Drinking Water It sounds kind of absurd that a hurricane that never touched Dominican territory, is causing a drinking water crisis for its heavy rains. The continuous rains that accompa- nied “Irene” caused several major landslides that interrupted important supply lines. A day after the passage of “Irene”, the National Institute for Drinking Water and Sewerage (Inapa) reported that 70 percent of the supply system had been partially or seriously damaged. Thousands of houses all over the country were cut off from the water supply. Empty Schools Shortly after the new school year began on Wednesday, 17 of August, all the students were sent back home on the following Monday because of the approaching hurricane “Irene”. Until the weekend of the same week, obviously the pupils din't feel much like going back to school again. Particularly in the capital, Santo Domingo, the students seemed to have a lot of time to get back into the classrooms. As reported, the primary school República del Perú in María Auxiliadora had an average visit of ten to eleven children of 375. On the worst day there came only five. Parents were encouraged to send their children back to their schools. The missed lessons of these days will have to be rescheduled. As it sems, the decision about the next President of the Republic will be fought out only between Hipólito Mejía (opposition party PRD) and Danilo Medina (ruling party PLD) like everyboy espected. All the other candidates are far away from having a realistc chance. The third can expect only 3.5 percent (Amable Aristy Castro - PRSC).According to a poll made by Gallup and the daily newspaper „Hoy“, Hipólito currently is still clearly ahead with 47.9 percent, Danilo with 33.4 percent. Even within his own party 90 percent are backing the former President Hipólito Mejía, who had already beaten this opponent in 2000. Danilo Medina, in contrast, is backed by only 73 per cent of the PLD. Among voters with low incomes Hipólito comes to 50.4 percent against 33.5 for Danilo. Nevertheless, the ruling party PLD remains calm. Francisco Javier García, the head of the election campaign, diagnosed a „syndrome of early happiness“ to the PRD in the hope of an electoral victory.

Sources: Listín Diario, Hoy, Diario Libre, DR1

Garcia predicted that Danilo Medina will make Hipólito „eat dust“ in the elections. On 28 of August, Danilo Medina was sworn in as the official PLD candidate in the pre-sence of 91 per cent of the PLD delegates. In his inaugural speech he promised to continue the economic course of President Fernández, but to spread the wealth more equitably. „The economy needs to benefit everyone, without exception.“Danilo Medina wants to create 400,000 decent jobs after taking office on 16 of August 2012. „It is time to distribute the growth that it reaches all people, all the cities and rural areas.“

In the country he would build cooperatives so that the supply is ensured and poverty will be reduced. „I will fight crime with all my strength. We will fight for higher penalties for contract killings, we will beat crime on its feet and hands and rip out its heart and guts“, Danilo promised solemnly.Danilo's big plans for tourism: „Tourism will be the locomotive of the economy. I will work to ensure that ten million tourists visit the country. That is possible. I know that.“ A proposal of PRD candidate Hipolito Mejia caused outraged protests of the Banco Agrícola. Hipólito called the rice farmers in the province of Sánchez Ramírez, not to pay their debts to this bank. The presidential candidate of the PRD promised to them and also to the cocoa and pineapple farmers, that he will cancel their debts, if he becomes president. Officials of the Banco Agrícola said that Hipólito's offer to the farmers was harmful, dangerous and unfortunate.

The initiative of President Leonel Fernández to a worldwide crusade against the specualtion with food and the future trading of crude oil received a widespread support of the 34 Member States of the Forum for Latin American-Asian Cooperation (Focal). In Buenos Aires represantatives of the member countries approved the proposal of Fernández, to stop the rising costs of raw materials, food and the future trading of crude oil, that affect almost all countries. Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, who attended the meeting, recalled that leaders of all continents backed the demand that the United Nations should establish mechanisms that allow to avoid an unpre-cedented humanitarian catastrophe. The 17 nations of the Sica (Central American Inte-gration System) and Caricom (Caribbean Community) supported the initiative, too.

