“While trying to stave off the burning in my right thumb waiting for the season to start, I began thinking about riding and why it is so awesome. Allow me to indulge with you, while we pass these last few hours of the non riding season. Before you know it, it will be time! In 1974 my friend’s dad had an El Tigre. Even the name sounded cool. The seed was planted and my obsession would soon grow. Two years later a friend had a pair of Ski Doo’s that his parents let us take field riding. I went home and begged my dad for one, but he wanted nothing to do with it. In 1982, when I was a junior in high school, a couple of friends and I bought $500 sleds. They were junk. We worked tirelessly all week on them, so on Friday and Saturday night we could ride them. They didn’t steer well, they had no brakes, no hand warmers and they would always break down. Monday we would start all over again. They were awesome! In 1991 I got my first real job. The first thing I bought? You got it: a brand new sled. My wife doesn’t like to think about the money we have spent on sleds since then. It makes her sick. I say it has been worth every cent! I became convinced that snowmobiling was for me when I realized that unlike golf, even if you aren’t any good at it, it was still fun! Winters in this part of the country can be really long, and if you can’t look forward to them, why would you even bother living here? We have had some great vacations, but I won’t go anywhere in the winter unless they have snow! My wife thinks I am mental when we are at the beach enjoying a cold one and I look at her and ask “you know what I am thinking?” She knows I’m riding in my mind! I bought a new sled in mid January of ‘07 when there was no snow anywhere for hundreds of miles and none in the long range forecast. My friends thought I was stupid, but I know that it was the best time to buy! Some guys get really angry at years that have late starts or low snow, but there are some things I know: I am not in it for this year, I am in it for every year. Some are good, some are not. You just have to be ready to jump on it when the opportunity presents itself. I am by no means a “morning person”, I need to be dragged kicking and screaming from my warm bed every morning, unless I am riding that day. Then, I don’t even need an alarm clock. My wife has noticed this and I don’t think it amuses her….. I am very much looking forward to the days when my best riding partners will be my 2 sons. The fresh air, scenery, camaraderie, and togetherness will be the blocks we will build upon for a lifetime. I regret that some of my closest friends, the ones I started this with, and the ones I have really fond memories with, are no longer able to ride. I miss them. Some have had kids, lost jobs, gone through divorces or other hardships. And while lam hopeful they will someday return, I am really grateful that I have been able to stay. I have lost a friend on the trail. It is a feeling that I am at a complete loss to put into words. I wish I could, so that no one else would have to experience those feelings. The event has helped me keep a lot of things in perspective in my life. A couple seasons ago I turned a cold-hating friend onto the sport. All it took was to convince him that he would not be cold. He has bought 3 more sleds since then and has his whole family riding now.
The following was a post on the Trailconditions.com website — NY state snowmobile forum chat room some time back. The writer is from Oswego, NY and is a firefighter/AEMT. The article was then re-printed a few months later in the Lake Effect Trailbreakers newsletter. It is worth reading as most of us can definitely relate to it. And….for those of us with friends who absolutely hate winter…. Well, just maybe it will help them to understand.

We have dragged a bulldozer over 100 miles to cut a new trail. Spent a whole weekend there and made new friends. I can cover that trail in less than 5 minutes when I am on my sled. But it’s a pretty cool feel-ing knowing that it’s your trail! I get to see things of beauty that people who stay indoors all winter will never see or imagine. Man, they have no idea what they have missed out on! A crisp moonlit trailside break will always make me want a smoke. Even though I quit over 10 years ago! Being awakened by 3 feet of fresh lake effect snow sliding off the camp’s metal roof in the dead of night is a beautiful way of letting you know that tomorrow is gonna’ be a great day! Is there any other scenario that makes 6am, 10 below and sunny sound like a good idea? There is no better way to spend New Year’s Eve than in a snowmobile joint with friends and other sled heads! There are a lot of places I want to see on my sled. I may not live long enough to see all of them. To be honest, if I can’t ride there on my sled I really don’t care if I go….. Sometimes on a really rough trail day, I find myself laughing out loud inside my helmet, because I can’t believe that these things can put up with the abuse I give them and stay in one piece. This is probably the reason I don’t want the helmet communicators. My buddies would think I’m nuts. I look forward to all seasons, but if it came down to just one, it would be an easy choice. There is no comparison.

The Rock Maple Snow cross Racing event was held on March 28th and 29th at Peek n’ Peak in Clymer, NY. The event featured several local competitors and brought competitors from several states as well as from Canada. Dealers were on hand to give demo rides on the newest sleds.
The total num-ber of paid
club members in the 2008-09 season was 586.
It’s never too early to start thinking about the
Ellery Sno-Cruisers Show and Auction which is held each
October. It’s a excellent place to find
great deals on a new or used sled or just about
anything related to snowmobiling. It’s also
a great place to sell your used stuff. Watch
our website and the next newsletter for all
the info.

Thanks goes out to Jamie Carlson and Steve Latone for all the time and effort they put in to the process of applying for a NY State grant for the purchase of a new Prinoth tractor. Once approved, the grant will pay a large portion of the purchase price for this new piece of equipment. The club will then depend on fundraisers to make up the difference. This acquisi-tion will help cut down on the time and expense put in for repairs and maintenance required on our cur-rent two aging Bombardier 180’s.

The total hours spent by the club volunteers on trail work during the 2008-2009 season are still be-ing counted but it is estimated that the total man hours put in on trail work will be well over 1000 hours. This figure does not include the hours put in on grooming, maintaining and repairing groom-ing equipment which could not even be estimated as of this writing. If you have time sheets that have not been turned in, please get them to Sandy Carlson. You can your hours Sandy at PO Box 89, Bemus Point, NY 14712
