Los mandatos familiares/informales
(Familiar Commands)
Commands are used to give an order or tell someone what to do.
Guarda el archivo, cierra el programa y apaga el ordenador.
Save the file, close the program and turn off the computer.
There are different kinds of commands depending on the social situation. When speaking to
someone who you would address as “tú”, use a familiar/informal command.
There are two types of familiar/informal commands:
o Affirmative Commands (Mandatos afirmativos)
Affirmative commands are used to tell someone what to do.
Affirmative commands are formed by simply using the present tense 3rd person
(él/ella/Ud) form of the verb. For example:
Llama al mecánico y haz una cita.
Call the mechanic and make an appointment.
Mándame un mensaje de texto.
Send me a text message.
¡Atención! When using an affirmative command with
a pronoun, the pronoun is attached to the end of
the verb, and an accent is added to maintain the
original pronunciation of the verb.

o Negative Commands (Mandatos negativos)
Negative commands are used to tell someone NOT to do something.
To form a negative command:
1. Start with the present tense „yo‟ form
2. Drop the „o‟ from the end
3. Add the OPPOSITE „tú‟ form verb ending as shown below
-AR Verbs -ER/-IR Verbs
-es -as
For example:
No mandes mensajes de texto mientras conduces.
Don‟t text while driving.
¿Tienes móvil? No lo uses en clase.
Do you have a cell phone? Don‟t use it in class.
o So why do you have to first start with the present tense „yo‟ form?
Many verbs have an irregularity that occurs in the present tense „yo‟ form:
