Ships More than than 6,000 ships have anchored in the twelve Dominican ports this year and brought or took away containers. In 1995 there were just barely a thousand container ships a year. More than 20 organizations joined the call of the Foro Social Alternativo (Alternative Social Forum - FSA) to paralyze the country on Monday, November 14, by a crippling general strike. The strike will be the reaction to the fact that the government showed no reaction to the first general strike of July 11. They protest against the disrespect of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, which passed the national budget without significant allocations to municipalities, the Ministry of Education and the universities,

said spokeswoman Zoila Villa, when se explained the decision. She said it was very shameful to see how the president and the Parliament violate the new constitution which they have changed less than one year ago. Furthermore, the strike will be against the high prices of food, medicines and fuel and the uncertainty and the decline of quality of life of the Dominicans.

Confusion about the nomination of Primera Dama Margarita Cedeño de Fernández, wife of president Fernández as Vice President. On 25 October an “official source” announced that she was appointed as the candidate for the vice presidency.Félix Bautista, senator from San Juan de la Maguana, said: “The Dominican society will soon become aware of the high popularity of the PLD and candidate Danilo Medina, and the First Lady, who is the candidate for the vice presidency.”On the same day, however, Francisco Javier Garcia, head of the election campaign of Danilo Medina, said that Danilo had not yet

decided. “Up to this moment, Danilo has told to absolutely no-body who will be his candidate or his nominee as vice president.” García assured that Danilo is getting stronger day by day and that he will win the elections coming May in the first round.A new survey of the Dominican research institute Asisa shows that if Danilo Medina (PLD) will run with Margarita Cedeño he would get 55 percent of the votes, without her only 48.4. Candidate Hipólito Mejía (PRD) and Luis Abinader would get 39.6 percent. 83.2 percent of the respondents would like the First Lady as candidate for vice presidency.

Luis Alberto Moreno (photo above), President of the Inter-American Develop-ment Bank (IDB) confirms the Dominican president Leonel Fernandez in his vision for a change of the world economic model.Moreno said that the emerging countries had an important role in the discussion of consumption growth: “Growth in the global economy comes to 68 percent from the emerging countries. And because this is so, we are at the beginning of a new model, how it has to be to govern with so many international issues.”This model questions the consumption, as in the case of the North American economy, where 78 percent of growth is due to consumption. “I think that meanwhile there are serious doubts about this model,” said Moreno after the Forum of Biarritz.

The Forum of Biarritz is held annually in France and one Latin American country, this year in Santo Domingo (pic right). It was attended by 30 countries. At the opening of the Forum, President Fernández urged on the G-20 countries to make arrangements to halt the speculation of food. Politicians and economists met on the forum to debate on the future economic development of Latin America. Colombia's former president Ernesto Samper com-plained that the big problem in Latin Ame-rica is not poverty, but inequality. In order to combat poverty, the riches of the sub-continent should be distributed more fairly.IDB President Moreno said the Dominican Republic is one of the models that show how the international crisis can be mastered. He emphasized the strength of the Dominican economy, despite the crisis in Europe and the U.S., which threatens the local stability.Richard Holder, president of Eaton Cor-poration, and representatives of the free trade zones praised the country's favorable investment climate. Holder said, the country's continuing growth, control of inflation and stable exchange rates would put the country in a privileged position com-pared to other countries in the region.Héctor Valdez Albizu, president of the Central Bank (BC), announced at the celebration of the 64-year anniversary of his institute, that the Dominican economy grew by 4.2 percent from January to September. After a decline of 5.7 percent last year, the Free Trade Zones (Zona franca) have risen by 13.8 percent. It is difficult, however, to isolate a small and open economy from the world's problems.

Solar Farm in Monte PlataThe German company JRC Electronics signed a contract with the Dominican Ener-gy Corporations CDEEE in order to build a solar farm in Monte Plata, worth a 120 million dollars. In one year the plant will produce 30 MWe. JRC will sell one MWe for only 19 US-cents to the CDEEE for the coming 20 years. Normally one MWe pro-duced by a petrol plant costs 28 US-cents or more. With this project Germany wants to help to produce clean sustainable energy.