Food producers who want to sell their goods in Santo Domingo on the Mercado Nuevo (New Market, photo top) on Ave-nida Duarte, complain that there is a dealer mafia that bought their goods to a non-agreed price, and they also would be forced to pay ten percent commission to them.Agustín Félix Báez, president of the asso-ciation of agricultural producers in San Juan de la Maguana, reports that the farmers must sell their goods to “wholesalers” who have their own stands and don't admit other stands. There is no authority that would take action against this abuse. Báez said he hoped that in the new Merca Santo Domin-go, scheduled to open by year end, these middlemen-mafia would not be granted exclusivity, because the market is built by tax money and producers, wholesalers and customers should benefit equally of it.

Although the oil price is a far from its peak, the gasoline prices rise in regular rhythm. Now a judge decided that the Ministry of Commerce must show “immediately”, how these prices are calculated, after it always rejected such claims. The ministry was sued by the movement “Lower the price of gasoline” (Bájame la gasolina), supported by the United transporters (CNTU), Juventud Patria para todos, ADOCO (Dominican Alliance Against Corruption) and the move-ment “Toy Jarto” (I'm sick of it).

U.S. Ambassador Raul H. Yzaguirre and Luis Alvarez, Director of International Af-fairs, handed over 59 Taíno art pieces that were confiscated in the U.S. to Dominican Minister of Culture, José Rafael Lantigua. The historically valuable pieces were discovered in 2008, when they should be imported illegally.

In a park in Santiago a Spanish jogger was killed with several shots from a moving car in broad daylight as it was a movie. A few days later there were shot for foreigners in a posh district of Santiago at one in the afternoon. When the police arrived, they found three Colombians and one Vene-zuelan, with hands bound together, lying in the apartment. Obviously, they were slaughtered cold bloodedly. Shortly after, police said, that the death of the Spaniard has to be seen in context with the murder of the four others. Alone in Santiago, this year 24 people were executed by “sicarios” (contract killers) already. End of August a corporal of the Navy was beheaded with a machete on the beach of Miches by masked men. After killing him, they stole his gun.The “Mexicanization” of the Dominican Republic appears to be in full progress - seemingly unstoppable. Murder of a journalist, shootouts on public streets in broad daylight. Without the slightest regard for bystanding children or women. Drug discoveries in bizarre high quantities in a daily rhythm. What shocks the population in Mexico since several years, seems to be-come a part of everyday life here now.

The same weekend of the killings in Santiago, some of these barbarians, ob-viously lacking of any human emotions, showed what they are able to do in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey, the third largest city of the country with four million inhabitants: in a busy street two cars drove in front of a casino, ten men went to the two-story building, poured in some gas cans and set fire to the “Casino Royale”. The whole thing lasted just two and a half minutes. Result: 52 dead. The reaction of Mexican President Felipe Calderón was unusually sharp in direction of the United States. He urged the U.S. to think about what they can do against their seemingly insatiable greed for drugs, which is a tragedy for Mexico and other Latin American countries. The lawyer Vinicio Castillo Semán (photo above right), son of the chairman of the ethics commission, “Vincho” Castillo, and chairman of the conservative party FNP, has accused the Dominican judges that they give a treatment “light” to the criminals of the country. This would exacerbate the crime problem in the country.“Throughout the whole country there is not even a single judge that is feared by the drug dealers, such as for example the late Juan María Severino, who exceled in his harsh verdicts in the Seventh Criminal Division, but he died poor and forgotten and was buried in a simple pine coffin,” said Castillo Semán. The soft treatment of criminals under the new Criminal Procedure Regulation pro-motes crime, argues Castillo Semán. Police is critizized additionally if they take a hard line against repeat offenders.

