home to a relaxed kitchen environment and indulging
in some delicious home cooked food. For many of us, the kitchen is where the party’s at! Entertaining friends and family, we all need a good space that we can share with others and be proud of.
Getting a brand new kitchen fitted can be wonderful and yet expensive. So how about looking into making those small changes that can make all thedifference. Lack of storage can always be a problem but it is a problem easilysolved with beautiful, stylish cupboards. Increasing worktop space canalways be useful and can be achieved by adding kitchen surfaces in theshape of an island or by adding shelves to display your appliances. Cookingappliances and gadgets often find themselves with no real home, causingunneeded clutter; something which can be changed.
Complete kitchen renovations are not within everyones reach, however byaltering smaller aspects, the results can be incredibly benefical.
Building a relationship with companies or individuals who specialise incarpentry, plumbing and kitchen fitting can allow you to feel at ease callingthem about any ideas that you have surrounding changes to your home andhow they could help.
