PreparationThe area to be paved needs to cleared of all topsoil and vegetation to a depth of at least 65mm. Make sure the paving is at least 150mm below the DPC (Damp Proof Course) of any adjoining building, otherwise you may create a damp problem where there wasn't one. Use taut strings as your guides for alignment and level. These can be fastened to pegs knocked into the ground or nails fixed into masonry. Use the string lines at the edges of the pavement and then use your longtimber straight edge to span from the flags to the string lines to check for level.

DrainageFlagstones or paviours need to be laid with a slight fall to make sure water drains away properly. A fall of 1:60 (equivalent to 17mm per linear metre) should be sufficient without the surface looking noticeably sloped.
