AmplificationLas Américas International Airport (AILA) in Santo Domingo is currently being rebuilt and amplified. The concessionaire Aero-puertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) invests 450 million pesos in a new façade and to increase the sales area of the duty-free and other shops inside the airport. Managing-director of Aerodom, Andrew O'Brian says, the airport will have a modern outfit with a merger of stainless steel, alu-minum and glass, tropical colors, woodwork and Venetian blinds. Lintels, banners and chrystals refer to palm trees and the sea.

IncreaseAccording to the Central Bank (BC), tourism increased again by five percent in 2011. Despite the international crisis had arrived nearly 4.7 million foreign visitors in the Do-minican Republic by the end of November. The quantum of the visitors is shifting to the South, which increased by 41.7 percent, led by Brazilians. From North America came 55,000 tourists more than in the previous year, too. Since the Christmas and New Year's holi-days are a kind of state of emergen-cy not only in the Do-

minican Republic, but throughout Latin America, every year there is a special center for emergencies (COE - Centro de Opera-ciones de Emergencias) that tries to help to prevent too many victims during this season and later publish the death toll.In the Dominican Republic 26 people died on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, 24 of them in traffic accidents, two of alcohol poisoning. 54 percent of the traffic fatalities are motorcyclists. Alone in two hospitals in Santo Domingo, 109 patients were treated for food and alcohol poisoning.On New Year the number rose by 21 deaths, all in traffic accidents. Together, there were 47. The COE sees this as a success, because the year before there were 74 deaths in the same period.

However, the number of people injured in traffic accidents is higher than last year.The Traffic Police (Amet) collected 1,333 bikes during the holidays and pointed out that 90 percent of the dead motorcyclist didn't wear a helmet.

Archbishop Cardinal Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez, called politicians to avoid a dirty election campaign during the New Year's Mass in the Santo Domingo Cathe-dral. Everyone should just say what he will do if he wins. López Rodríguez also expressed his incom-prehension for the shockingly high number of murders of women in the past year. If a man and a woman cannot live together any longer, they just should separate, and “leave that thing”. These murders cause a deep pain in the hearts and souls of all Dominicans.

Santo Domingo. Yeni Berenice Reynoso was the highly respected prosecuter of Santiago since 2009.After the cholera outbreak in Haiti she pushed through against the fierce opposition of powerful dealer organisations that at the flea markets no longer used clothing from Haiti may be sold, in order to prevent the spread of cholera.Reynoso also caused a stir when she closed two bars in Santiago last May, where 40 minors were found drinking alcohol and some of them working as prostitutes. She

told the parents, that she could not under-stand what kind of parents they are, allowing their own twelve and 13-year-old children to stay in such places.When she was sworn in in Santo Domingo, Reynoso said: “Believe me I am more than aware of the great challenge that the Public Ministry has placed in my hands. I am not making promises. I prefer that my actions speak to society and the Public Ministry. I prefer that my actions speak more than words. Then the team of the Prosecutor Office of the National District can be sure that they will have someone who will not have working hours. I say that crime does not have working hours, that criminals do not have working hours and the prosecutor should not have working hours either.”The first thing after taking office that Yeni Berenice Reynoso did was to put an end to the spectacle of the ex-Senator Tonty Rutinel, who was detained for 17 days because of violence against a former partner. He refused to leave the Palace of Justice, where he was

taken into custody and to sign the guarantee of a 10 million pesos deposit for his bail out that friends got for him. He said he wants to be freed without any conditions for he is innocent. He said he asked the woman already to forgive him and she needed only three stitches for her wound anyhow. The new Attorney General sent him to the “normal” prison of Najayo.

