JCNA NewsJaguar Clubs of North America AGM March 17 – 19, 2017 The Hotel at River Rock, Richmond, B.C.

T his event is fast becoming reality with March 2017 closing in. All plans are in place and notices have been sent to JCNA

affiliate clubs by email and through Jaguar Journal announcements, with more to come.

Friday evening’s St. Patrick’s Day dinner party is becoming a favourite with those attending. The Saturday evening awards banquet and dinner will be a highlight, not only because of the speakers Wolfgang Hoffman, President, Jaguar Land-Rover Canada, and Nigel Matthews, Global Director of Client Services for Hagerty Insurance, but that many of our members will be walking up on stage to collect their year-end competition awards.

Also of great interest are the Friday and Saturday afternoon seminars, one covering JCNA Awards Program and the other by Nigel Matthews focusing on his global travels as a judge of exotic cars.

While meetings are underway Friday and Saturday, spouse activities take place which include bus tours and visits to both Bloedel Conservatory and the Museum of Anthropology at UBC, with lunches included.

The River Rock Hotel has extended favourable guest room rates of $149 and 1-bedroom suites at $179, and they have been very welcoming toward our group. Food-service is excellent and the chef’s creations are what we would expect from one who came from a top downtown Vancouver hotel.

Many delegates are planning vacations around this weekend, with some already booking their Whistler ski packages and accommodations following these meetings. It seems that the lure of Vancouver is strong and will bring an excellent turn-out of delegates to this AGM weekend.

Registration will be through our website as well as a printed registration form included in the Jaguar Journal being delivered about January 1, 2017. Our website will be linked to our Jaguar Journal page for greater ease of accessibility.

More details will become available as time goes on. Meanwhile, consider volunteering a little of your time at the Friday and Saturday events to welcome delegates and be a smiling face from the host club. And be sure to stay for the evening parties.

GT-42: June 19 to 23GT-42, the annual get together of the North American MGA Register, will be hosted by the MG Owners Club of Northern California and the Paradise British Car Club. The event takes place in Solvang, a town in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County along the Central California coast. Founded in 1911 by Danes who left the US Midwest and its harsh winters, Solvang is famous for the traditional Danish-style architecture of many of its downtown buildings and for its Danish bakeries, restaurants and stores. A car show, tech sessions, tours in the country (the Santa Ynez Valley has 70 wineries), and a banquet are being planned. The show will be on the grounds of the Mission Santa Inés, a US National Historic Landmark, and the Host Hotel is the Hotel Corque, a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence winner. The GT-42 website will be operational by the end of the year and it will be accessible from www.namgar.com [Note that all MGs can participate in GT-42, not just MGAs.]

MG2017: June 25 to 28The North American MGB Register’s annual convention takes place in San Diego the week following GT-42, 250 miles south of Solvang. The program will include a show and concours, technical sessions, tours and a banquet. The host hotel is the Paradise Point Hotel & Spa, a 44-acre island resort. Note that reservations at the hotel are made as part of the event registration process, which will be opened later this year. All MGs are invited to participate in MG2017, not just MGBs, and ‘Other British’ cars are also welcome. For details on MG2017, see the website: https://mg2017.namgbr.org/ If you want to see and/or participate in the dedicated forum on MG2017 through the MG Experience website, go to: http://www.mgexp.com/mg2017 For those who aren’t already a member of MG Experience, you can sign up for free.

California BoundPeter and Anne Tilbury will be driving approximately 1300 miles on US Hwy 101, leaving Vancouver on June 14th and planning to arrive in Solvang, California in the afternoon of June 18th. They will be driving approximately 300 miles each day and can send a draft of the schedule to anyone interested in this route. Contact them at [email protected]

Is Your Car Ready? For CCMGC members who are reluctant to commit to going to California due to a lack of confidence in their car, or who do not usually drive this distance, Peter Tilbury and a team including Steve Kaufman, Tony Cox and Richard Loeppky are offering to check over your car on the hoist in the Tilbury garage in South Surrey. They will have a comprehensive 40-point check list. If they find that replacement parts are needed, they can assist you to acquire them and then make arrangements to fit them at a later date. They would like to do these inspections before the end of March, that is, in the next four months, so if you are interested in having the inspection done, contact Peter as soon as possible for an appointment ([email protected]). There is no charge for the inspection, and you will be encouraged to participate. They will also be providing a packing list of tools and spares that you should carry.

MGA RUNS AT BONNEVILLE– AUGUST 13 TO 18 –

Peter Tilbury

W hen we learned that an MGA from England would be running at the Bonneville Speed

Week in 2014, we decided we had to go and see it. Unfortunately, the salt was deemed to be unsuitable for racing due to unusual rain amounts in the months before the event, so we canceled our trip.

We thought we would go in 2015, but similar conditions caused the second cancellation of the event.

Then in July 2016 we read on the Southern California Timing Association website that they had been able to groom the salt to produce three courses – a three mile Rookie course, a five mile Short course, and an eight mile Long course.

So on August 9th and 10th we drove to Salt Lake City, Utah. Our night stop was in Baker City, Oregon, where we met a team from Gibsons, BC, with the diesel Goldenhawk Streamliner.

When we arrived at the Bonneville salt flats on the Utah/Nevada border on August 13th, we found many other racers from BC – a 1942 rear engined Jeep from Burnaby, a 1987 and a 1989 Yamaha from Monte Lake, a 1933 AJS from Summerland, a 1971 Harley-Davidson from Monte Lake, and a 1976 Triumph from Vernon. There were also cars and bikes from Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec, and from many overseas countries – France, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Russia, Japan, Holland, Isle of Man, New Zealand and Australia.

We obtained Press Accreditation and went straight to the pits. What we found astounded us – the pit area was about four miles long, and the vehicles were three rows deep! We found the 1961 MGA in its pit, marked by a Union Jack flag.

We met the car’s crew – Colin Walker, car owner, David Chapman, driver, Stephen Walker (Colin’s cousin), car builder and mechanic, all from Derbyshire, and Richard Struhaan, local fixer from California. The driver was a rookie as this was the team’s first visit to Bonneville, so he had to take rookie training. The car also had to pass tech inspection.

Over the next six days, the car ran first on the rookie course and then on the long course, achieving timed runs from 121 mph to 195 mph.

Obviously this is not a stock MGA. The car was built on the MGA chassis with all the required safety features – a roll cage, two fire extinguisher systems, and a parachute for stability under braking.

The original engine was going to be from an 1800 MGB, but computer calculations of the coefficient of drag showed that this would not be powerful enough to achieve the team’s target of 200 mph. So they

installed a Ford Coyote V8 5 litre engine and put a supercharger on it. This produced 640 bhp at 6,800 rpm with 11 psi of boost. Then Hennessy Racing in California changed the pulley on the supercharger for a smaller one, and remapped the ECU. The result was a power increase to 675 bhp.

The MGA body was rebuilt in aluminium with the bonnet getting a bulge to

clear the supercharger. An aluminium tonneau cover was fitted and as per the regulations a spoiler was added. This causes air turbulence and increases stability. The car weighs 1,700 kgs with a 700/1000 kg front to rear split. Over 400 kgs of ballast has been added to the battery carriers area near the rear axle to give improved traction. While the body has some modifications, it still has the flowing lines and is recognizable as an MGA.

The car owner told us the cost to build the car was about £250,000 (Cdn$425,000). This does not include transport costs, air fares or hotels. The car was shipped to the US from the UK in 2014, back to England, and then to the US again in 2015. It was stored in a Richard’s garage near LA for over a year.

Unfortunately, the car did not reach its target of 200 mph during the 2016 Speed Week. The car was entered in D/BFMS class – engine up to 5,014cc, fitted with a blower, using any fuel type, and a modified sports body. The current speed record for this class is 222.9 mph. The car is expected to be back in 2017 if sponsorship can be found. n

MGA hits 195 mph.

Lesa Zaverganietz

C olin and I had often discussed entering a Slalom with either the MGB or the Jaguar. It had been some time

since Colin ran his Alpine in a Slalom in Vancouver with the New Westminster Sports Car Club and he said what he remembered was that it was more about precision rather than speed, but you couldn’t help wanting to blend the speed into the precision.

I said it sounded like great fun and would be the most fun in a standard transmission so we decided to enter the MGB in the Heritage Classic in the Boundary Bay Slalom on August 21st.

We all met on the Boundary Bay tarmac early Sunday morning. We were excited and more than happy to brave the wind and rising sun to listen to the tutorial which explained the bar each car would have to meet during inspection in order to be able to run in the Slalom. I was surprised at the comprehensive review of each car and overview of the rules of the Slalom itself that was undertaken before the race. While I wasn’t apprehensive about the race, I found that I felt reassured because there was so much to know about the Slalom before you even thought about getting into the car and speeding off, with precision.

Once we passed inspection and had all the information needed to play the game safely, I was off in my first run and I quickly found that I simply couldn’t go as fast as I thought I would be able to. With great run-by run pointers from the attendants I learned that top speed would be achieved in second gear and third gear had to remain a dream. I realized very quickly that it was about going into the turns not too fast to cause a pylon to be displaced, but fast enough to enter

the straight away with speed and then more speed but only for a moment - a real balancing act - not an easy feat!

I love driving the MGB. It’s great fun on corners and has enough get up and go on the straight away, but I think success at the Slalom is about how well you know your car. I can tell you that I will be driving the MGB as much as possible seeking out tight corners and little straight

aways until the next Slalom where the women will show even better I am sure.

We had a fantastic time with all the great people there and look forward to the next challenge!

[Editor’s note: Slalom Director John Morse reports that Lesa’s first run as a novice was 62 seconds, which she dropped to less than 54 seconds by her last run. And no penalty points for knocking down cones.] n

Joe Carroll

Most of our cars will be put away in their garages by now. What next? They have had a season of wonderful driving experiences on many variable

roads. Samples of those roads will be adhering to the underneath of your car. Even though we rarely encounter “horse buns” any more, there is a selection of abrasives, corrosives and other nasty stuff accumulated under there, waiting to do damage in the coming months. A thorough hosing underneath followed by adequate drying time comes first. Then an application of a light oil spray should do the trick. While doing the above it is always a good time to make sure that the body panel drains are clear.

When cars are put away after a drive some curious things happen. The warm oils in the gearbox, engine and rear end are all very hot, as are the metal parts. All these areas are ventilated and while the cooling takes place, outside air enters and settles on the shiny gears and shafts causing rust. A simple solution is to put your car on stands and when the oils have cooled, turn the drive shaft a few times so that the bright bits get a nice coating of cool oil.

If your engine or gearbox oils are due for a change, when the engine is warmed up, drain the oil and the filter and remove the sparking plugs. Leave them out until the engine filter etc. are dealt with. Put a small amount of oil into each cylinder and then turn the engine slowly to spread a nice film on the cylinders. Replace the sparking plugs.

It is well known that gasoline has a finite life. After a period of time its composition changes and can cause your car’s engine to perform poorly or not at all. Older MGs have a drain plug on the gas tank, but they were not fitted in later models.

So to avoid the hazardous job of removing stale gasoline, or a tow to the nearest garage, there is a preventative measure. Go to your local auto parts store or lawn mower repair shop and buy an inexpensive container of gasoline “stabilizer”. Follow the instructions and you will avoid a job that is messy and hazardous!

While you are in the mood may I suggest a few more areas to check before the long sleep? Refill the S.U. Carburetter dashpot(s), shock absorbers and yes, the batteries! Is there white gooey corrosion on them? If so, prepare a solution of baking soda in water and clean the tops, sides, hold down clamps and cable ends with an old tooth brush dipped in the baking soda mix. CAUTION! Do not allow the soda to get inside the battery! Rinse off with clean water. Check the level of the acid (electrolyte) inside the battery cells. If it is below the top of the plates add clean distilled water. Buy one of those small “battery maintainer’ chargers (not an old fashioned “trickle charger”) that you can leave on all winter. Finally, check the level of your radiator coolant and buy or borrow a radiator tester and check that the coolant is strong enough for the ambient weather in your area.