Five people of a gang that allegedly forged birth certificates to help people obtain “cédulas” for personal identification have been arrested. “We have dismantled this dangerous gang which, supported by JCE employees, enabled dozens of people, including criminals, to procure double identities”, said District Attorney for the National District, Alejandro Moscoso Segarra. He said he believed the forgeries had contributed to protect drug trafficking operations and organized crime.

Although the first hurricane of the season fortunately did not take the predicted course - just in time it drifted off towards the north and did not hit Puerto Plata directly as it was announced - the accompanying rains caused a lot of damage everywhere in the Dominican Republic. “Irene” left homeless thousands of people after its passage close to the north coast. Like always it was mostly the poorest, who built their houses close to rivers, in spite of good advice and warnings. But warn a hungry man not to eat. Where else do these people find a place to settle?

The Director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), General Juan Manuel Mén-dez García made up a balance: 37,000 people had to be evacuated, 90 villages were cut off from the outside world (photo left). After a week there were still 67 of them. There were reported three deaths. 5,215 houses were flooded, 1,617 houses were slightly and 307 heavily damaged. 144 houses were completely destroyed. A big problem was the supply with clean water in parts of the country. The Río Yaque del Sur, which supplies the provinces of Barahona, Independencia and Bahoruco with water, was too cloudy to treat the water in the plant so that it can be fed into the lines. Thus, there had to be organized water bowsers in other parts of the country to supply the population with the essential wet. The southern part of Santo Domingo had to make do for days with only 50 percent of normal water supply. All in all, the country was well prepared, however, for this natural phenomenon. Stu-dents were sent home, and after “Irene” had

passed, homeless people in shelters were cared for. Even the notorious Edes were able to recover the power supply soon.A large yellow area in the sea close to Santo Domingo arrested attention. It turned out to be a mixture of seaweed and garbage that has been washed into the sea by the rivers. After the whole mess was on the beach, it was cleaned up. Cleanup also on other beaches: such as in Boca Chica (photo above) or Juan Dolio, where the whole beach was covered with yellow seaweed.

Half of the Dominican population has no hope that the situation will improve in the coming months. More than 80 percent of the Dominicans see their country on a bad way. These are the alarming results of the latest survey, conducted by Gallup Domi-nicana in all 31 provinces and the capital for the daily newspaper “Hoy”. The three biggest problems with 63.4 percent are inflation, followed by crime with 42.2 percent and the lack of jobs and unemployment with 40.5 percent. Close behind with 38.2 percent follows anger over the never ending power outages. Since 2009, these points were always first of the list. When asked with which of these points they have to deal personally and directly, 65 per-

cent named inflation, 42 percent the lack of jobs and 39 percent the crime. A directly related problem for 38 percent are the power outages. Twelve percent are worried about the loss

of moral values in the country. And asked about the economic situation, almost half (48 percent) perceive the economic situation as very bad, an additional 35.8 percent said it is bad. Only one in ten (9.7 percent) think it's somehow in order, and six percent find it even good. When it comes to the personal economic situation, it is not that bad. “Only” 20 percent feel their situation as very bad. For 43 percent it is bad, for a quarter it is financially normal. The living expenses worry 69 percent of women, probably because they are the ones who have to go shopping. For men the number is 60 percent. Unemployment concerns both, women and men, equally

with 40 percent. 50 percent of women see the country stagnating, while for men it is something less with 47 percent. For questions regarding public safety, the Dominicans are not very optimistic. Just under a third feels that it gets better, ano-ther nearly one-third sees no change, but a strong third sees a deterioration of public safety. Since seven years, brutal crimes shock society. Often associated with drug traf-ficking. Only a quarter feel that the govern-ment is successful in the fight against drugs. Especially in the north people see a failure of government: 41 percent see no results.