Murder and drug trafficking are closely linked with each other. Since 2003, the murder rate is in the steady rise, from 1,649 cases to 2,472 in 2010, and even more in 2011, of which no final official figures are available yet. Most of these cases are associated with drugs.Under the lead of DNCD chief Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo, last year more drugs were discovered than ever before. Almost every day can be read re-ports of cocaine finds in incredible quan-tities. A few hundred kilos of the white powder are nothing uncommon any more. The largest catch of the year was 1,077 pounds at one fell swoop. The question is

whether the National Drug Control Authority DNCD now works much more effectively than before, or there are just a lot more drugs coming into the country and therefore more are found.Interior Minister José Ramón “Monchi” Fadul (photo) is very concerned about the large number of illegal arms in the country. Contrary to popular belief, they do not come from Haiti, but by air and sea. “Haiti can not be held respon-sible for everything,” said Fadul.Asked for more detailed information about the weapons and the way how they come into the country, the Interior and Police minister didn't answer. When journalists asked whether the criminals are better armed than police and military, Fadul responded: “No, the security organs have even tanks.”Some officials of both, DNCD as well as the National Police, seem to have serious prob-

lems with loyalty. The DNCD dismissed 208 officers, who worked for the other side. Free Space in JailAfter decades of a fruitless war with thou-sands of dead, maybe someday some-body will realize that the fight against drugs will never be won this way.News from the Netherlands show that there could be different ways. The prob-lem there is not find enough inmates for the jails. Because unlike in most countries, using soft drugs like marijuana and hashish is no reason to incarcerate any-body. Only 12,000 of the 14,000 prison places are occupied actually. The main argument of the USA, where 2.3 million people are behind bars, is that the legali-zation of soft drugs will increase crime. Liberal countries like Holland prove clear-ly that this is no logical consequence.

“Tourism has huge potential in Haiti and we are sure, that we are able to build a solid market in this sector”, said Haiti-an President Mi-chel Martelly in an interview with the Dominican news-

Martelly called on his compatriots, not to put their lives at risk with such desperate trips.After an attack on Haitian Foreign Minister Daniel Sulpice on the Autopista Duarte near Santiago, the Haitian government urged the Dominican Republic to provide more secu-rity to the Dominican roads. The vehicle of Sulpice was stopped by four men in uniforms of the Dominican police. They threatend the occupants of the car with guns and robbed them. The Foreign Ministry of Haiti called for a quick clearing up of the crime and warned of damaging the good relations. Meanwhile, Major General José Armando Polanco Gómez announced the arrest of three men who allegedly took part in the robbery of the Haitian Minister.Shortly before, a Haitian businessman was murdered in San Cristóbal, the perpetrators were also dressed as policemen.

What started off as a two month round the world trip to escape the British winter has turned into a whole new life for English couple Chris and Jane Waites.They were both in their mid-40s before they even considered taking up a PADI profes-sional scuba diving qualification, after Jane had successfully battled against breast cancer in 2008 and decided she needed a change. “I was having morbid thoughts and I decided I did not want another horrible, cold winter in Britain,” says Jane. “If I was going to die, I wanted to have done some-thing different, preferably in somewhere warm!” Chris and Jane came to the Dominican Republic in January 2011 and took over a business after just a couple of dives in Sosua Bay. They were captivated by the quality of the diving on the north coast.Selling their house in Leeds to set up their own business in the Caribbean has posed fresh challenges for the family. “We only meant to take two months off and go to Australia,” says Chris. “But then we sold our house after Rosie moved out and we just decided to keep travelling and to do the Divemaster course. Even at that stage, we never really thought of doing it full-time.”Chris loves bringing experienced divers to the 35 metre Zingara wreck just outside the bay or to the spectacular fresh water El Dudu Dudu caverns an hour to the east of Cabarete. His second kick to the stomach sent the lawyer's last meal gushing from his mouth. The lawyer was on all fours when the farmer's third kick to the rear end sent him face-first into a fresh cow pile. The dead bet lawyer managed somehow to get to his feet. Wiping his face with the arm of his jacket, he said, “OK, now it's my turn.” The old farmer smiled and said, “Naw, I give up. You can have the duck.”

Medicines can relieve many of the symptoms, but it can take several tries before finding the right drug. Treatments can include antipsycotic drugs, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), mental health medications or psychotherapy. Many of the affected can not see their own illness and need the help of family members or friends to convince them that they need treatment. Because in the worst of the cases, patients tend to suicide.