Alejandro Moscoso Segarra, Attorney General of the Dominican Republic (photo above), submitted a list of 176 officers of all ranks up to the General to the Minister of the Armed Forces and the Chief of National Police. These officers committed serious crimes such as murder, torture or rape between 2008 and 2011. The Dominican Justice supported the efforts to get rid of anti-social elements in these two institutions who hide under their shield and damage their reputation.Moscoso Segarra assured that the pro-secuting authorities under his leadership will

stand behind the government's efforts to fight crime, drug trafficking and insecurity throughout the country. Even Cardinal Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez insisted on continuing the purges. He claims that the public is worried that more and more police and military were involved in criminal activities.Major General José Armando Polanco Gómez, head of the National Police, warned that officials who refused the retraining program would get fired if they thought that they were protected through relationships. “We have a list of those who shirk from training because they are friends of high officials, if they refuse they will be fired from the police,” said Polanco Gómez. Lack of training leads to problems in society: Some of the officers try to work off their individual aggression against the population.

The human rights organization amnesty international called on the Dominican Government to reform the security forces urgently to reduce the alarming cases of murder and torture.According to Javier Zúñiga, head of the delegation of amnesty international in the Dominican Republic, the official view is that only a few corrupt and unprofessional offi-cers would commit violations of human rights. He said between January and July, there have already 154 people been killed by the police, after 125 during the same period last year. “We recognize that police officers are often in great danger in their work. However, we believe that their behavior leads to more violence and is creating a climate in which human rights are totally ignored,” said Zúñiga. After all, amnesty international admits to the police that they too have lost officers in gun battles with suspects - 32 until July.

Non-governmental Organizations like CEJIL or Mudha (Movement of Dominican-Haitian Women) tried to sue the Dominican Government at the Inter-American Commis-sion on Human Rights (IACHR) for “civil genocide” of Dominican Haitians who lost their Dominican citizenship retroactively because their parents lived here illegally. The Director of Immigration, José Ricardo Taveras had to come to Washington to counter-evidence the charges, the State is practicing a policy of repealing the natio-nality of Dominicans of Haitian origin.Taveras argued that the Central Election Board is rearranging its registers to have a modern and effective registration without falsifications. It has nothing to do with pro-secuting Haitians. CEJIL accused the Domi-nican government to deny birth certificates and thus Dominican citizenship to Hund-reds of people , utilizing resolution 012-07.According to this resolution illegal immi-grants cannot declare their children Domini-cans. Taveras asked the IACHR to reject the complaint as unfounded.

45 year old Garry Conille now is the youngest prime minister in the history of Haiti. 81 of 89 deputies accepted his nomi-nation. In his inaugural speech, Conille said, the parliamentarians have to start to work together now because “the people can not wait any longer.”President Michel Martelly met with the former Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide (pic above), and ex-dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier, trying to reconcile the torn Haitian society. Aristide, ousted in 2004, still has a strong following among the poor, but since his return he is out of politics. “Baby Doc” Duvalier has strong ties to the small but powerful elite of Haiti. “We all must stand behind the new project to rebuild our country. It is time to unite”, said Martelly.

In the fiscal year 2011, which ended in September, 396,906 foreigners were de-ported from the United States. 377,510, that is 95 percent, came from Latin America, 286,893 of them were Mexicans. This is a new record. The number of deported Do-minicans is about 3,000 per year.President Barrack Obama, who promised a new immigration law, expelled some 27,000 people more than George W. Bush in his last year of government.John Morton, director of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), had more accurate figures: 55 percent of the depor-tees were convicted of crimes or offenses, including 1,100 for murder. About 5,800 have been convicted for sexual assault, 81.000 have been accused for offenses related to drugs or drunk driving. Two-thirds

of the deportees had been arrested while crossing the border illegally.Obama has been accused by many immi-grant organizations, that his promises were not followed by deeds. On the contrary, the climate against immigrants is poisoned. Hispanic immigrants living legally in Alaba-ma complained that their children were ex-posed to harassment in schools after the new immigration law came into effect.Of the approximately 50.5 million Hispanics in the U.S. about 1.4 million are Domini-cans. Some of them had to learn after their arrival in “Nueba Yol” that not all that glitters is gold. Their dream became a night-mare. About 23,500 Dominicans are in jail. Since the legal earning opportunities often lie significantly below expectations, the temptation to earn something aditionally is great. That is usually “mandaditos”, smaller drug transports. Other good paid jobs are serious crimes such as robbery or murder. The insight that Americans react somewhat more sensitive, if you beat your beloved wife, came too late for many Latin machos.

With the expected over-whelming majority, Argen-tine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner was re-elected in the first round on Sunday, 23 October 2011. She got 53.9 percent of the votes. Her challenger, Socialist Hermes Binner, was far off with just 16.8 percent. Third was Ricardo Alfonsín, the son of former president Raúl Alfonsín, with nine percent. The turnout was 60 percent at nearly 29 million eligible voters. In total, there were seven candidates running for president. The elections were completely peaceful - no incidents were re-ported.Cristina Fernández de Kirchner voted dressed in mourning, in memory of her late husband, former president Néstor Kirchner, who ruled Argentina from 2003 to 2007.