A somewhat strange expression of solidarity with cancer stricken Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, who has lost his hair from chemotherapy, was shown by some of his followers: they shaved their heads bald. Ten members of the Christian organization "Paz Dominicana", including a girl, Leidy Jimenez (photo above), met in Santo Do-mingo and shaved bald, to ensure, through a vow to God, complete healing of Chávez, whom they called a “man of solidarity”. The answer of the Venezuelan president: “If Christ is with us, who can be against us?”Also at the birthplace of Hugo Chávez in Barinas, hundreds of young people shaved their hair to show their solidarity with their president. And a week earlier, another hundred Catholic and Protestant young people expressed their solidarity with a similar action in an “ecumenical prayer and thanksgiving.”

Still unforgiving to their “arch enemy” Cuba after 50 years. In a monotone repetitive ritual the mighty United States add their tiny neighbor in the Caribbean Sea

to the list of state sponsors of terrorism, each year since 1982. The communist island is accused, despite contrary public statements, to continue to support the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) and ELN (National Forces of Liberation) in Colombia and other left-wing groups in the Andes. Cuba also is accused to shelter terrorists of the Basque terrorist group ETA in Spain and to give them asylum in Cuba.In spite of the United States' demands, Cuba has again not adopted a law in 2010 to fight against terrorism and allows “people of different nationalities to use Cuba as a base to enter the United States.”Cuba also would continue to denounce the anti-terror fight of the USA as an excuse to expand American influence. Cuban President Raul Castro (photo above) condemned sharply the decision of the northerly neighbors and denied any support for terrorist groups. “The U.S. has not the smallest moral right to condemn Cuba in any way, that shows a flawless way in the fight against terrorism,” the Cuban foreign minister wrote in a communiqué, which was published by the communist party newspaper “Granma”.

The armed conflict in Colombia lasts for about 50 years now. Left-wing guerrillas, extreme right-wing paramilitaries, the drug mafia and the military are involved, with thousands of civilian casualties. A newly formed unit of prosecutors are investigating cases of forced disappearances and land grabs. Since 1946 a total of 61,604 people in Colombia have disappeared, 16,655 of them forcibly. Marcela Márquez, the head of the unit, says: “Slowly the Colombian society awakes from the lethargy that they showed against the disappeared.” Many of them were kidnapped and didn't reappear. Others were shot and left lying somewhere or were buried in common graves without identification. Guilhem Ravier from the International Red Cross (IRK): “We know that the real numbers are probably much higher, because many families are afraid to complain or do not know how to do it.”

It's over!An old man was laying on his death bed. With only hours to live, he suddenly noticed the scent of chocolate chip cookies coming from the kitchen. With his last bit of energy, the old man pulled himself out from his bed, across the floor to the stairs, and down the stairs to the kitchen. There, the old man's wife was baking chocolate chip cookies. With his last ounce of energy, the old man reached for a cookie. His wife, however, quickly smacked him across the back of his hand, and exclaimed, “Leave them alone, they're for the funeral!”

The doctor says to a man, “You should have come to see me sooner. Unfortunately you waited too long and you will die this night.” The man is distraught and wonders how he is going to tell his wife. Well, he tells her and she takes it pretty well. “Honey, this is going to be a night that you will always remember,” she says. “I am going to treat you like a king.” She prepares a scrumptious gourmet dinner. After dinner she dresses in the most incredible negligee the man has ever seen. In the bedroom they make the most passionate love of their life. Once done, the wife rolls over to go to sleep knowing she kept her promise. But the husband is wide awake watching the clock, knowing it's his last night. He taps her: “Honey?” She rolls over to make love again. So they went on three times. Finally the wife rolls over and begins to snore. The man still hadn't enough and decides to tap her again. “Honey?” he whispers. She rolls over and yells, ”Oh sure! You don't have to get up in the morning!”

BestiallyEnergizer Bunny is dead. He was six years old. Authorities say, the death occurred approximately 8:42 PM. Known as the irritating pink bunny that kept going, and

going and going, “Pinkie” was alone at the time of his death.

An emergency autopsy was performed early this

morning. Chief Medi-cal Examiner, Dura Cell, concluded that

the cause of death was acute cardiac arrest induced by sexual over-

stimulation. Apparently, someone had put the bunny's batteries in backwards and he kept coming, and coming, and coming ...