It is okay to leave your car on secure stands. Sitting on the garage floor for several months can cause flat areas on your tyres.

Don’t forget to close the heater outside vents and the opening windows. Some of you will remember how vexed I was when a rat or a mouse broke into my shrine of British Engineering. It blithely chewed the knob on the gear lever and also my now unavailable rubber mats.

If you finish this off with a nice shampoo and a high quality waxing, your car will be ready for you in the spring.

Winter is Here!

Bob Sherman

Note that this article is not titled “Eliminating MG Oil Leaks.” Such a goal, however worthy, is most likely unachievable by mortal men or women. Having

said that, I have some ideas to share with you from my experience with MGBs. These may well apply to other motors.

The most obvious place to start is the valve cover gasket. This is so simple that the reader probably wonders why it is even mentioned. My experience is that most standard valve covers have, at some point, been over-tightened. This causes the cover to be somewhat warped and prevents a good seal from being made, especially at the rear, even with a new gasket. I am not one to encourage spending on “shiny bits,” but installing one of the aftermarket alloy valve covers will provide a nice, even surface for the gasket and allow the installer to tighten the cover (gently please) without warping. It’s important to note that the alloy covers don’t have a groove to hold the valve cover gasket in place for installation. I use a product called “Gascacinch” to do this when installing the gasket. Caution: Do not inhale the fumes from this product. Stop and have a nice whiskey whilst the adhesive is curing.

A more difficult “leak reduction task” requires access to the rear main bearing seal. Most readers know that the engine/transmission is best removed as a unit to replace this seal. (On the later MGBs equipped

with the Sierra T-9 gearbox conversion, one can remove the transmission whilst leaving the motor en situ. Trust me. I have done this more than once.) Close inspection of the crankshaft surface often reveals that a groove has

been worn into the crankshaft. This prevents a good seal. Even if the groove is very small, many experts recommend installation of a “Speedy Sleeve.” This is a very thin piece of metal that installs over the area, providing an excellent surface for the new seal to adhere to.

Something else I learned involves the bolts that secure the oil pan to the engine block. The length of the bolts is critical. If one looks down at

the flanges of the block on each side, one can see that the threaded holes into which the bolts install are open, in other words, a bolt could thread right through. However, be aware that some holes at the very back and front of the block are not “through holes”. They very definitely have a bottom. If one installs a bolt a bit too long, it will not draw up against the oil pan surface, and thus a leak can easily result. So, pay attention to this as you re-install an oil pan.

This writer has but scratched the surface on oil leaks from British cars. I hope it gives you a starting place to begin your under bonnet adventures. n

Our current club logo dates from approximately 1980 and incorporates an interwoven Jaguar winged logo

with an MG logo, either within or without an oval. These logos are used for many purposes, among them: club letterhead, the membership roster, Classical Gas and Little Classical Gas, the website, window decals, names badges.

Why is a change required? As a result of a new logo license agreement between the Jaguar Land Rover Company and Jaguar Clubs of North America in 2015, all JCNA affiliate clubs were required to submit their logos for approval. Two were rejected; one of them was ours. Jaguar Land Rover (or any other company) cannot approve a logo which contains another company’s trademark, that is, one they do not own. We are therefore required to create separated logos (CXKJR and CCMGC), and submit the CXKJR portion of the new logo to JCNA for approval by Jaguar Land Rover. This submission to JCNA and Jaguar Land Rover is primarily for the purpose of verifying that the Jaguar leaper logo has been used in compliance with the logo licence agreement. It is generally not for the purpose of approving artistic decisions made by the clubs in designing their logos.

Process: The club Executive Committee formed a Sub-Committee to design a new logo and present it for approval to the Executive and then to the members. Club members were invited to serve on the sub-committee, and to submit comments and ideas. An overview of the input received from the members:

• preserve design elements of the old logo

• incorporate common design elements for both

• use Jaguar leaper, not Jaguar growler

• don’t mess around with the MG octagon

• use MG radio logo

• incorporate maple leaf(s) and Canadian & BC flags

• incorporate mountains & water to reflect our locale

• incorporate sun (as in the BC flag) to reflect our locale

[Note that use of Canadian & BC flags requires government approval.]