The now 58-year-old left-liberal lawyer Cristina Fer-nández has the opportunity now to govern the country on the Río de la Plata according to her ideas until 2015.Since the end of military dictatorship in 1983, there was no other president with such an ample power in Argentina.Besides her personal triumph, she got 37 of the 72 seats in the Senate and won back the majority of the deputies, which she lost

in 2009: 135 from 257 seats.Jorge Giacobbe, director of the eponymous management consultancy and a former adviser to Transparency International, says: “With such support, the government now has the chance to fulfill its dreams. Now there's no reason not to do what they always wanted to do, no one can hold them back.”

In the general re-joicing over the death of dictator Gaddafi in Libya, which soon could be followed by a great disillusion-ment as the Isla-mists are already planning to intro-

duce the Sharia as law, there came the usual Latin American warning voices from Cuba, Venezuela and Ecuador. Cuba's former president Fidel Castro recalled that Libya is a member of the Non-Aligned Countries, which was intervened by NATO forces. He did not agree with Gaddafi's ideas nor with his religion, but the death was a murder and the public displays of Gaddafi's body was a breach of international law. Ecuador's presi-dent Rafael Correa complains about the double standards of the countries that sup-port the Libyan rebels, but close both eyes with other totalitarian regimes. Venezuela's Hugo Chávez called Gaddafi a “martyr”.

SolutionA farmer stopped by the local mechanic shop to have his truck fixed. They couldn't do it while he waited, so he said he didn't live far and would just walk home. On the way home he stopped at the hardware store and bought a bucket and a gallon of paint. He then stopped by the feed store, bought a couple of chickens and a goose. However, he now had a problem - how to carry his entire purchases home. While he was scratching his head he was approached by a little old lady who told him she was lost. She asked, ”Can you tell me how to get to 1603 Mockingbird Lane ?” The farmer said, “Well, as a matter of fact, my farm is very close to that house. I would walk you there but I can't carry this lot.” The old lady suggested, “Why don't you put the can of paint in the bucket. Carry the bucket in one hand; put a chicken under each arm and carry the goose in your other hand?” “Why thank you very much,” he said and proceeded to walk the old girl home. On the way he says “Let's take my short cut and go down this alley. We'll be there in no time.”The little old lady looked him over cautiously then said, “I am a lonely widow without a husband to defend me. How do I know that when we get in the alley you won't hold me up against the wall, pull up my skirt, and have your way with me?”The farmer said, “Holy smokes lady! I'm carrying a bucket, an, a gallon of paint, two chickens, and a goose. How in the world could I possibly hold you up against the wall and do that?”The old lady replied, “Set the goose down, cover him with the bucket, put the paint on top of the bucket, and I'll hold the chickens.”

HolidaysBob says to Lester, “You know, I reckon I'm about ready for a vacation, only this year I'm gonna do it a little different. The last few years, I took your advice as to where to go. Two years ago you said to go to Hawaii, I went to Hawaii, and Marie got pregnant. Then last year, you told me to go to the Bahamas, I went to the Bahamas, and Marie got pregnant again.” Lester says, “So what you gonna do different this year?” Bob says, “This year, I'm takin' Marie with me ...”

A policeman sends his wife and kid to a resort for a vacation. After a week he joined them in the hotel. As soon as he came to the hotel room he wanted to make love to his wife and gave her “the look”. Whispering under her breath, the wife says “No darling, we can't do it here, our kid is watching!” Husband replies, “You're right, lets go to the beach.”After a while they make their way to the beach, they start to make love on an empty beach. All of a sudden, a policeman walks up to them. “Put your cloths on immedi-ately, shame on you, you can't do that in public!” Embarrassed, the husband admits “You are right, but I had a moment of weakness. We hadn't seen each other for an entire week. Now, I'm a policeman too, and it would be very embarrassing if you fine me.” The cop thought for a second and said “Don't worry ... you are a colleague and it is your first time. But this is the third time I caught this bitch making love on this beach since last week and she will have to pay.”