A man orders a chicken dish in a restaurant.. He just wanted to eat, when the waiter comes back and says, “Sir, I'm afraid there has been a mistake. You see, that police officer who is sitting at the next table is a regular customer and he usually orders the same dish. Unfortunately this was the last chicken. I'm afraid I'll have to take this to him and you order something else!” The guy gets really upset and refuses to give up his food. The waiter walks over to the other table and explains the situation. The officer comes to the man's table and says, “Listen and listen good. That is MY chicken, and whatever you do to that chicken, I'll do the same to you. Pull out one of its legs, I'll pull out one of yours. Break one of its wings, I'll break one of your arms!” The man calmly sticks his middle finger in the bird's rectum, pulls it out and licks it, then gets up, drops his pants, bends over and says, “Go ahead!”

The daughter of the Dominican Merengue veteran Wilfredo Vargas is a versatile young lady. Alina Vargas has lived for years in Colombia, where she works as an actress or as a model for fashion shows, and of course she's making music. Currently she stays in the Dominican Re-public for a film shooting. Eleven years she has worked in her father's orchestra. “Se acabaron las mujeres buenas" (Good women are running out) is the title of her album. The partner of the title song, a Merengue urbano, is Milka “la más dura” (Milka, the hardest one), in which the cocky lords of creation get read the riot act. Alina Vargas thanked Shakira, who made Merengue urbano internationally known and accepted with her interpretations of El Cata's songs (see adjacent article). ”She has opened the doors with her work. Merengue urbano now is experiencing a nice time.” Alina Vargas was offered a role in the telenovela “Un verano en Venecia” in Colombia, which she refused. Telenovelas are too time consuming for her. She prefers to make movies with fixed dates.

Akon, one of the most popular hip-hop stars with more than 30 million albums sold, will perform a concert in the Dominican Re-public for the first time at the Kartódromo Julián Barceló in Santo Domingo.

There was finally a song of the ill-famed Dominican Música urbana, ennobled by a world star: “Loca con su tíguere” by El Cata, which was discovered and made an inter-national hit by Shakira. And now exactly this song is slagged off. In a survey of the Spanish edition of the Pop magazine “Rolling Stone”, “Loca” was voted one of the ten silliest songs in music history. The lyrics were “muddled, incomprehensible and stupid”, is the argument of the readers. This is a honor that doesn't happen to Shakira for the first time. A few years ago, the maga-zine “Time” tagged her song “Whenever, Wherever” in a similar inglorious way.

The Dominican salsa star Michel “El Buenón” (photo at right), accompanied by his partner Miosotis, was not exactly splitting hairs in the TV show “Más Roberto” of host Roberto Ángel Salcedo. He said, the Dominican Republic is “one of those little banana republics” where there are living narrow-minded people and where people with a dark skin color are more racist than whites. When he played in the orchestra of Johnny Ventura, also dark-skinned, in the eighties, he heard him say about him, “What is the damn negro in the cream-colored jacket doing?” Michel joked, Michael Jackson and the Dominican baseball star Sammy Sosa proved that “we negroes can get white, but a white man cannot get black.”Michel also spoke about the confiscation of more than 2,500 of his promotional CDs on the Las Américas International Airport (AILA) in Santo Domingo. He better left them there, because he would have had to pay two dollars for each. Michel said, they should give them away, so they avoid to pay the guys who should distribute the CDs.

