Landing on the Moon (1969)Dylan Nuzzo and Brandon BridgePeriod 1/2

What was Apollo 11?First attempt to actually land on the moonAttempt to beat the Russians, and become the first nation to successfully walk on the moonGet all the astronauts home safelyApollo 11 was the shuttle that was launchedMission launched from Kennedy Space Center

The space program was set up by JFK in 1962. This was after the Russians launched Sputnik in 1957. The mission was to land on the moon and return the astronauts home safely before the end of the decade.2Previous Apollo MissionsApollo 7- First manned Apollo flight, which was in Saturn IBApollo 8- First manned flight around the moon in the Saturn VApollo 9- First manned flight in the lunar moduleApollo 10- First manned flight around the moon in the lunar module

February 26, 1966The LaunchJuly 16, 1969Many practice launches had gone successful before official launchLaunched from the Kennedy Space CenterBroadcasted worldwide on television

Saturn VThe launch took place in July of 1969 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. There were practices launches after Apollo 10 was launched and in orbit. Also they tested them after the splashdown of Apollo 10. The practice launches had all been successful.5

The CrewNeil ArmstrongMichael CollinsEdwin Buzz Aldrin Jr.

Neil Armstrong- was born on August 5, 1930, he developed an interest in flying at the age of 2. Immediately after high school he received a scholarship from the U.S Navy. He enrolled at Purdue University and in 1949 was called into active duty by the navy. He was released form the navy in 1952.

Buzz Aldrin- was born on January 20, 1930. He attended the U.S Military Academy at West Point. In 1951 he attended the Air Force and began pilot lessons. After the apollo 11 mission he returned to the airforce in 1971 and then retired one year later.

Michael Collins- was born on October 30, 1930. He was born in Rome, Italy, but then moved to Washington D.C where he graduated from high school in 1952. From 1959 to 1963 he had logged over 4,200 hours of flying time.6Went into lunar orbit 76 hours after launchThe two spacecrafts undocked 100 hours after launchArmstrong and Aldrin landed on moon approximately 103 hours after launchExplored the lunar surface for approximately 21 hours and 36 minutes

Lunar OrbitApollo Lunar Module (Eagle)

Lander portion of the Apollo spacecraftUsed from lunar orbit to the moons surface, back to Earths surfaceDesigned to carry a crew of two members (Armstrong and Aldrin)

Apollo Command Module (Columbia)

Attached to service moduleDesigned to carry a crew of three members, but only carried CollinsStayed in orbit around moon while Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the moon

The fine soil was very slipperyCollected soil specimensThe crew said that they felt very refreshed after sleepThe Gravity was very easy to move throughWind was almost non-existent

Surface Discoveries and Actions

Descent and SplashdownArmstrong and Aldrin lifted off from moon and docked with Columbia on July 21, 5:35 pmRested until 12:55 amEntered trajectory toward EarthSplashed into Pacific Ocean on July 24, 12:15 pm with all films surface specimens

-Might have acquired undiscovered pathogens from the moons surface while exploring-The three American heroes received a clean bill of health and were released to the public on August 13, 1969

First announced his goal for landing a man on the moon on May 25, 1961 to a Joint Session of Congress"No nation which expects to be the leader of other nations can expect to stay behind in this race for space.Asked Congress to approve more than $25 billion for the Apollo Project, which started in 1961Assassinated in 1963Man walked on moon while Richard Nixon was in office

JFKs Space Program

The Russian/U.S. Space RaceTechnological and ideological rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union, which developed during the Cold WarUSSR loses many lunar travel candidates after failed space attempts year after yearSoviets get credited for sending the first unmanned probe to the moon in 1959United States get credited for having the first man to ever walk on the moon in 1969

Sputnik was only the size of a beach ball. It was the first artificial satellite that went into space. After this President Kennedy set up a space program that enhance the teaching of astrology in schools.16The Apollo 11 HoaxMany people think that it was fake, and that the whole event was staged and photoshopped

The black backgrounds of their photographs are oddly lacking the many stars that should be visible in the sky.In photographs such as this one where both astronauts are visible, there is no sign of a camera. So, who took this picture? The Soviet Lunar program became operational with the launch of Luna 1 on 4 January 195917

ImpactShowed superiority over RussiaApproved JFKs promise in having an American man walk on the moon and return home by the end of the centuryBecame most significant space travel achievement of all-timeSecured NASAs existence for the next 40 years Made the United States proud to be Americans after the harsh decade of the 60s
