Locals investigated a downed Cessna that flipped in a farmer’s field northeastof the Langley Regional Airport midday Monday. Troy Landreville/Langley Advance

A pilot walked away from asmall plane crash Mondaynear Langley Airport.by Heather [email protected]

A pilot has survived the crashof a small plane adjacent to theLangley Regional Airport justafter 1 p.m.

The Cessna 172 single-engineof SkyQuest Aviation Ltd. tookoff from the local airport andcrashed into a farmer’s fieldnortheast of the airport. There

was only one person on theplane when it crashed.

“It flipped over but there wasno fire,” said Joost Dewit, atrainee at the local airport.

Airport staff responded to thescene which was also attendedby local emergency crews.

“No comment at this time,”was the only response whenSkyQuest was called.

Airport manager George Millerrushed out to the scene whenthe crash happened at aboutseven minutes after 1 p.m.

He said he does not allowother staff to become involvedin emergencies to ensure first

responders (fire, police andambulance) are unhindered.

He said the plane has sus-tained substantial damage whenit came down in the recentlyplowed field. The rain-soakedfield grabbed the planes tiresand resulted in it flipping.

The man was taken for a med-ical examination. Although heappeared unharmed, unforseenproblems such as shock canoccur, Miller cautioned.

“This was a student on a soloflight,” Miller said.

The pilot was able to extricatehimself from the plane after thecrash.

“The Transportation SafetyBoard has given the clearanceto take the aircraft out of there,”Miller explained.

Because there was no loss oflife and damage is not consid-ered substantial enough, thefederal agency that investigatestransportation incidents will notbe heading an investigation.

Miller said investigation willbe “at our level.”

The airport, the flight school, and the insurance companieswill look into the incident andthe cause. He said it is up to theflight school to decide whetherthat information becomes public.

Three RVs were set on fire earlySunday afternoon, all in the same areawithin Brookswood.by Heather [email protected]

Langley City fire staff got no recreationSunday, thanks to three fires of recreationalvehicles.

At about 4:51 a.m. the fire departmentreceived a call of an RV fire that was later

upgraded to a structure fire, said chief RoryThompson.

Three fire vehicles and 19 firefightersresponded to an address in the 4600 block of207th Street.

“When they go there, they found a fullyinvolved trailer,” he said.

A pickup beside the 28-foot RV was alsodamaged. Thompson said the heat fromthe fire damaged the house’s siding but thestructure did not catch.

“It was starting to spread to the structure,”he said.

He estimates that the result was about

$50,000 in property damage. At the same time as they were dousing

that fire, there was a call about another trail-er fire in the 20700 block of 46th Avenue, which was right next door.

Langley City fire contacted the Townshipfor assistance which supplied two trucks andeight firefighters.

In the second fire a plastic cover wasalight and a fire extinguisher was able to putit out, but not before about $100 in damagewas done. The RCMP was called in for thetwo fires.

Heavy rains have closeddown some camping optionsin North Langley.

At Derby Reach RegionalPark, both the camping sitesalong the river and the dogoff leash area are temporar-ily closed until the Fraser River recedes.

The Fraser is unusually high this weekbecause of a very late melt of the snow-pack, combined with heavy rain in theB.C. Interior.

The Fraser usually hits its high point inlate May or early June, with the currentfreshet about a month behind schedule.

Although the river hit 5.8 metres at

the Mission river gauge Wednesday andThursday, the peak was well below floodlevels.

Langley emergency preparednessofficials warned people to be cautiousaround the shore of the river, due to thefast current.

A Langley babywas deliveredjust minutes aftercontractions began.

by Matthew [email protected]

A Langley Citycouple is extending abig “thank you” to BCAmbulance paramedicsand the firefighters whohelped them throughone of the fastest birthsseen here in some time.

Rhonda told theLangley Advance thatwhen Oliver RayMcInnes decided it wastime to be born, hewasn’t kidding around.

“I had like a littletwinge of a contraction, and all of a sudden they were 45 secondsapart,” she said.

That happened last Saturday evening, when she was at home with her husbandMichael, her mother, and her three-year-old son Grady.