Miriam Aracelis Cruz Ramírez was born in Santo Domingo on August 17, 1968. Her carreer started as the lead singer of Las Chicas del Can in 1982, already famous in those years. Las Chicas del Can have been produced by master of Merengue, Wilfredo Vargas. The group was the first Merengue band with only female members. And it distinguished itself by a high staff turnover - in two years, seven of the group members got pregnant. Miriam Cruz stayed with the Merengue girls until 1992 who have been very successful in Latin America, the USA, Europe and even Japan. After leaving the “Chican”, Miriam Cruz started her solo carreer as Miriam Cruz y las Chicas. She had big success in the Spanish and Dutch TV. After a break, Miriam Cruz returned as the lead actress Eva Perón in the musical “Evita” in 2004.The successful comeback took Miriam Cruz by surprise. Since her song “La loba” (The She-Wolf) in the year 1994 she never could land such a hit any more. “Everywhere, people sing my new song, especially the women,” says Miriam Cruz. Lately even “La loba” was a number one hit in Peru again.

What is this Lady singing?“Cosa de él” by Miriam Cruz

A new Merengue that sounds as if it was there a long time already. A nice, catchy – old-style – Merengue. It seems that people miss this kind of music lately, because Miriam Cruz' “Cosa de él” became a blockbuster immediately after its publication. Of course all the long-serving Merengue fans remember this voice easily: Las Chicas del Can of the eighties.

The number of dengue patients has declined sharply this year. Last year, there were reported more than 12,000 cases of dengue until the same date in late August. This year there there were reported just 1,187 cases until today. In contrast to 27 deaths last year from haemorrhagic dengue, the severe form of the disease, so far there are reported “only” two people that have died of this disease. 43 people have fallen ill on this form of dengue, last year there were more than ten times as many: 483.The Vice Minister of Collective Health of the Ministry of Health, José Rodríguez Aybar, reported, that dengue was under control. Similarly, the number of malaria cases has declined by 35 percent. Most of the malaria patients were of Haitian natio-nality. The case of the still not weathered cholera epidemic is not that rosy. Rodríguez Aybar said that there have been registered up to 15,200 cases of cholera until now. About 12,000 cholera patients had to be taken to a hospital. The death toll from cholera has cracked the mark of a hundred, too. Cholera killed 109 people in the Dominican Republic so far.

At the inauguration of the new hospital “Clínica del Pie Diabético” in Los Ríos, Santo Domingo, the director of the National Institute for Diabetes (Inden), Dr. Ammar Ibrahim, said that eight percent of Dominicans suffer from diabetes, mainly because of their eating habits. The Inden attends 800 patients daily. About 65 of them suffer from diabetic foot, with the threat of amputation. Since the existence of Inden, this kind of amputations could have been reduced by 60 percent.

Symptoms of DiabetesSymptoms of diabetes are usually first seen when you begin drinking more because of a dry mouth or increased thirst, urinating a lot and feeling very fatigued. The symptoms often but not always begin with those three and progress to either weight gain or weight loss. If untreated diabetes can have the common complications diabetic keto-acidosis (which can be fatal), diabetic neuropathy (which can cause loss of use of feet and hands), blindness, kidney failure, heart failure, death.Sometimes it can simply begin with a vague feeling of not feeling well, being very tired and irritable. Every adult should get a fasting blood glucose level checked every year, because many people are without symptoms - but you can be causing damage to your whole body all the while - vascular disease, coronary artery disease, damage to kidneys, to the eyes, etc.Occasionally, people with diabetes type 2 diabetes have no symptoms even though they are seriously unwell. Some-times an illness such as a cold or flu can bring on the warning signs of diabetes. In addition, you do not need to be overweight to develop diabetes type 2 if there is a family history of diabetes. Increased thirst, hunger as well as increased urination are all symptoms of Type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes has less noticeable symptoms and can go undetected for years.

Word History:Diabetes is named for one of its distressing symptoms. The disease was known to the Greeks as diabetes, a word derived from the verb diabainein, made up of the prefix dia-, “across, apart,” and the word bainein, “to walk, stand.” The verb diabeinein meant “to stride, walk, or stand with legs asunder”; hence, its derivative diabetes meant “one that straddles,”" Diabetes is first recorded in English, in the form diabete, in a medical text written around 1425.