Eddy Herrera from Santiago has more than 21 years in the music business. The “Galan of Merengue” has now published his twelfth album “Viviendo al tiempo” (Moving with the times). The 47-year-old successful singer is con-vinced that Merengue needs some fresh ideas in order to survive. But Eddy Herrera doesn't want to copy other former stars who try to flirt with some of the young singers of the Múcica urbana, who confidently assert that the audience at Merengue events only come because they want to see them.Eddy Herrera takes a different approach. He tries to combine Merengue with other Latin American musical styles, for example with the popular Colombian Vallenatos and Cumbias. The result can be very interesting, like his current title “Vida Loca” (Crazy Life) is proving.Eddy Herrera is convinced: “We can make no more Merengue without any fusion. It is another way to present the rhythm, so that the people enjoy our Merengue, but with a slightly different flavor.”

Hearing his songs, there are serious doubts whether this is Antony Santos or not. An almost identical voice, and the music is actually also the same. Edward José from La Isabela, named “El Baron de la Bachata”, rejects this insinuation as completely un-founded. He had “another swing” than An-tony Santos. Try to verify it with the songs “La Cabaña” or “Este no es mi hogar”.

According to veteran Johnny Ventura, Merengue continues to exist. But the artists have missed to understand it as an industry. The Merengueros have not been paying attention, when Merengue derailed and ended as a product that lacks the mere essence of Merengue. However, his request to the young stars who according to him no longer sing, but only speak, to look for a different name is slightly retarded: The new thing is called Música urbana already.

Two months before his 101st birthday, the musician Edmundo Ros has died in Alicante, Spain on 22 October 2011. He was born in Trinidad, as the son of a Venezuelan woman and a Scotsman. Until 1937 he lived in Caracas, Venezuela, where his talent was discovered in the military school when he played in a military band. With his orchestra he brought the Latin American music to London in the early forties. In 1951 Ros bought the exclusive club “Coconut Grove” in Regent Street, which he renamed in “Edmundo Ros' Dinner and Supper Club.” The guests were from the high society, such as Princess Margaret or Prince Rainier of Monaco. The club was so exclusive that no women with wide-brimmed hats or pants were admitted.Edmundo Ros recorded 800 titles during his long career. “The Wedding Samba” sold three million copies. His music was so popular in London that Princess Elizabeth, the now Queen, danced her first public dance to the music of Edmundo Ros. Edmundo Ros ended his career in 1975.

Odalis Pérez was born in La Ciénega on 4 November 1987. Under the stage name Secreto el famoso Biberón (Secreto, the famous baby-bottle), he became one of the most successful performers of the new musical style now called Música urbana, which is divided into several subgroups. Meanwhile, some interpreters of this music, which originated in the barrios of the cities, became more “civilized” and much more professional. Secreto was nominated for the Casandra as the best newcomer this year, but he didn't get the award after massive protests because of his often obscene and violent lyrics. The young man also seem to have been in conflict with the law, which however, rather seems to be seen as a plus in these circles. According to Secreto's father, who asked the police for protection therefore, the complaint that they wanted to kill him, has a real background.

What is he singing?“Papa Dios me dijo” by

Secreto el famoso Biberón

The currently most popular singer of Música urbana probably is Sec-reto el famoso Biberon. In “Papa Dios me dijo” he still seems to work up his psychological problems, his more recent songs are love songs.

CitiHope International is honored to present this five-year strategy for the people of DominicanRepublic. You are invited

to help to “Heal a Nation”. Together it is possible to make a World of Difference for Good.5-Year Strategy for a National Health Initiative1. Situational AnalysisThe Dominican Republic currently faces a significant gap between the government’s far-reaching social programs and its limited ability to provide medicines and nutritional support to promote health. The Dominican Minister of Health places this disparity at 60 percent, and suggests two factors that could further widen this gap into the future:a. No new allocation of fundsb. Loss of subsidyObjectives“Sanar una Nación”, priorities are based on various criteria, including the critical nature of the activity and available access to funds, pharmaceuticals and commodities. The strategic objectives of Heal a Nation are built around four pillars:a. Provide treatmentb. Provide treatmentc. Develop a health network supply chaind. Cultivate sustainability

StrategiesIn order to achieve the first objective, Provide treatment, CitiHope will deliver to designated institutions humanitarian assis-tance consisting of medicines, medical sup-plies and nutritional products, further re-ferred to as “Donations”.In order to achieve the second objective, Promote health & prevent disease, CitiHope with “Sanar una Nación” partners will engage the Dominican Ministry of Health, Dominican businesses and health institu-

tions, USAID etc. and collaborate with hos-pitals and specialized treatment centers. In order to achieve the third objective, Develop a health network supply chain, CitiHope and “Sanar una Nación” partners will create a nationwide campaign, work with i-country supporters and build a physical distriution network. In order to achieve the fourth objective, Cultivate sustainability, CitiHope and “Sanar una Nación”partners will start up donations programs.
