When all-in-ones hit our radar in Spring 09, we were very
sceptical. They looked chic on models, but would we be able
to pull them off? That was then. Now we know jumpsuits are
a great alternative to dresses. Stylist Sarah Wharton says:
“In essence, it’s a man’s utility outfit which, draped over a
woman’s body, is just about the sexiest thing you can wear.”
All-in-one £49 853.9774
And to this season’s unlikely style icon: Amelia Earhart. The subject of several Hollywood
biopics, the Thirties female pilot is having a moment. Or rather, her ubiquitous flying jacket is. Seen in several incarnations at Alexander Wang, Loewe and Just Cavalli, this one captures her adventurer’s spirit without falling into Biggles’ territory.
Suede Jacket £145 854.2120
Not quite brave enough to tackle the harem pant? Try the
peg trouser instead. These tapered ankle grazers are
roomy on the hip then nip in just above the ankle to create a whole new, so-now silhouette. Team with heels and a boxy jacket for Spring 10’s take on
What's the look? The spring 10 catwalks shared one common denominator: the classic mac. Loewe’s colour-pop button detail and coordinated accessories added a playful zing to the proceedings, while Giles Deacon embraced frosted sherbet metallics.
How to do itWe know that there is no messing with a classic, so use Burberry as your benchmark and keep it belted, double-breasted and, if you dare, thigh-grazing.
What's the look? This season, designers are staying true to denim’s casual credentials with knotted shirts and frayed hemlines. At Dsquared2, neon blazers were dressed down with retro rockabilly capris, while stella mcCartney showcased button-fronted pencil skirts and espadrilles.
How to do itTake a leaf out of sienna miller’s fashion book. her Twenty8Twelve collection was all about doubling up denim. if that’s too, too much a shrunken denim jacket will relax even the most formal of summer dresses.

Flirty Frills Fashion editors’ favourite, Isabel Marant is known for her too-cool-for-school must-haves. This season it’s her tiered mini-dress that we adore. Get the look with this antique rose frilled number all rocked up with studded ankle boots.

Serge Cajfinger is in his element when we meet one autumnal day in Paris. Sat in a whiter than white room, all dressed in black, the Paule Ka designer co-ordinates well with his mainly monochrome creations for La Redoute which surround him. Journalists from around Europe are competing to get to him. It’s La Redoute’s press launch and despite all the hoo-ha Serge is not in the least fazed, easily answering all questions thrown at him in English and French.
Since starting Paule Ka in 1987, Serge has always looked to iconic women to inspire him. When asked to design for La Redoute he started the process with a very specific muse in mind.
Words by Nicola Wood
IntroducIng PauLe Ka desIgner SeRge CajfingeR, who was InspIred to create the new PauLe Ka CoLLeCtion foR La ReDoute by a modern-day Icon – agyneSS Deyn
“It was always about Agyness. She’s a stylish combination of masculine and feminine. She’s just a little bit Marilyn Monroe. Or she was until she dyed her hair black – all of a sudden she looked very Jackie O. I wanted to embrace that she can be both the wife and mistress at the same time,” he explains.
The aesthetic of the collection is similar to Paule Ka but its prices are more accessible, especially with the accessories. Something that Serge is keen to emphasise: “I really enjoyed designing the accessories. I’ve never had the chance to make sneakers before!” Asked to describe the collection in a few short words, he says: “It’s very 1980s. Agyness is very 1980s and fashion is currently very 1980s.”
So this would explain the monochrome palette with hits of fuchsia and cobalt blue. “I didn’t like colour before but now I am loving it. That’s fashion for you. It’s all about playing a game. British women are more playful than French women who are much more traditional in the way they dress,” he says, smiling.
It’s fitting then that Agyness is the model – a British woman showcasing a French collection. “The look was very different to Agyness’s own style but she knew how to play it,” Serge adds. And how does he advise women like you and I to ‘play it’? “Trust yourself and don’t worry about what other people think.” Good advice.
“Fashion is all about playing a game.
British women are more playful than French women”

Celebrate the return of those summertime blues by laying to rest autumn’s sober spectrum of black and grey. Spring 10’s catwalks were awash with lagoon-like shades. Incarnations of the trend were bright, bold and blocked (Antonio Berardi) or structured accent pieces offsetting loose-fitting separates (Stella McCartney). If in doubt, follow trailblazer Giorgio Armani’s lead: he was happy to sit iris and azure shades alongside one another. Whatever your body shape, there’s definitely a hue for you. Just make sure it’s blue.

wear skinny jeans with flats, like a pair of mannish brogues or biker boots. I’ll pop a tux jacket over the top to give off my borrowed-from-the-boys style with a little bit of rock chick thrown in. Having said that I have been known to turn up for work in a silk printed kimono or a floaty dress once in a while, channelling pretty. Actually,
there is that other side to me - the hippy. I usually save this more laidback me for shoots abroad or holidays and just hint to it in my city life through a tassled bag or by wearing a printed scarf around my neck. But Spring 10 will allow me to embrace my inner hippy more overtly as the catwalks were peppered with references to the Seventies.”
"I love the tassles - very seventies in a good way!"
TrendThe catwalks spoke in hushed tones for Spring 10, whispering quiet shades of nude, cream and khaki as the non-colour colours of the season. Chanel shrugged off its signature monochrome palette for muted tones of biscuit and caramel and even print-happy Pucci made way for neutrals, as colour took a back seat, appearing mainly in the form of accents and colour-pops. StyliSt lizanne HarriS walked three La Redoute readers through one of this season’s hottest trends.
Cool khaki Keri Proubert, 29 Drawing inspiration from DKNY’s simple fuss-free formula, Lizanne put a utilitarian spin on petite Keri’s outfit, layering a plain khaki shirt dress over drawstring shorts with rope-tie detail “the little shorts peeping out highlighted her fantastic legs”, Lizanne said, and put a smart spin on an essentially super-casual outfit. With the option to wear the dress on its own or in a shorter tunic style layered over shorts or trousers, it’s the perfect city break capsule outfit, which can take you easily into the night.