Several sketches of designs were also submitted. The input and sketches were reviewed and duly considered by the Logo Sub-Committee and two new logos were proposed:

These logos reflect the following:•ellipse, border, dark green fill colour and font for club

names retained from old logo•current Jaguar leaper logo used to comply with JLR/JCNA

licence agreement•current MG company logo used to match new Jaguar logo

and ensure future MG company approval•mountains and sun used to provide some reflection of

our locale•suitable for use in print (e.g. letterhead, newsletter,

website)•suitable for use in other applications (e.g. name tags,

window decals, badges)•the Jaguar logo approved for our use by Jaguar Land

Rover and JCNAAt our club’s Annual General Meeting on November 8, the two new club logos were presented and approved. We will begin implementation in January 2017 including replacement of the old logo with the new logos on the club website, in Classical Gas, Little Classical Gas & the club Roster and on club letterhead, name badges, window decals and in time, on regalia/apparel offerings. The new logos will be used in materials related to hosting the 2017 JCNA AGM.

Thank you to all club members who submitted comments, ideas & sketches. A big thank you to Steve Collins who served on the Logo Sub-Committee and a very big thank you to Sarah Wilson who served on the Logo Sub-Committee and undertook all computer design work on behalf of our club.

Sea to Sky All British Rally

Presidents’ Run

E ach year the MG and Jaguar Presidents plan a weekend

cruise to a destination in BC or Washington. This year’s run was to Whistler on the October 22/23 weekend led by CXKJR President Greg Wagorn. The group left Silk Cat Automotive and had a stop to go up the Sea to Sky Gondola, with the base located on the Sea to Sky Highway between Shannon Falls and Stawamus Chief Mountain. The summit provided sweeping views of Howe Sound. The host hotel this year was the Aava Hotel Whistler and dinner was at the 21 Steps Kitchen and Bar. (Photos by Chris Venning and Greg Wagorn)

S ponsored by Silk Cat Automotive Specialists, the 4th Annual Sea to Sky

Rally took place September 24. Sixty-five British cars participated in the 120 km scenic drive from North Vancouver to be displayed on Whistler’s Olympic Plaza, with a large contingent from CXKJR/CCMGC. Winners of this year’s Rally Questionnaire were CXKJR members Sid & Emily Hanson. (Photos by Timothy Horton and Greg Wagorn)

Classical Gas | 21November | December 2016

A club like CXKJR/CCMGC remains alive and healthy because members participate in club-sponsored activities

and a core of committed individuals volunteer their time to take on special tasks and responsibilities. Each year, other members step forward for (or in some cases are arm twisted into) Executive and Administrative positions, plus many other members plan and put on events that make our club fun and worthwhile.

Although we hoped to have a full 2017 Executive in place by the November 8th AGM, only one of four available positions was filled that night – Al Harlow was elected as the Jaguar Vice-President. Very fortunately, other members have now stepped forward for the remaining three positions: Chris Down as MG Vice-President, Ruth Schmidt as Treasurer and me as Secretary. The 2016 VPs (Tim Horton for Jaguar, Norm Stanley for MG) will be automatically moving to the Prez positions in 2017, and the current Presidents (Greg Wagorn for Jaguar, Fred Wallace for MG) will move to the Past President positions.

While it’s great news that all the Executive spots are filled for next year, there are still vacancies in three other key club positions: Little Classical Gas Editor, Classical Gas Ad Manager & the second Heritage 2017 Co-chair.

Our award-winning magazine Classical Gas has one position to fill. Our current CG production team includes Joe Carroll (Technical Editor), Phyl Waite (Distribution), Mike Harford (Website), Rod Maides (assisting with general editing), plus Infigo Imaging, the design company responsible for layout and printing. The Classical Gas Ad Manager position is currently vacant. This job could be filled by one person or by two people working in close cooperation, handling the two major aspects of the position:

• Advertiser contact

• Administrative tasks (including invoicing, financial tracking & records)

Without an Ad Manager to oversee renewals and new ads, over time our income will decrease and no longer allow Classical Gas to continue in its current form. Interested in joining the Classical Gas team to handle the Ad Manager position? Contact me at [email protected] or 604-880-7598.

After eight years, Little Classical Gas Editor Rhonda Gale is giving another member the opportunity to publish our monthly electronic newsletter. A new LCG Editor is needed to take over as of January 1, and without one, Little Classical Gas, including its calendar of events, updates on club activities and the Marketplace for cars/parts for sale will be no longer. For more information, contact Rhonda at [email protected] or 604-521-3021.

A final reminder: the 48th Annual Heritage Classic Weekend takes place August 18 -20, 2017. We need two Co-chairs to oversee this major annual event, and while one member has already stepped forward, there’s still a second Co-chair position available. Planning has started so if you’re interested, don’t delay. I was the 2016 Heritage Chair so for further information on this position, contact me at [email protected] or 604-880-7598.

Your call is important to us. Three key positions remain open and January 1 is rapidly approaching. Call now before it’s too late – operators are standing by. The first twenty callers can fight over the chance to take on the fun and challenge of LCG Editor, CG Ad Manager or Heritage 2017 Co-chair.

KRUISE FOR KIDS TOY RUN 2016

O n November 6, Kruise for Kids drivers gathered in the parking area behind the Red Robin Restaurant at Guildford to talk cars and

to meet for their annual handshake and hello. Most years Doug is there with his red 1969 MGB roadster measuring off raffle tickets, but not this year. Norm and Diane Stanley brought their lovely British Racing Green 1977 supercharged MGB roadster instead - a surprise to many there! Diane, Norm and Doug measured car lengths and arm lengths and generally enjoyed dispensing jokes and grins and of course tickets. The weather stayed dry right up until 10 am when the call went out and the engines came to life for the trip to Langley.

For members new to the club – a bit of history. Rain, snow or sun, car fanciers and their prized rides come together to make Christmas a little bit better for some of the less fortunate children of BC. For 33 years, car clubs in the Greater Vancouver area have collected toys and money to donate to the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau. Drivers meet and collect a form that entitles them (the first 150 participants) to a T-shirt and dash plaque. The next 50 drivers get the dash plaque. The actual entry fee for the event is an unwrapped, new toy but almost everyone brings more than one toy and car clubs, including ours, also bring a cash donation.

Participants are encouraged to decorate their cars and to dress up themselves. Four trophies are awarded: Best Decorated Vehicle, Best Dressed Driver & Crew, Best Club Turnout and Best Club Display. After leaving the Red Robin, cars follow the same route each year along Fraser Highway and arrive at the Coast Hotel and Convention Centre (site of CCMGC/CXKJR Heritage 2014). Here drivers collect their T-shirts and dash

plaques and purchase more raffle tickets. While Mike and Tonya Harford normally handle these ticket sales, this year Joe Carroll and Steve Collins sold raffle tickets at the Convention Centre. Tables are arranged at the front of the banquet room for participants to drop off their toys and there is a table at the side of the room for people to hand in cash donations. As with most charities, cash is greatly appreciated since often they are able to increase the buying power of $1 to $3 or more.

As the morning progresses there are raffle draws, trophy presentations, cash presentations by various individuals and cars clubs, and more raffle draws! Highlighting the event this year was the auctioning of the handmade Kruise for Kids Quilt featuring T-shirts that had been given to the Christmas Bureau from the past 10 years. Initially tickets were sold but the winner donated it back for auction and in

the end this beautiful quilt raised $500.

This year was a good year for the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau. The Kruise for Kids Toy Run collected an amazing $18,090 (tallied up by CXKJR members Doug and Carol Carr) and over 600 toys. There has been some good natured rivalry between our club and the Ford Falcon Comet Club for many years - our club usually having the highest cash donation. In 2015 they overtook us but in 2016 we were back donating $3998 – once again the highest cash donation. Thank you once again to the club executive, to everyone who contributes to the monthly charity draw and to those individuals who reached deep into their pockets and gave just a bit more. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