The sudden pain and the speed of thecontractions made it clear that Michaelcouldn’t get her to the hospital on hisown.

They called 911, and firefighters fromLangley City’s hall arrived quickly, fol-lowed by the ambulance. Rhonda actuallyrecognized one of the paramedics. He

had worked with herfather, a firefighter, inParksville on VancouverIsland years earlier.

The emergencyresponders asked if shethought she could makeit to Langley MemorialHospital – just a fewmiles away from thefamily’s home near 48thand 200th Street – andshe wanted to try.

With Michael andone of the firefightersin the ambulance withher, she realized shewouldn’t make it.

The ambulance had tostop on Fraser Highwaynear the LangleyRegional Airport, whereOliver was born.

After that, the newlyenlarged family got tothe hospital for some

post-natal care.Rhonda said the firefighters and para-

medics certainly were not expecting whathappened.

“I think they were all kind of sur-prised,” she said.

Oliver, who weighed seven pounds, two ounces at birth, is back home anddoing well.

Now the McInnes are hoping to getin touch with the firefighters and theparamedics, to thank them personallyfor making a very difficult delivery mucheasier.

Costs for water, sewer, and gar-bage could rise 44 per cent over thenext five years, according to a newreport from Metro Vancouver.

Langley is on the eastern edge ofMetro Vancouver, and the regionaldistrict oversees the water supply, sewage treatment, regional parks, garbage collection, and recycling.

According to Metro Van, theannual cost per $600,000 householdin the region is expected to rise from$513 today to $740 by 2016.

The $800-millionSeymour-Capilanowater filtration plant, planned upgrades tothe Iona and LionsGate sewage treat-ment plants, and gar-bage recycling costs all add to theincrease.

Langley City Mayor PeterFassbender said the region is goingto face increased costs in the com-ing years for the core services Metro

Van provides, but that is breedingtaxpayer frustration.

“People are saying, ‘When is thisgoing to stop?’” he acknowledged.

He noted that the cost to taxpayerswould be significantly higher if eachMetro Van municipality tried to pro-vide water, sewer, wastemanagement, and parksservices.

As well, municipalitiesacross Canada are dealingwith the need to updateand replace aging infra-structure.

“Infrastructure onlylasts so long,” Fassbenderadded.

Municipalities get eightcents of every tax dollar, while 42 cents goes toprovincial governments and 50 cents

goes to the federalgovernment. MetroVan finance commit-tee chair MalcolmBrodie, Richmond’smayor, is calling forprovincial and fed-

eral governments to provide morefunding for municipal projects likethe water plant replacement.

Over the next 10 years, MetroVan plans to spend $2.3 billion onwater infrastructure alone, includ-

ing the Seymour-Capilano plant, anultraviolet water treatment plant inCoquitlam and new pipes under theFraser River to increase water cap-acity to residents south of the river. It’s also calling for $2.2 billion to bespent on sewer services, such as the

upgrades of the Iona andLions Gate sewage treat-ment plants, which willcost $1.4 billion combined.

Those costs will trickledown to the taxpayer, withwater costs set to jump byan average 9.9 per centover the next five years, from 56 cents per 1,000litres today to 84 cents in2016. Sewer services willrise an average 5.5 percent, going from $170 to

$220 for an average home.Brodie noted senior governments

contributed only $150 million to theSeymour-Capilano water plant.

Garbage tipping fees are expectedto see one of the biggest jumps, ris-ing from $91 per metric tonne to$205 in 2016 – or even higher ifMetro is unable to resolve a disputewith the garbage contractors whonow haul trash to the Vancouverand Cache Creek dumps or theBurnaby-based incinerator.

Metro Vancouver plans to builda $450-million trash incinerator in2015-16.

It is expected that the costincreases will vary across the region, depending on residents use of servi-ces. Communities with higher recyc-ling rates will not have the samegarbage cost increase as those thatsend more material to the landfill, while communities like Langley City, which have water meters, will saveon water costs.

Metro Van tries to avoid debt, and has a pay-as-you-go policy forregional functions, such as parksand air quality. For those services,Metro is proposing a property taxincrease of 2.5 per cent in 2012.

Our View

Tolling troublesCheck your toll bills carefully. The news from the top of the world just

keeps getting better and better. Now it’s been divulged that there’s a

basic problem with the equipment used toautomatically scan vehicles as they cross theGolden Ears Bridge.

About one per cent of travellers cross-ing the bridge are being misclasssified, andconsequently, incorrectly billed for their pas-sage.

While there is some quality control toensure not all of the 8,500 incorrectly classi-fied vehicles end up over-charged, the goodfolks over at TransLink feel they have whit-tled the problem down to 200 per month, based largely on complaints.

Of course, now that more people realizethat the pernicious problem exists, morepeople are likely to scrutinize their billsmore carefully.

When TransLink’s numbers indicated thatthere weren’t as many vehicles crossing theGolden Ears Bridge as expected – or needed– the folks over at the Lower Mainland’stransit authority took decisive action byinstituting a modest reduction in tolls… inoff-hours, especially when practically nobodyhas need of the bridge anyway.

And when that (naturally) didn’t work, the wizards at TransLink put their best busi-ness sense to work… and raised toll chargesinstead.

We suspect that that hasn’t increased thenumber of vehicles burning up the pavementover the bridge, either.

Add that to the trouble they’re havingcharging the right tolls against those braveenough to venture across the span, andwe’re thinking that ridership over the GoldenEars Bridge isn’t going to reach peak levelsreal soon.

But the good news is that they’re hopingto have the problems fixed before they startgouging all of us South-of-the-Fraser folks atthe new Port Mann Bridge when it opens ina year and a half.

Every time I look back at the Langley Advanceof 80 years ago, it gets me excited about theinternet and about the future.

That may seem counter-intuitive, especiallyif you believe all the doom-and-gloom storiesabout the impending death of print media, andparticularly the stories that claim it’s the inter-net that’s going to kill us.

Au contraire, mes amis. We’re not dead yet. We’re not even under the

globally changing weather. Not the community news-

papers. And as you leaf back through

past Langley Advance editions, thereason comes clear.

Look back… as the Friendly Giant used tosay, look waaaay back… through the 90s andthe 80s, past the 70s and the 60s, beyond the50s, even further than the 40s, and deep intothe 30s.

Long before you get to July 23, 1931 – thedate of the very first edition of the LangleyAdvance – you’ll see an important patternemerge.

You’ll see a pattern of community newscoverage mirroring the community being cov-ered.

More importantly, you’ll see a pattern ofgrass roots community news coverage.

In the 1930s, the Advance offered bits of newsfrom beyond Langley. It was almost the onlyplace the farmers and homesteaders could findnational and international news – except forthe regional Columbian newspaper, a few dog-eared magazines that got passed around untilthey were tattered beyond recognition, and theoccasional radio set shared by neighbours.

But the focus was on that rarest of commod-ities – local, community news.

Like hundreds of small-town community

newspapers across the country – like thou-sands throughout the continent, and indeed, all over the world – the Advance was the onlyreliable source of information about what washappening in its own community.

In the decades that followed, some thingschanged.

Regional and national newspapers andmagazines became easier to acquire in hinter-lands like Langley.

Radios grew as common as furniture, andtransistors turned them into constant compan-ions.

Television brought quick – and eventuallynearly instant – pictorial news coverage fromall around the world, right into the livingrooms of Advance readers…

And of course, that’s one thing that neverchanged throughout the 80years of the Advance’s existence– not even to this day: you canfind news from everywhere elsejust about anywhere else, but ifyou’re looking for informationabout your community, the first,

best, and most reliable place to look for it is inyour community newspaper, whether you pickup the print copy delivered to your doorstep,or you type in the URL to find it online.

That’s why the internet isn’t going to kill us(just like radio and television, each in theirturn, failed to deliver their predicted deathblows to the lowly newspaper industry).

And here’s the best part. Remember near thebeginning where I mentioned that the Advanceused to be portal for news from beyond theimmediate community, because it was the onlyplace people could get it?

We provide that portal once again, withoutcompromising our focus on local news. Manyof our readers are going online to www.langley-advance.com, and use it to access the vast newsresources of Postmedia Network Inc.

We’ve been shifting into a whole new para-digm over the past few years.

It’s not the first time over the past 80 yearsthat the Advance has made such a shift.

And I doubt it will be the last.Visit Bob Groeneveld’s blog, Editor’s Notes, at http://tiny.cc/v7b94

Dear Editor,I disagree with your

editorial [Mayor Greenright to stay put, July 14Opinion, Langley Advance].Sukhi and I are not tryingto judge Green’s innocenceor guilt. We told him that tohis face Monday night.

There are plenty of MLAswho faced special prosecu-tors and investigations. They stepped aside to awaitnews on the results.

We asked Mayor Green to“step aside” while the inves-tigation continues.

I think your editorial mis-

leads the public on severalpoints, due to its arguments.

Earlier this year, duringsome criminal justice reformmeetings (a task force) thatI serve on with the mayors, law enforcement, etc. wemet with the chief judge ofB.C., regional Crown, vari-ous prosecutors, and policepersonnel from several juris-dictions. As mayor, Greenmeets with various levels ofgovernment, police, Crownand more. Are you tellingme that you do not see theconflict of interest here?

Law enforcement, the

Crown and others haveduties to uphold. Theygo through rigorous per-sonal and professional back-ground investigations andsecurity clearances.

These personnel are nowput in the very awkwardposition of sharing sensitiveinformation with someonewho may or may not becharged at a future date. You don’t see the logic ofhim stepping aside just untila decision to charge or notcharge is made?

We all agree that “inno-cent until proven guilty” isthe operating code here. So,do we let teachers underinvestigation continue toenter the school? Do we letcops accused of bad assaultback on the streets duringtheir investigations? Wouldwe let a firefighter underarson investigation in thehall to work?

Innocent until provenguilty means that a personleaves office if it has impacton them. They await word, and then move on.

News story lacks respectDear Editor,

We are appalled at the lack of respect shown for publicoffice by publishing the material supplied by the extremelyimmature people who are working against the dignity of theoffice of mayor [Mayor Green asked to step aside, July 14,Langley Advance].

In most cases, councils and staff are able to work outtheir problems and those of the citizens who gave themtheir positions without holding anyone to ransom andinsulting the decisions of the voters.

There seems to be an inordinate amount of time, effort, and thought directed toward the expulsion of the electedmayor to the detriment of our democratic process.

Bays and Bob Blackhall, Langley

Dear Editor,Just like a person who has to look at a

car crash, I found myself having to see thelevel of response for the rally calling MayorGreen’s resignation on July 15, next to theTownship municipal building.

Not that I was surprised, but a quickcount revealed eight people attended, including the two main organizers. I won’tname them, as they don’t deserve to seetheir names in print.

I found it almost humorous to hear oneof the organizers saying that the reasonfor the low turnout was because peoplewere intimidated to be seen on camera.Since when have the people of the GreaterVancouver area been intimidated to protestagainst anything they are passionate about?

The message is loud and clear. The fewpolitically motivated people who are hell-bent on discrediting the mayor shouldaccept that there is no support for theircause. There is no movement to have themayor resign, and the complete lack ofinterest in the alleged rally convinces methat Mayor Green has the public’s confi-dence.

Continuing to drag the mayor’s namethrough the mud is now going beyond polit-ical activism.

We are only four months from themunicipal election. I am sure the peopleof Langley will show how they feel aboutMayor Green and the rest of council onNov. 19.

Dear Editor,I am compelled to write

and let you know that yourarticle [Yorkson hous-ing protest brings RCMP,June 28, Langley Advance] isinaccurate.

The RCMP were called todeal with what was thought

initiated the non-taking ofphotos, not the people atthe rally.

After the officer left thescene, there were wordsbetween the people attend-ing the information rally– not a “protest” – and theindividual to whom the offi-cer had spoken. The RCMPwere called again but didnot attend.

Langley’s new Chamberof Community Service ishosting its second get-to-know-you event Thursdayat Williams Park.

by Roxanne [email protected]

Speed-dating has taken ona new meaning in Langley,as many charities can attest.

For the second time inthe past three months, thenew Langley Chamber ofCommunity Service is host-ing a get-to-know-you eventdesigned specifically for thevoluntary and non-profit sector.

But a twist to this week’s event, noted organizer Dave Stark: it’sbeing held in a park.

“Enjoy an afternoon, rainor shine, connecting withpeople who can make adifference to your organ-ization,” said Stark, whobesides founding LCCS isalso the executive direc-tor of Langley Meals onWheels.

“It is different, casual, and perfect for a summerevent. Some people wanted to waituntil November. That’s too long towait with such a innovative, fun,and proven networking event,”noted Stark, who lives a stone’sthrow from the park and was anx-

ious to host the event in such a tran-quil setting.

Mirroring a social speed-datingevent, this event brings togetherrepresentatives from local charities

and government agencies thatmove around in five-minuteincrements, seeking know-ledge and at the same timesharing information abouttheir own organizations.

The first “speed-dat-ing” event was held at thebeginning of April at theRenaissance, with 40 people

(representing 34 groups) in attend-ance. Stark said he’s expecting evenmore to attend this week. He notedthere will only be a few repeat par-ticipants, noting he’s asked for dif-ferent representatives to come, tokeep the event fresh.

Stark estimates that there are400 to 500 non-profit and com-munity groups in Langley (notincluding sports-based groups)all working independently whenthey could be networking andsharing.

They will come together toshare trials and tribulations, suc-cesses and victories through thisnew method, Stark said, adding,“This event is an example of howsimple relationship can help ourcommunity.”

The afternoon of networking,he added, is one of many LCCSevents being organized over thenext year. Depending on feedbackfrom this week’s outdoor event,he might suggest it become anannual LCCS gathering.

This week’s “speed-dating” isbeing held at Williams Park, 6726238th St. starting at 2 p.m. onThursday.

The two-hour session is followedby a one-hour of socializing (net-working and refreshments) from 4to 5 p.m. with participants movingaround from one picnic table toanother in the park shelter.

The event is limited to one personper voluntary group, and sign upin advance is necessary. Cut-off forregistration is Wednesday. Sign upby emailing [email protected] calling Stark directly at 604-807-0306.

SportsIt was pure chaos for opposing teams that faced

Langley’s bantam C fastball squad at the provincial cham-pionships in Chilliwack last weekend.

The Langley Chaos brought home B.C. gold after dom-inating the tournament, going undefeated through theround robin and championship play.

However, the Chaos had to battle hard to win itsopener, after a shaky come-from-behind 10-9 victory overSooke in its first game.

From there, the local team got stronger as the tourna-ment progressed, posting an 8-0 win over North Delta inits second game and subsequent 11-1 and 11-0 victoriesover North Shoreand Port Moodyto end the roundrobin at 4-0.

Entering thechampionshipround, the Chaosbeat Chilliwack12-3 via mercy rulein the fifth inningbefore blastingWest Kootenay14-1 to enter thesemifinals with aperfect 6-0 record.

On the Sunday morning the Chaos beat a strongParksville Rage team 9-1, leading the local girls to aplayoff rematch with their district rivals, the AbbotsfordBandits, in the gold medal game.

After going down 2-0 in the first inning, the Chaosfought back with a three-run home run by StephanieDigness in the third inning.

Powered by great batting along with solid pitching fromTaylor Glass, the Chaos built a commanding 13-5 lead bythe fourth inning.

Abbotsford mounted a comeback in the fifth, scoringthree runs to avert a mercy-rule situation, but the Chaostacked on four more runs in the sixth, and with close-out pitching from Rachelle Folk, held on to “mercy”Abbotsford 17-7 in the sixth inning to secure the provin-cial championship win.

“Every member of the team played at [her] very bestin this tournament,” Chaos coach Mike Glass said. “Wethought going in we would be competitive but neverbelieved we would perform so well and win so convin-cingly. We are all incredibly proud of of what this teamhas achieved this year”

The B.C. title caps an amazing season for Chaos, as theplayers compiled six tournament victories, two second-place finishes, and an overall record of 46 wins and fourlosses in league and tournament play.
