[Tentative] Spanish 230: San Jose, Costa RicaThis program is not yet active or approved to run, but we are tentatively optimistic that we will be able to open a section in San Jose, Costa Rica for Summer 2022.

If this happens, we’ll send out a survey to see which individuals may be interested in this location. Depending on interest, there may be a lottery match system to place students in site locations.

Language Program Application Basics● Deadline

○ January 15 for all UM faculty-led Spanish language programs● Essays

○ Intercultural experience ○ Goals

● Recommendation from Language Instructor ● Grade of “B-” or higher in most recent language course● Homestays● Students pay UM Tuition + Program fee

The Application ProcessApplications are open for Spring/Summer 2022.

● These applications require a language recommendation, so start building those relationships now.

● Please do not apply for both 232 and 230 - you will almost certainly not receive your decision until after the drop/add deadline.○ If you’re not sure which program is the best fit, please connect with me.

The Application Process

● We do not review applications early, so there is no inherent benefit to applying early.

● Spanish 230 abroad is effectively 2 full semesters of Spanish in about 8 weeks. It’s very intensive - faculty are looking for college-level Spanish experience if possible.

● These programs are typically competitive, but we don’t know how competitive until after the application cycle: it depends on application numbers and capacity.
